- This is the fantastic opening theme music to the 1963 British/Yugoslavian Viking film, The Long Ships.
I do not own this music or anything else that has to do with the film or the novel by Frans Gunnar Bengtsson. I am just a fan who is sharing the wonderful music of this movie with other fans.
The theme song to this movie The Long Ships is stirring, superb, so memorable, and should be recognised more than it is. It has stayed with me over 30 years since I saw the movie. It's a classic.
Agreed 100 percent my friend.
Phenomenally powerful piece of music! Ne Plus Ultra (nothing can be added to improve it).
This theme lives rent free in my head.
I just bought the DVD of this movie ... I've seen this movie so many times. I remember this theme song as if I heard it yesterday ... it still gives me goosebumps.
Get the book. The film only covers about 19 pages of a 300 page book. Riproaring stuff.
I'm re-watching the film now. Some of it seems kind of silly now, but the theme song is great, and Richard Widmark is always good. I will always remember Russ Tamblyn doing a kip during the fight scene at the end.
Love the music
I was 7 or 8 when I saw the movie, The Long Ships. The theme still plays in my jukebox brain.
I was the same age and saw it in the drive in..and i always found it one of the most inspirational movie themes. It plays in my head during epic events.
same been in the memory lineup since I was 12 or 14... stirring piece
Me too big time, right along with Gunga Din and Jason and the Argonauts.
I first saw it as a child back in the sixties, I still can't forget it.
one of my fav movies
My father took me to see it when I was 11 years old. We liked it so much, we saw it twice! Great memories, great movie.
I've always loved this movie, The Long Ships. We just lost Sidney Poitier a few days ago. RIP sir, with love. And of course, we lost Richard Widmark in 2008. Two wonderful actors!
I thought I was the only one obsessed with this score. I'm also loooking for the piano instrumental that introduced me to this song.
Anne Macek here it is... ruclips.net/video/rH4YQfXfeHg/видео.html
just heard it. punch up what you just asked for.
I was very fortunate to have purchased this movie on DVD several years ago, and I love watching it often. From a night at the outdoor drive-in movies with my family in 1964, this quickly became, and still remains, my favorite movie of all time.
sadly the books is not like the movie
Nostalgia from a by gone age, movie scores just aren't the same anymore.
this and the theme tune from the Vikings are very evocative
no there not; why on earth would you want them to be? those were GREAT times for cinema & cinema music but like miles davis said you've GOT to push forward-don't stagnate. there are great doings in film soundtracks as we speak & of course they represent changing times & sensibilities. check out the opening strainds of "the girl with all the gifts"-more sonic architecture than music and QUITE exciting! or the the work of johan johansson for "sicario", EARLY john williams, the soundtrack for "get out", quincy jones' or miles' scores. we are blessed with an embarrassment of riches in the field of cinema down through the ages-don't be a cultural Luddite. don't be a jabberknowl; you're not one of those are you?
The film was based very loosely on the first part of the novel"The Long Ships"(English Title)by the Swedish author and historian Frans Bengtsson. The novel is marvelous and I would highly recommend it-I've gone through six paperback copies since I bought the first one in the sixties!
Great Book.Got my last copy from UK.Helps watching the Series.
sorry but I liked the movie better which is odd for me being a long time reader
Believe title was Red Orm
The movies of the 1960's and early 70's had the best musical scores and themes that were recurring thruout the entire movie. This is a great one, as was the theme to Man in the Wilderness and The Battle of the Bulge.
How about Goldfinger, Thunderball and You Only lie Twice, Alice in Wonderland by the maestros, John Barry; Jason and the Argonauts and Psycho, Bernard Herrman; The Time Machine, Russell Garcia?
And then Is Paris Burning and Battle of Britain and Where Eagles Dare and Taras Bulba.
And then throw in Bridge Too Far.
@@Mdebacle Don't think Battle of Britain had a recurring them laced thruout the movie. Lawrence of Arabia had a great one. Ice Station Zebra a concurrent theme in the score.
A great soundtrack to a very good film. Richard Widmark, one of his best films
great viking theme song- magneficent !!!
Brings back memories of the Million Dollar Movie on WOR Channel 9 in New York. Each week they would run the same movie twice a night for a week. The Long Ships was one of my favorites of the million dollar movies. Love the movie theme too. Great memories.
