Creepy Bad Endings: Bomberman 64

  • Bad Endings. I don't know about anyone else, but they terrify me. Just when the hero(es) thought everything was finally right, just when it looked like peace had finally returned to the world, something happens that, at best, creates a bittersweet victory and, at worst, spoils everything and the enemies win, despite everything that happened throughout your adventure. Bad endings don't give you any second chances, you screwed things up for everyone and you must pay dearly...

As someone who used to play the hell out of this game, I had no idea this ending ever existed. I'm just shocked and its only now in seeing this does it hit me the hints were there all along (Altair getting away, the dialogue with Sirius at the end). Thankfully I still have the game AND the exact same Nintendo 64 from my childhood so I am gonna dust them off, plug in the Nintendo and boot up the game when I get enough time from work and School.

  • @LonesomeDevil

I'd say it's exactly because the plot is so thin and simple that the plot-twist wasn't as obvious as it should have been.
Just look at Milky Way Wishes from Kirby Super Star, for example. Pretty much the same thing. (Except that it doesn't have that specific secret ending requirement, so it's not as shocking as to someone who had gotten the bad ending of this game multiple times before getting the best one)

A huge wave of memories flooded me when I saw those endings, especially when Sirius mentions how disappointed he was. I must have been really determined back then in order to get all those gold cards from rentals.
Seeing those environments just brings me such joy. I don't know why, but I just love the atmosphere to that city level and treating it like a Bomberman level. It's hard to explain.

So, yeah, i didn't really see all that coming.
Gotta make a small bad story about my experience with the bad ending and the Rainbow Palace (just keep scrolling down and ignore this if you want).
I mean, Bomberman 64 was one of my favorite games when i was younger. Back then I finished every stage up to the Altair battle. Untouchable Treasure, Have or Have not, Switches and Bridges, The dragon boss, the big fish, Orion, giant "spider"-ish thing, blah blah blah.
So i completed the game for the first time. Altair defeated, yay ending. Though, Altair got away. i was there, thinking he'd return in a future game.
    The credits started.
    But there was something off...
Near the end i noticed 2... things i have never saw both ingame and in the cutscenes.
The first one, is Bomberman standing in front of... some kind of palace? I have played through Green Garden, Blue Resort, Red Mountain, White Glacier and Black Fortress... but i never saw THIS in any of these stages.
The second one, is Sirius flying towards the screen and charging some kind of beam with the screen turning red... never saw that too... but i just thought it was something extra for the credits.
Years and years passed, it wasn't until early 2015 when i decided to challenge myself into finding every single gold card in every single stage (this time from Trap Tower to Untouchable Treasure, i already had all attack gold cards on the Altair battle) and boy was it hard, some gold cards were well hidden in the regular stages, and some attack gold cards in the boss battles were hard to pull off. I finally got the cards hoping i'd unlock a secret character or a new difficulty, however at that time i've completely forgot about the mysterious palace stage and Altair charging up a beam at the screen.
I went to the Battle mode, to see if there was a new character. Nothing. Just Bomberman. Looked at the difficulties. Nothing too. just Normal and Hard.
I shut off the game dissapointed... all this struggle, for nothing?!
Like 5 months later, i decided to play the game again. Just bored.
Decided to do some kind of "boss rush" fighting all the bosses from Green Garden's Sirus battle to Black Fortress' Altair battle.
So i reached Altair. Defeated it, mission complete. About to shut off the game.
However, something stopped me from doing so.
    A new cutscene came in.
While Regulus was trying to get Altair out of there, Sirius came, knocked Regulus off the arena and Altair fell to the ground, dropping the Omni Cube.
Sirius came into the arena, held the Omni Cube in laughter and started "gaining power" from it.
    Altair tried to get up.
    However...
"It's been a while, Altair. Now that i've taken back the Omni Cube you stole from me, here's a present."
Sirius rammed Altair, sending him up into the air.
Then Sirius charged up a beam... the same way i saw him do in the staff credits sequence.
    "Yo!"
Then he fired it at Altair, the latter screaming in agony and fading out.
    He turned to Bomberman.
"Bomberman, you've worked out better than i had expected. Thanks for helping me regain my power!"
Actually at this moment i was thinking this would be the good ending, and they would exit Black Fortress, ending, yay.
However i pressed A, and i found out that wasn't the case.
"With my power back, I have nothing to fear. *It was worth telling you all these corny lies, and helping you out"*
    Wait a second...
"You've out-lived your usefulness, you're starting to annoy me. *Get ready to be destroyed along with Planet Bomber."*
Oh my god... i know there were lots of betrayer characters like Marx or Bass, but i haven't seen this cutscene for like, 10 years after i got the game, and i actually didn't see Sirius being the bad guy coming.
So, Sirius flies away and ascends up to... a stage i swear i have seen during the staff credits sequence. And boy, i was correct.
    I stood there, wordless.
I unlocked that stage, it turns out it was called Rainbow Palace.
    STAGE 1
    START
    Beyond the Clouds...
It was the same stage i saw in the bad ending credits!
Finished the stage, before moving on to Stage 2, i went to Green Gardens Stage 1, "Untouchable Treasure" I actually saw Sirius there, instead of being absent.
I walk up to him, and press B.
*"It's useless for you to oppose me. Lie down quietly and meet your end."*
I saw the Altair icon had him... with green eyes? The text was orange, is this some kind of hologram or something?
Then i started to remember you fought Altair at Stage 2, "Friend or Foe?"
I actually knew the dialogue was going to be different...
    But not like this.
*"Target confirmed. Commencing sampling. Target termination program activated"*
With the green eyed "icon", orange text and robot talk, it was obiously a robot decoy.
    Defeated it as usual.
*"Damage level over 90% ...Unable to execute program. Reporting back on the sampling data."*
So i decided not to waste more time and progress further into the game.
The first boss of Rainbow Palace was... some kind of jester-mage thing.
    STAGE 2
    START
    Vs. Spellmaker
The... thing was kind of difficult to defeat, and it had an extended variety of attacks.
    To be continued....

