  • Why do we see the Mario canon as so inconsistent? Sean and I get to the bottom of things.
    On March 6, 2023, I made a video essay about Mario canon inconsistencies - all of which were immediately compellingly argued to be not inconsistencies at all by one @Seandwalsh3, the pre-eminent Mario scholar on the planet. Now, Sean has joined me to set the record straight and dive deep into the Mario canon. Almost 3 hours later, you’re sure to leave this video with a new perspective on Mario and his adventures - one that, at least for me, is nothing short of revelatory. Down the Warp Pipe we go.

    Thank you by clearing all of this stuff! Thanks for showing how there really are a lot of consistency across the Mario canon, I love how they tell these stories indirectly.
    This video is severally underrated, and a lot more in comparison to the previous video. You also have too few subscribers Wooley, you deserve more.
    And also thanks for Seandwalsh for providing all of his insight! He is just someone that takes al lot of this seriously and also in a relaxed way, so cool.

    about 50 minutes in, it's mentioned how DK was Mario's pet (and then a tangent about pets happens, lol).
    My 2 cents on this---- I like to see it as a sort of Shaggy & Scooby Doo sort of thing. Where like, yeah, DK is Mario's pet, but it's actually more like they're roommates or something. That's my headcanon at least. I have this whole idea in my head of Mario, Luigi, Pauline, and Donkey Kong just hanging out, and it's quite amusing to me.

      _Donkey Kong 1994 Wonder Life Special APE Official Nintendo Guide_ story synopsis leans into this angle. Donkey Kong's relationship with Mario is described as more than just a pet, but they were best friends who always played and hung out with each other -- until Pauline came into the picture and Mario stopped hanging out with DK for her instead, which got him mad.

    Only a quarter of the way through the video so far (it’s great!), but even as a big Mario lore enthusiast these past couple years, I always assumed a lot of stuff besides the basic facts was just… fan speculation. That the actual devs weren’t thinking it through to the level that we are and that it just happens to fit together well. While I still think that’s partially the case (like, idk how much they’re considering the game and watch games, for example), this video has really made me realize that there is more going on behind the scenes than I gave them credit for.

    I really love this video! A bunch of stuff I really adore about Mario canon came up here.
    One thing I do want to add because its funny: the pets thing gets even more uncomfortable. Joe, from WarioWare, says that he is one of only two working dogs in his family- the rest are pets. He implies that people would think it was harder for him to become a manager because people saw him as a dog, implying some weird societal stigma or something? I'm... not quite sure, but there have also been references to eating Bloopers and the like, who are also intelligent.....
    ...so maybe don't... really think about it.

    I think it’s now, more than ever, that the people behind the media we take in have more thought put behind it than ever before. “It’s for kids” feels like a copout answer from an uninterested party in most of my personal experiences. Granted, I don’t think everyone should have to go down a rabbit hole and fact check to make sure the information they found is correct. A lot of my knowledge on this topic is definitely from the same videos loosely referenced by you two give or take as well as my own ruminations on the subject. Honestly, it’s really cool to hear that someone else came to similar conclusions that wishes are a very integral part of how things work in the Mario series in more ways than what’s initially to be believed. While, it’s still a lot of fan theory, it’s got a good base to back it up.
    Going back to “it’s for kids,” I’d go so far to say that the inverse is more true to life. Channels like Athena P. show that even something as simple as kid shows have conscious efforts to keep consistency within the brand. It’s a hook, or what I like to call “X-factor” based off of one person’s explanation of the CoD Zombies story and why it stood out amongst its contemporaries.
    Last year I watched Hotwheels’ Highway35 and its sequel series Acceleracers for the first time since 2003 and 2005 respectively. I was flooded with memories of why I loved those movies so much as a kid and I remembered why it left an impact on me. You look YT right now and people are writing essays about these movies and the subtleties of them. It’s astounding and I can confidently say that I have a new favorite thing I can talk about. Mario is no different.
    There’s something I learned when I decided to look into speculative evolution thanks to All Tomorrows. It had something to do with dinosaurs and what scientists are always constantly trying to circumvent. It’s the aspect of learning a “fact” for the very first time whether or not it’s actually true. It’s the whole reason why dinosaurs with feathers is controversial. My generation and many before me have grown to know dinosaurs with scaly exteriors and to think that’s wrong now. “Oh, so all that time I spent learning about this thing is suddenly wrong now?” Kind of a sunken cost fallacy thing. However, the world is not stagnant and things can change. Just like how Spinosaurus changes every month or so. Seriously, look it up.
    Lastly, I’d like to point out that Mario is fiction. What I believe, is that if you can take something out of it positively, canon or not, that you should hold on to it. It can be a disappointment that say something like the average mainline Pokemon game journey no longer feels like you’re this nobody kid going against the odds to reach the top, but rather a chosen one in something like ORAS. Like, the thing that got you into something is no longer there. The X-factor is gone. I think that says something about you that you even considered it in the first place. There should be no shame in sharing what you liked about something. At the end of the day, if that’s what helps make you like something more, than do it anyway. Who cares what anyone says so long as you can recognize that it’s your own head cannon. Remember, it’s what makes you you.
    I hope this helped someone or validated anyone in any way. Keep your chin up.

