I really wish I could watch Bob Brozman. Musical genius, yes...but hearing him sing about "your children are hardened, they do not feel..." sends shivers up my spine.
Jason W how was that creepy? it was a metophore for being soft. thats not creepy. alot of fathers do that. and the hardened children he may not have even wrote that. also its seems like hes saying the kid had a rough life so much doesnt affect him, hows that creepy its real life
thanks Andrew My thoughts are: this sort of doc should be on PBS every week so we know the genius out there. These are good guys deserving of our respect.
I was a bit under the weather today and was browsing the internet when I stumbled upon this gem. I just took delivery of a baritone tricone from National and I thoroughly enjoyed seeing in this video how it was made. I have owned a Gibson Dobro for several years, but there's nothing like a National. I especially like the contribution of Doug MacLeod, but what a great compilation of resonator guitar players to compliment this documentary of the making of a guitar. I have no doubt I'll be viewing this again from time to time just to inspire my creative juices. It made my day. Thanks so much for this posting.
This is awesome! I wanted to learn about how resonator guitars are made. Boom! Done. Killer footage of the National factory and insider details from the makers. Bonus to hear the stories and music of the featured guitarists.RIP Bob Brozman...what loss. Thank you so much for making this full-length doc available to stream. You rock!
I love how Mike Dowling focuses not on bring impressive (which I feel Bob Brozman absolutely does focus on), but on playing well, which he absolutely achieves.
Drove through town there once in early 2000s. Knew National was in town somewhere. Was there on a weekend. Guess I knew the address because I drove up to this building and figured it was the place. Nobody around. Finally looked in a dumpster and saw some stuff that confirmed it was National. It was better than seeing the Grand Canyon the first time. Unfortunately there weren't any slightly blemished guitars in the dumpster.
Thanks for noticing. There seems to have been an encoding problem that I cannot get around. So, I put up the last few minutes as part 2 or 2. I appreciate your kind words, as well.
For those of you commenting on Doug Macleod your so off base. First, the man is keeping the old school Delta Blues alive how many guys are playing this music. There isnt big money in it so it has to be about the passion for the music. lastly watch some of his live songs he has a wonderful personality. I have met him several times and he is a nice man. Catfish Keith is also a nice guy bought a tricone from him. What is troubling to me is all these Bob Brozman fans who still support the man after it comes to light he is a child molester it almost makes it difficult to watch the movie knowing that. RIP for a man that took the cowards way out instead of facing his accusers.
the guy at the start is dead wrong about the dynamic range of an electric guitar. as much as i love and want a resonator guitar, they cannot match the amount of tones you can get from an electric guitar. an electric can go from a whisper to a full on explosion.
I agree 100%. However I just got my first resonator...and it is mesmerizing to play...I don't want to play an electric right now I'm having so much fun playing the reso.........
Michael Harvill no no, i understood it. i think it's you who needs a re-read, because what i said isn't complicated. the resonator IS the amp in a resonator guitar. it's what gives it it's volume and tone....same with an electric guitar and it's amp. it doesn't matter if an electric guitar uses an amp....it's an ELECTRIC GUITAR....electricity is in the name, obviously it will need an amp. that's what the instrument IS. the amplifier is the actual instrument, the "guitar" part of an electric guitar is just your way of making the electricity achieve different notes, kind of how a midi controller is used with a computer. saying it's dynamic range doesn't count because it's using an amp and without it it would be quiet is a really pointless argument. a resonator with the resonator and body removed (which acts like an acoustic amplifier) is pretty quiet too.
Bob Brozman forever be at peace - the world is a more crap place without you. Still sadly missed, - untimely departure & hope you're in a slide guitar heaven somewhere - fat loss, slim chance, numb world, FuBaR.
At the 1:20:00 mark, I can NOT get over how that man fingerpicks without using his index finger! This is a fascinating documentary. Thanks for uploading it!
Tuco: This world is still a place where people need to earn some money at least to pay for some food and a home to live in. Also i live in an area with very little bandwith. So streaming is not an option.
Sascha Lenze Smart TVs aren't that much more expensive than any other TVs, and I was talking about watching RUclips vids on it, like you just did. You had enough bandwidth to watch this vid, I presume.
+DadGumit Man DVDs can be obtained at-cost from aquaplus.tv Of interest, a sequel is in the works. Higher budgets, the addition of a few more atypical traditional instruments and better performance space. Looks like a 2017 release date at the moment.
Does anyone know what song is playing in the background during most of this movie? It starts at 33 minutes in. I cant find it anywhere. Sounds like a Mississippi John Hurt song. Please help! Thanks
Hey I believe It's a john fahey track ( possibly off of Death Chants and Other Plantation Favorites) but also very likely off of the Transfiguration of Blind Joe Death album, Hope it helps, in turn if you've never listened to any john fahey I urge you to explore forth in to his music
To me it sounds like 'Old Country Rock' but played with slide. I heard Stefan Grossman play it years ago on a record but without slide. It definitely sounds like that song.
you should listen to his last release, fire in the mind , that came out in 2012, it sounds like he tapped something his athletic playing might have over shadowed on all his other work, sadly he died a couple days ago.
I don't feel any authenticity to Doug MacLeod...Which is ironic as he keeps prattling on about honesty. The other three guys are astounding though! Very interesting film!
I think I may have finally discovered the worst imitation of a bluesman I have ever seen...................Doug MacLeod at the 1.05 mark.........................OUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCH!!!!!!
Is the 5 minute man Phoebe's guitar teacher? Hippie cat.,,,, Hippie cat,,, What drugs have they been feeding you..? A few examples of, just because you can, doesn't mean you should
I really wish I could watch Bob Brozman. Musical genius, yes...but hearing him sing about "your children are hardened, they do not feel..." sends shivers up my spine.
Or when he says 'Stroke the baby's cheek'.
Jesus...why'd you have to point THAT out? Yucky.
To emphasis on your point.
He creeped me out before I even learned about ... y'know
Yeah...something was always a little weird...
Jason W how was that creepy? it was a metophore for being soft. thats not creepy. alot of fathers do that. and the hardened children he may not have even wrote that. also its seems like hes saying the kid had a rough life so much doesnt affect him, hows that creepy its real life
This has absolutely changed my outlook on how to play a resonator. Thanks for posting. Great movie, great music.
Pretty sweet tune by Mike Dowling at 38.08. Love hearing resonators without fingerpicks - they often have a real dynamic mellow sound.
thanks Andrew

