Kim Thayil is one of those guitarists that you can pick from any song without knowing it; his style was/is distinct and perfect for this type of music. He's hardly mentioned in guitarist conversations, but should be. As what you said about Cornell's voice, it does sound that he wasn't quite in his wheelhouse just yet, but when 'Badmotorfinger' came out, he really nailed it.
