    • Mesa Boogie Lone Star head (the one used today)
    Later, 100-watt model with 10, 50- and 100-watt modes.

    For more info on the Lone Star spec and features, check out mesaboogie.com/...
    Pedals used in this video…
    All the reverb you hear in the video is from the amp, until the last playing section with the Collings, when it’s a TC Electronic Hall Of Fame Reverb.
    The first driven section with the Strat is the clean channel with the Keeley D&M Drive on the Mick side.
    There's also a T-Rex Reptile 2 Delay here and there.
    When playing the Collings at around 2:00, that is the drive from the amp only, no pedals. Same for the PRS DGT at around 4:00, T-Rex delay added

    I can confirm Mick's customer service story. I bought a used Mk IV combo in 94'. I had some issue with the tubes as well. Called them up. They called me back on their bill to pay the long distance; then got the tech would had tested my amp by serial number and spent over a hour on the phone with me getting it back to factory spec. Outstanding amplifier that I still use to this day.

      It looks like my comment was deleted. I was stating that bravo to Mick for getting nice treatment from Boogie, he deserves it. Jokingly, I commented that if he could use his influence and contact Randall and get my Lead Drive pot shipped for my Mark IV. I have been waiting for 4 weeks with the promise that the "check is in the mail". The night I wrote that message, the very next day, I FINALLY got my email that the pot was shipped to me. I got it today. Coincidence?? Pretty funny either way....anyhow...I got my pot and I love your channel and content, (thanks for calling Randall to get my pot shipped.....LOL).

      I can tell another story about great service. In 2012 I was shopping Ebay for Mesa/ Boogie's. Lost out on a Mark 3 in white and found a S O B in wood and wicker. Called Mesa to ask questions. Was told someone would call me back. Not really believing I went about my business and about an hour + later phone rang and Tien called me back. Impressed right there, we had about a 15 min conversation about Mark's and the S O B. I bought that amp for $800 and it's the best thing I bought. But the best thing is since I made that sale the other amp came back up for sale. I got beat out so I could find a better amp in the long run. Newer crazy knob filled Boogie's scare me. The repair issue on those multi board rows of knobs Mesa's just make me love my plain old 7 knob Boogie.

      Had a 2x12 Lonestar and got a headshell made for it by Zilla cabs making it a head and cab. Well worth the money! Your back will thank you for it. Also measure and ask for a blanking piece of wood with matching tolex for the gap in the 1x12 combo to finish the look.

      Boogie's weight is bad but I had to really protect mine. Added a road case to the amp weight. WOO HOO ! Crap this thing is heavy for this 63 yr old. But it's pretty.

      +Stephen Whitehead Yep, it's so important all that. I'm in a weird position of knowing most of the people who make the gear I use. The Strat aside, perhaps. But when you have that connection; that respect for the people involved, somehow it makes you (makes me anyway) just connect with everything that bit more. Thanks for watching!

    It can NEVER be overstated: If you have a Boogie, you need to spend time with it. Took me years to get a tone I was satisfied with. They are nowhere near Fender amplifiers which are practically plug-n-play.
    That being said, I'll never get rid of mine. :) My father bought it for me for my 16th birthday.

      I have a MK III Red Stripe that I've owned for a while and still haven't dialed it in. I just bought a MK IVB a couple of months ago and instantly had it dialed it so you are right they are all different and you have to spend time with them. It has been somewhat of a steep learning curve for me being a previous Fender amp player.

      Zac F. I know what you mean mate. I don't own a Boogie, but my regular local live venue hosts both time served and new bands. My observation is that Mesa's can sound breathtaking brilliant in the hands of someone who has good ears & knows what the dials do, but arsegrindingly awful if they're badly set. Mick couldn't set up an amp badly....his ears wouldn't let him!

      It took me a while to figure out my Lonestar, but now it sounds great with my Strats and my PRS DGT, Studio and SC245 guitars. A friend loves when I bring it to gigs for him to use it with his Tele. Without pedals or stepping on the channel switching it’ll go from great sounding cleans to singing distortion on the lead channel simply by hitting the guitar strings harder or turning the guitar’s volume up.

    Having worked at Boogie for a 13+ period. I had the good fortune of playing just about every type of Boogie made. Being a metal/rock guy a Recto would seem to be where I'd be happy you'd think. But to this day the Lonestar is still my favorite Boogie. I do have a Mark V:25 at my house for recording. Someday I hope to get a Triple Crown.

