@@Maddmike It's true: I've never seen such a complex plot, with so many new twists and turns, in any game. The scale of events is growing and growing, it seems that here it is - the peak of the whole plot - but no, the most interesting and important begins in the epilogue. And I mean, in the truest sense of the word: it begins! The plot of the epilogue is hardly shorter than the game itself, and even new mechanics are introduced!

This was me, too. I had flashbacks to being a kid on the NES with Castlevania 2. Due to the translation error, you would have no idea that you needed to equip the crystal and kneel against a cliff face to be taken by a tornado to the next zone. With no internet back then, you could only progress if you or your buddy had a Nintendo Power magazine to give you the tip.

    • @nesoukkefka1741

@@kevinrieder I mean really ? The puzzle of this game aren't easy, but they are nowhere as cryptic as Castlevania 2's were. His torch issue is actually funny to me, cause logically why the hell would you answer "yes" when a NPC ask you if you are looking for something, that you never even heard of at that point ? I don't know to me when the NPC ask me this my reaction was "The fuck are you talking about ?" and answer no as a result.
I'll agree that there is some tough puzzle, but the hints are most of the time right there, and I saw people struggling and complaining on some of the most obvious puzzle like the Sea Serpent Cave one, and it really makes wonder sometime if player nowaday are really so use to games holding their hand that they are unable to think by themselves ?

@@schmiggidy If you time is precious then pay attention to the hints, for the orbs one the NPC in the cave give you a charade that quite clearly tells you to put the Orb in water, I dunno really almost all puzzles have clear hints weither it's from dialogue or visual clue, that give you the solution right away if you pay attention.
The only puzzle in the game I actually agree is obstuse, in the one on Chapter 5 with the apples, where you have to guess you need to speak with NPC three time IIRC before being able to interact with the apples, to then give them to the 4 NPC in the room, that's the only puzzle I found dumb and blocked me for a while.

I've tried the demo for this game, which prop to the dev is still available, and is actually not a 20 minutes gameplay where you barely have the time to experiment but the 2-3 first, and I like that allow you to perfectly see what you're getting yourself into, and from what I played I can tell this was fun as hell, and I'm definitly gonna picked it up once my backlog had reduce.
And if from what I see on the time people on the steam review the players have put, that game is really an over 70h games and it manage to stay that fun in it's gameplay then I'll say it's price is worth it.

Wait a second, that part with creating a torch in ch.1 was a puzzle? Huh? Also why would you answer "YES, you are looking for scales| when it was the first time you even heard about them and that wasnt your goal to begin with. Its just natural answer to say NO.

you get wood straight at the start whit luck by accidentally breaking trees while fighting, when going to the village you ask this woman on the shop for a torch and she tells you to get "a bundle of wood and resin", you get lots of wood to make it a bundle, now is the resin, oh wait actually i talked whit the girl on the tavern, the one i didnt want to talk since maybe she would promot me another mission and already i have one. She told me that there is an item literally called "bundle of wood" and then i had to ask for resin the same girl i promised i would save his dad, that ol man would have died if i took so much time, still she didnt give a crok and told you that you had to cross a river from the STARTING PLACE, btw you COULDNT cross the river before. That sounds like a puzzle for me, i usually play things like baldurs gate 2 or morrowind. The game needs you to explore and thats amazing and sometimes answers are just outright impossible to get for an old school gamer that has no idea of this new puzzles ppl make nowdays. Its incredible.

I think I’m 30hr in, love this game but it does have some pretty jarring issues.
    1. Enemy scaling is all over the place. I can just mention the boss at the volcano area and everyone here probably know what I’m talking about. Then the bosses after that boss is easier. Then the difficulty ram up when fighting these super soldiers.
    2. The resources(aka money, exp, color skill orbs) doesn’t scale the same way enemies and the zone are scaling. Gears get more expensive but you earn almost the same as 2 chapters ago. There’s no indication of whether you are ready for the current chapter you are in or not

I agreed. I recommend playing first on normal mode unless u want to grind alot. Though doing all the optional activities (leveling up all your armor for abilities and crystals) and doing the arena Coliseum every chapter helped me alot to clear it on Hard. Took me 70+ hours to finish main story. 9/10 game amazing story especially chapter 4-5

Why does it not make sense to you to answer no when asked about the scales?

The idea is that I couldn’t explore the cave because I needed a torch, and rather than doing anything logical to find light…I needed to do weird video game abstraction stuff like talk to someone who had nothing to do with torches.

@Maddmike Fair I guess. I just didn't have your issue because my experience was get into town, enter house, talk to girl. Say no then every other npc after her was very smooth sailing haha.
It isn't the first time I heard people have issue with it. I'm just wondering when talking to all npcs and answering truthfully became weird and esoteric.
I kinda get it though I guess.

Funny I didn't get that issue cause when the girl ask, I was in an RP mindset and since nothing prior to that mention the Scales I was like "The fuck are you talking about ?" and answer no avoiding this all "issue".
In all honnestly tough I don't get the puzzle issue at all, nearly all puzzle have either a NPC giving you hint or a visual hint that point you toward the solution if you pay enough attention, the only exception that I would considering obnoxious was that puzzle in Chapter 5 where the solution was to give apples to each of the 4 heroes revealing a Red Globe needed to open the door that one was really stupid.

Funny the amount of positive reviews this game has garnered. This game should only be recommended to those who forego story/dialogue for gameplay.
I like this review, but I think your failure to mention the weaknesses of the textual dialogue and the way the story is presented is a problem. You did mention it briefly, but you overlooked it to shower the combat and progression systems with praise.
I think if you're a fan of anime type storylines and dialogue like @Maddmike described then this game won't be a problem for you. For me, I'm not a fan of this type of story and it was so awful I had to drop the game midway because of it. If it was a one off thing then I can understand it as a lewd joke or fanservice, but the entire game is filled with sexual innuendos and cringe storytelling. I'm all for ecchi and sex jokes in the proper context, but when a game is trying to be serious and present the story as such, I do not want the entire game to constantly barrage me with how pretty and sexy the characters are or how a character will "stuff her used panties in my mouth".
All in all your review was great, but I do think you should've highlighted the negatives of the story and dialogue more... especially when you yourself said that you didn't like how the story was presented and the dialogue. This would be a selling point for some people, especially people like me.

    • @Maddmike
      @Maddmike  Год назад +1

This is completely fair feedback, and I appreciate it.
It's funny you bring this up, as I was writing this review I was mentally grappling with this exact problem and trying to solicit advice from my friends... the conversation went something like this:
"Guys... the gameplay in this game is completely amazing and I'm hooked for hours on end, but the story might be the worst stories I've ever consumed across any medium ever, how do I position that in the review?"
I think I sort of landed on a 'be transparent up front that the story is terrible, but spend commit most of the script real estate talking about the stuff that's actually compelling.'
Not a perfect formula... and in hindsight I may have let the game 'get away' with it's story more than I should have.
I'm always trying to find the right balance of sharing what I dislike about a game without turning it into a whine fest; I appreciate that it feels like I may have overcorrected in this particular area, and I'll keep that in mind for the next game where it's peaks and valleys have such a wide gap.
