      @@Nicholas.Tsagkos They are several programs and tools to monitor what employees are doing, yeah.
      However, there are several issues with those programs and tools. First, they are not as accurate (or there are way around them) Second, there are some security and privacy concerns regarding those programs and tools outside of the workplace. Third, there are also some legal questions regarding those programs and tools outside of the workplace. Legal those monitoring tools are only supposed to be in the workplace, i.e. office but if you are working from home it blurry the line, (the question was raised during the pandemic but never answer to the best of my knowledge)
      Finally, while yeah, those programs and tools give you a level of control, it is not the same level of control as having butt in seats in the office. Using a school example, it is like the difference between a regular teacher and a substitute teacher. There is still an adult in the room, but one with much less authority.

Also, this idea of connecting better with co-workers and this whole teamwork thing is better in the office is also false, the majority of time is spent in useless meetings and socializing consists of just talking about work while at work or useless small talk, there is nothing connecting anyone in an office environment that positively impacts productivity, in fact, it can be the contrary, I’m far more productive working from home and the other benefit of working from home is it eliminates middle management which has been utterly useless for so long, if bosses are saying it’s time to come back to the office then they are people you don’t want to power for in the first place and at this point it should be an option, but not mandated.

    What does it matter to companies if their workers complete all their projects from home? Maybe, companies want to go back to the good ole days. When people slaved and worked late hours for free?
    Also, being physically present with a person doesn't equal connection. This is not an in person connection issue. What a crock of $#&@. Some ppl are married to people they hardly communicate with and yet they physically sleep in same bed every night. This isnt an in-person physical issue at all. Showing up physically doesnt always equal connection nor emotional intimacy at all.
    This is simply commercial landlords wanting to collect rent checks from companies. But, they cant because they all work from home now.

    I work for an employer who transitioned to remote work for much its operations during COVID and have kept the practice in place to a lesser extent in the past year. The problem that many of these remote workers made was thinking short-term. What happened? They fell in love with it. No longer want to return to the office or are begrudgingly coming back.
    I am for returning to the office. The cons outweigh the pros from an employee development and opportunity perspective. I understand that some employees are content with not moving up the corporate ladder but you can also not be upset by your low raises. You got to work from home... How much did you save doing that? Do these employees factor that in? No. Go on social media and you see these same coworkers went out more than ever. Terrible planning.
    I take the side of the employer on this one. Sure, it is great to roll out of bed 10 minutes before work or take your laptop/headset to the restroom but is that professional? Absolutely not. Work is not supposed to be convenient.

    • @Klako-ls6yt
      @Klako-ls6yt Год назад +7

      I'm on a hybrid schedule, and really, I don't see the point of being in the office. The only thing that really matters is whether or not work gets done, and my team gets it done regardless of where we work. As for the theoretical advantages of being in the office, they just don't materialize in practice. We still use Microsoft Teams for collaboration and meetings even when we're in the office. Most meetings aren't using the breakout rooms in the office. A lot of times, you have teams with members calling in from across multiple locations, so there's no point in using a meeting room when the meeting has to be done remotely anyway. As for the social aspect, the social stuff are distractions from the work. If my coworkers are having a side conversation about football, that probably ends up distracting me from my work. Also, my coworkers are I aren't really friends. We don't do things outside of work. I have actual friends outside of work for my social life.
      Then there are the noticeable disadvantages of in office work. The biggest one is in the form of health. When I'm in the office, I'm more likely to be sleep deprived, less likely to eat healthier, and less likely to get good enough exercise than when I work remotely. When I'm working remote, I have time and energy after work to cook and go to the gym. Office days are a lot harder for that. I'm more likely to simply grab something on the way home from work during the commute and spend the evening trying to relax and decompress after the day. I'm also probably less productive on my office days on account of sleep deprivation.

    I see these people whining about having to come back to work, like kids at the end of summer break, and it's silly. Structure has a positive effect on productivity. The on-site work setting provides structure, which actually makes people more productive. Lack of structure leads to laziness, in all of us, myself included. For example, when I went to college and had to go to classes, I learned quickly, because I had to show up where there were no temptations or distractions to break my focus. Also, being around other people, physically, is healthy for human beings. Last but not least, remote work fails the minute there's a power outage or disruption to the wifi signal.

      I believe productivity is also an individualized matter. I personally thrived since I was in high school in home studies, then online college(under grad plus graduate), now all the way into my remote career. We have to allow people to not only work smarter but have freedom to do what is best for them. There are many people like myself that actually produce and function better in their own environment. I actually have less distractions at home then an on-site office! I am also a millennial so I can acknowledge I have growing up with tech on my side to maneuver well in virtual environments. Our world is becoming more and more digital and there are some great opportunities to embrace with that!

      @@danielled23 I really do think there are some people who can handle managing their own time and can be effective workers. I think there are also people who can't. I think it's down to the matter of how people handle difficulty. I worked 6 years before I went to college, so I had the right mindset. Still, having both pressure and positive support from actual human beings improved how productive I was in school. If you need the money and value your job you will work. If you don't, you probably won't. I think every situation is unique. However, I do still think that employees should be made to come to work every week or so to check in with a live human being. Being GenX, I still believe there's much to gain from actually interacting in the real world with living, breathing human beings. LOL, maybe I'm old school. Whatever.

I can be around human beings outside of the office. And regardless of what they tell you, we are not a "family". Your points about your personal college experience shows your lack of perspective and experience. I work with software engineers and I assure you they are just as productive, even more so, in remote locations. Why do you think so many companies employ workers out of India, Europe, etc??
