I know it would be way more work, but the points made in this video are so good and I'm sure it would have way more views if there was visuals.
thank you! yeah, honestly i was just incredibly burnt out on video editing lmao
@@TuckerWooley tbh i like the no visuals sometimes they distract me w o me realizing then i have to keep rewinding bc i missed what was said it’s nice to be able to zone out or do other stuff and know i won’t miss anything by not watching w my eyes
@@mikeycomito3045 that’s also a problem i have!
I had the opposite problem interestingly. I kept trying to tab back in the video and see what was being talked about since it's been so long since I've seen the show, and I can't remember what a lot of the characters looked like. Kept tabbing in, remembering there's no video, and googling the characters instead @@mikeycomito3045
Way higher risk of getting flagged with lots of visuals though :)
I think one of the most haunting adventure time scenes is when young marceline is standing in front of the burning world after the bomb goes off. There’s just something so overwhelming about it that really adds to the dread for me.
Gunther was hinted to be evil way back in season 2 episode 1 "It Came from the Nightosphere", when Hunson says Gunther is the most evel thing he's ever seen, and fails to suck her (?) soul.
isn’t that cool?? one of my favorite follow-throughs in the whole show
@@TuckerWooley it's super cool. I love how AT doesn't just let those sort of things go. My favorite example is when they retroactively fixed an animation mistake with the episode "Crossover".
@@HughvanZyl yesssss!! i meant to put that one in the video, it’s a really good example of how much they care
That SLAP though! Low key one of the funniest moments to me
Just something to point out, Cinnamon Bun ISNT on the spectrum and I don’t think is supposed to be read as such. In the very first episode he has a totally different voice, before hitting his head REALLY HARD, and from that point on, he’s the “Half-Baked” Cinnamon Bun we’re used to
Totally agree. I think the point they were trying to get across is the rampant ableism inherent to the AT lore. The "half-baked" representation is a poor creative choice since traumatic brain injuries are already stigmatized.
maybe im way off here but i kinda disagree with the sentiment that CB getting “fixed” is problematic. i guess the way I see it is that he’s a representation that even with a traumatic brain injury or “birth defect,” he isn’t just entirely useless. those things don’t make a person a worthless background character always to be laughed at or made fun of or looked down on. it took time but eventually he found a place that really suited him, and a situation that brought out the best in him. and people with whatever speculative conditions aren’t just dummies, they can find a place, do a thing, be really good at that thing. maybe the fact that the show makes it seem like you have to do those things to have value is the problematic part? maybe i didn’t think this thru and the show /is/ just ableist. idk.
As someone who grew up with a tough relationship with my father and had an extremely close relationship with a brother I lost in my teens, watching adventure time as an adult really hit me hard. I actually avoided watching the show for a decade because it was so tied to my brother in my mind.
This entire exploration was really well done and I really appreciate your exploration into grief as a theme in the show. Kudos to you:)
thank you so much, that’s so meaningful! kudos to you!! i can imagine how all those things would make the show painful to experience. sometimes that pain can be profound, sometimes it can just be painful, lol! i’m glad it resonated with you in a positive way.
Hey man, you got a few tears out of me with this. Thanks! It’s nice to come back to Adventure Time every once in a while. It’s one of the greats.
thank you so much!
When I first experienced adventure time I absorbed it sort of passively, engaging with the characters and stories but not wading to deep into the themes until one day I looked back at the sheer magnitude of the show and the experiences it gave me and it hit me like a truck. This video essay was like standing on a highway and having that truck be accompanied by a whole lot of other traffic to metaphorically run over my heart multiple times. It was fantastic, thanks for making this, its lead to a much greater understanding of one of my favorite shows!
Definatly subscribing.
thank you so much, thats so meaningful!!!
i loved being able to analyze and rethink parts of a show i've loved for years. it was great to hear your persective and theories on the show. the amount of time and work you put into this video really shows. i can tell how much love you have for this show. this video is so well written. your personal anecdotes were heartfelt and touching, especially the ones about boo, which brought tears to my eyes. thank you for creating this. it was a breath of fresh air :)
thank you so much, that really really means a lot. 😭💖
wasn't gonna leave a comment but I literally started crying as soon as a saw a picture of Boo at the end of the video. Boo looks almost exactly like my old dog that my family had to put down during my first year of college. Idk it just made me kinda emotional. That was also a time where I got very nostalgic for childhood, and I started watching more cartoons in early college (and consequently rewatching adventure time). Anyways, I really connected with your interpretation of the themes of adventure time!
thank you so much for sharing this! i’m glad it connected in a good way.
