When I was in my late 50's, there was a man that came to my apartment door and rang the doorbell. I looked out the blinds. He had an exterminator spray can, but was not wearing a uniform. It was early February and had been snowing. To my knowledge, exterminators don't exterminate in February up North because there are no bugs. I got a strong gut feeling not to open the door. Being female and alone, I was afraid to go to the door, and I didn't. He left. About an hour later, I left to run some errands in town and noticed that my door was the only door that he had been to. I am convinced that I was targeted. He could have came in and pulled a knife or gun on me demanding money and nobody would have seen anything. Renters, if someone comes to your door wanting to exterminate, etc. and they're not wearing a company uniform or they just look off, don't go to the door!

Better than lights on a timer. If you have a cat, have a light near the food and another near the litter box with both on motion detectors. The cat walks into the bathroom for the litter box and the light comes on, then off. The same with the kitchen for food. All of these will occur at random times rather than preset times on a schedule.

So I live in a small house in Alaska and one morning I saw footprints in the snow outside my window. Since it's just me and my girlfriend and neither of us went in our backyard at the time, really made my butt pucker up. So the next day I installed sensor lights outside my doors and windows. That night I saw a light come, I jumped out of bed and opened the curtain to see 3 men walking towards my window. Two of them had blunt weapons and the other had a big kitchen knife. I screamed "Oh shit!", grabbed my gun and started running towards my front door which was the direction I saw the men running towards. I had a little trouble opening my piece shit door but when I did I saw them all ready driving off in a black pickup truck. I wanted to shoot at them but I didn't want to risk shooting into my neighbors house. I got a partial license plate number and called the police. Luckily before I even told dispatch everything an officer already pulled them over for speeding. The cops then detained them and searched their vehicle. What they found is truly horrifying. They found several tools, blades, lube, and bindings in the bag that one was carrying. After identifying the men, two of them were registered sex offenders and the other one went to high school with my girlfriend and she swore that he use to stalk her in high school. The cops are investigating them more trying to see if they have involvement in the string of rapes in the city. I have a good idea what they were planning on doing and it made me and my girlfriend very paranoid. All I know now is, next time I see that light come on at night...THEY will go into the light.

If you are in an apartment or have a home with a swing in door, get a door security brace. They range from the simple under the door knob versions to ones that are securely installed which is preferred. Even a simple door brace can delay entry by someone kicking in your door giving you time to wake up, arm yourself and call police.
Make sure to have a plan to put yourself in a secure defense position. Don’t go trying to search and destroy for an intruder who has gained entry - let them come to your defensive position where you engage them with your firearm with you in control of the engagement. Don’t yell out you are home and don’t provide warning. If the intruder enters your defensive position, fire at their center of mass. When they fall, maintain your position until police arrive and the police can search and secure the premises.

I happened to be in the shower and heard the doorbell, and although I was able to get to the front door taking just a little bit longer than usual, it was long enough for this fool to already assume house empty and began walking around the side of the house to the backyard. Confronted the fool furiously begins his little spiel like nothing had happened. After letting him know that I was most definitely not interested the jackass STILL kept insisting and asking why I wasn’t gonna take him up on his offer I finally let loose informing him that while he was busy flapping I’d already ascertained that A) His vehicle had no company logo w required contractor’s license # displayed, B) A generic safety vest just bought at the local supply store, C) No lanyard with proper ID openly displayed, and best of all- D) After initially stating his reason for being on property was that his boss had asked him to go around and drum up some business…..he was apparently doing so after neglecting to bring along SOME BUSINESS CARDS for said “business”. Then told him next time I saw him…….in half 😳

@Brian Wilson Only a fool would try breaking into someones home when they know or at least have reason to believe they are armed and at home, most criminals like easy targets that don't shoot at them. It is true though that they may break into your home when they think no one is home to get your guns but they would also worry that you may come home to find them and then they could be facing an armed defender. Many people keep their guns locked up when they are not at home or with them as far as a defensive handgun is concerned so it would be logical to think the average bugler would think breaking into a home with a sign like that is too high of a risk for a reward that has a low probability of being attained. That being said some criminals are just plain stupid and those are the ones that will either get lucky and steal your stuff when you are away or get shot for trying it while your home. You know the layout of your home better that they do and you can put yourself in the best defensive position at the first sign of trouble as in you hear someone pry or kick a door, this gives you a tactical advantage. Your highest priority is the lives of your family members and if there are two houses on a particular street and one has this sign while the other just has a welcome sign which one is more likely to be broken into in the middle of the night while your family is sleeping.

