Learn Cantonese Sentence Finals or Particles 1

  • Hi everyone,
A bit of a departure today to talk about something I was asked to do a video on: sentence finals (or particles) (or final particles).
Because Cantonese is a tonal language, these particles are needed to take the stress or emotion of the sentence or to make a sentence a question.
They're super important, but it's not always easy to find out how to learn them ... they just seem like something people say that you have to learn as you go. So I hope this video will help you understand more of why and how to use three of them. (There are a lot more than three, so I hope to do more videos later of some of the others.)
As usual, if you like it, give me a thumbs up and subscribe to my channel! Now that I'm back in Hong Kong, I hope to have more time to do videos for you all.
    Happy learning,
    Sue Marguerite
PS. I upped the volume on this one, so hope it's a bit easier to hear!

PPPS. Learn more Cantonese with me and open new windows into Cantonese culture by taking my Traditional Characters in Cantonese Pronunciation courses over at www.cantolingo.com.
Learn traditional Standard Written Chinese characters, their Cantonese equivalent (if any), the radicals, proper stroke order, and much more! Classes are on-going and combine online self-study with Zoom sessions. This is a university-level course based on materials from the Chinese University of Hong Kong, and is effective and fun!

Hello teacher sue!! This video Particles is really good on handy to know, i was really having many doubts about how to use them and the meaning of each!! I hope you continue this serie cause i really liked it!!! You’re doing so well and good on Cantonese Corner for us learners!! Thank you!! 😉
Im from japan and i usually mix all the Chinese characters reading so, its hard to separate inside my head, i would like to ask how to read my name in cantonese 向井 和雄 (mukai kazuo) in japanese!! Thanks a lot!! 👍👍

Hi Kazuo!! Thanks for commenting and I am so glad you find this one on particles useful. I just posted another with some practice so hope that's helpful as well. :)
I think it's so interesting that Japanese uses some of the Chinese characters ... something that I'm so glad for when shopping at the Japanese supermarkets here since at least I can have some idea what I'm buying! LOL If I could learn another language, it would definitely be Japanese ... it sounds so soft and beautiful.
I have asked my local friends just to be sure how to read your name, and they said "heung" "jéng" "wòh" "hùhng" so middle, middle rising, low falling, low falling. I hope that helps! By the way, your English is excellent!

Thank you Sue! :D In your next video, could you talk about “la”? I have lots of friends who put “la” on the end of sentences in English as well - and it seems to go everywhere and anywhere haha. Hope you’re having a nice evening!

Hi Leo! I had to smile when I read your comment because it reminds me of this license plate on a taxi I've seen here in Hong Kong and it's the perfect answer to your request ... I can't seem to figure out how to insert a picture here, so here's a link to where you'll see it:
      www.hongkongmoms.com.hk/seen-hk-license-plate/
I'll add the "la" to my next lot of particles to do, along with probably "ge" and "me" and more instances where people use the "a". So nice to hear from you!
