The analysis starts at 1:46. I sort of rambled a bit more than usual at the beginning. Just wanted to mention that I have given thought to providing more theories on him, but just stuck to a more generalized analysis so it’d go up quicker. I also just ended up having a lot more to say about him without theory building than I had originally thought. Next video will probably be the Kill/Cure one I mentioned in the video! One thing I really appreciated about Rantaro is how he was explicitly *not* a playboy. Even his Love Hotel event was purely platonic. There aren't many characters I can safely headcanon as aromantic/asexual. (Even his design fits the aro flag ;))

Excellent analysis~ To me, Rantaro is portrayed as an overprotective big brother, perhaps this is stemmed from losing his sisters. There are several examples that point to this: 1) He stopped Ryoma from sacrificing himself. 2) Despite being skeptical about the clue in the survivor pad, he chose to act upon it when everyone was cornered. 3) In his love hotel scene, he told Shuichi that he wants to protect him. 4) He is implied to have chosen to sacrifice himself in the last killing game in order to let others win, that is how he became the Ultimate Survivor. This, in my opinion, is the reason why he acted alone, carrying the burden by himself (which is implied in the love hotel scene and his free time event). Ultimately, it was his overprotective nature that caused his downfall. Last but not least, this is just my own speculation, the reason why Rantaro wants to join the killing game is to end the killing game. He mentioned in his video that if "he" was smart, he would use it to end the killing game.
There's a theory that the 12 sisters are actually representing the 12 that died from the last game - since it came down to the final 4 in v3, its likely a similar outcome happened in v2 where Rantaro sacrificed himself like Maki intended to do, another became the Mastermind/mole in the next game (Tsumugi/K1-b0) and then two were saved and let go (Shuichi/Himiko & 2 v2 students). So the 12 sisters were Rantaros dead v2 classmates from his memory... maybe xD
Yeah, I remember that Tsumugi said that Flashback Lights can only Insert and Override memories, and anything different from the base personality (like talent) is applied like a placebo effect. So it would make sense that "lost his 12 sisters" would be a logical synthesis when a "lost his sister" memory is overlaid with a "12 people you cared about were murdered" one.