I totally love this music. The Long Ships starring Richard Widmark was an excellent Viking movie. I can't find the movie on RUclips though. I would enjoy seeing it again.
It's on amazon dvd
From the very first time I saw this movie...I was thrilled just to listen to the theme. The story was absolutely "original" and left me w/an impression since it first came out! I have wonderful memories of this because I took my two cousins to see this movie (unfortunately they are in Heaven). I downloaded this theme on my facebook and email addresses. Later into my MP3 player. I LOVE this THEME! which has been in my heart all these years. Thanks alot for putting on youtube.
The mare of steel scared the living shit out of me in this movie. Awesome theme. Jason and the argonauts was another. Kids these days have no sense of wonder nor adventure.
I still think of the Mare sometimes and shudder.
I can still see her running my lord my lord the long ships the long ships;-)
I = Aproox. 11 Great flick, sound track,YES! Pure music!
Through 6th and 7th grade, this is what i played every morning as I looked in the mirror, pulled my head up and shoulders back and prepared for the inevitable encounter with the school bully.
I was a nervous wreck before basketball games. Hummed this song to combat it.
Those early 60's adventure/action movies and soundtracks were the best ever!
Saw this one and many others in Big beautiful movie houses that no longer exist, damn shame.
This thrilling -- and totally idiomatic -- score was composed by Dusan Radic (1929 - 2010), born in the former Yugoslavia. He was active as a film composer mainly in the 1960s, when he scored several Serbian-language films, and later international productions The Long Ships and Genghis Khan.
The film was directed by legendary Oscar-winning British cinematographer and filmmaker Jack Cardiff, OBE, BSC (1914 - 2009), considered the greatest color cameraman who ever lived.
I put the epic music from "The Long Ships," "The Vikings," "The 13th Warrior," & the newer version of "Jason & the Argonauts" on the same CD. What an eargasm. Over an hour of great music.
Thanks MagicalTrombonist. For three minutes and thirteen seconds, I was eight years old again.
I was a young kid and loved the Viking movie about the golden Bell and this theme song still rings in my head
The soundtrack is hopefully still available on vinyl.Colpix records number PX730.It is a double sided version of the great theme and it is by the Charles Alberine orchestra.I still have the 45 which I bought some 48 years ago and still play it.it is still brilliant
Best Viking Movie ever,,great Soundtrack.Like fucking Gladiator.
"The Long Ships" and "The Vikings" are the two best Viking movies ever made.
Talk about, your great *"Turner Classic Movie", Saturday Matinee Double-bills!*
I love this movie and the theme is superb thanks for putting this on youtube and greatly appreciated and i remember seeing this movie when i was eight years old and being terrifed of the mare of steel.
Mr. Sidney Poitier was born on 20 February 1927; he celebrated his ninety-fourth birthday yesterday.
Though it is well known that he and Richard Widmark had a particularly miserable time making this picture, nevertheless it remains a rousing adventure yarn wonderfully directed by the legendary Jack Cardiff - and made all the more so by the stupendous score of Dušan Radić (with its heroic theme introduced in the Main Title which, like for so many other commenters here, became an ingrained - and treasured - musical memory from childhood). Sigh...
Unfortunately he died today. R.I.P.
I was 6 when saw the movie. i found a log to be my "ship" with a branch sticking out near the end as the prow. I stood on the "foredeck" scanning the horizon for new adventures. Glad i didn't take it on the water. Now i realize this should be played when I get to work at Northgate School in Columbus, OH. LMAO.
i was 9 years old and for some reason i cannot forget this song
at the drive in movies
I was 9 when I first saw this film. All I want to say.
Only one word:
Effing Magnificent.
(OK, two words)
First heard this one summer in Laramie, Wyoming...loved it...then saw the movie
This is the soundtrack album version but there was a better, fuller version for the 45 "single" heard on Top 40 radio at the time the movie was in theaters in late 1963.
Awesome score. A good adventure film. My Favorite line Father The Gods Have Brought Me Back. Richard Widmark at his best
Highlights from the original soundtrack album THE LONG SHIPS are now available as download and stream on most music stores online.
Wonderful movie
desde el año 1965 hasta ahora el 2012.he recordado esta musica en mi mente,es bella y me gustan las grandes instrumentaciones.Por algo soy musico y toco trompeta...Gracias de todo corazon al Sr, ke subio este video.
Never forget being taken to see this by my Dad in the early sixties
I host a conservative talk show on the radio system at my 55 and over development. This will be my theme song!