      dangggg
i can't believe i actually wrote all of this oh my god
but yes, i'll continue. i know this'll be a bit different, it's what change does to someone over the years.
      ahem
      *"Welcome!"*
HA HA HA! Spellmaker please shut up I SWEAR TO GOD
Gosh, this thing. I used to HATE IT SO MUCH when i first faced it. Believe me, he LOVED to jump around. A lot.
So basically, the only way of actually hurting Spellmaker was to actually attack its shadow. Usually that'd be not that big of a deal, yes...
...But Sirius isn't there to provide the remote bomb powerup. The bastard did go all "haha i turn against you now" after all. So i had to pray my timing was good enough to ACTUALLY have the bombs blow up on Spellmaker's shadow. As he kept hopping around and around and around. Tough times.
      *"HA HA HA!"*
So, what does he do? Spellmaker can pull out different kinds of cards with designs i was unable to really tell what they even were at the time. They'd let him use certain abilities such as a shadowy hand trying to catch Bomberman on its grasp, a green-colored slash that _comes out of nowhere_ and is likely to catch Bomberman off guard easily, giant fists slamming down from above Bomberman, falling stars, etc. Sometimes even a giant mask that throws items at you. Sometimes beneficial, and sometimes harmful. You can even get the remote bomb power-up from it, making the fight less of a hassle.
I remember taking, what, eight tries to finally learn his attacks and take him down?
...Hey, don't look at me like that, i kind of sucked at this one, okay? It was... new, after all...
And then i finally depleted its health.
As its shadow kept repeating its "hurt" animation, the Spellmaker let out one last laugh...
And then he just stood there. The mask fell off, revealing... nothing.
      Nothing at all.
Stage clear! Let's see what else is ahead.
Next thing i see, Bomberman is inside the palace.
And the door behind him closes itself shut.
      STAGE 3
      START
      Doom Castle
The whole place was filled with destructible pillars and enemies... i honestly had no idea of what to do at first. I did find a remote bomb powerup. Roamed around for a while...
Oh. These switches. Immediately i knew what to do.
      *Good ol' bomb jumping.*
And as soon as i made my way there and stepped on one of the switches, one of the... light... thingies in... that... altar thingy, uh... lit up.
Gotta light them all up, i guess.
I took a few tries to get the bomb jumping right. But nothing too frustrating.
...Honestly, this stage actually wasn't much to me; Destroy enemies, bomb jump, step on switch. Repeat 4 times until the green arrow appears. Though it did take me a good while.
And i made my way to the exit. Taking as much care as possible. Any stupid mistake could lead me to probably having to do the entire thing all over again. I dunno, i haven't really lost a life in this stage.
...But hey, the exit's right there. I took a step into the arrow.
      Stage clear.
Sirius had me believe his lies for a full decade. And now it's time he pays the price.
Let's go; The end of Rainbow Palace.
Bomberman entered a small room, all that can be heard is an eerie droning noise...
And there he was. That double-crossing jerk. With the Omni Cube he had been desiring so much.
Then... he floated up. The Omni Cube suddenly grew and grew, "consuming" the room around Bomberman and Sirius.
And now the area was... as if like they were in space, on a floating platform made of strange blue... bars? Hey, isn't that the same floor we saw Bomberman standing on in the game's intro scene?
Sirius floats back down. This is no training. No robotic replica. The real deal. Against the hero of Planet Bomber. It was life or death between these two.
      STAGE 4
      START
      Final Battle _!_
Man, i really got so far...
First thing i did was kick a bomb at him. Not only was he not stunned by it, but he just kicked it away like nothing.
Dang. Guess i've gotta try harder than just that.
      Sirius suddenly... flies away? What--
THEN, he quickly sweeps across the area. Shooting a dangerous laser which phases through the floor. Dear god. This actually caught me off guard a lot of times.
      Like, damn.
Anyways. Sirius came back into the arena. Descending back to the ground as i tried to bomb him again... only to miss and have him fly off again. This happened like, three times.
Then i finally got in some damage. The screen turned blue for a second.
*"HA HA HA HA! Give it up!"*
...Hey, of course i wasn't going to give it up. I did get to damage him. And if i kept trying, eventually he'd go down.
Damaged him again. The screen went blue once more, but the voice clip didn't play. I mean yeah, if it did play every time you damaged him, it'd be pretty repetitive... Though after the 6th(?) hit, i did hear him say "Give it up!" again...
