    Beautiful timelapses. How come I haven't noticed your channel before, was I asleep all this time? 😊My favorite is the scene at 1:00, the flare of the sun on the calm water, the redness of the light as it deepens through the lapse and lights the foreground.
    I have dabbled with timelapse photography as a hobby in the past. It is so much effort involving trial and error to get the initial footage, and then the time for post, it's a wonder any of us do it.
    In my experience, man made light pollution is the enemy when trying to capture the detail in the night sky. I guess that's why observatories are in the middle of nowhere at high altitudes. I gave up trying to lapse the night sky when I originally got interested in photography, I never got the results I hoped for. Last year I got back into it again, armed with a gimbal, a Nikon Z7, a Fuji XT-4, I finally got satisfactory results during a trip to the Alps. It took over 40k shots to create the final timelapse ( 2/3 of which were discarded ). It was dark and cold in those Alps, but the thin clear air allowed so much more of the details. The sensor technology has moved on since I first started, but where I really noticed the difference was with the editing software, being able to clean up the noise and sharpen the images brought those fine details into focus. Anyhow, I'm pleased to share it on my unimportant non-monetised channel. I've hit the 👍and it's a well earned subscribe from me

    Hello Mike, I am into landscape photography and own the Z mount 24-70 F2.8 and also the 70-200 F2.8. I now want to shoot the milky way but I hesitate between the 14-24 F2.8 and 20 F1.8 + (14-30 F4 for wider landscape). What would be the best choice considering the 20 + 14-30 is about the same price as the 14-24?

    • @Milkywaymike
      @Milkywaymike  2 года назад +1

      I've owned all 3 lenses and currently now I just own the 20 1.8 and 14-24 2.8. The Old 14-24 2.8 and now the new S mount 14-24 2.8 is my main workhorse for landscape and nightscape photography. While the 14-30 f4 was equally as sharp as the 14-24 2.8s, I need that extra stop of light when doing night work.
      If you plan on exclusively stacking / tracking images and taking long exposure foregrounds or twilight blends then you can absolutely get away with the 14-30 F4. If you plan on doing astro time lapse work then the 14-24 2.8 will be the better option over the F4. I do time lapses as well as still images, so that's why having the 2.8 was important to me. I tried doing a milky way time lapse with the 14-30 F4 and I was not please with how much I had to increase the ISO to compensate for the lack of light.
      The 20mm is also great, but less versatile than the 14-24 2.8. In this case I'd prefer having the focal range of the 14-24 over the extra stops of light you get with 20mm. I tend to stop down my F1.8 lenses to around F2.2 or 2.8 to increase the corner to corner sharpness and reduce lens astigmatisms. If I had to pick a "do-it-all" landscape / nightscape lens I would stick with the 14-24 2.8. If you don't see yourself doing milky way time lapses using an ultra wide lens than you can definitely get away with the 14-30 and 20mm combo.
      Around 14 : 50 mark in this video I compare a starry night sky taken with the 20mm and the 14-28 2.8 ruclips.net/video/oAx5PZGCZog/видео.html

    Mike, fantastic work. It looks like you used the 14mm end of the 14-24mm f/2.8, and also the 20mm f/1.8.
    Some of the other shots of the Milky way though, did you use a longer focal length? like at 2:10?

    • @Milkywaymike
      @Milkywaymike  2 года назад +2

      That was the 20mm as well. All the Timelapse’s in this video were with the 14-24, 20 and I used a fisheye for my through the tent time lapse.

    Hi I'm new to your channel. When n where are the best times of year to view to Milky Way?

    • @Milkywaymike
      @Milkywaymike  2 года назад +1

      Hello, thanks for subscribing! I have a 20min video for beginners who want to get into Milky Way photography that I recommend you check out to get some good tips. ruclips.net/video/-HLfG1MRDEM/видео.html
      To answer you question is a little tricky depending on your location. If you are in America, typically the Milky Way rises East and south East early in the year and early in the morning (February, March and April). Then as the months progress the Milky Way rises sooner and sooner at night and continues drifting from East to south from May - July. August September and October are typically south to west.
      Check out stellarium.org for a free program that shows you dates and times of the Milky Way. You also want to photograph it during a new moon
