His girlfriend used to ware Teen Spirit deodorant. After a night of being with her, Kurt was passed out. And a female band mate and friend of Kurt's girlfriend smelled him. And she wrote on the wall, "Kurt smells like teen spirit". Basically Kurt's girlfriend left her mark or scent on him. Later Kurt wrote a song, not knowing Teen Spirit was a deodorant. He just liked what that chick wrote on the wall that night. So he called up his ex-girlfriend's band mate, and asked her for permission to use that saying for the title of one of his new songs. Since they were both in punk rock bands....the girl agreed to let him use the title for his song. The entire time Kurt had no idea it was the name of a feminine deodorant.
Kathleen Hannah, of Bikini Kill, wrote "Kurt smells like Teen Spirit" on his Olympia apartment wall. The video was inspired by one of Kurt's favorite movies Over the Edge where the kids trash their school and set cop cars on fire. The cheerleaders were local strippers.
Kathleen was bandmates with Tobi Vail in Bikini Kill and Tobi and Kurt were dating. Kathleen jokingly sprayed paint to say he had Tobi's scent on him. This was before he found out Teen Spirit was a teenage deodorant.
He’s used product names before. Breed used to be called Immodium after the stomach medication, and there was a facial grooming kit back in the day called Mr. Mustache. I saw a guy with one in Ellensburg, WA back in the mid-90s, so it’s possible Kurt was aware of the brand.
This song came out near the end of 91. I was in 12th grade. Entire school was nuts for this song, even the gifted and special needs classes knew every word
What? You guys haven't done this song yet? Lol This is such a fun song to play on bass and guitar, and Dave's drumming is soo iconic. Y'all gotta check out "In Bloom" from this same album, that song and "Drain You" are my favorites from Nevermind. Such an iconic record and album cover, I still have the poster of this album cover hanging in my room. Great reaction as usual guys! 🤘🤘🤙🤙
This has to be the most boring song to play on the guitar! It’s like as soon as you get to the verse, you’re just hitting two open strings. Without a backing band, it feels a little silly.
First off....HELL FUCKING YES!!!! Nirvana is my favorite band of all time. But to give some perspective, I never listened to music growing up. It wasn't till around 12 years old that I first listened to..... Korn "Issues" from a friend and then in that same night after we listened to the whole album he put on Nirvana's "Nevermind". As much as I love Korn's "Issues" album...Nevermind just blew my mind with how incredible it is. I went hard into learning everything about both bands. And to this day are still my favorite pieces of media. I read all the books and watched all the interviews about Nirvana because I was in love with the band. Melado and Milano....honestly know idea about those but "A mosquito, my libido" is referencing his first girl encounter. "Teen Spirit" was a deodorant at the time and he wrote a song about his first experience with a girl. "A Mosquito, my libido"...what are mosquitoes good at? Sucking up blood. So he is basically saying "with the lights out" Will you suck it?" Haha. Thats my interpretation of it at least. Please do more Nirvana songs. Anything from "Nevermind" is incredible but I would say "Polly (track 6)" or "Something in the way (last track from when he was homeless)" are good starters. Always love your guys videos....I just don't ever really comment.
Great reaction! Jay Z said about this era , Nirvana & Hip hop "“I have always been a person who was curious about the music and when those forces come on the scene, they are inescapable. Can’t take your eyes off them, can’t stop listening to them. Cobain was one of those figures. I knew we had to wait for a second before we became that dominant force in music.”
This song has absolutely nothing to do with deodorant. Kurt and one of his friends were hanging out drinking one night and she wrote "Kurt smells like teen spirit" on the wall. Kurt had no idea that teen spirit was a deodorant but liked the sound of it. So, the name of this song was pulled from that event. Not sure if there is really any meaning to this song but I do know the lyrics, "here we are, now entertain us" is something Kurt would say when arriving to a party
Y'all should check out Weird Al Yankovic's parody of this song called "Smells Like Nirvana", I think it's one of his best parodies and it's freaking hilarious. It will definitely make for an entertaining reaction, I hope you guys check it out sometime!
So too continue! You guys have GO TO react to The Beatles “I Am the Walrus”. And you tell ME - and everyone what in THE HELL this song’s about. Do it!!!!