I do like Rantaro's design and character, we really don't see that much from him except for his calm personality. I really HOPE we get a prequel about Rantaro's first killing game experience to learn more about him, that is if he still had the same personality as he had in the 53rd killing game but more than likely not because he was the Ultimate Adventurer. I'd like to see more from Tsumugi in the previous killing game too if there was an actual prequel. Gotta keep my fingers crossed 🤞. I know Kodaka said he didn't want to drag on the series but there is still so many questions that haven't been answered yet, I'm just dying for another game 😣
What Kodaka said was that he didn't want the series to define him,or for himto define the entire franchise. The way I see it, he created this game, which can be either the end of the franchise, or a new start. And it's upto Spike Chunsoft and whomever picks up the franchise to determine where it's going next. His precise words where something like "I want to look back and proudly say 'I worked on this series'"
I can imagine a killing game where Rantaro is one of the main characters. His final sacrifice letting the last survivors leave, their fates a mystery. Then in his final scene in Danganronpa 52, he sits on a chair. “If your watching this..”
I want a DR game where we play as a cool dude who choses to sacrifice himself in orden to let his waifu scape. But Monokuma finds out and gets mad, so she gets capture and punished. We later get a post game scene where both get their faces surgically modified, turning them into Rantaro and Tsumugi. The game wouldn't be revealed to be DR52 until you finished it.
The only reason I'm not that into the idea of a prequel for Rantaro is because we already know he'd be the only survivor of the 52nd killing game. So it takes the fun of guessing who will survive out of it.
I think that Rantaro is the real hero of V3's story arc. What I mean by this is that V3 is at the end of it's timeline and the new games will likely be prequels to it. One of the prequels I think will be the one that Rantaro partook in and survived, that game will have him as the protagonist. The other game I think will be the Ultra Despair Girls 2 V3 promoted with Kaede's sister mentioned in V3 as the protagonist of that game. Kodaka doesn't give his characters ahoges if they're not important. Evidence supporting this is Rantaro's mysterious past ie the things he says in his Free time events, he talks alot about how he survived a previous killing game and his adventures. All this talk about his past points to that he's experienced a killing game before. Basically my theory is that this new storyline is really about Rantaro similar to how the Hopes Peak arc revolves around Makoto.
Also, I HOPE for the Prequel one being true. Because if you think about it, he joined a killing game previously, and If he views himself as 'smart', that is most likely a game protagonist view. But this is a theory. I have a lots of theories but I am lazy.
The 12 sisters thing, much like the Reptite thing with Gonta and the Eaten by a Whale thing with Kaito, I saw them as basically the game pointing out that the backgrounds are fake. For Gonta and Kaito its more because the two characters are so truthful that it seems weird for them to lie, but with Rantaro, since you already know that his background is fake by the time you can hang out with him, the 12 sisters thing acts like a bait and switch, as his well written backstory can make you feel sorry for him, but then they add the last detail to remind you his backstory is fake. Just how I saw it though.
But then they would have added something to Kaede's which they didn't. Gonta's storyline was bogus fromthe start since he was taken care of by wolves and if you know anything about animals you would know Japanese wolves have been extinct in Japan for at least a hundred years (1905 was the last confirmed sighting in fact). The twelve sisters thing,while making a little of a gag of a rather sad situation, is something that's not entirely alien to danganronpa. We've seen much stranger things in the series. Def nothing on the level of the Reptite stories of Gonta, or Kaito's stupid tall tales (which I think we were always supposed to believe were false as Kaito NEVER tells you anything truthful about himself). Basically, I wouldn't find it odd for him to actually have twelve sisters. Stupid yes, unrealistic by danganronpa standards? Nah. This is a series where giant teddy bears destroyed the world you know. And where ghost posession was confirmed as real.
The point still stands that even his "believable" lie was full of holes. That's what I meant. Having twelve sisters is just weirdly stupid but nothing that goes "nah, that isn't true".
Yeah, if it were told to me before the reveal that all the backstories are fake then I would have found it dumb but still take it at face value. But you can only hang out with Rantaro as Shuichi after you already know its fake, so having the ridiculous factor so suddenly contrast such a grounded story right at the end reminded me it was fake.
I just realized, Rantaro's backstory is actually pretty traumatizing, constantly losing more and more of the people you love but never wanting to give up on finding them or else you would never forgive yourself. This would cause a lot of issues
One thing that I thought was interesting about Rantaro was his Love Hotel. It described how his student, which I'm guessing represented a sister or younger sibling, and him were talking about how Rantaro is going to leave. What interested me was how Rantaro mentioned that he might die. Since I already knew about the dangers of his traveling to fins his sisters, I didn't think much of it. Before I realized that he could have been talking about his first killing game. Maybe in his actual life he had younger siblings, which was the inspiration for his fabricated backstory and talent. He could of told his younger siblings that he was joining the killing game and his deepest desire was seeing them again. (I know this really doesn't work because the rest of the cast didn't remember their previous lives, but I was just thinking about how the brainwashing process for the second time could have brought unconscious memories to the forefront, without Rantaro actually understanding what they mean)

I feel like they did the best out of a first victim character they could do. What I'd love to see is some kind of Danganronpa 52 where Amami and (maybe) Shirogane appear. I'd imagine Amami as either a really new concept of protagonist (distrusting and a little more harsh than the others) or in the Komaeda/Ouma griefer role. You could do a lot with just the plot that he has lost his memories from the previous killing game. I'm not sure how they would handle Danganronpa 52 when the player knows from the beginning that it's all fictional and we are basically spoiled from the beginning. In the final chapter it's stated that Amami sacrified himself and play the next killing game to grant 2 people the right to go to the outside world. I'm really interested in who these characters are and how Amami came to the conclusion to sacrifice himself. When I played the game, I was already prepared to see him die although he is such a good character with the potential to live longer and many people don't think so but I think he fits the V3 cast so well like almost no other character.
They should make a manga for him. Also it actually makes me sad that he couldn’t live on for at least 1 trial... He could’ve made the game way more interesting in boring moments.

@@slowyourroll1146 or they can have V3 DLC called V3PRE where it’s the last 2 trials of V2 since Rantaro got wiped out and forgot memories of the first 4 trials and you get to meet like 5 or 6 new characters. A full game would be too much since you know the ending and it wouldn’t stand well on its own.