After the last hit, i heard him let out a short pained sound. He flew up, and suddenly... oh gosh. He started charging up the same massive laser from earlier.
      *"Yo!"*
...Dang. And all that hope of getting through just... faded away.
...Then i realized, this is a cutscene.
And Regulus swept in. Knocking Sirius away and starting to repeatedly smack the Omni Cube... as it shattered loudly and violently. And they were all back in the same room from before the boss fight.
      Sirius was _pissed._
      *"Youuuuu!"*
Regulus just wanted to get done with him quickly.
"Huh? What a joke! Hey, Bomb!! I'll take care of you later! First, i need to get rid of him!!"
And the fight continued. Sirius was no longer able to fly around, just walk around, place bombs... and actually fire that massive laser of death.
...Yeah, regarding that, he can't move while using it. He stays in place as soon as he charges it up, making it actually not that hard to avoid. As Regulus said, what a joke.
Now, time to beat Sirius up. And holy crap. i did my best. Kicking bombs all around, flinging pumped bombs... It took a while.
      It was explosive.
Pfft, get it? Explo- Okay, no.
I got the final hit in.
And everything started to shake. The area faded into another space-like environment. The screen focused on Sirius, right as he groans in agony while losing his... wing... arm... things... and started to malfunctionate.
      *"NOOOOOOOOOOO!"*
And he was gone with a bang. I let out a chuckle. He had it coming.
The environment fading back in with Bomberman and Regulus.
      Stage clear!
      Sirius is no more.
...And then the palace started to collapse. Regulus hovered in and carried Bomberman away, just like he carried Altair.
The palace crashed down onto the Black Fortress. Absolutely obilerating both into nothing.
As for Bomberman and Regulus, they were back in Bomber Planet safely. Regulus -throwing- setting Bomberman down.
"The 4 of us were barely able to steal the Omni Cube from him..."
"Yet you were able to defeat him. I must respect your abilities, but that doesn't change the fact that i dislike you!"
"Someday, you and I will settle this. Until then, take care of yourself!!" I did play through the entirety of The Second Attack, so i figured out rather quickly that this was foreshadowing Bulzeeb and such.
And Regulus flew away. Bomberman turned around to see Black Bomber, Red Bomber and Blue Bomber.
      "I did it!"
And they all did their little happy victory pose.
As i could feel a smile grow on my face.
Roll the credits! It was pretty much the same as the normal ending's credits sequence, though with a few funnies here and there. With the Rainbow Palace scenes added in to the mix.
Damn. This was an experience i couldn't forget. Finding an entirely new portion of a game you used to play for a very long time. New stages, features, a mind-destroying twist. Having been unaware of its true ending for so long. What it has been hiding from you. I've always found it so interesting. I've always loved that feeling.
That's why Bomberman 64 is one of my favorite N64 games to this day.
And i'm writing this right as i'm just starting it back up.

BomberMan 64: The Second Attack has a bad ending where a god demon kills all of your friends, and is on the path to destroying and recreating reality, and giving himself ultimate power. So.... Yeah.

I don't know why but now in most games I am able to tell a lot of twists before they happen. The only games that have been able to surprise me were from they SMT, Bioshock, and Xenoblade games. For this game it only took a small amount of time to pick up the twist, but it still is pretty solid and it does give motivation to complete the final level and defeat the final boss.

    • @warioland523
      @warioland523 8 лет назад

+Aiden Estanislao Yeah Regulus is much tougher in Second Attack because he specializes in shadow magic. In addition to his blade attack he can summon a dark bird like creature that charges at you and does decent damage and also can create gravity wells that will destroy Bomberman in one hit. Definitely one of the tougher of the knights to fight but it's quite fitting since he is the last one (not counting Rukifellth) and he knows Bomberman on a more personal level.

I remember how that game was full of secret, some of the golden cards were awful to find and some of them were impossible to guess without the help of video game magazine.
You also forget to talk about the jester boss in the game, when my brothers and me were kid, we thought that jester was the true last boss because of how hard he was for us , then we discovered that there was another true final last boss. What an adventure! Only old games got those kind of feeling of accomplishment for doing 100% in a game.