such an enjoyable video definitely now one of my new favorite adventure time video essays. I could listen to you deconstruct my favorite comfort show for hours! so thx ! subbed, cant wait to see more
thank you so much, that really means a lot!!! 😭
great video. Adventure Time really is the TV show that's been with me my entire life. i'm someone who struggles a lot with anxiety and irrational fears regarding, among others, the wellbeing of my family, friends and pets and with you sharing your own feelings, thoughts and stories alongside and relating them to Adventure Time made me emotional and gave me a broader appreciation for the show. i really appreciate media that doesn't brush off those fears as "hysterics" and your video gave me some, ig reassurance now feeling that the show i grew up with can, in a way hold my hand so to speak, through these struggles. i also kinda feel as if this video has given me some understanding of me? maybe? idk but i feel like i understand why this show has always stuck with me, so thank you. great video
@@user-sd7ml2nb7x i’m so so glad to hear that, thank you so much! those are the reasons i made it!
Loved the video. Just saw it recommended and i wasnt prepared for the emotional roller-coaster that was this video. I liked how easy it was to follow along, even though i just had it in the background. Keep up the great work 👍
thank you, that means a lot!!!
I loved this so much, and I resonate a lot with the characters going through stuff as I went through it. The new content is so mature and it truly has grown up with the audience. I’m so excited to hear what you have to say about Fionna and Cake!! (and possibly Ok KO because nobody ever talks about that show?? and it was so good??) Anyways thank you for keeping me company while I was cooking haha
thank you so much!! i also really love how organic fionna and cake’s more “adult” stuff feels, i’m excited to talk about it and also to see how it evolves in the future. and YES i’m always glad to see another ok ko appreciator, its so good.
Together Again was gut-punchingly bittersweet. Never had I experienced such finality in a work of fiction.
hearing time adventure during this literally made me start crying, this is an absolutely beautiful video. I've rewatched adventure time more times than I even know and this almost felt like re-exploring my favorite universe
thank you so much, that means so much!!! i cried when editing that in a few times, i hadn’t heard the comic con version in particular in a while so hearing it in this context really took me back
@@TuckerWooley adventure time has been my favorite show since it came out when i was a kid, i like to watch analysis videos on it but yours was so well put together and thoughtful that i had to leave a comment :)
@@Dani-xi1bq that’s so kind, thank you so much 😭😭
Thank you for putting this together. There’s so much to say about adventure time but you hit the spots and covered a lot of very important parts. Crazy it could take hours just talking about adventure time. I love it so much. Thank you for putting a lot of my love into a coherent talk. I can send this to my friends so they can understand why I love adventure time so much
that means so much, thank you!!!!!
Absolutely loved listening to this! You giving your own perspective and stories of your life while the show was running got me soooo nostalgic. Great work!
thank you, that means a lot!! i’m glad you enjoyed it
CW on an Adventure Time video essay caught me so off gaurd
Really loving that the RUclips algorithm keeps showing me good shit made by tiny channels, I never would have found this vid or your work a year ago! Glad I have :)
thank you so so much, i’m glad it did too!!!
@@TuckerWooley I enjoyed this video a lot, but I have to say I was really wishing for visuals as well especially when you were discussing the visual aspects of the show or a particular reference.
Im guessing you went without because you wanted to avoid copyright issues and because the project was also probably pretty huge, but it would have added a lot I think
That said it was still quality with audio only
@@thomas5076 thank you, i appreciate it! yeah, it was partially to avoid copyright, but even just the audio got this demonetized, so now that i know it wouldnt make much of a difference either way i definitely feel more incentivized to include video
This has been sitting in my watch later list for a while because it was a bit hefty bc I knew it would hit me really hard but it was so fuckin good. It’s incredible how you managed to put to words some of the intangibles of the show I feel I can’t convey well when I say I’m a fan of adventure time. The real life philosophy it introduced me to that still applies to me as an adult. The trials and tribulations of growing up and existing in an impossibly huge world full of real pain but also real bliss in a constant cycle all wrapped in a beautiful kid friendly package. I really appreciate you sharing your story about Boo, I’m currently agonizing over the mortality of a pet and some of the things you said were things I really needed to hear and inspired me to enjoy the time I have with my boy instead of worrying about the time when I won’t. I sincerely thank you for that.
thank you so so much, i really appreciate the kind words! i hope you and your funny guy get to enjoy lots more time together. 💖
Now I want to Watch Adventure Time all over again
This is amazing! I think so much of adventure times context comes with watching it in real time or atleast over time and i think alot of newer commentary misses the devil may care style of plotting and character development. This is the best example of all the threads pulled together. And damn 2 hours! I love it!
thank you so much! yeah, watching it as it aired was pretty profound; i rewatched it with some friends in college (for whom it was their first time) right before it ended and it was definitely a little more coherent without having to wait between episodes, but you also missed some of the more “dreadful” aspects
It so hard to listen to character quotes from adventure time with getting chills and tearing up. The whole show is such an emotional rollercoaster
same here for sure!
this is such insightful commentary! would love to see more from you!
thank you so so much!!!
