    Great video and as a fellow musician I use a Synology in my studio, one of the best investments I ever made. One thing to mention, RAID is not a backup and only provides redundancy. You still need to ensure there is an off-site backup in case the worst ever happens. Any projects I have done in the last 12 months are backed-up off-site in the cloud. Anything else is archived on two separate drives and stored off-site. It may sound overkill, but at least you will have access to your old archived music projects.

      Thanks Adrian. It's a life saver for sure. I believe I mentioned that you would need to incorporate your NAS into a full backup system and can't just rely on it solely as a backup. I also mentioned in my previous storage video in more detail about RAID and the pros and cons/ dos and don'ts. It can't be overstated though i guess. Great to have you here and I hope your music is going well :)

    Can it work for samples ? To load & store samples? Kontakt, omnisphere, all….?

    I like the video but I was really hoping for a demonstration of workflow with an emphasis on version control. For example if your NAS connection and processing involved WEREN"T good enough to edit directly from the NAS, and/or the project is just too complex, does your collaborator have to download all the files in the project folder, work on them, save a new project with maybe some new audio files, and then what? Do they have to hunt and peck all the new files and add those back to the NAS or just add them all to a new folder, or what? I'd like to prevent having multiple copies of the same audio files constantly being downloaded and uploaded at every handoff. But I'd also like to prevent having to hand pick each of the new files from several existing or new folders and then handpicking where those files should go back on the NAS.

      great question. I am still learning as I go. Currently i just work off of the SSDs and external HDs i have and use the NAS as a backup system but i have opened and run music and video editing projects from it and it has been smooth overall.

    thanks for the video! a bit random: couldn't help but notice your fancy white Kali Audio LP-6 monitors. i also have these and love them. looks like the corners of the covers are peeling back a bit (mine are too -- bummer)

      thanks. yeah I have heard that lots of them in that particular release of products had that same issue but they have resolved it in the newer ones. its just cosmetic thankfully

    I came across this video trying to figure out how I could use a server in music production.
    I don't make songs I work live, have never lost a sample I didn't delete. Lost months of work in a second more times than I can count.

    Great video on the topic! What about cloud backup - what have you done using it for that? as in disaster recovery and having multiple backups in different places off site using Synology? And do the bays or racks offer anything useful for music and video storage? or is it just form factor and expansion that you know? ... thanks liked/subscribed!

    How about access time? Is it fast enough for working with large audio libraries like Opus? What network connection do you use? With 1 Gbps the transfer rate is quite low when you load big projects. Network protocols are not enough for large orchestral arrangement and working with low latencies in my opinion... What do you think about it?

    Nice video - What about read/write of audio files on the NAS from within the DAW, fast enough?

      thank you! yeah its fast enough. I work from the NAS in FL Studio and for editing videos with audio and video files on the NAS directly.

    Nice video! Question: Why do you use an external HDD that you connect via USB instead of working directly from the NAS using something like RAID 1 for example? It seems like a little bit of an extra hassle to backup the external HDD once in a while

      So I use the NAS to back up and to work from but I work from an external SSD because its much faster for working and transferring files to. I dont mind doing some manual back ups at the end of each day or week although yes it wouldbe great if it was all automated :) thanks

    Hey mate , thanks for the video , I’m running out of storage in my studio and I came across with all the NAS concept .
    I just have a quick question, is it possible to install the komplete 14 libraries in the NAS and use them in an ableton project anywhere ? .
    Which means I wouldn’t need an external hard drive with me at all , just a good internet connection?
    I want to be able to open my ableton projects and work anywhere without needing to move a 12 TB hard drive with me every time I go on tour . Cheers

      hey! this is a really good question and not something I am able to comment on from direct experience. I think the limitation here would come down to the speed of the router/wifi that you used to connect to the NAS. When I work from the NAS at home I am directly connected to it via an ethernet cable so that I get 1GB/s speeds. It coudl be possible to use remotely but I dont know if it would run fast enough to play Kontakt libraries in real time, wirelessly. There may be some artists who have tried that online, worth having a look around forums to see. Sorry I couldnt help more but I will keep you updated if I find out anything more. Cheers

    Great video!
    I have loads of sample packs and sound libraries for music production, I work off of an external SSD. Would a NAS be fast enough to load all of my sound libraries and strictly use that for production? I know you said you use an external, but you also said you can work from the NAS directly in video editing.

    • @iambradarthur
      @iambradarthur  2 года назад +1

      Thanks, I’m glad it was helpful. I think if you got a NAS that was fast enough (at least 1gb but better 10Gb) then yes you could work from it, so long as the project wasn’t huuuge and the cpu was running smoothly.

    • @blackmetalblackmass
      @blackmetalblackmass 2 года назад

      @@iambradarthur thank you for the fast response! This seems like a much better option than using multiple external SSDs to access different sound libraries. Have a good one!
