I was a Junior at Penn State University in 1972. I used to sell my blood plasma twice a week to be able to buy beer and record albums. I bought this album not knowing the guys playing or any song on it. It turned out to be a pleasant surprise and i still have the album.
That's how I found out about (Terry) Cashman, (Gene) Pistilli and (Tommy) West. I bought their first album knowing nothing about them, and it is one of my favorites.
I have adored this song since I was a little kid. My mom had their record from when she was in high school and I used to beg her to "rewind' it so I could listen to the piano playing at the end! As soon as I got an ipod I found a digital copy of it on Amazon. It's been on my favorites list ever since. :)
Great post - Been a Cashman & West fan since I heard "American City Suite" and "Talkin' Baseball". What I just discovered not long ago was that Tommy West co-wrote "Sunday Will Never Be The Same" and my favorite Al Martino song - Saustalito" I'm looking forward to looking through the rest of your posts. I've done something similar with a blog about many of the songs I've loved throughout the years. Thanks for the memories!
Beautiful! Reminds me of 4 old friends from the 70s, with whom I sang and played double bass in a group named the Siroccos (in Dublin Ireland) Dom and Claire Geraghty, Brian and Sue McGovern... All 5 of us extremely talented in our day!! Sadly they left me behind and all emigrated to California! I am assuming they are all legal naturalised citizens!!
A bit of trivia...Jimmie Haskell ("Ode to Billie Joe") wrote the string parts, and the string section was Sid Sharp's group, IIRC. Haskell wrote 3 sweetening charts for the Cashman & West album between 9PM and 6AM the night before the recording session, and messengered the charts to me to extract the parts (violins, viola, cello). Both of us stayed up all night to do this, and Haskell got to take a short nap before the 9AM recording date, but I didn't!
Myself, I first heard this song early in the 1990s (on a Toronto AM radio station called AM 740)....only....it was (Canadian-born singer) Bobby Curtola's version that I heard; then. I--not unreasonably--then presumed that Bobby was the first one to record this specific song. Nonetheless--now that I know that Bobby was, in fact, not the first one to record this song--I like this version; as well....
You mean Snowbird. Not exactly the same, but very similar--although the melody lines in Songman are much longer. But it is not the same song. Snowbird was written by Gene MacLellan and Songman was written by Cashman and West. I suppose it is possible that C&W were influenced by Snowbird.
Yes, you're correct. I sometimes write things before thinking! I understand your point of view, but the Anne Murray song I was familiar with. I picked up a used album by Cashman & West and as soon as I heard "Songman" I said wait... I heard that melody before. I just wonder if any copyright lawsuits were every brought out??
I know you’re not Tim. Tim was my uncle who taught me how to play guitar. He’s dead. We used to play some of the old stuff like this. Up until Spotify and RUclips and the like these songs were impossible to find. Thanks to folks like you we get to hear them again. Thanks!
@@bandintheattic Well, thanks. Sorry to hear about your uncle, but glad you had good times with him. Years ago they were kicking us off for posting this music, but I guess they got tired of playing whack-a-mole and gave up. Which is good, because now we can all enjoy old music instead of it being locked away in somebody's copyright vault.
My mom had the album. She died in 2017. I still miss you, mom.

Love this song, played it so much wore out my album, remembered all the words with American City Suite which was ahead of its time. Terrific talent!
RIP Tommy West. You were a true song man and troubadour.

Thank you for your work on this song. I enjoyed it in the 1970s, and now I love, treasure, and appreciate it as I never could as a teenager.

@eclipsejd14 Glad you like it! Thanks for stopping by.
Great concept.
Would you please download the flip side to this? I believe the title is, If You Were A Rainbow.
Isn't this song the same melody and chords as Songbird by Anne Murray in 1969??
