- Starting with a hunk of butternut wood, I carved a set of handmade frames for a pair of custom reading glasses.
This project is just one of many in a collaboration with other makers as part of the Butternut Challenge. Be sure to watch the others here: tinyurl.com/bu....

The tight grain tells me that’s old-growth butternut, an excellent hardwood closely related to black walnut. Very slow growing, logging and butternut canker wiped-out the the trees from the era that chunk came from, iirc.
I was given an old 1936 upright piano some 20 years ago. In the process of tearing it down and removing veneer (to restore), I found that the entire frame-including the soundboard-was entirely old-growth butternut. Super rare. You’re lucky to have that. And nice job, as usual.
Excellent work, coming from an optometrist here! I continue to be amazed at the level of ingenuity and imagination displayed on RUclips!
Hinge..I will pop off a old pair. So interesting to watch..
Great job! I showed my kid, and he said, oh you can make a pair for me. I have some butternut left! Bonus challenge. Love the solution you came up with for the hinges.
Bravo Wesley! Those turned out so good!! Love that you burnt in the grain, and that little pop of aluminum is awesome.
Maestro ...gracias por la paciencia y la didáctica para mostrar la diferencia entre los que hacen y los que hablan.... aprendí muchísimo... alegría, armonía,, amor, abundancia, prosperidad, salud...para ud y su familia
Wow.. I'm impressed.. Build that frames are really the challenge.. So tiny and easy to break from a minimal mistake.. They turned out great, kudos!
Your expressions are animated already, but the glasses somehow take it to full cartoon!
In a good way!
Very impressive Wesley! Thanks for sharing
amazingly meticulous and creative, in use of tools and materials.
and you butternut continue with punz
The rotating podium with drill at the end 👍👍
You ButterNut! Nice work Wesley.
I become a bigger fan with each vid Wesley. Love the subjects, the filming and editing. Gives me something to look forward to watching!
Awesome 👌 Brilliant 👌 Unique
I'm totally going to try this for a pair of sunglasses! Not in butternut though I'll use some black walnut from the tree in my yard!
Loved these, but I think the lazy suzan at the end was the best. LOL.
You have the hands of a surgeon. Every time I used a dremel, it looks like I was doing so while getting eletroshock therapy.
I know, right?!
Those are the coolest glasses I think I have ever seen 😉
Looks very good. Well done
Such a fine man and a cool project.
SPEC-tacular result! I can SEE why you were included! You were CLEARLY abled to achieve your VISION. Alternate pun base achievement unlocked, no Butternut puns were harmed in the making of this comment. Everything else aside, you made the tiniest, most adorable spindle sander ever, if that's not reason enough to subscribe, I don't know what is. Cheers!
🛑✋
When those lenses both _snapped_ into place, I was literally agape! Congratulations for being the first person ever to give me cause to use that word in a sentence!!!
My first impression was, "He mailed himself a block of wood". Or was it just for you know hilarious content. But, that was pretty awesome.
BTW.... Great craftsmanship love it.
Good looking piece of wood.
Absolutely brilliant.
That jig is awesome gonna make one for my foredom. This will help me so much cleaning up my jewelry. Thanks a lot! Nice glasses btw 🤓
I learn so many tips and tricks watching your videos. Thank you!
Love the diy turntable
Those look awesome and comfortable. I don't wear mine as much as I should, but mine are plastic and uncomfortable to wear as they were warped in my truck during summer.
I love your work and mental state :)
That hinge 👌🏾😘
What a wonderful piece of art! Congratulation Sir! 🎩
They look great!
Ha! When I saw the debut on Instagram I thought you had totally CNC'd those glasses. Well done for going all old school.
Regards,

Wow I want a pair!!!
❤ just brilliant Sir... Love from India ❤
I'd recognize a Shop Smith band saw guard anywhere. Nice job.
Perfection at its highest position 👌👍😊
Nicely done.
Impressive work. That's the kind of project I would consider, but would never try. I like it.
looks amazing apart from the bridge which looks a bit thick but that's personal preference! nice job!
Simply awesome, Great job.
Pretty cool, I wish I would buy a pair.
Very clever 😀

Well you certainly made a spectacle out of that, you could see yourself winning lol
Really nice!
Brilliant !
The end presentation was too cool...
These look sweet! Thanks for sharing!
So superb to discover you. Always wanted to make my own spectacle frame. Now I have no excuses! Damn!
They turned out really well!!
Beautiful work.
Great job!
You also aced your challenge.
Very good...! 👍
These came out so spectacular!! For reals, I want a pair 🤓 (my prescription is -6.25... in case you need it...)
Awesome awesome job!
Fabulous glasses!! And I am so going to make a jig like that for my rotary tool! That is genius! And the business card sanding spacer? So good!
So many great techniques for all the detail work. It's a super cool idea and you did a fantastic job!
Incrível , habilidade , parabéns congratulação very crazy

Very neat.
Those turned out wonderfully! Love your videos
Cooooooool 👍👍👍👍👍
Buen trabajo.. Good job...
I wasn't sure if I should subscribe, but then you made a glorious pun and I couldn't help myself! Great looking glasses :)
Absolutely amazing dude...
Imperfectly perfect 👌
Felicidades, eres muy bueno, donde se aprende hacer esas bellezas y como consigo los moldes.
...and here I was expecting you to modify the cellulose to make optically transparent butternut lenses!
In any case, really nice work. I always look forward to your videos.
I was thinking about making a dolly for my motorcycle, weights 900 lbs. i was thinking about your single action castor lift, that would be perfect if I could work it out to drop the dolly to the floor while loading and unloading the motorcycle, then raise it to move it to store the motorcycle away when not needed. Do you think there is enough leverage with your single action castor lift to pickup 900 lbs motorcycle + the weight of the dolly??
A fabulous vidéo
really omg good job!!!!!!! ... where do you buy the wood? i am an optician and i want give a try...
Me gusta y es muy inspirador. 🤓
Super cool
Super 👌🏾 man
Wow 😍😍
clever, clever.
Amazing
I am so impressed with how well you cut those lens grooves.
The burn marks do look nice, but don't the ones on the inner surface where the lenses go grab your attention constantly?
My peripheral vision isn't that incredible. 🤓
Hello, Each time is a suprise ! This one is a really fragile challenge..success
So you can see through aaaand point at people with them. You just need them to hold hair back and they complete the trilogy of successful spectacles
you are genius
Looks Great 🤙🏻
“Oh Fred, your new glasses look so good!”
“Thanks, Wilma!”
Great work. Thanks for sharing !
What was the spray you used to treat the wood in the end?
I have never thought about just shipping a a log. Wouldn't need a box because it is it's own box. LMFAO!
Hi. Loved watching your video. never came across any such idea of creating specs out of wood. Great job.
I wanted to know about the sanding machine with big sand drums that you used prior to using dremel and in between also.... I needed one like this for my workshop.... Thanks.
Thanks! It's the Ridgid oscillating spindle sander. 👍
@@WesleyTreat Thanks...
Parabéns !!!
Great products! It’s value to enshrine !
This is great! (butternot the pun)