I love Rantaro so much I wish he lived longer :(. I felt like he had a lot of potential to be an amazing character and how his character was introduced it felt like he was meant to live longer. RIP to my best boy.
!! Chapter 6 Spoilers !! I think it’s a nice touch that proves that he is the Ultimate Survivor. Technically Rantaro was supposed to die from Kaede but he didn’t actually die from it so be survived that attack but Tsumugi finished it off. I’m confident that if it was another stydent they would have died from Kaede right away.
this really describes Rantaro, i really like Rantaro, because he is such a nice careful person that always tries his best. and he takes everything the easy way, he doesn't panic in serious situations. and i don't find it surprising that he is The Ultimate Adventurer. i overall really like him, even though he didn't get a chance to show all of this in the main story.....

On the wiki it says that he and another student supposedly gave their lives for hope to survive, but Rantaro's punishment ended up being in DRV3. I honestly would like DRV2 just so we could see what happened during that season and have Rantaro be the protag. Before I knew this I thought he ended up killing someone to save his sisters and "won" that season (which sounds cooler tbh).
Ironically rantaro opened up to kaede and shuichi, the only other mastermind hunters, he could have been warned about the cameras and prove to them that there is indeed a mastermind in the school. I can’t help but imagine what it would be like with the trio trying to expose the truth. It could have even ended before case 5.
I feel like you do a great job at spreading light onto characters I don't like as much as the rest of the cast (ie Hiyoko and Kazuichi). Because of this I would like an Angie analysis (if you want to do one I don't want to force you :/ ). I can tell there is more to her character but I still can't tell what and she seems kinda grating to me idk

Could you do an Angie Yonaga analysis ? I feel like a lot of people DOESN'T understand her true intention who were GOOD. First of all, her destroying the flashback light was one of the most clever act in the game, considering it was all lies and bad stuff. When you do her FTE, you realise she's quite lonely in reality, and that she doesn't realise she annoys everyone. Her student council too started from a good intention. If you do one, it would be cool ^^ The fandom needs to understand her better just like Hiyoko.
Thank you for making this video! I believe that the more detailed the analysis, the more enjoyable it is, but you should do the videos at your preference. As long as you differentiate what's the data you've collected and what's your personal analysis, I think the comprehensive approach isn't bad at all. Either way, I'll continue to watch and continue to support the channel. =) I'd love to see a Gonta or Sayaka analysis.
I don't dislike the twelve sisters twist personally. I myself have quite a lot of siblings, I'm the oldest sister amongst 7(step, half and full blooded) and it really can be difficult for parents and older siblings to watch over so many younger ones. Also if Rantaro's family is as renowned as he states, it is very possible that his family was a target for people wanting to take hostages for money, especially IF the most tragic event in human history still follows the other games into V3(Hopefully this may be explained in later entries). Though if this is the case, worse may actually have happened. It could be possible that all 12 of his siblings were kidnapped around the same time too. The parallels between Kaede and Rantaro are definitely there upon re watching V3. Considering that it is her POV, we don't truly get to see what our antagonists are up too(for Kaede it was Rantaro, for Shuichi it was Kokichi) so I like to think that behind the scenes Rantaro and Kokichi had somewhat of a similar thing going for them as our protagonists did. Kokichi DID start collecting murder evidence after Ch.1 as seen in his room, though I don't know why he would go through the trouble of taking Rantaro's effigy when Ryoma's would have been much less effort to drag back. Unless they were ,of course, connected somehow. I'd like to think that they were looking for as many secrets as possible, or something along those lines in Ch.1. Both of our antagonist DO hide behind a "mask" in this game. I think that Kokichi knew that he was the antagonist ever since he started writing on the horse a rock way back in ch.2, it is wierd that the answer to the puzzle in Rantaro's lab actually connects back to Kokichi's Birth Sign for some reason(he's the only Gemini in this cast, also with his name as well translating to prince horse or something along those lines). He may have known even before that, in his introduction he called himself an "evil supreme leader" after all. I find it a major missed opportunity that Shuichi never decided to do his own investigations on Kokichi to see where he went when he went missing almost constantly. I think that Kokichi wanted to be caught, and I know the love hotel scenes aren't canon, but between chapters 2-4 Kokichi really did seem to want to grab Shuichi's attention, even to an aggressive and straight up pissed off point in Ch.4s trial. Kokichi also laid on that Shuichi is going to "save everyone" pretty thickly, and that they are in a "game", not a killing game, in that chapter too. He made sure that he was not going to be seen as the hero right then and there. It's too bad that we didn't get a chapter in this game like with Komaeda in DR2, that would have definitely helped with clearing some theories as to what the hell went through Kokichi's head in this game. Rantaro's POV probably would have been much more paranoid induced then what he was letting on considering the information that he was allowed, at this point I actually do feel bad for the guy, Kaede's POV really does make a first time viewer see him negatively(not that she's a bad protagonist or anything). I could be wrong on some of my points here though if anyone wants to add to these. It is mostly speculation.