In an interview conducted the day Nevermind was released, Cobain stated the song was about his friends, explaining, "We still feel as if we're teenagers because we don't follow the guidelines of what's expected of us to be adults ... It also has kind of a teen revolutionary theme." 🤘🏼💙🤘🏼
So you definitely need to react to "Smells like Nirvana" by Weird Al. The song is actually about not being able to understand Kurt's lyrics. The story is Nirvana was playing SNL and Weird Al called a friend who worked there to talk to Kurt and get permission. Kurt said yes and then said "it's not going to be about food is it?" And Al said "actually it's about how nobody understands your lyrics". Kurt laughed and gave his ok. Years later Dave Grohl said hearing the Weird Al parody was how he knew they had made it
I always love to sing the “my libido” part as “my burrito”. And “cut an eye out” for “the denial”. I like your analysis, Hollywood. I always kinda saw it in that sort of way-like pheromones.
Great great song guys. Fun fact in 1991 NIRVANA were due to play on the UK chart show called TOP OF THE POPS. When they heard that they had to mime the song they weren’t happy, so they sabotaged their performance and played really slow and low vocals, needless to say they never played on there again lol 😂😂 KEEP ON ROCKING DUDES 🤟🤟🤟🏴🏴
Does anybody else remember when this video was originally airing on MTV, back in the fall of 91, and MTV posting the lyrics on screen? Because his lyrics were nigh indecipherable at that point in time, given the average listeners lack of sophistication musically at that time. I swear that I witnessed it back then, but have never it commented on anywhere. They really were game changers, whether haters wanna admit it or not. They ushered in a whole new way of looking at music. Because of Cobain, I discovered Melvins and Jesus Lizard, two bands I adore. And those led to so many more underground artists.
Please please please react to mad season live river of deceit, lifeless dead, artifical red. So many great songs. This is a Layne Staley side project so so good!!!!!!

Still remember going to the memorial at the Seattle Center.Such a loss. They have a bench next to his house where a bunch of people sign and leave trinkets, it's pretty cool.
As a man and a metalhead with long hair i definitely use womens shampoo and conditioner. It gets the job done and leaves my hair silky smooth and smelling great. Funny enough theres been a study where women find mens products better for them. For instance our razors. They say they are more aggressive in removing hair and thats why they are always taking our razors lol. I know that sounds backwards but you are 100% right Hollywood!
He is using contrast of words within an analogy by using opposites . A maloto is to an abino, as a mosquito is to his Libido. In other words, he is saying his Libido is big
I was a sophomore in high school when this came out... This is the most Gen X song to ever Gen X. Boy did it resonate with my weird little teenage soul.... (Though "Breed" is my fave track from this album)
This song and the album Nevermind was released in Sep 1991 and I was 14 years old at the time. It changed my music tastes radically. The late 80's and early 90's was a great time to grow iup!!!
The song is pretty much a teen angst anthem more than anything. Think back to how you guys were when you were in your teen years. How you were trying to fit in with the right group of friends. The hormonal changes and how people didn't understand you. To me, all those things kind of reflect what Teen Spirit was about. Note of interest: the first three songs on Nevermind, the album this came from, mentioned guns in the lyrics 3 years before Kurt's passing. Kind of eerie.
Love playing this song on violin. Fun trivia: they nailed that recorded version on only the second take. And if I remember correctly, I think pretty much all the songs on Nevermind, save for Something in the Way, was recorded in one or two takes.
Hopefully you guys read this, but on the topic of deodorant I use the native brand. My favorite scent is the cucumber and mint. I'm a 30-year old man. The scent isn't overpowering and it feels really light when you put it on. None of that slimy gel kinda stuff. I pretty much exclusively use native for their body wash shampoo and conditioner too. Natural ingredients and none of that fake stuff. Plus you can get the same scent across their entire product line
Thinking about it, my guess is Kurt was describing young people as seen by older generations. A mulatto is someone who's mixed, an albino is someone lacking color, a mosquito is a blood sucker pest, and libido is obvious. Putting it together, it's elders saying 'youths today are too diverse/not diverse enough, are horny leeches that will destroy society' and so on. Maybe a reference to interracial couples? IDK. Every generation feels disaffected, but that one was fairly nihilistic at the time. 'I found it hard, it's hard to find / Oh well, whatever, nevermind' is a good example of that. And 'denial'? Everyone was trying to pretend that everything was fine when it really wasn't. I'd enjoy seeing you do other Nirvana songs.
The nostalgia listening to this hits hard! White Zombie, Korn, **Bush, and Nirvana were just among a few great bands in an era that seethed great music. I'd be lying if I said I didn't miss these days. ** I liked them!