As a custom security device I'm thinking of the porch roof-mounted 2-gallon gasoline dump tank that is activated when excessive force is applied to the front door. When a potential intruder is suddenly doused with 2 gallons of regular unleaded he's probably expecting something so horrible next that he'll lose all interest in breaking into your home. The need to immediately flee as fast as possible will jump to the top of his mental "To-Do List".
Just for fun, as he is running for his vehicle, stand in the garage door as it is raising up holding your Zippo and ask the question, "Need a Light"? :-)

A security specialist offered this advice. Get a door stop, the kind you can buy in the dollar store in packs of 3. If you can shove one under the front and back door, not always possible I know. Shove one under your bedroom door at night, that is possible with most doors. This specialist said it is almost impossible to break down the door with them under it. I have tried it and it definitely works. He also said you should pack them with you when you go on vacation and use then on the doors, also keep one in your bag so if their is an attack of some sort or someone is trying to attack you when you are out of home, you can use it to lock yourself in somewhere until help arrives.

    - Two very large dog dishes (one on each side of the front door)
    - a few spent shotgun shells in the ashtray
    - a chewed up cow femur that my dogs like to take turns on

    • @drjonesey5
      @drjonesey5 2 года назад +1

Unsure what you mean how common place like it's a new thing in human history. There have always been those that will steal and or kill you. The idea that people now are more crazy is not true. I think what has occurred is that more people live closer together due to have we create communities now so we see more if what already occurred and when the introduction of technology and data bases we are able to track it and see it via social media, news and the like now vs 100 years ago, 200 years ago 500 years ago for example where if someone went missing, was anyone really tracking that nation wide? No. The town or community maybe, but not the entire nation.
I think failure to punish evil, government focus on all things other than their initial creation which was to keep order, insure the rights of the people are followed and punish evil is why a lot of this stuff does not decrease in occurrence.

A month later they broke in again because I left a gym bag, again without breaking a window. I'm sure they were after an iPod or something other than my dirty undies, but ended up with about $.75. I learned my lesson. I had 1 more break in until I asked to borrow my GFs dog for 6 months and he woke me up 2X and was quiet enough the third time to allow me to call the cops and have the guy arrested. I also have the Petcube cameras to dispense treats and have a laser show for my cats.
Although I know they sell pet proof motion sensors, I’ve found that having ones that are not pet proof have worked well for me because my cats turn the kitchen lights on, when they go into the kitchen to eat. So, just having them here, doing that, provides a lived-in look.

Do not forget the usefulness of defensive landscaping. Here in southern Nevada, I am in the process of planting a "hedge" of cholla cactus, prickly pear cactus and Spanish bayonet yuccas on my side of the five foot concrete block wall that fences in my back yard and side yards. Each spring I plant more cactus cuttings in this hedge and now only have about 20 remaining feet of hedge on my half acre house lot to finish. I am also working on planting thorny plants under all the windows on the side of the house that is least visible from the street or from neighboring houses. My intention is that if another group of young male thieves trespasses through my neighborhood at night jumping walls and breaking into poorly secures homes and cars, like they did four years ago, anyone jumping over my wall is going to land into a world of thorny hurt. And the motion-detecting exterior lights on my house will give me a good view of their misery while I wait inside with my loaded firearm watching for local law enforcement to show up and make some arrests. The great thing about teddy bear cholla plants is that the thorny pads break off easily, the thorns can penetrate thick leather, anyone using their hands to remove the thorny pads from elsewhere will get the pads stuck on their hands too and those thorns work in deeply. Kind of like running into a porcupine. Instant karma without having to use any ammo.

    • @LierinEdana
      @LierinEdana Год назад +3

We've done much the same with different plants for our climate. We took it a step further and also planted a decorative patch of thornies in areas that were out of our line of sight from inside the home but with non-thorny plants to mostly camouflage them as far as casual view. This makes it almost impossible (I suppose there are a few masochists that might revel in that sort of mess lol) for anyone trying to sneak in, particularly in the dark, without being funneled to where we can see them. This, combined with motion detectors that each sound a different tone aimed around the yard, and motion lights that are fairly blinding seem to have convinced just about everyone and all but one seriously determined ground hog that 'we know' (and there is a sticker on the front door that says that outright ... Skyrim fans will get it lol). All of that and I have two roosters that love to snitch on anyone or anything that they can see, and our dog who manages to tell us about just about any noise he hears mean we have a pretty good idea if the yard has been invaded long before anyone tries to invade the house. If I could, I would still have guineafowl and peafowl in the yard because nothing gets by either of those. Best of all, they roost in trees at night and the ruckus they make is ear splitting but no one can see them or bribe them.

if someone uses the doorbell or knock at night DO NOT APPROACH WITH THE LIGHT ON INSIDE
if someone is at the door on the outside and you approach from the inside with the lights on they WILL KNOW YOU ARE AT THE DOOR... something that is not always good ...
leave the outside porch light on or with sensor at night NEVER just walk up then turn it on to see who is out there..... that will and can get you hurt if the criminal can use against you

if you happen to always keep the light on in the hallway at night, you can hang two layers of fabric over the peep hole. One small square directly over the hole, the second a larger flap, like one of those old fashioned capes photographers used to hide under to avoid the camera flash. When you duck under the first piece of fabric, it blocks the light out behind you so you can peep through the hole without being noticed. More convoluted to explain than it is to actually use lol 😅

If you happen to have to keep your car at a repair shop overnight I ALWAYS remove the garage door opener from the car. Usually not always repair shops will park your car outside. If someone breaks into your car at the repair shop they can get your address from the insurance and registration info most people keep in their glove box and they have your garage door opener in their hand.

