The African Great Green Wall was proposed when I was first in college, which means it predates China's plan. The difference is that the African plan sputtered along with too-small efforts and no coordination for decades, whereas when China decided to do it they went massive and organized. Thus Africa is now playing catch-up.

Comparing the size of the Sahara desert to the deserts of china is ridiculous not to mention this is multiple countries across the entirety of the African continent to that of China which is one country. What china has accomplished is truly incredible but that does not diminish the work that has been done in Africa. There is much more complexity between a dessert that was once lush green lands a few decades ago to an ancient desert that has existed for thousands of years u sound ignorant.

Studies show to create precipitation, the trees must be continuous, from the ocean which supplies water to clouds which fall on the trees, for the rain to fall over the newly extended forests. Breaks in the canopy will halt the cooling effect which trees create, and instead heat the air and evaporate the clouds. Trees create rain only if the clouds don't get heated to evaporation on the way inland.

China's best strategy at this juncture might be to go back to currently successful monocrop areas, and implement "chop & drop" on 10% to 30% of those plants, to turn into compost for several new varieties of trees, shrubs, and grasses. Re-trench successful areas and try to extend that success into areas that are failing.

Here in Australia, where Mollison came from there are a few dozen small Permaculture farms, but no Australian Government or State Government has taken on the greening of entire Deserts which is crazy as Australia is the driest continent on earth, Australia has a huge agricultural base and Australia is comparatively empty, We just lack Politicians with any brains or long term thinking capabilities. These concerns are valid. Water cycle changes must be sustainable, and monocultures present are too risky even where a cost advantage exists (Eucalyptus etc.)
Groundwater preservation & recharging can be managed via bund and other rainy season strategies. Cultivating mixed native grass & forb savanna can retain water at surface level. And rotational livestock grazing is the catalyst for the success of these techniques. When we apply all available lessons learned and keep working hard at mass scale good things are happening.

Africa's green wall initiatives can only succeed if it can control its population. Either it stops growing its population and maintains its current level or reduce its population to a certain level.

China's population peaked in 2022 at 1.42 billion. It declined in 2023, projected to be 1.3 billion in 20 years. 2090, it is projected to drop to 800 million. This is all because of the low birth rates for the last 40 years.

unfortunately, this forest is a monoculture of coniferous trees that doesn't benefit the endemic fuana or flora and is practically an ecological desert itself.