Bob Brozman was such an inspiring and curious guy. Great film.
Best movie I've seen in a long while! Thanks!

Every time I watch this, I can feel resonator guitar makes my days when I was lonesome that's for sure.

Thanks for posting. Very enjoyable and informative.
Absolutely fascinating to watch how you make them all. Don't know who the guitarists are, but seeing the manufacturing process was great to see!
the guy at the start is dead wrong about the dynamic range of an electric guitar. as much as i love and want a resonator guitar, they cannot match the amount of tones you can get from an electric guitar. an electric can go from a whisper to a full on explosion.
Couldnt agree more. He must listen to some shitty guitarists to make a statement like that.
I agree 100%. However I just got my first resonator...and it is mesmerizing to play...I don't want to play an electric right now I'm having so much fun playing the reso.........
Seriously, wtf was that guy listening to?
Michael Harvill the amp is part of the instrument, so he's wrong. on a resonator guitar, the resonator is the amp. same thing, but different package.
Michael Harvill no no, i understood it. i think it's you who needs a re-read, because what i said isn't complicated. the resonator IS the amp in a resonator guitar. it's what gives it it's volume and tone....same with an electric guitar and it's amp. it doesn't matter if an electric guitar uses an amp....it's an ELECTRIC GUITAR....electricity is in the name, obviously it will need an amp. that's what the instrument IS. the amplifier is the actual instrument, the "guitar" part of an electric guitar is just your way of making the electricity achieve different notes, kind of how a midi controller is used with a computer. saying it's dynamic range doesn't count because it's using an amp and without it it would be quiet is a really pointless argument. a resonator with the resonator and body removed (which acts like an acoustic amplifier) is pretty quiet too.

i THINK , I Need a Resonator Guitar ....
OMG , VERY VERY INTRESTING Doku !!!
if you are planning on making a sequel id highly recommend looking at mule resonators the make a beautiful sounding resonator.
i love this!!!! fantastic, all of it!
Nice. Thank you ...

I was hooked 2:20 seconds in... Holy sh*t...
no Baby Gramps?! that guy IS a resonator!
good call
fascinating stuff !
thanks for share !
That Bob Brozman tho!
It seems to end abruptly? I'm guessing that was near enough the end and I only missed a min or two of the documentary. Enjoyed it thanks.
I can really dig where your coming from Trevor - subbed :) QC
Bob Brozman, extremely talented musician, absolutely unlistenable.
Would really love to get a copy of this as a DVD. If there is a chance to get one please let me know.

What is the tune played by Catfish Keith from 10:48 ?
And, what is its tuning please ?

+René Bleu Its a Blind WIllie Johnson song

i think its 'good morning judge' by furry lewis.
The tune is "Poor Boy Long Ways From Home." John Fahey recorded 2 versions of it on "The Legend of Blind Joe Death" album (the 1996 remaster).
Parts of it early on sound similar to the old song "Guitar Rag."
is it just me, or is anyone else thinking that Groucho Marx is a helluva musician?
I would like to purchase one of these DVDS please
Any one have any great blues players that use resonators to recommend?
Where did you get this, and where can I get it on DVD? Thanks!
RIP Mr. Young
you should listen to his last release, fire in the mind , that came out in 2012, it sounds like he tapped something his athletic playing might have over shadowed on all his other work, sadly he died a couple days ago.
Nice, really could have used a second camera to capture the moments.
someone knows the song the guy is playing starting around 3min55sec? Please!!
Cheers!
Love Bob, but what does the first 3 minutes of the movie have to do with the rest?
Bob had some parts in National Guitars, that’s the reason you obviously see him every time around. It is called lobbying ;-)
Music sample introduction to the artist interviewed and he talks about National resonators
How could someone "Dislike" the guitar?
divine!!
anyone know if this is available on dvd?
Bob Brozman looks a litlle like Tomy Chong?
Or am I the only one seeing that?
where's Roy?
Hes right bout feel
unlistenable? wow, i dont get that one...
Holy shit that first guy is ridiculous....I've been listening to the wrong people
bob brozman... he was incredible. ...lucky enough to have caught him live a dozen or so times here in Australia
+Blake Hunter Bob Brozman is amazing, was amazing
What song at about 25: 40 minutes
I don't feel any authenticity to Doug MacLeod...Which is ironic as he keeps prattling on about honesty. The other three guys are astounding though! Very interesting film!
The guy singing & playing at 58min mark is fantastic. Is that his original what is the song?
RIP Bob Brozman..... so sad