      the meandering nature of its overarching narratives and the way some things wouldn't get followed up on till way later worked really well for me personally, it felt very authentic to real life and how a lot of things in your life don't necessarily get "wrapped up" neatly or quickly. i also love the show's use of dramatic irony and letting the audience know things that the characters don't necessarily know, like with the episode Evergreen, jake's origins, the end of the lemonhope 2-parter, etc.. the world and lore therein feel very alive as a result imo! @@rustyshackelford4224

    LOVE the parts where you talk about Adventure Time! it's so fun to see the two of you realizing you're both AT fans in like the same way (same way that I am, too). It's my absolute favorite show and the way the world builds itself up over time is no small part of that.
    I've also played with the idea of thinking about Mario lore as if it was like that but it was always just kinda a silly what-if exercise, because "of course the folks at nintendo don't care about it like I do, right?" This was an eye opening experience for me, great video all around!

    As for series that are canon to the Mario universe, what about Banjo-Kazooie, Conker’s Bad Fur Day, and Rhythm Heaven? I’d argue the first 2 are definitely in the same universe on the basis that Banjo Conker and Tiptup debuted in Diddy Kong Racing, which is indisputably in the Donkey Kong universe, which is the same as the Mario universe, and then later were in games of their own fleshing out their lore. As opposed to something like crossover characters in Mario Kart, where it’s characters from existing series making a cameo in a different series, it’s just existing characters in one series being fleshed out in their own subseries a la Yoshi and Wario. And then for Rhythm Heaven, it and Wario Ware are constantly referencing each other so I can see the argument they take place in the same universe, but I also understand the argument that these are just meant to be fun references.

    Something mario kart 8's wii u version i believe to be actually be somewhat cannon to is animal crossing. I mean think about it multiple links exist in animal crossing shown by wolf link and the multiple link outfits in new leaf. That and isabelle has the city tripper in her camper van also in new leaf. The reason I specify Wii U is that splatoon is only some form of media in animal crossing. Of course all the mario items present in animal crossing are of note aswell.
    "A Splatoon superfan, Inkwell's decided to leave his past behind and create a new identity as a squid. It'd be going better if his eight legs weren't so obvious."
    "Fresh from Dragon Roost Island, it's Medli of the Rito tribe! Her fight skills are a little shaky, so she gets from dungeon to dungeon with her camper van."

    there's something really interesting about how sean repeatedly treats mario and luigi and paper mario as if they were the same canon in the same world, completely despite mario and luigi: paper jam

    • @pdizzleparker5556
      @pdizzleparker5556 Год назад +5

      The real world and the paper world are parallel, as in they are exactly the same except for the fact that one is made of paper and the other isn't. Real Mario and Paper Mario have lived nearly identical lives, and have had the same experiences (outside of Paper Jam, which was the only time the two worlds desynced).

    I think the timeline would be better if it didn't assign specific points on the line when the order is a little ambiguous. You could give a bracket to show the range of areas some games go in. It might be a bit visually cluttered that way, and I understand the preference for a more definitive chronology, but I think it would be a lot more informative.

    • @seandwalsh3
      @seandwalsh3 Год назад +3

      While I’d love for that to be the case it’s not at all feasible when it comes to making a readable graphic. This is why the descriptions are there, so you can tell what game placements are more definitive and which ones are based more on theory or have a bit of leeway.
      While I’m of course happy for people to read the timeline at face value, my hope is that it can be a resource for people to better understand how the games connect and inform their own perspective, much like how the Zelda timeline is. I’m also always looking for feedback and updating the timeline with new points to be more accurate. For example, I’m actually moving Mario the Juggler later today as new evidence has come up.