    I've never played a duff Boogie amp. I wanted one since I first saw the dual Rec, aged 16, in the mid-90's. My tastes mellowed over the years, and finally managed to buy a Mark V. It is a joy to play, in fact I don't feel worthy sometimes of it! I discover new tones all the time and it so beautifully preserves a guitar's natural sound. Randall Smith is a legend.

      I went into a Mesa Boogie store in 1990 and tried a few Boogie amps. They all sounded bad. I went to my car and came back with my 1973 Marshall SuperLead (with an extra gain tube) and proceeded to blow their minds with the most glorious tones. They gave me a set of tubes and told me to never return.

  • @tjnugent62
    @tjnugent62 7 лет назад

    I bought a Mark IIb in LA and sent it to Mesa to have it looked over and to get it in good running order. They did this free of charge and upgraded the reverb tank and circuit. I did pay for the tubes and air freight, but Mike Bendinelli was such a great guy to deal with. They were so nice to talk to and deal with. I feel the same way about Mesa Engineering.

      I respectfully disagree with this statement having played many vintage Fenders. They (and their clones) still remain at the top for clean sounds IMHO.
      That being said, the cleans on my buddy's Lonestar Special are very respectable and treat mild overdrive pedals better than most of the modern amps I've played from other manufacturers as well as my own ROV25.

    Love Mesa Boogie. My first was a DC-5 (After watching a great blues guitarist play through a boogie in the local pub and the sound was amazing), then over the years I had a 100w Nomad, F50, Blue Angel and my latest Boogie is the Mark 5:25. All amazing amps in different ways. I'd try other amps but always came home to Boogies.

    I had a similar experience. At the time, I was heavily into home recording, with local bands regularly taking over my house at the weekends. One of the the guitarists turned up with a brand new hardwood and wicker Boogie MkIII, and from that first session I was hooked.
    I then sold a couple of guitars and my Marshall JCM800 half stack in order to fund the purchase of a MkIV, which I still have.

    just watched this again for the umpteenth time. Never thought I'd be able to afford a mesa/boogie really strikes a chord, I was lucky enough to settle on a "Little Rock" amp (1982 I think) with cascading valve pre-amps which I believe (now) was a copy of a MK 1 boogie. I've a 30 watt lonestar which I absolutely love. TPS is amazing, thank you, I haven't played in bands for years and really missed all the banter about gear etc. you've filled a very big gap!!!

    Same here! I love Marshall too, but Boogie has taken excellent care of me time and time again. Everyone in that company has a passion and they are obsessed with making amps that inspire musicians to play, which is what it's all about. • @Julianeales
      @Julianeales 7 лет назад

      Cranked the Lone Star a few times and it's the best amp I have ever had.....but the truth is for most gigs I play in pubs etc it was too loud to turn up to properly working levels so it rarely got going. I have a Hughes and Kettner Tubemeister 36 1x12 combo that I use in pub gigs 1, 5 or 18 watts cranked up so it's driving but at sensible volumes. I found myself using the H and K more and more rather than the Lone Star (and easier to carry). I was going to swap the Lone Star for another high quality, small valve amp so I could run both together on larger gigs. But after looking round opted for the Kemper Powerhead. I have the option of the H and K valve amp with pedal board, or the Kemper, or both. I have to say I am gobsmacked by the Kemper...and that is interesting having switched from such a high quality amp as the Lone Star and being such a valve amp purist!

    Hiya! My first real amp was a Boogie SOB (not the fancy looking one). Brilliant, but I was too young to appreciate that fact. Hey Mick! I have a early Mesa Lonestar Classic "Short Head" I bought on E-Bay. I bought two Bogner "Cube" 1x12 ported cabinets on E-Bay and swapped the speakers to two 8-ohm C-90 Speakers I bought from Mesa. I connect the Cubes in parallel and run them as a 4-ohm "Mini-Stack" !! This setup is unique. It maintains a small floor footprint and you can adjust the controls while standing. I did the "Charles Reeder" mod to the high gain channel. Mostly I play it on the clean channel in 50 watt tweed mode. I use Foxrox ZIM pedals for gain and drive. The reverb pan on it broke and I had to replace it. Mesa says the original "Short Head" was discontinued because there is a potential hum problem between the reverb and the transformer, but I have never experienced this. I have an early Fender SRV Strat and this combination is magic! Do you use the effects loop and Solo pedal? How do you set your controls? Mark

    • @ThatPedalShow

    Great video Mick! I have been playing my Mesa Mark III with Simul-Class since the mid 90's. I love the sound of the 6L6's and the EL 34's together. Loved it so much that I purchased a Mesa V-Twin pedal to get the same versatility from my Marshall SLP 100. Great combination.