I'm seeing a lot of people in the comments who seem to think, "I have a gun." constitutes a complete home defence plan.
If a home invasion gets to the stage where you are in some kind of live-fire situation in the middle of your lounge room with your loved ones in the house, things have already gone *way* beyond your ability to control them.
Taking steps to make your house look like too much trouble to risk an invasion, then taking steps to make it *even more* trouble is the way to go. This video is good. Pay attention to the video.
One thing I note you don't mention is *reinforce your door frames*. Generally when someone smashes in a door, it's not the door that breaks but the frame. A top of the line deadbolt won't do you much good if your door frames are just cheap pine. Of course no door is impregnable, but what you are trying to avoid is someone being able to kick the door in and be pointing a gun in your face before you can escape or arm yourself. A solid hardwood frame reinforced with an unobtrusive metal strip is all you need to change your front door from something that can be breached with a single kick to something that will take a battering before it gives.

An extra protection for your garage door is to put screw drivers or some other metal rod in through the holes in the track right above the little wheels. I do not use my garage door opener, but have a lock instead. However, this can sometimes be circumvented by pushing in and lifting if there is enough play or give to do so. Someone tried entering my garage by doing this, fortunately the screw drivers stopped them. At night I do even more.

  • @shawnr771

    Great general advice.
Most home break ins occur when you are not home in the US. Main reason criminals give is they fear an armed home owner. The thieves will watch you leave for work or school.
Garage doors when you leave and close your garage door get into a habit of watching the door until it is closed. Many people push the button and drive away. In that few seconds some one could enter your garage.
Dogs are great tools. Train your dogs not to bark at trains, firetrucks etc. It is possible with a bit of work on your part.
A continually barking dog is a neighbor annoyance. If your dog is barking at nothing make it stop. Do not let it keep barking. That way when it does bark for a long time your neighbors will hope fully realize something is wrong.

Don't get a dog just for security reasons. They are not machines you can just leave out side the hope they can scare off home invaders. If I was a thief and really wanted to get into your house I would just bring a nice chunky bone and a toy for the dog to be distracted because obviously most dogs that live chained up outside never get the right attention they should be get from their owners. If you get a dog for security atleast let the poor guy inside the house. In my opinion it is better to have them inside because then the invader doesn't know how big the dog is and can't plan a way to go inside. Usually dogs that are kept out side bark at everyone passing by that the owners get used to their dogs barking and it comes to a point that if it was an invader you wouldn't even think their was danger because your dog barks all the time. Keeping your dog inside you would be able to tell why he is barking and your dog would let you know if you need to take any other action.Just don't flaunt your riches. Follow the other steps on this video.

These are good tips for preventing burglaries, but don't seem to be relevant to the type of actual home invasions that have been happening in neighborhoods near where I live. These home invader teams actually want people to be at home when they bust down the front door and then force residents at gun point to open safes. They do not care if security cameras are recording them because they wear masks and know they will be long gone before police arrive. They do not care if they terrorize children or the elderly. Every adult in my home has a conceal carry permit and carries continually when awake and has a loaded gun within reach when sleeping. We have signs posted at each exterior door reminding prowlers that there is nothing inside worth them dying for. And yes, anyone busting down one of our doors when we are home -- and least one adult is at home most of the time -- will be facing gun fire. That's the real way to stop a home invader in his tracks. The best home invader is a dead home invader. And yes we carry shooter's insurance to provide us with free legal coverage if we kill or wound one or more of these criminals.

And the though that you are basically bragging about your friend killing two guys makes me ill. Yes those people may have been disgusting despicable people but to murder them is Simply vile. Unless their lives where at risk which it dint seem to be he could have instead held them at gunpoint then called the police but instead he murdered them. Think of it like this, remember when the British Crown decided to hang ANY and ALL pirates a hundred+ years ago? It made people think twice about pirating. Same concept here. Good people like you and I, Daniel, we can NOT let bad people do bad things, we hurt them in self defence so that they think twice about their actions.

If the invaders get into your attached garage, they have a private workspace away from view with your tools (axe, or whatever) to use to break a hole in the wall into your home. Replace that thin door your homebuilder blessed you with and put in a strong, thick one with a solid lock not made of sheet metal. Bolster the door jambs and hinges and stronger hinge screws also.
