- Petey Piranha has been part of Mario's rogues gallery for 20 years now, but where did he come from? That's what I hope to find out in today's theory!

Can't wait for Partners in Time 2 to shed light on Gooper Blooper's mysterious interdimensional origins.
Great theory, the Dino Piranha gene mixing is a great way to explain why Petey doesn’t look purple like all the other shroob Mutants.
I'd love to see more theory-crafting and lore explanation videos like this one in the future!
But if Petey as as recent as the Shroob invasion, how can there be a ruined temple so ancient that it ended up being partly submerged seemingly dedicated to worshipping him?
Who says the temple is ancient, or was even originally built to specifically honour him? There are generic Piranha Plant ruins all over the Gritzy Caves - it’s even entirely possible that the ruins were altered to honour this new deity, especially since all of the Petey effigies are all in perfect condition.
There are also “Ruins” in the Kong Civilisation that are likely relatively recently constructed structures, so either way it’s entirely plausible.
This theory is simply fantastic! This video is really well-edited and fun, you must've put a lot of effort to make it as good as it is.
Everything fits, the ruins, the Shroobs, the piranha plants of the bean kingdom. Now it makes sense
(By the way this is the first video i've seen of yours)
i love how this franchise is so damn consistent accidentally lol
like, Nintendo and Alphadream DEFINITELY didn't even thought of an explanation for his origin, but this theory makes so much sense that i can't help but believe it lol. Amazing video!
Yes, I did notice that Sunshine’s Peter Piranha was a fake, and that he resembled other Piranha plant species. Thanks for asking, ruclips.net/user/Seandwalsh
Great theory! I’m just confused about the ruins though, since being ruins generally implies being ancient, certainly much older than the 25 some years that would’ve passed from Partners in Time to modern day. Piranha Plant Cove being in the ocean as implied by its code name could mean its a significant distance away from Gritzy Desert. I’m sure something could be worked out to explain this though, and I’d be interested in hearing this aspect be fleshed out further.
On a side note, I’m laughing because Petey Piranha is the featured article on the Mario Wiki the same day you posted this
Ruins aren’t necessarily ancient, and even if they are the statues weren’t necessarily there from the getgo. If they were already Piranha Plant ruins then the arrival of Petey Piranha as a powerful Piranha Plant could’ve caused the locals to revere him and alter the statues in their temples to reflect his arrival.
The alternative is that the statues are prophetic, but that’s lame. This is also why I think the Ruins on Donkey Kong Island are very recent, as some depict the modern Donkey Kong while others depict things like Girders and Oil Barrels from the Metro Kingdom.
Deserts can be and often are near the ocean, and I am suggesting that they’d likely be connected via an underground tunnel system regardless.
And yeah, I noticed that too when researching earlier today…
Good point about DK Island!
Very good theroy, quite good evidence
That's actually a good theory, can't wait for more content! Great work!
My personal, highly unscientific head-canon is that Petey is descended from both a Piranha Bean and Naval Piranha, the _Yoshi's Island_ boss. This is mostly because of Naval's... navel... being its weak point, an unusual vulnerability that Petey shares.
I will say that your proposition is much more comprehensive, though. After all, Petey's most *unnatural* feature is *stated to be his oversized head...* ...Which may have been a consequence of the combination of the relatively small Piranha Bean with the gargantuan Dino Piranha.
Naval Piranha was also created by Kamek’s magic. It’s unlikely they exist in the natural world. Perhaps the Shroobs also took some Naval Piranha DNA for Petey though.
So his mother is a mean green mother from outer space?
Petey might open a little shop of horrors
Thought the same thing when I saw this
I'm so glad I've found another channel who cares about the mario lore canon.
Very interesting theory, good editing too it’s a step above some of your ones before this one!
I LOVE THIS THEORY! Great work!
I'm so glad there's a video detailing everything this theory, I had coincidentally come up with the same theory in late 2021 but hadn't considered as many details as this one had, I noticed Petey's similarity to Piranha Beans, but I hadn't noticed the Chuckola reference in PIT which further cemented that connection
Petey piranha reminds me of audrey 2
Great video, I've been waiting for a new video and it's great. Hope you make more fun theories like this!
Really cool theory, love the connections
Pretty cool they were going for him being some kind of mutant from fairly early on
The only thing about this theory that bothers me is the color scheme since the other Shroob mutants and the shroobs themselves are purple while Petey isn’t but this could be because of the Dino DNA
Great theory
Swiggler is red/green, so Shroob mutants can come in all sorts of colours!
@@seandwalsh3 ah ok 👍
Really good theory
If Petey is a shroob creation then that means that all games with petey happened after partners in time, but in mario sunshine egadd
didn't invent yet a time machine
Petey exists in the past of Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time, therefore the Time Machine is not relevant.
@@seandwalsh3from one of your r/marioverse comments you said that baby bowser and the koopa army defeated the shroobs before they could invade the mushroon kingdon if future mario and luigi didn't travel to the past, but doesn't make sense since Egadd didn't creat the time machine, so bowser jr couldnt have copie petey. I hope i explained well
@@drfardnerd5596 they didn’t defeat the Shroobs before they invaded the Mushroom Kingdom, they just defeated the Shroobs before they took over the Mushroom Kingdom and the rest of the planet. Petey would’ve been made before they were defeated.
Hey do you have a place where you keep a recording of all your interpretations of Mario lore? I know you are one of the moderators for r/Marioverse so I figured you would. I would really like to see a mastered rundown on Mario and you seem like the best person to supply it with how much you know
Recording in what sense? I have various documents and a timeline of games, and I share most of my discoveries on the discord server (link in the description). I’m also happy to answer any questions, either casually or through my Tumblr asks.
@@seandwalsh3 I was referring to documentation thank you
very nice theory
Great video! I respect your work a lot, the arguments are great.
0:14 that was the scariest thing I've ever seen ever
Really well researched
Although I like to note that Petey in Strikers has paint based abilities as we can tell. Clone, mayhaps?
Thank you.
The Petey Piranha in Mario Strikers Charged actually doesn’t have paint based abilities - he’s the real Petey, and he spits mud instead of goop.
I was your 2000th subscriber 😊
I noticed the similarities but that just it
I just noticed you pronounce Yoshi how most British people do, with that "oh" sound rather than "owe" sound
That’s the way Yoshi himself pronounces it, so that’s what I go with
That's an amazing theory. I couldn't find any contradiction so It's all but confirmed for me
If Petey is a shroob creation then that means that all games with petey happened after partners in time, correct?
After Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time’s past, as that’s when the Shroob invasion happened, yes.
cool headcanon
Hey Man have you ever played Mario Maker 1 & 2?
I’ve played both
@@seandwalsh3 Themes you want in Mario Maker 3.
@@mohdadeeb1829 they should finish them off. Tower, Volcano, Mountain and Beach.
@@seandwalsh3 Maybe you won't read this but here's my solution to "Theme" / "Course Element" problem of Mario Maker. Give us Theme (Like Grass Land or Water) and an element (Like Overworld or Underworld). We can have 40+ Course Elements not counting Night Time Theme.
I think that you should make a Mario universe timeline video, you'll become famous, and it's the one that makes most sense tbh.
Pretty sure a Mario timeline is impossible. In Luigi's Mansion, the Mario Bros. meet E. Gadd for the first time while Bowser is dead but in Partners in Time they already know him even though Bowser is still alive. I guess Bowser could have been somehow resurrected but good luck finding anything to support that.
@@victzegopterix2victorindem895 Bowser was dead?
@@pasalasaga, yes, and real death, not a lava bath to go back in the next game, no coming back, Bowser himself never is in the Luigi's Mansion games after all. Iirc, this information is given by the fortune teller ghost in the first Luigi's Mansion. Not sure if it's ever mentioned in other part of the game though but it's here. T'makes kinda sense with the final boss I guess.
@victzegopterix2victorindem895 A Mario Timeline is quite easily done if you actually pay attention to what’s said in the games. Bowser is not dead in the Luigi’s Mansion games, obviously. Madame Clairvoya only says Mario defeated Bowser, which he has done several times, and she herself has been trapped in a painting for years.
Luigi’s Mansion is set around the mid-point of the timeline.
@@seandwalsh3, the word used is indeed defeated but the rest of the quote makes it very clear that Bowser is really dead, Clairvoya is surprised to see Bowser and wonders right after "Has King Boo somehow *revived* Bowser? This could be horrible!". Also, it's not exactly said that Bowser was defeated, it is said "I thought that Mario had *soundly defeated* Bowser!", he wasn't defeated like he always is, he was completely defeated, he's not supposed to come back as he normally always does. Or else how could he be revivable. He's just dead in the Luigi's Mansions.
I had a feeling Shroobs were the original owners of Petey
Um..., he's obviously King Shroomses's brother because they have the same eye and nose color smh my head
Thus is all great except I don't think he's meant to be a fake
In Super Mario Sunshine he is intended to be fake
@@seandwalsh3 That really isn't what the developers were going for. While there are fake bosses like King boo Petey seems to be intended to be real. We see in the New Super Mario series he's one of Bowser's go to Minions. I also seriously doubt they made his first appearance a fake him.
Edit: Great channel btw
@@__Soya__ It is explicitly what the developers were going for. King Boo and Petey were both fakes, as almost every enemy in the game is. That’s why he melts into paint, they have confirmed this. Originally a real Petey Piranha may not have even been intended to exist.
petey piranha, more liked kino basedranha