You can still find the commercials for Teen Spirit. It was deodorant for girls made by Speed Stick. One kid actually says, "Smells like teen spirit!" Nirvana put them, and all hair bands, out of business with this song. edit: Weird Al - Smells Like Nirvana
mornin! Hey fellas! Great song choice! I haven't heard that in a long while! I loved y'all's reaction,it was great! And appreciated your breakdown of the lyrics! Thanks guys!😁🤓❤️
Imagine being the SIXTH drummer in a band and being the only one anyone ever remembers/becoming the most famous. Fans of the album Bleach will know a second.
Man I love your reactions they are so amazing, you guys give your true reaction, your super funny and your not scared to be yourself I love it, also I song I would love to see you look at is state of love and trust by Pearl Jam
Not sure if there’s really any deep meaning to the song. He said different things at different times regarding the song’s ‘meaning’. Sometimes people just make up lyrics on the fly and they keep them cuz they fit into that ‘space’ in the song. People loved to label Kurt as the ‘spokesperson of a generation’ so I think he sometimes wrote nonsensical lyrics just to f*ck with them. The song Sappy was thought to have some deep meaning about gender roles in a relationship, for example, but Kurt claimed it was just a song about his turtle 🤷🏻♀️😆 Speaking of perfume, you should listen to Scentless Apprentice 😊
I love the interaction you two have, you really need to look at the song (The Rumbling) from Attack on Titan!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!?? The band is called (SIM) and they are from Japan. They are pretty big around Japan and parts of the US.
You should definately react to Alan Parsons "Sirius/Eye In The Sky" together. They blend together. Alan did production on Abby Road for the Beatles and on Dark Side of the Moon for Pink Floyd. You will definately recognize Sirius.
A band that has been mentioned here and there is Failure. The lead singer has a voice that reminds me of Kurt’s. I would suggest “Sergeant Politeness” from them.
You guys Crack me up! "They look happy" and "They go to Anarchy High".... 😅🤣 Btw.... you do know the drummer is the rock legend, our own Dave Grohl! (Drummer, guitar player, singer, writer, producer, etc. Founder of the Foo Fighters! Ya!!) Love to watch your channel. 👍
I don’t know how accurate it is, but I’ve just always felt that it was like a teen angst anthem, about being rebellious and what not. Y’all should do another Icon for Hire reaction. Gatekeepers is their newest track and it’s a banger.
Fun fact. Kurt HATED this song. He hated playing it and performing it. You need to check out weird Al's version too. Had the same studio and the janitor was the same and tony hawk was in that video. Nirvana was happy weird AL did their song. They said they know they made when weird AL did a parody. He didn't need to ask for permission since it was the same label.
@@lesliedaubert1411 I agree. I remember an old interview with Tom Araya saying he hated playing raining blood but it wasn't about what he wants, it was what the fans want. "We wouldn't be where we are without the fans." Now I can't find it. Mandala effect?
Another epic reaction. Hilarious of course. Id really like to see you react to Billy Thorpe - Children of the Sun. Think y'all would really like this one!

Cobain when asked what it was about he said listen to the lyrics ( more precisely it' in the lyrics). I Think you might appreciate the UK artist Jamie T (Unless you've already heard him). He mixes singing and rapping styles. You may need the lyrics available though as he performs in his East London street speak. Really good though. Try his song Sticks'N'Stones. A bit of cussing in the song but you know what to do. Enjoyed watching you, have fun guys.
I have grown to almost hate this song because it was so overplayed back in the day, but since you guys did a reaction, I watched it anyway just cuz I like watching you two!😂
8:16 After Recording This Song In The Studio..Kurt Cobain Took A Copy Of It Home 2 Let His Mom Listen 2 It 1st…She Stopped It 1/2 Way Through & Said “Boy…I’m Telling U Right Now..U Better Put UR Seat Belt On…B/c UR About 2 Go On A Big Ride!!” Sadly…Kurt Didn’t Buckle Up 4 The ‘Big Time’ Ride…That He Was Standing In Line 4!!😢
The Kurt Cobain incident at a concert in Belgium just before Nevermind came out. - When Nirvana played for about 1000 people in a famous venue in Ghent, Belgium, we were waiting at the back entrance with 20 fans without a ticket still hoping to get in. During that concert Kurt Cobain threw his guitar into the audience. It ended up against a young fan who lost almost all of his front teeth. Kurt went to that fan. He apologized to him for what happened, and arranged for his fan to be immediately taken care of at the nearest hospital. ... After an half hour me and a few fans (Bleach fans) decided to leave the entrance and went to the bar in that same old classic 'beautiful Rococo venue' (dixit Cobain) to drink a couple of Belgian super beers, named Duvel (= Devil). Years later we've heard in the media that 15 fans, who were still waiting at the back entrance finally GOT in for FREE by the door keepers. We were like: damn, damn, damn!!!!
