Love this movie. Cheesy and historically vague. The prelude always stuck with me, about collecting all this gold to create the greatest bell of solid gold. Great fun.

Quite a horrible death, being cut in half between the legs, or... other parts... Then, you pray that the executioner already cut your head before falling down, and the spikes are there to finish you off if somehow you survived.
I have an eerily similar experience to many other commenters. I flicked the tv on when I was about 10. I saw only this scene and then turned it off. Now, 30 years later I can still remember the scene very clearly including the camera angles, the music, the victim’s face and much of the dialogue. It’s quite a disturbing memory. But I convinced myself that I had imagined it, because it’s such an implausible and sadistic turn of events. Reading other comments with an almost identical experience is mind-blowing.
Yes, I thought the same - that it was a nightmare or something horrific - but I actually saw the movie as a little kid with my folks. Another movie that haunts me from childhood is the one where an ancient army shines their shields toward the sun in the direction of the oncoming army who were blinded by the sun shining against the shields, riding their horses over a huge cliff to their deaths. It was a historical film with a Kirk Douglas or similar actor.

I can see the Mare being marketed by "K-Tel" or "Po-Peel" - it slices, it dices, it purees and it can make Julian fries - cut your onions without tears and it cleans up easily!!!!!!!

Remember this from way way back seeing it on the Telly one Saturday afternoon. This scene is what all the kids at school were talking about on Monday morning, it definitely made an impression, just of the thought of it gives you an uncomfortable feeling in the crown jewels.

As a boy of 7, nothing prepared me for this, absolutely nothing. Getting to "Brass Tax" or Getting down to cases, this Hollywood that I grew up with, is not the Hollywood of today. Something very tangible has been lost from the past. I owe my strength of courage, because of the rawness of such movies like this "Masterpiece". And I have a ton of other attributes that are innate to me, because of such movies like this movie, period. Bless Mr. Richard Widmark, and Mr. Sidney Poitier. Long Live "The Long Ships"

I bought the 45 of the "The Long Ships"--one side is with orchestra, the other side (Part 1) is a great piano version of the theme played both all the time in the 70s...and as for the Mare of Steel--every time it's super chilling to imagine....worse than chalk screeching on a blackboard!

My favorite part of that is how they have a bed of nails to make sure that the two halves of you that reach the bottom get tortured as well. PS the device is unlikely to actually cut you in half. Simple gravity would not get through the bones. Still not a day at the beach tho. My sister gave the best comment on this movie: Sid looked really hot back then. Other holes in the movie: That bell is not going to ring encased in cement like that.

I saw this in the cinema as a kid, the unedited version with the spike at the bottom. Shocked me for days. when I saw the DVD last year I was pleased that it had been edited out.
I remember when I was in junior school our RE teacher mentioned a slide similar to this which was used by some ancient civilization e.g. the Romans for purposes of execution. There was a rather sensitive girl in the classroom at the time who had actually passed out prior to that upon hearing a story about a Cyclops getting stabbed in the eye, and we were amazed when she didn't faint upon hearing that.
The Long Ships and the Vikings are two movie I get mixed up often. However, who could not appreciate Richard Witmark and Sidney Poitier together in film.
I saw this when I was about 10, in 1978. It was horrible! 😭 I couldn't imagine how horrible that death must have been! I was hoping that it was relatively quick! 😔
I first saw this in 1965 at the old movie theatre in Penshurst, Sydney, Australia. If my memory serves me correctly it was a double bill with Siege of the Saxons. As just a boy I loved the film but this scene was scary. To make it worse the Mare of Steel was probably a based on a true device.
Watching it on Cinevault (Roku) right now. As a direct descendant of Vikings, I enjoyed the film, but it is riddled with artistic license and historical inaccuracies. Fun movie. Skål!

Read the original novel. The film doesn't do it any justice whatsoever. The book is incredible.

I saw this when I was about 10, in 1978. It was horrible! 😭 I couldn't imagine how horrible that death must have been! I was hoping that it was relatively quick! 😔
I first saw this in 1965 at the old movie theatre in Penshurst, Sydney, Australia. If my memory serves me correctly it was a double bill with Siege of the Saxons. As just a boy I loved the film but this scene was scary. To make it worse the Mare of Steel was probably a based on a true device.
The actor was apparently later the star of Rising Damp Leonard Rossiter
The spikes at the bottom are not really gonna add to the lethality of this contraption 😂

As a direct descendant of Vikings, I enjoyed the film, but it is riddled with artistic license and historical inaccuracies.
Fun movie.
