The clarinet in the hands of a master may truly be one of the greatest instruments.
many of you may not believe this but i went to eddie daniel's most recent concert at the jazz bakery in california and at the concert i was talking to eddie, and mentioned this piece and how well he played and he turned me around and said, by the way there is the man who made this wonderful arrangement. i was stunned, it was crazy
My dad was a professional clarinetist, and we shared a great appreciation of Eddie Daniels' virtuosity and ability to successfully cross music genres
Agreed, he saunters, matches, struts gracefully from one beautiful room to another, always in the house that clarinet built, and all we can do is follow him from one breathtaking vista to the next.
i am a 16 year band director specializing in woodwinds. eddie daniels is the clarinet world's 'tiger' or 'jordan'. just amazing.
his tone is so pure and liquidy.
thank you for putting this on youtube.
I feel very lucky and honored to have played this piece with Eddie Daniels in 2005. To have such a great musician play with you at any time is amazing. I loved that during rehearsal with us each time the jazz solo section would be different. Sometimes I forgot to come in on my part because I was enjoying watching him so much.
É impressionante como ele transita entre o erudito e o jazz com total desenvoltura em ambos estilos!
Blue notes; Bent notes, even vibrato, supposedly a no-no for classical clarinetists. Rubato! Sounds GREAT.
OH YEAH!!!!
clearly a master of all genres of music
i love the vibrato that he's able to achieve
Rien à dire, la clarinette parfaite!
The world stopped. For six minutes and fifty-one seconds, the world stopped.
chuck norris is awesome in the clarinet :)
Reeds worry about him being too tough.
This phenomenal!! Pure genius.
the best clarinet player...
desde colombia,
EXELENTE !!!
This just shows what a great instrument the clarinet can be in the right hands. In the wrong hands, it can be a weapon! I always knew of Eddie Daniels' abilities on jazz and classical clarinet, just hadn't really witnessed it until this clip. Outstanding.
I get chills when I listen to Eddie Daniels play! I agree, the only person I know of that has mastered the mix of jazz and classical or who can even do both as well. A close 2nd is Doreen Ketchens. I am not sure that she has had as many opportunities as Eddie Daniels. She, too, is a joy to listen to.
Just amazing..!!! eddie daniels its the best exponent of the clarinet actually... Thanks for your music eddie...!
I am in awe... best performance I've ever had the pleasure of listening to.
I sill cant believe I got to experience this live!
Oh my God!!! he makes fell in silence and i know that God create great things.
Mr. Eddie is blessed by God and was born to play and make music.
Eddie, now what is a classical sound and what is a jazz sound. Flawless interchanges, bravo!
A good sound is a good sound.
This is included the album "Breakthrough". I bought it many years ago.
He's also an outstanding sax player; especially alto. Never got the credit he deserves. This solo is markedly different from the one on the album; the mark of a true innovator.
A still younger Eddie is at his Classical best; after all, he is a trained Classical clarinet maestro who also mastered the art of American Classical Music, Jazz. I also adore this musical side of Eddie, who continues to 'work' the two genres interchangeably and very effectively.
wyndhl eodumegwu Although many notable players have tried to cross the Jazz/Classical divide, few have succeeded in quite the same way as Eddie Daniels in my view. Benny Goodman, Artie Shaw and others tried it but were not really equally at home in the classical as they were in the Jazz style. The trumpeter Wynton Marsalis is the only other wind player I can think of who can truly perform at the very top level in 'both' styles.
Wow. Completely phenomenal.
Trust me - the orchestra members are holding on for dear life trying to enjoy the ride and keep up. I had the pleasure of interviewing Eddie for a trade publication years back and found him to be indeed, a well-bred demon - I think that is the phrase Leonard Bernstein used to describe him. Show that reed who's boss Eddie! Like no other.
The pianist Hiroko Kokubu is also Fantastic!

reed from steel!!these switches from classical sound to jazz are amazing!
3:29 the lick
The Break doesn't exist for Mr. Eddie Daniels ! Sheer joy indeed . . .
Methinks he broke the break.
The composer Jorge Calendrelli is to be lauded here also.
Chris Murphy Tuition:
I do concur with your observation.
Eddie is also an excellent flute and tenor saxophone player. He has been one of the able-bodied multi-instrumentalist in the Todd Jones' Big Band, during the 60s I think. I wish he can play some flute and piccolo once more.
Eddie Daniels, simply majestic!!!
Why 9 dislike? Unfortunately people do not apreciate the real music.
I jus found someone to look up too... eddie daniels you're my idol!!!
beautiful! thank you for sharing this.
Bernard Berkhout
MASTER !!!
@RyaZila24 This just demonstrates what a beautiful instrument the clarinet can be - in the right hands. In the wrong hands, it can be a weapon.
there is a transcription book available with the actual solo he played on the recording. You can buy it on amazon.
Wow, I was there too! He was amazing!
gotta love the eddie daniels characteristic smile at the end.