Pretty good video. I never really thought much of the side mode mentioned in the video since I mostly care about the main plot, but now I realize certain developments that I never really knew about until I look them up for myself. I just don't do them since that's a real time investment. Maybe someday I'll actually get around to doing this side stuff for all the games. Anyway, with what you mentioned in the video, it kind of makes me think Rantaro was the only character who had a "legit" talent considering he knew a lot more than he let on in the main plot, and of course his lab had all sorts of maps, a compass, and even a ship in a bottle. Might as well be the "Ultimate Pirate". Of course I don't really have definitive proof that what I said is completely legit as I'm just going by logical conclusions I can deduct from what's said in the game and what's said in this video. Those are my two cents on the matter though. I agree with you 100% that when I think if V3, I think of Rantaro. He's not one who immediately comes to mind in comparison to characters like Shuichi, Kokichi, Maki, etc., but dammit is he so interesting. His heir of mystery is what makes him so cool to me. On one hand I want to know the truth of his past, but on the other hand that sense of mystery would be ruined. It's a double-edged sword, but I think that could best be described about V3, or maybe even the whole series regarding character depth and character deaths. It's pretty phenomenal. Oh and fun fact for all you annie may fans out there and this almost completely unrelated to the video: Hikaru Midorikawa, who's Rantaro's seiyuu/voice actor you might be familiar with. In Dragon Ball Z he's the voice of Android 16 and the current voice of Tien Shinhan due to his original seiyuu Hirotaka Suzuoki passing away in 2006. He didn't start voicing Tien until the game DB: Raging Blast in 2009. Midorikawa in the west is probably most well known for being the Japanese voice of the character Marth, from Fire Emblem. While there was a Fire Emblem OVA that existed and was dubbed in English, you more than likely heard of Marth in the Super Smash Bros. series starting with Melee, along with his companion Roy, who's game didn't even come out at the time of Melee's release. In fact the Fire Emblem series was Japan only at the time and we didn't start getting games for the series until 2003. The series didn't really start picking up in the west until Awakening got localized in 2013 and suddenly the series has started to become an important IP for Nintendo. When most people think of the series they'll more than likely think of Marth, since he's the first Lord in the series ever, and of course he's very popular in the Smash community. He did finally get an English voice thanks to Yuri Lowenthal (who I think is pretty good), but Midorikawa's performance of the character is definitely the one that sticks with people the most. (side note: Roy is voiced by Jun Fukuyama, the JP voice of the one and only Joker/P5MC/Ren Amamiya. In English it's Xander Mobus, who was the announcer for Super Smash Bros. for 3DS/Wii U, and now Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, making him the first announcer to stay for another game in the series. He does both English and Japanese names/pronunciations for certain characters.)

Just wanted to mention that I have given thought to providing more theories on him, but just stuck to a more generalized analysis so it’d go up quicker. One thing I really appreciated about Rantaro is how he was explicitly *not* a playboy. Even his Love Hotel event was purely platonic. There aren't many characters I can safely headcanon as aromantic/asexual. (Even his design fits the aro flag ;))

To me, Rantaro is portrayed as an overprotective big brother, perhaps this is stemmed from losing his sisters. There are several examples that point to this:
1) He stopped Ryoma from sacrificing himself.
2) Despite being skeptical about the clue in the survivor pad, he chose to act upon it when everyone was cornered.
3) In his love hotel scene, he told Shuichi that he wants to protect him.
4) He is implied to have chosen to sacrifice himself in the last killing game in order to let others win, that is how he became the Ultimate Survivor.
This, in my opinion, is the reason why he acted alone, carrying the burden by himself (which is implied in the love hotel scene and his free time event). Ultimately, it was his overprotective nature that caused his downfall.
Last but not least, this is just my own speculation, the reason why Rantaro wants to join the killing game is to end the killing game. He mentioned in his video that if "he" was smart, he would use it to end the killing game.