Hey Sean, I have a question to ask.
Go ahead
@@seandwalsh3 How can I convince my brother that Paper Mario and Mario & Luigi is canon?
@@Wacky_Plumber well I would ask why your brother doesn’t think that Mario & Luigi is canon. It’s referenced in the main series games and published by Nintendo, so in order to convince him they’re canon we would have to understand his perspective.
As for Paper Mario, I would recommend reading this post:
www.reddit.com/r/Marioverse/comments/10ogc2y/yes_paper_mario_is_canon/?
@@seandwalsh3 Thank you, I'll show this to him.
@@seandwalsh3 I think the post you recommend worked, he now believes Paper Mario is canon. As for Mario & Luigi im still not sure, I'll try getting his perspective on it.
I don't think the Mario and Luigi series is canon to mainline Mario though
The Mario & Luigi series is absolutely canon to mainline. It’s confirmed.
Why wouldn’t it be?
I just thought it wasn't canon because it wasn't made by Nintendo
Nice video btw 👍
@@countbleck132 the series was made by Nintendo in collaboration with Alphadream. Pretty much as long as Nintendo Published a game, it’s canon.
Thank you!

It stress me out a bit that you referred Peetee Piranha as a "he/him"
Those are the pronouns he’s referred to with in the games and therefore the ones I will use.
@@seandwalsh3 but in some regions she's not referred as a "he" for example in France and Belgium Peetee is a "she/her" like i just referred to her earlier (so honestly it could be preferable to referred her as a it/they or whatever)