This warms my heart.
Finally someone posted a vid of this, thank you!! This is what got me hooked on Eddie Daniels in college. I used to listen to it for hours every day back then.
@youtube why bother with likes/dislikes...all it does is facilitate/enable the haters out there.....who in their right mind could dislike this piece. Do all of us a favour and get rid of that useless function. Best Regards =D
He is a Monster Klarinett Player
Fantastic.
Amazing! He's the best!
Oui Patrice , sacré musicien , merci . Dany , ta voisine de table d'hier ;
Awesome as ever!
amazing !
Bravo👏👏👏
Long live the clarinets!
wow that is absolutely amazing
Spectacular...
he is the best!!
The best ABA form l've ever heard
Oh man!!! I have the album (CD). This is just as breathtaking, and I thought the cadenza at the end was even better! I prefer his clarinet sound on the album though - slightly rounder and warmer.
my jaw's too heavy to pick up off the ground right now. I played this song on piano for a recital. It was fun.
Hiroko Kokubu, according to the description, i don't know personally
yes
Thank You...
Arranged by Jorge Calandrelli!!!
*twitch, twitch* It's freaking beautiful, and his technique is out of this world!!!
I fell in love with Mr. Daniels today.
Magistral!!!
thank you for this great music
@TedLane
a few weeks ago i played the bass guitar in our bigband at midwest and eddie daniels played with us :D
veramente staordinario!!!
espectacular
Woooowwww
Incrível
He's like the white version of Grover Washington Jr. to my clarinet.
dayum, good stuff...
Cutie piano player too
the 4 people who disliked this are probably Bieber fans...
Amen
Otro nivel 👏🏻
Jodeeer!
by Carl Ph. E. Bach arr. Jorge Calandrelli
hermosa melodia ----- = ) song
That might be because it's an improvised solo. The version in the book is probably either transcribed from Breakthrough or pretty basic to allow for improvisation.
@TedLane i accually saw him on my trip in pluto. quite a differet guy. he plays the electris bass. his skin is inside out too.
Why does an Eddie daniels remake these album with his new bakun clarinet. Personally i think his LeBlanc which he's playing on in this video is a far superior clarinet.
I totally agree, listening to these older recordings is very interesting. I've always admired his technical ability but found his tone on the backun instruments too breathy.
I respectfully disagree. I love my Backun clarinet.
hi actually he was playing Yamaha when he recorded this album in mid 80's
YCL 62 not even the 82 custom (It was Ycl 72 in USA)
if hes on Leblanc here then it s quite a bit later but as its in Japan i would imagine it is organized by Yamaha and he is still on Yamahas
I personally think Leblanc are THE best clarinets,I used to work at UK Bill Lewingtons back in 80's who were UK distributor for Yamaha + Leblanc.
but hey he could make ANYTHING sound amazing
saying this I dont like as much his current sounds or his sound since he changed to Buffet etc etc or backun whatever he is paid to play these days ..
.i met him a couple of times before he was world famous as the album breakthrough was being made ,i know some of the orchestral musos on the album as it was made in London.
@@NBmusoman in this video the clarinet does not look like the Yamaha. I have searched for pictures of older Yamaha clarinets and none have that oval shaped plate over the A key. Actually, that oval shaped plate is used by Buffet in their Prestige line. Maybe it's a Buffet?
Sorry i presumed this was recorded when it was quite new mid 80’s clearly not as he switched clt allegiance many times when this album was made he was on Yamaha but this is later when hes gone over Buffet .. then to Leblanc and to Backun.
Did he ever endorse Selmer ?
Obviously hes no loyalty which is a shame as such a master has to chop and change to earn a crust?
holy jesus hes good :O
too bad about the three people who sneezed when they tried to click on the like button and hit the dislike button by accident :'(
Insuperabile pezzo !!! Bellissima musica !! Grande Eddie, solo Henghel Gualdi gli è superiore per il suono ma non per la tecnica !!! Grande musica !!! Mary Italy
@austinwaynick
Good thing they had that classical there to clean up all the jazz.
es el amo
Восхитительно !!!
Please put up the rest of this concert if you have it! There is more to this so don't hold out on us!
Where is possible to find the score ??? is very good, beautiful . Great.
Thanks
genius
comon man, this is prior to that correspondence with rovner
@TedLane Were... :( RIP Eddie Daniels...
There is a CD with this on it but it's not available any more :-(
"He's like, the Jake E Lee of jazz clarinet."
anyone knows what the name of that pice ? amaizing and the improvisation part :)
1:34
In terms of technique, is Eddie Daniels considered to be the best clarinet player ever?
yeesh i never thought tht the clarinet could go tht high and i play clarinet!
Great performance, bro!! This is fucking hot!!
Hah, saw your comment after I posted mine...I agree! London Philharmonia is much better (of course, it is also a studio quality recording as compared to a live performance).
je sais!
has anyone transcribed his solo???
yes
i believe its on musescore