I was so taken by the theme that I rushed home and used musical notation to get it down for future reference. Over the years when I'd run across the note I'd have to stop and sing the tune to myself.
I loved this movie. Theme song is great.
Loved the start with the long ship racing in to the jetty. I tried this with a racing eight and it worked.
Best movie about Vikings...E V E R
Tetsuo Shima I prefer both this, and The 13th Warrior, over The Vikings,
All three are awesome however.
***** You do, of course realize if I want actual history I'll read a book and that films are Entertainment, right? And The Long Ships is entertaining as Fuck.
And no, The Vikings was NOT vastly better, except in your opinion, which you are more than entitled to.
***** Some folks, I think, can suspend their disbelief more than others. And in any case this film has the real nostalgia value from childhood attached to it for me. I was a lot older before I understood The Vikings.
+tom moore My IQ is 147 and I have a Doctorate in history.
What's your degree in, Douchebaggery? Fucking Halfwit.
+Midland Redux Guy's an arrogant Halfwit. You are probably wasting your time on him.
Same here. Thanks!
Când eram copil am văzut acest film de 7 ori în aceiași săptămâna și tot as vrea să-l mai vad
love this movie and the theme song
No one who saw it, ever forgot the Mare of Steel!!!
Great music 👌 score, the Long ships and Vikings were best movies about Vikings Kirk Douglas and Richard widmark were surpberd
어릴때 TV주말의 명화에서 보고
주테마 멜로디가 계속 기억에 남아있었는데 여기서 듣네요
추억돋아요
superb , stirring music! thanks for posting.
An excellent film score!
Been looking for this for a very long time. Thanks for uploading!
I second that emotion!
Please accept my thanks as well : one of my all-time favorites....
Widmark as the likable Viking rogue :) One of my fav films of his. rousing score. Like the 1958 Vikings score.
MAGNIFICOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
I REMEMBER THE MARE OF STEEL, TALK ABOUT A SET OF STONES TO RIDE THAT!!!!
Yo! You do realize that, *taking, that particular ride,* wasn't exactly done as a *"test of manhood"!*
Absolutly brilliant 7 stars to dimiitri
*THE BELL!! THE BELL!!*
これぞ娯楽映画 55年前月曜ロードショーで初めて見てリチャードウィドマークの大ファンに!
Looked for soundtrack many many years
Radic was a great composer. Equally at home in the concert hall and the film studio. How unfortunate that the soundtrack was so poorly recorded.
and I would add poorly played.
a can still remember when they raided Lindisfarne a was only 6
Thank you for taking the time to upload this favorite. I'm your newest subscriber!
ANOTHER SHIP! BY...THE ....GODS!
great stuff from the small town movie show
pleased I was born in the 50s,
I must have played this hundred times off ya thanks mate, can you buy it on google or summat ?
Boa continuacao dos vikings
This great, memorable theme is by Serbian composer Dušan Radić.
What a magnificent glorious theme. Watched the movie in theater when it first came out. The theme has always been on my mind. But now that I listen to it, the orchestral arrangement is not very good, nor is the quality of the orchestra. Anyone know of a later re-arrangement and recording?
yo probably never going to watch the moive, but the book was a master piece
If Carlsberg did epic movie theme tunes....
The Mare of Steel still gives me nightmares
Wanted to be a Viking after this but Bears drafted me.
arthur131313 lol
So powerful.... I've seen this movie a hundred times.... I saw it when it debuted.... Where can I get that poster!!!???
Inesquecível
The "Mare of Steel". - any volunteers?
Good opening theme, but IMO, can't top The Vikings(1958).
Just my opinion ,but while this is a good movie ,and a good opening theme ,it can't match the 1958 film "The Vikings "with Kirk Douglas, Tony Curtis Ernest Borgnine ,and Janet Leigh.ODIN!
Where did you *GET THIS!* I would like to have this in my smartphone's music library! Please tell me the website that it's available on!
You can download it from the video
Disappointed that the fully nude Bebar Loncar slave market scene was cut from the movie. Never to be seen or even acknowledged... as if it never happened.
Who were the main actors in the longships
hahahaha same feeling
in some ways better than the vikings sing aliong to both themes
Forget Lawrence of Arabia and Spartacus as other great ones.
Everybody's gotta whine about something, I suppose.
Well go to sweden there are millions of them,,,,,
