CARTIER SANTOS = ROLEX OYSTER PERPETUAL KILLER

  • Yup. I said it and I stand by it. I think the Cartier Santos is the OYSTER PERPETUAL KILLER. Now, at first glance, it doesn't seem all that obvious. Different case shapes, different overall vibes. But when you like actually take a moment to think about it... they are actually quite comparable to be the TOP Go Anywhere Do Anything watch.
    The biggest reasons why I think the Santos is the OP killer is:
    - Comparable Specs --- great movements, 100m water resistance, hacking seconds
    - Versatile --- They both can be quite dressy and quite sporty. They aren't out of place in either environment! I'd say the Santos is more of a dressy sports watch, and the OP is a sporty watch that you can dress up
    - but the Santos is actually AVAILABLE. YOU CAN ACTUALLY JUST LIKE... GET IT. Which is nice. ;)
    There's some big differences as well. But we talk about all of it in the video.
    What do you think. Could the Santos be the OP Killer?! OR is that the dumbest thing you've ever heard? Tell us everything in the comments!

    I own them both and I give the edge to the Santos. It’s far more versatile than people think, people calling it a dress watch likely have never tried it on/owned it. Since Cartier upgraded the WR to 100m in 2018, it’s an excellent daily watch. The finer details on the Santos are superior to the Rolex, imo. Nobody outside of the watch community knows what it is so you won’t be getting any attention (good thing).
    The tech in the Santos bracelet is simply a bonus. The ease of resizing or swapping bracelets is ingenious.

    I'm a bit of a Rolex fanboy and never really considered owning a Cartier watch.
    A couple of weeks ago my wife gave me the medium size Santos de Cartier for my birthday after seeing it in your November video (she's a HUGE fan of yours!).
    I must say that the Santos was a pleasant surprise and I love it for all the reasons you mention with the added bonus that it was a gift from my gorgeous wife and therefore......absolutely priceless!

    I love, love, LOVE my Cartier Santos medium. Although I own a bunch of high-end pieces from the likes of Rolex, Omega, JLC….even Patek, AP, and ALS, I wear my Santos more than any other watch I own. It’s just that good!!!!

    The four Gringa criteria for a great watch: history (heritage), fashion (aesthetics), engineering (and innovation), and design. In my humble opinion, the Cartier wins at least 3 out of four. Thanks, Brittany, great video🙂👍.

    It's a pretty good idea. The two watches are definitely similar in terms of specs, toughness, etc. but I think the two watches are looking in different directions. The OP feels like a very nice version of a no-frills, working man's watch (and at one point years ago was priced like it) while the Santos has always been about exuding the sense of luxury that a Cartier should.

    FYI the Santos grey and black dials are fully lumed. Totally agree. Great vid. I have a Santos grey dial and I’m SRSLY considering getting a white dial in medium this year too 😳 I have the factory black rubber and grey alligator strap plus the metal bracelet. It’s three completely different watches. The OP can’t compete with that. Add in that the Cartier was the first actual mens wristwatch, the first pilots watch, 110+ year heritage, etc. Last thing, Cartier as a brand and Cartier SA’s treat you amazingly well.

  • @markedfortime
    @markedfortime 2 года назад +10

    I made the mistake of looking into Cartier...which has never been of interest to me. Oh crap! Now I have a Santos in my watch list. I love everything about it but for two issues...the polished bezel is a scratch magnet and none of the screws line up...both, I think I can ignore because everything else with the Santos is freaking amazing!!! If I get...strike that...when I get a Santos, I might pick up a spare bezel that I can brush to match the rest of the watch. That way, I could go polished or brushed.
    I'm a convert and didn't realize it was even happening...its like Cartier is a cult. You don't realize you're sucked in until it's too late!
    You are right...the OP is a typical watch design. Nothing too special. The Santos has clear design language. A lot of innovation. For me it's like a Panerai, where design language is critical and easily recognizable.
    For me, the Santos crushes the OP hands down.
    Does the fact that I've seen the Cartier light mean I'm upping my watch game?

    Born in the industrial revolution, before the Rolex. Its cues of industrial screws the fabric that holds the world together. The curve the pure design. Also something that many don’t talk about it screams romance. The romance of flying, the risktaking of new adventures. Like an old movie it shares a history. The Santos is timeless. You have to have one on your wrist to experience it in 1988. I work for Cartier and I got the privilege of trying on the 18 karat gold Santos and although I could never afford that at the time it was heavenly. Many couples also pair it with a love bracelet. Another fabulous design with screws.

  • @Flashlegz
    @Flashlegz 2 года назад +12

    The Santos just stands out among most watches, very unique, incredible finishing and very good value when compared to a Rolex as you get the integrated bracelet with quick change strap and links. Then you get a choice of leather strap to go with that and incredibly the two tone in Japan costs pretty much equal to the explorer as there's a slim chance of being able to get an explorer at retail price. I want to get an explorer at retail price but it's not easy to get and I really don't think it's worth paying more for such a plain looking watch, don't get me wrong, I WANT to buy an explorer but it doesn't offer the same value as the Santos.

