Both I guess, it became a cheap go to for TV channels and thus supplanted properly scripted programs which by comparison take too much money and effort to actually produce when you can just film a bunch of fucking retards fighting and copulating. Getting the drama out of that was easier than actually paying an actor to depict something.

See, my problem is the opposite. The issue I have with a lot of reality TV is that it takes real people and edits together footage to create "characters" out of them.
As a result, people are even less able to disassociate the person from the version of themselves portrayed on TV. And this really can tarnish the image of those real people or lead to social media harassment, which can be damaging to people suddenly launched into this infamy.
Some argue that "this is what they sign up for" but I don't think a lot of people quite recognise the full ramifications that can come from being portrayed in a certain light on television.

Reality shows also rely on a lot of toxicity that risks crossing the line between drama and abuse. For example, the misogyny and sexual assault in below deck or the dodgy work conditions the children faced on dance moms.

I’d say I hate really shows generally but I will admit I have a huge soft spot for the UK Apprentice. It’s formulaic but we’ll crafted for exactly what it is. Even if the tasks are the same every year watching the produces make that years cast look as stupid as possible in the execution will always be entertaining We don’t have to put up with the contestants endless personal dramas on screen (as the show has evolved into the social media age it’s just come out on Twitter after airing. )

I admit watching one single series of Big Brother way back in 2006 (Im Australian so this was OZ BB) and one series was enough, it served a purpose at the time I think and this is sad to admit but it was like having a group of friends without the pain of actually having to sociaise with them and I was feeling lonely at the time so it filled a need, but the next year in 2007 I didnt want to go on the ride again, once was enough. I think the problem with reality T V apart from the fact its not really reality at all is that it gives airtime to people that I watch Tv to avoid. TV should be about escapism, if I want to see real life people I can um, go out and see them in real life? Its also taking airtime away from properly scripted shows, taking work away from actors, writers, producers and all the people who make proper entertainment and filling it with people who do not deserve any attention.

It's easy to forget that the 1st UK series of Big Brother was 5 x 30mins per week. Since it was filmed 24/7 with multiple cameras, people who were chosen to be confrontational, crammed into a house where they couldn't escape, of course they had plenty of conflict to fill the time. 'Modern' reality TV has fewer cameras, filming only some of the time, with people who know when the cameras aren't there, so you are going to get boring conversations. However as long as people watch it, TV companies will make it... This week on "Watching Paint Dry" Samantha has applied some crackle glaze to a French dresser...

Can we really get better reality tv than Dead Set?
Also, mad question but have you ever seen Year of the Sex Olympics? It's a British dystopian teleplay from the 60s where pornography is easily available in order to keep the populations birth rates down because we're becoming overcrowded... but the effect is wearing off. Some producer then makes up a series where a bunch of normal people are stuck on an island and people tune in to watch them.... Has a twist ending so I don't want to spoil it, but Nigel Kneale was PROBABLY more cynical than all of us combined because this was an idea he had in the 60s

not a fan of all the specialty cable channels, or the regular ones, having some reality show either exploiting human lives, or bragging about how much better a celebrity's life is than yours. Turn to A&E, there's a reality show. Turn to TLC, reality show. Turn to MTV, _definitely_ a reality show. Even Cartoon Network got some reality shows. In the 90s, you wanted music, you go to MTV, you wanted movies, you go to any movie channel. I hated seeing reality tv be so common in my 20s after seeing a wealth of top notch programming in my teens. I think the biggest factor is over-abundance, but there's also the humans-suffering-for-entertainment factor as well. With the millennium being as it was with war and sexism and pretty much a complete reversal of what was normal back then, and all these depressing things happening in the news every single day it seems... yeah, the humans-suffering part adds onto it.
And many people in the 90s hated The Real World and Road Rules anyway, when they just wanted more music. So seeing reality tv everywhere was frustrating.

The issue is, it’s just background noise, it’s something you throw on whilst scrolling through Twitter. It’s not meant to have any real meat, it’s more like an expensive Kabab, yeah it looks nice, but it’s probably made out of styrofoam and tastes like dishwater, but people go because it looks nice.
Do you remember in that one Doctor who episode (curse of the black spot) where Amy goes “someone who have everything and look nice, can be as dull as a prick when it comes to personality, but if Rory’s personality was drawn on his face he would be the most handsome person ever” (something like that) basically what I am saying is sometimes if something looks nice doesn’t mean it always is, sometimes if you look at something conventionally unattractive you may find something a bit more interesting. But audiences can’t let go of pretty people having the sex.
Also most of it is all staged and if you look at it like that, a drama, you can see it doesn’t hold up well as a well directed/acted/ edited drama. It’s all fake you know

Some of these are just mindless noise. Shitty, but don't bother me. But Gordon Ramsay, even though I know his show is fake, makes me furious. All he does is scream, all the restaurant owners do is scream, the music is acting like making a souffle is on level with disarming a small nuclear device. I get turning your mind off and watching dull people chit chat. But why people enjoy hearing a man-child scream at someone who will then scream at him, until they cry and fix everything in the last two minutes just boggles the mind

Two minutes of content in an hour of footage? As an American who doesn't get sports, that sounds like football. American football. It seems to be almost entirely people standing around. You might see that there's something like 30 seconds left in the game, but that's a lie -- that 30 seconds is chopped up into tiny pieces and it's stretched into 30 minutes of mostly boring, pointless idling.