Now I need to dig through your archives to see if you've reacted to a Venom song. If you haven't, I'd recommend . . . you know what? Start where you want. It will all hit hard.
Smells like Teen Spirit is actually referencing Courtney Love. Someone was throwing shade at Kurt saying saying he smelled like Teen Spirit, knowing that was the the brand that Courtney Love used. Basically saying "Smells like youve been hanging out with Courtney.
I used to rock to this joint when I was 17 back in the days. It is great still. but nowadys I like... Moscow Death Brigade. Dirty withe sneakers. Still would love to see you guys react to it. ⛑🏴☠
All is right in my world when Dave Grohl is drumming. It’s hard to pick…they have so many good songs. I’ll throw out one that doesn’t get many mentions - “Frances Farmer Will Have Her Revenge on Seattle”.
PLEASE DO THE WEIRD AL VERSION!!! He does a GREAT Job of matching Kurt's Vocals!! AL plays on the fact of the Lyrics being Hard to Understand! The Video is also VERY Close to This!!!
This song came out when I was in 8th grade. My boy Greg and I went to Mazatlan with my Mom. My Mom let us go out to the club at the hotel without her around 9pm. In Mexico, no one was there and they played this song. My boy Greg and I beat the everliving shit out of each other on the dance floor and the Mexicans were horrified. By the end of the song, the bar tender brought us a glass of water and a shot of tequila each and said "good work"
I am waiting for them to branch into stuff like Candlebox and early Gin Blossoms now that they've covered the big 4 of grunge and dabbled in stuff like 4 Non Blondes.
This moment in time produced some of the best grunge albums at one time, that launched the genre into the pop mainstream. Nirvana - Nevermind Alice In Chains - Facelift Soundgarden - Badmotorfinger Pearl Jam - Ten Stone Temple Pilots - Core

He was the 6th.
7th if you count session musicians.

You guys should do a weird Al day...Smells like Nirvana is amazing. And I am totally an Old Spice guy myself!! 😅
The song Sappy was thought to have some deep meaning about gender roles in a relationship, for example, but Kurt claimed it was just a song about his turtle 🤷🏻♀️😆
Speaking of perfume, you should listen to Scentless Apprentice 😊
Scentless had a good drum beat. Think Dave helped write that part.
Btw.... you do know the drummer is the rock legend, our own Dave Grohl! (Drummer, guitar player, singer, writer, producer, etc. Founder of the Foo Fighters! Ya!!) Love to watch your channel. 👍
I remember it having a NO ,!!?? 😂 MAN WHEN I WAS TEENAGER THEM THANG'S WERE CHRUCH TO US !!!- LMAOOOO !!!! 🤣😂🤣 LOVE YALL
I don’t know how accurate it is, but I’ve just always felt that it was like a teen angst anthem, about being rebellious and what not.
Y’all should do another Icon for Hire reaction. Gatekeepers is their newest track and it’s a banger.
I honestly love you guys, you have something different in your videos reaction that just make me peaceful
"Ooooh that smell! Can't you smell that smell?!" - Lynyrd Skynyrd
That happens with a lot of musicians. They don't want people focusing on just 1 of their songs. They made other great songs to listen to.
@@lesliedaubert1411 I agree. I remember an old interview with Tom Araya saying he hated playing raining blood but it wasn't about what he wants, it was what the fans want. "We wouldn't be where we are without the fans." Now I can't find it. Mandala effect?
Kurt's friend wrote his wall " Kurt smells like teen spirit " that's where he got the idea from
Nirvana - something in the way
You guys should check out a 10 year old girl named Yoyoka play the drums to this it shows this wasn't easy to play she hits the drums like him.
IMO, the most talented man in Nirvana is David Grohl.
I end up singing Weird Al lyrics because I still lose the plot with the Nirvana lyrics.
The chorus is full of opposites. “A mulato, an albino.” So when he says a mosquito, my libido, he’s saying he’s horny
Fun face guys, the (now former) frontman of the band fear factory is in the crowd on this video
Another epic reaction. Hilarious of course. Id really like to see you react to Billy Thorpe - Children of the Sun. Think y'all would really like this one!