There's a theory that the 12 sisters are actually representing the 12 that died from the last game - since it came down to the final 4 in v3, its likely a similar outcome happened in v2 where Rantaro sacrificed himself like Maki intended to do, another became the Mastermind/mole in the next game (Tsumugi/K1-b0) and then two were saved and let go (Shuichi/Himiko & 2 v2 students). So the 12 sisters were Rantaros dead v2 classmates from his memory... maybe xD

Yeah, I remember that Tsumugi said that Flashback Lights can only Insert and Override memories, and anything different from the base personality (like talent) is applied like a placebo effect. So it would make sense that "lost his 12 sisters" would be a logical synthesis when a "lost his sister" memory is overlaid with a "12 people you cared about were murdered" one.

I do like Rantaro's design and character, we really don't see that much from him except for his calm personality. I really HOPE we get a prequel about Rantaro's first killing game experience to learn more about him, that is if he still had the same personality as he had in the 53rd killing game but more than likely not because he was the Ultimate Adventurer. I'd like to see more from Tsumugi in the previous killing game too if there was an actual prequel. Gotta keep my fingers crossed 🤞. I know Kodaka said he didn't want to drag on the series but there is still so many questions that haven't been answered yet, I'm just dying for another game 😣
What Kodaka said was that he didn't want the series to define him,or for himto define the entire franchise. The way I see it, he created this game, which can be either the end of the franchise, or a new start. And it's upto Spike Chunsoft and whomever picks up the franchise to determine where it's going next.

the thing is though, if they were to make this prequel, it would immediately spoil v3. So it's between a rock and a hard place.
I can imagine a killing game where Rantaro is one of the main characters. His final sacrifice letting the last survivors leave, their fates a mystery.
Then in his final scene in Danganronpa 52, he sits on a chair. “If your watching this..”
I want a DR game where we play as a cool dude who choses to sacrifice himself in orden to let his waifu scape. But Monokuma finds out and gets mad, so she gets capture and punished. We later get a post game scene where both get their faces surgically modified, turning them into Rantaro and Tsumugi. The game wouldn't be revealed to be DR52 until you finished it.
The only reason I'm not that into the idea of a prequel for Rantaro is because we already know he'd be the only survivor of the 52nd killing game. So it takes the fun of guessing who will survive out of it.
I think that Rantaro is the real hero of V3's story arc. What I mean by this is that V3 is at the end of it's timeline and the new games will likely be prequels to it. One of the prequels I think will be the one that Rantaro partook in and survived, that game will have him as the protagonist. The other game I think will be the Ultra Despair Girls 2 V3 promoted with Kaede's sister mentioned in V3 as the protagonist of that game. Kodaka doesn't give his characters ahoges if they're not important. Evidence supporting this is Rantaro's mysterious past ie the things he says in his Free time events, he talks alot about how he survived a previous killing game and his adventures. All this talk about his past points to that he's experienced a killing game before. Basically my theory is that this new storyline is really about Rantaro similar to how the Hopes Peak arc revolves around Makoto.

The 12 sisters thing, much like the Reptite thing with Gonta and the Eaten by a Whale thing with Kaito, I saw them as basically the game pointing out that the backgrounds are fake. For Gonta and Kaito its more because the two characters are so truthful that it seems weird for them to lie, but with Rantaro, since you already know that his background is fake by the time you can hang out with him, the 12 sisters thing acts like a bait and switch, as his well written backstory can make you feel sorry for him, but then they add the last detail to remind you his backstory is fake. Just how I saw it though.
But then they would have added something to Kaede's which they didn't. Gonta's storyline was bogus fromthe start since he was taken care of by wolves and if you know anything about animals you would know Japanese wolves have been extinct in Japan for at least a hundred years (1905 was the last confirmed sighting in fact).
The twelve sisters thing,while making a little of a gag of a rather sad situation, is something that's not entirely alien to danganronpa. We've seen much stranger things in the series. Def nothing on the level of the Reptite stories of Gonta, or Kaito's stupid tall tales (which I think we were always supposed to believe were false as Kaito NEVER tells you anything truthful about himself). Basically, I wouldn't find it odd for him to actually have twelve sisters. Stupid yes, unrealistic by danganronpa standards? Nah. This is a series where giant teddy bears destroyed the world you know. And where ghost posession was confirmed as real.