    • @rafaeloliva6425
      @rafaeloliva6425 Месяц назад

      I don't see the allure of the explorer or the OP, the most boring watches in the Rolex collection. I own a DJ41 and a ceramic Submariner and both are amazing. But at The Santo's price point it simply unbeatable.

But it was a tad too small for me , I just saw the large sized In SS with silver dial. It was very beautiful but my family didn’t like it . Oh well. I am a Rolex freak so I would buy a Rolex before buying santos . But the Cartier santos has been back of my head . They got the sizes prefect now . "...you can't get it!" says it all.
    I like them both, and one day (who knows) perhaps I will have them both. They share a whittled down, no nonsense, wrist appeal. My medium Santos stands up across the room; unless you happen to have the eyes of a Venezuelan fruit bat the Rolex has too many similar and competitive 'black-dial' derivatives. A significant plus for the Santos de Cartier is the instantly interchangeable strap....mine is navy blue and transforms the look and the feel to something altogether more sophisticated.......which would I wear if I owned both?

    I totally agree with this sentiment. I think the Cartier has more character than the Rolex. Ultimately I think this will be an emotional decision rather than any kind of comparison of price or specs or anything. If one style does it for you, you’re going to go that way I think. Both watches do sit in that same kinda area you describe, to my mind.

    Shout out for the Canada cup!! Love the Santos but I think it is a completely different look then the Oyster Perpetual. Not sure I would wear it as an every day. Since you can't get an OP, I would jump to an Omega Aqua Terra to fill that every day void.

      @Will Harris It's mad how fashion changes. For the majority of the 20th century a man's watch was around 35mm and often smaller again and women's watches required an electron microscope to read😂. Even chronographs were nearly always under 40mm. The first move up in size was in the early 70's when quartz first came in, mostly because those early quartz movements were very large so the watches had to be. By the 80's when the tech got better and smaller the sizes went down again. For dress watches, digitals could be large with all the extra features being stuffed in. Tool watches were also rare back in the day. Unless you actually used one for work. Even then most had a dress watch outside of that. The most common man's watch of the 20th century was a gold(or gold plated) dress watch around 35mm. Horribly unfashionable today of course.

    • @MrGrentch
      @MrGrentch 2 года назад

      @Will Harris That's part of it Will but overall in my humble it's far more to do with fashion and what mechanical watches(mostly for men) have become; In a very simplistic sense jewellry that ticks. Bigger is better to show off in life(rarely) and to the self same WIS on the 'Gram etc. The fashion went nuts around ten years ago with huge being in for a time, but it's settled down since. Panerai were in that mix, with 'limited editions' AD waiting lists, strong used prices, but pretty much nobody talks about them nowadays. IWC Big Pilots were in for a while too and when do you see them today? Fashion.

    • @MrGrentch
      @MrGrentch 2 года назад

      @Will Harris Only problem with that will is that many if not most of the _actual_ tool watches worn by _actual_ divers and pilots/navigators were usually sub 40mm and often more like 35mm. The first what we'd call a diver watch today the BP 50Fathoms was unusual because it was 42mm, the Rolex sub that copied their format was 37mm. The very first specific dive watch was a 1930's Omega that was a tiny tank stlyle. The first 'waterproof' watch the Tavennes 'Submarine' designed for actual submariners in 1917 was 35mm. In WW2 the pilots/navigator watches tended to follow an allied/axis trend difference. The German stuff was usually larger(55mm in the extreme case of B-Uhrs) the Allied much smaller. For other toolwatches like issued military watches the men storming the Normandy beaches were wearing sub 35mm watches as were the men defending the same beaches. After the war the first watch the US military divers used the Buships(various brands)were sub 35mm. Form seemed to follow function well enough.
      Today where men's mechanical watches are not nearly so functional and are a fashion/luxury item where the closest a dive watch gets is a morning shower and a pilots watch a Ryanair flight, the function the form follows is fashion and luxury and larger sizes are almost entirely down to that. That and I suspect a sideorder of many of these luxury watches are bought by men past the first flush of youth and the eyes aren't so great, so bigger is better here too. 😁

    Britt,…fast forward to 2023/2024 and taking into consideration the Santos de Cartier Large Grey with ADLC bezel. I think that this model takes the Santos well past the OP. First, the ADLC bezel addresses the “scratch magnet” knock on the Santos. Second, there is luminance on the dial/hands. Third, the watch comes with a black rubber strap that can be easily changed our using the quick switch system. It’s like you get two watches for the price of one! Fourth,…the anti-magnetism rating of the Santos is amazing. The versatility of this model is amazing. The OP can’t hang with this model.