      Edward Kowalski . In 82' I took a leap of faith after hearing a few boogies live and without actually trying one personally,I custom ordered a Mark-2B exotic Brazilian ? wood cab and wicker-caned grill , EVM 12 fitted and 5 band EQ ed beast directly from Petaluma . I Actually snail mailed a down payment check and then 3 more installments to match the estimated completion date . At about 80 days in they phoned me to say and apologize that during the burn-in, the tech, Mike Bendinelli , thought it wasn't sounding quite right and that he needed more time to rework a few things. Maybe it was bs and they were just behind no matter, in couple more weeks it arrived in it's anvil road case . The Boogie actually smelled quite fragrant, the mysterious Brazilian hardwood I guess . It was a very remarkable bit of craftsmanship and tonal presence.! It was also the first amp that really responded to my pick and compressed so perfectly . I really didn't even know what that amp trait was at the time . It did the infinite sustain thing ala Carlos , at moderate volume with a dyna comp in the effects loop! I'm Still kicking myself for letting that one go!

    Hey Mick,
    I bought my first Boogie 40 years ago. I drove up to Petaluma to pick it up!
    I now have a Lone Star Special and absolutely love it.
    I found that turning off the effects loop (hard bypass) improves the sound for clean tones especially.
    I know it's nit picking but that's Dan and your fault. You guys have made my ears very perceptive...What do you think?

    • @ThatPedalShow
      @ThatPedalShow  7 лет назад

      +Emilio Conesa I agree Emilio. I've always equated it to a master volume amp turned down lower when you engage all the extra stuff. Sounds great when it's all turned up, but down low.... lacks something for me. Maybe it's just volume! Anyway, I agree - I like the loop switched out. :0)

    Since Boogies have that magical ability to switch out the types of power tu-i mean valves-- with the flip of a switch and without needing to be biased by a professional, have you ever tried yours with EL34s and, if so, how discernible was the difference? I keep entertaining the notion of trying my Mark V with them since I think I'd like the clean channel more (and I'm one of those contrarians who likes clean Marshalls).

    Mick, your lone star is a beast! I know this is subjective but it would be great if you would show us how you both dial in an amp and your favourite pedals to get the tone in your head. Also, what are your go to settings when you're using unfamiliar equipment at a gig and what characteristics are you listening for to help zone in on your sweet spot? Cheers!

    • @ThatPedalShow
      @ThatPedalShow  7 лет назад +2

      +rockpebble100 Thanks! Um, I don't find myself in that position very regularly, but I use the Matt Schofield method. Go through every control one by one, and set it at the point where it's just enough and not too much! An open, neutral kind of clean tone that's just starting to push a little bit. Sounds a bit mad, but it's pretty obvious in every amp. That way the amp is poised and open and ready and your guitar has the best chance of sounding like itself.The pedals do the rest. :0) Does that make sense?

    IMO, The Lone Star and The Maverick, are the best sounding, most honest amps that Mesa has made, since the early Mk I's. They are true tone machines. This coming from someone who's bread and butter for about 25 years, was a Mk IV combo.

      My experience with an Electra Dune are very limited. A few times playing through a mates on an open jam night that he hosts. He convinced me to get up and play a handful of songs so he could take a break for a few. Played his ES-335 through it, and to me it sounded too dark to my ears. Granted, some of that could be my playing style, (fingerpicker, and always playing with my volume and tone controls), but, it never gave me that feeling like I was cutting through the mix. Other thing I didn't particularly like, was the shared tone controls between all 3 modes. Maybe a little more playing around with one, could help remedy that by familiarizing myself with all the controls. I'm going to see if he can loan it to me for a bit, when I slow down a bit in my work, and can get a chance to play around with it in my studio. It seems like an amp perfectly situated for studio work. Unfortunately/Fortunately, I'm pretty busy through July, and won't get much time to play around with new toys until after then. I have enough trouble finding time for your hour long videos, which I have to split into 2 or 3 segments to watch. Thanks for the quality material you guys make. It always makes my day, when I see that you have a new video posted. Cheers.