Yeah, if it were told to me before the reveal that all the backstories are fake then I would have found it dumb but still take it at face value. But you can only hang out with Rantaro as Shuichi after you already know its fake, so having the ridiculous factor so suddenly contrast such a grounded story right at the end reminded me it was fake.

One thing that I thought was interesting about Rantaro was his Love Hotel.
It described how his student, which I'm guessing represented a sister or younger sibling, and him were talking about how Rantaro is going to leave. What interested me was how Rantaro mentioned that he might die. Since I already knew about the dangers of his traveling to fins his sisters, I didn't think much of it. Before I realized that he could have been talking about his first killing game. Maybe in his actual life he had younger siblings, which was the inspiration for his fabricated backstory and talent. He could of told his younger siblings that he was joining the killing game and his deepest desire was seeing them again.
(I know this really doesn't work because the rest of the cast didn't remember their previous lives, but I was just thinking about how the brainwashing process for the second time could have brought unconscious memories to the forefront, without Rantaro actually understanding what they mean)

I feel like they did the best out of a first victim character they could do. What I'd love to see is some kind of Danganronpa 52 where Amami and (maybe) Shirogane appear. I'd imagine Amami as either a really new concept of protagonist (distrusting and a little more harsh than the others) or in the Komaeda/Ouma griefer role. You could do a lot with just the plot that he has lost his memories from the previous killing game. I'm not sure how they would handle Danganronpa 52 when the player knows from the beginning that it's all fictional and we are basically spoiled from the beginning. In the final chapter it's stated that Amami sacrified himself and play the next killing game to grant 2 people the right to go to the outside world. I'm really interested in who these characters are and how Amami came to the conclusion to sacrifice himself. When I played the game, I was already prepared to see him die although he is such a good character with the potential to live longer and many people don't think so but I think he fits the V3 cast so well like almost no other character.

I think it’s a nice touch that proves that he is the Ultimate Survivor. Technically Rantaro was supposed to die from Kaede but he didn’t actually die from it so be survived that attack but Tsumugi finished it off. I’m confident that if it was another stydent they would have died from Kaede right away.

Ironically rantaro opened up to kaede and shuichi, the only other mastermind hunters, he could have been warned about the cameras and prove to them that there is indeed a mastermind in the school. I can’t help but imagine what it would be like with the trio trying to expose the truth. It could have even ended before case 5.
I feel like you do a great job at spreading light onto characters I don't like as much as the rest of the cast (ie Hiyoko and Kazuichi). Because of this I would like an Angie analysis (if you want to do one I don't want to force you :/ ). I can tell there is more to her character but I still can't tell what and she seems kinda grating to me idk