  • @ronrush
    @ronrush 2 года назад +13

    Agree with you fully. I love the OP but with Rolex turning against its own real fans (or even newbies) by allowing the grey market to lead it by its nose, it has really become uncool. The fact that the grey market is selling it at 400% above value has made a classy Rolex look so vulgar now, like how the nouveau rich would pay anything just to grab an entry level watch, which simply is a turn off.
    On the other hand, Cartier maintains its class and prestige, walk into any AD or its boutique, you can still get a timeless Santos and have a very positive and pleasant purchasing process.
    OP is already dead in my eyes. Even when Rolex suddenly announces they have unlimited stock I won’t even bother getting one because I associate it with scalpers and vulgar street transactions.

    In interesting video Gringa. I really like the Santos (medium) and this has been on my list for quite some time. I was at an AD (not Cartier or Rolex) where one of the sales staff had a Santos (large) that looked incredible. You could not mistake it for anything else. You could argue that it's more bling in appearance compared to the OP and that for my pea size brain using both active brain cells that occasionally (actually quite rare) fire a neuron tells me they are too different to be compared. The Santos is definitely more dressy and stands out where the OP is more versatile. The OP can fly under most radars looking more like a regular watch. I would love to have both.

I've worn a Casio W-168 for almost 3 months now and I've more or less recovered from the disappointment called Cartier.

    The Santos is a sensational classic watch that I like at least as much as the RLX OP. And yes - it is an OP killer! Because I can buy it from Cartier today and just wear it. And not wait until I reach retirement age.
    I'm also annoyed by the approach of having to buy other watches from the concessionaire before I'm given the grace of being able to purchase a Rolex. I don't marry the hunchbacked sister in the hope of being able to marry my dream woman 5 years later.
    And there is one more point in favor of the Cartier in gold: it stands for a class of its own. Unfortunately, Rolex also stands for pimps and prole. No front.

On the first click you change the time, job done, the watch is not broken, only at the second click you change the date, when you can break your watch!! Omega is "date/time" architecture is fairly good, because at click one you change the time at one hour intervals, or at the second click you change time in an analogue fashion. I like that above all it is the real characteristics and not the subjective elements that make up a bubble that dictate whether a watch is good or not, but; perhaps it guides us to others?
    Three hands, date window, 100-meter water resistance, in-house movement; very strong containers appear there;
    -Omega Aqua Terra
    -Chopard LUC 1937 Classic
    -Breguet Marine Big Date

    -Bulgari Octo Finissimo
    -Czapek Antartique
    -Horage Multiply
    -ZENITH Delfy
    -Grand Seiko Heritage Automatic
    -Glashutte Original Seventy....
    But I also see why so much about the Cartier Santos; everything begins in particular characteristics;
    The Cartier Santos de Cartier without a date window is a contender for the Rolex Oyster Peroetual and the Cartier Santos de Cartier with a date window competes with the Rolex Datejust.
    Both stories start at the same time; with a brave young lady swimmer and with a young Brazilian aviator...

Goes well with my uniform as the blings look right. Plus Being the first Pilots watch, some history on its shoulders. Only drawback is, it doesn't have luminousness. So when I do long haul flights, I can't see the time in the dark when I'm resting. Other than that, any day way better than a ROLEX. Plus Currently ROLEX acting like Patek...I'm done with them. Have to beg, plead spend more $$ to get a Rolex. Rolex is loosing a huge fan base. other watches offering much better value.

    I own three OP39 and bought the Santos Medium 10 days ago. I’m with you 99% except the way it would be the OP killer is a difficult thing to say. Many (men) won’t go near a Santos because they’re not comfortable with their masculinity and have to have the Rolex traditional look. I don’t think a watch can be a killer of another unless they look similar and has enough of the same audience. As for me, it’s more exciting to wear. With the link system I had to choose too tight or a bit loose which I hate to do. The Santos is the only watch I still love when it slips a bit. It looks cool hanging so slightly, giving it that ‘laid back vibe’ and wrist presence is off the charts (although no one has said anything about it 😂). One of my most exciting purchases! Still love my OPs though even if they are more boring.

    Agreed, if given the choice between an OP and my Santos large opaline white dial. It's the Santos all day. I do prefer the screw down crown on almost all Rolex models, which is something the Santos at this price point should have if it's intended to be a 100 meter watch. My ceramic bezel Submariner holds up to daily wear so much better than the Santos. Tha main downside to the Santos besides not having a screw down crown, is its extremely scratch prone bezel. The Santo's ability to quickly switch to alligator black strap and classic white dial makes it a much more versatile dress than my 41mm Azzurro blue DJ.
    The mere fact that the Santos is in the conversation with pricier Rolex models does without a doubt demonstrate the exceptional value the Santos affords.
    Buying a used Cartier is an even greater value. Which is not the case for sought-after Rolex Models.
    The Santos has earned a coveted spot in my watch rotation.
    Enjoy wearing which ever makes you feel happy, and enjoy them in in good health.

    Cartier over any Rolex any time.
    Cartier watches are just pure class, no exception, meanwhile Rolex are slowly becoming expensive tacky watches, bought by nouveaux riches to show off, such like Hublot.