Smells Like Teen Spirit
Load up on guns, bring your friends
It's fun to lose and to pretend
She's over bored and self assured
Oh no, I know a dirty word
Hello, hello, hello, how low
Hello, hello, hello, how low
Hello, hello, hello, how low
Hello, hello, hello
With the lights out, it's less dangerous
Here we are now, entertain us
I feel stupid and contagious
Here we are now, entertain us
A mulatto, an albino, a mosquito, my libido
Yeah, hey
Yay
I'm worse at what I do best
And for this gift I feel blessed
Our little group has always been
And always will until the end
Hello, hello, hello, how low
Hello, hello, hello, how low
Hello, hello, hello, how low
Hello, hello, hello
With the lights out, it's less dangerous
Here we are now, entertain us
I feel stupid and contagious
Here we are now, entertain us
A mulatto, an albino, a mosquito, my libido
Yeah, hey
Yay
And I forget just why I taste
Oh yeah, I guess it makes me smile
I found it hard, was hard to find
Oh well, whatever, never mind
Hello, hello, hello, how low
Hello, hello, hello, how low
Hello, hello, hello, how low
Hello, hello, hello
With the lights out, it's less dangerous
Here we are now, entertain us
I feel stupid and contagious
Here we are now, entertain us
A mulatto, an albino, a mosquito, my libido
A denial, a denial, a denial, a denial, a denial
A denial, a denial, a denial, a denial
Shout out Dave Grohl!!! The lyrics are subjective 😂😂😂😂😂😂
I like the Weird Al parody of this song and video, and we learnt what the song was about!
I have grown to almost hate this song because it was so overplayed back in the day, but since you guys did a reaction, I watched it anyway just cuz I like watching you two!😂
React to Aneurysm or Breed live! Can't stop listening and watching after all these years 🤣
Nirvana was never my jam. But they opened the door to those that were. So they definitely need props. Surprised you never covered this.
King of grunge rip Kurt
So you have to react to weird Al Yankovic doing “smells like Nirvana”
Awesome reaction! Can you do more Byzantine? "Justinian Code" 100% you will love!
Lyrics wise it's almost like the song come together by the Beatles kinda weird, but still really catchy
When it comes to nirvana the music came first and lyrics were second. He would change lyrics just to make it rhyme more and sound better.
In my opinion, the best band ever.
Guys please react another song from Nirvana - where did you sleep last night unplugged, this version is epic!!
I don’t know if you guys knew this but the lead singer of Fear Factory is in this video. Not sure what part but you can actually see him in the video
Listen to Kurt's screams entitled "Territorial Pessings"
Fun fact: Dave Grohl, drummer, admitted that he stole that drum flam intro from the Gap Band - 70s funk.
Great reaction as always guys! You should react to Thornhill if you like great deep melodic metalcore. Greetings from Argentina!
Now I need to dig through your archives to see if you've reacted to a Venom song. If you haven't, I'd recommend . . . you know what? Start where you want. It will all hit hard.
School is a great underrated song by nirvana
Smells like Teen Spirit is actually referencing Courtney Love. Someone was throwing shade at Kurt saying saying he smelled like Teen Spirit, knowing that was the the brand that Courtney Love used.
Basically saying "Smells like youve been hanging out with Courtney.
Now you have to watch Weird Al Yankovic's parody of this called "Smells Like Nervana"......it's DEAD.....ON......brilliant!
The song where it all started - the Grunge Era. I was in college that time 2nd Yr .. billiards and booze ...
I used to rock to this joint when I was 17 back in the days.
It is great still.
but nowadys I like... Moscow Death Brigade. Dirty withe sneakers.
Still would love to see you guys react to it.
⛑🏴☠
You need to react to Alan Parsons Project -Sirius/Eye In The Sky
An out of the tragedy we got Foo Fighters
I LOVE NIRVANA I LOVE GRUNGE FOREVER.......
This moment in time produced some of the best grunge albums at one time, that launched the genre into the pop mainstream.
Nirvana - Nevermind
Alice In Chains - Facelift
Soundgarden - Badmotorfinger
Pearl Jam - Ten
Stone Temple Pilots - Core
"i dont think this song is about deodorant" hahaha
I haven’t seen the actual video in forever. I even forget that Dave Grohl is the drummer. But Nirvana. This song is exciting every time.