As long as you differentiate what's the data you've collected and what's your personal analysis, I think the comprehensive approach isn't bad at all. I don't dislike the twelve sisters twist personally. I myself have quite a lot of siblings, I'm the oldest sister amongst 7(step, half and full blooded) and it really can be difficult for parents and older siblings to watch over so many younger ones.
Also if Rantaro's family is as renowned as he states, it is very possible that his family was a target for people wanting to take hostages for money, especially IF the most tragic event in human history still follows the other games into V3(Hopefully this may be explained in later entries). Though if this is the case, worse may actually have happened. It could be possible that all 12 of his siblings were kidnapped around the same time too.
The parallels between Kaede and Rantaro are definitely there upon re watching V3. Considering that it is her POV, we don't truly get to see what our antagonists are up too(for Kaede it was Rantaro, for Shuichi it was Kokichi) so I like to think that behind the scenes Rantaro and Kokichi had somewhat of a similar thing going for them as our protagonists did. Kokichi DID start collecting murder evidence after Ch.1 as seen in his room, though I don't know why he would go through the trouble of taking Rantaro's effigy when Ryoma's would have been much less effort to drag back. Unless they were ,of course, connected somehow. I'd like to think that they were looking for as many secrets as possible, or something along those lines in Ch.1. Both of our antagonist DO hide behind a "mask" in this game.
I think that Kokichi knew that he was the antagonist ever since he started writing on the horse a rock way back in ch.2, it is wierd that the answer to the puzzle in Rantaro's lab actually connects back to Kokichi's Birth Sign for some reason(he's the only Gemini in this cast, also with his name as well translating to prince horse or something along those lines). He may have known even before that, in his introduction he called himself an "evil supreme leader" after all.
I find it a major missed opportunity that Shuichi never decided to do his own investigations on Kokichi to see where he went when he went missing almost constantly. I think that Kokichi wanted to be caught, and I know the love hotel scenes aren't canon, but between chapters 2-4 Kokichi really did seem to want to grab Shuichi's attention, even to an aggressive and straight up pissed off point in Ch.4s trial. Kokichi also laid on that Shuichi is going to "save everyone" pretty thickly, and that they are in a "game", not a killing game, in that chapter too. He made sure that he was not going to be seen as the hero right then and there.
It's too bad that we didn't get a chapter in this game like with Komaeda in DR2, that would have definitely helped with clearing some theories as to what the hell went through Kokichi's head in this game. Rantaro's POV probably would have been much more paranoid induced then what he was letting on considering the information that he was allowed, at this point I actually do feel bad for the guy, Kaede's POV really does make a first time viewer see him negatively(not that she's a bad protagonist or anything).
I could be wrong on some of my points here though if anyone wants to add to these. It is mostly speculation.

Pretty good video. I never really thought much of the side mode mentioned in the video since I mostly care about the main plot, but now I realize certain developments that I never really knew about until I look them up for myself. I just don't do them since that's a real time investment. Maybe someday I'll actually get around to doing this side stuff for all the games.
Anyway, with what you mentioned in the video, it kind of makes me think Rantaro was the only character who had a "legit" talent considering he knew a lot more than he let on in the main plot, and of course his lab had all sorts of maps, a compass, and even a ship in a bottle. Might as well be the "Ultimate Pirate". Of course I don't really have definitive proof that what I said is completely legit as I'm just going by logical conclusions I can deduct from what's said in the game and what's said in this video. Those are my two cents on the matter though.
I agree with you 100% that when I think if V3, I think of Rantaro. He's not one who immediately comes to mind in comparison to characters like Shuichi, Kokichi, Maki, etc., but dammit is he so interesting. His heir of mystery is what makes him so cool to me. On one hand I want to know the truth of his past, but on the other hand that sense of mystery would be ruined. It's a double-edged sword, but I think that could best be described about V3, or maybe even the whole series regarding character depth and character deaths. It's pretty phenomenal.
Oh and fun fact for all you annie may fans out there and this almost completely unrelated to the video: Hikaru Midorikawa, who's Rantaro's seiyuu/voice actor you might be familiar with. In Dragon Ball Z he's the voice of Android 16 and the current voice of Tien Shinhan due to his original seiyuu Hirotaka Suzuoki passing away in 2006. He didn't start voicing Tien until the game DB: Raging Blast in 2009. Midorikawa in the west is probably most well known for being the Japanese voice of the character Marth, from Fire Emblem. While there was a Fire Emblem OVA that existed and was dubbed in English, you more than likely heard of Marth in the Super Smash Bros. series starting with Melee, along with his companion Roy, who's game didn't even come out at the time of Melee's release. In fact the Fire Emblem series was Japan only at the time and we didn't start getting games for the series until 2003. The series didn't really start picking up in the west until Awakening got localized in 2013 and suddenly the series has started to become an important IP for Nintendo. When most people think of the series they'll more than likely think of Marth, since he's the first Lord in the series ever, and of course he's very popular in the Smash community. He did finally get an English voice thanks to Yuri Lowenthal (who I think is pretty good), but Midorikawa's performance of the character is definitely the one that sticks with people the most.
(side note: Roy is voiced by Jun Fukuyama, the JP voice of the one and only Joker/P5MC/Ren Amamiya. In English it's Xander Mobus, who was the announcer for Super Smash Bros. for 3DS/Wii U, and now Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, making him the first announcer to stay for another game in the series. He does both English and Japanese names/pronunciations for certain characters.)