Great video! I liked watching it and hearing your thoughts about the show a lot!
thank you so much!!!
Amazing and touching video, thanks for it. I relate to a lot of your feelings, having too grown up with/alongside the show. On a side note: time adventure broke me on the finale, broke me again when i discovered de SDCC video, and still makes me tear up every time.
thank you so much, i’m really glad it resonated!!! i tear up every time too for sure, it just has so much weight behind it that i can’t not
ayy, always great to see s'more AT fandom tumblrheads still kicking. I love hearing about how personally the show connected with its audience at the time (as it did greatly for me (also I guess you and I are the same age, haha)), but wow I can't imagine how the gravity of the finale must have felt like for you.
Also it's great to hear new interpretations of the source material even now, like, I never considered that Golb's tetris shapes resemble the time room... ALSO also I can hardly believe AT is still around; there will be more of it in the future! It's wild how much Adventure Time really is the gift that keeps on giving. Looking forward to hear your take on FnC whenever that's ready
hahaha, i’m glad it connected for you in similar ways! the time room thing seemed so obvious to me at the time but i realize how much of a stretch it is now, especially post FnC. how lucky we are to have a show that makes us think this much - and to keep having it!!!
This is an incredible video, I really enjoyed how you disect the themes in a very personal way!!
thank you so much, i really appreciate it!!!
I loved listening to this!! I also grew up aside adventure time and it is a very important show to me. Thanks for making this, i’ll definitely be rewatching :D
aww thank you, i’m glad it resonated with you!!! that means a lot!
This would’ve been one of the greatest summaries ever with visuals :( but I hella understand not wanting to find corresponding footage, let alone edit it perfectly alongside the audio.
thank you! yeah, finding the audio for everything really only bypassed a couple steps, but they made a difference in the longrun
Wow, man. I thought I've already seen the best Adenture Time video essays, but apparently was still missing this! It was an incredible journey that once I've started hearing, couldn't really stop 'til the end. Thanks for sharing your experience with the show, and you said some lessons I've heard before, but I really needed to hear again.
And I'll love if you do a video on Steven Universe! It was overshadowed by some decisions by the end, but it still have a lot of good, and Future was the kind of finale it deserved.
thank you so much, that’s so kind!! i’m glad it hit. i’m definitely eager to talk about steven, although hiding in private’s videos on it are kind of the definitive ones for me already
@@TuckerWooley Hm. Well, I've seen some of those videos on my feedback, but I thought, because of the titles, that they might be more of a re-threading of already discussed topics about SU. But I'll trust your taste, and go check them out. Thanks for the recommendation!
Hi! Can you suggest me some other Adventure Time video essays?
AT is really really close to my heart so the end of this brought up a lot of feelings for me. Have my sub even tho you made me cry a lot 👍
thank you so much, that means the world!!!!
Amazing video, I actually cried. I loved hearing your thoughts and this really encapsulated so many of the feelings I’ve had about this show for a long time.
thank you so much! that really means a lot. love your username!
this is incredibly well done, i was holding back tears at several points 😅 your analysis is incredible and insightful
thank you so much!! that really means so much 💖
This was absolutely lovely to listen to. I'm kind of in a weird spot, because I've never fully watched adventure time. The comedy and styling of it bounce off me really hard, to the point where I can't really enjoy it. Regardless, I've always really respected it because I knew it was pushing the envelope and doing a lot of really cool things that paved the way for other shows I love. I'm really grateful you took the time to lay this all out, it lets people like me who can't watch the show gain a deeper understanding of how exactly it was doing all those aforementioned amazing things. Thank you for your time and effort.
thank you so so much, i’m really glad you liked experiencing the show vicariously this way!!!
An amazing video, this does such a good job at putting my feelings of this show into words
thank you so much! that means a lot
i think this is a fantastic video essay, and i loved listening! however… aren’t there 10 seasons? 😭😭
thank you! yeah, the various releases were a bit confusing but there’s 10 ish lol
actually kinda glad this doesnt have too mucb visuals 😅 good video to draw to. a lot of great explanations too :)
aw cool, thank you! i love drawing to videos so i feel you lol
Great video I really liked hearing your prospective on the show. One thing I offer as advice is to raise the volume of the clips you use since its a podcast form video I put it on while do stuff around the house and could hear you fine but could barely hear anything else.
i’m sorry about that, thank you for letting me know!!
I love this show , i lost a friend close the end of the original show and that allways haunt me
At some pointe th dread was overcoming tge memories i had whit him , but a lot terapy , meditacion and just self reflection made reilese that even if i'll never see him again , it was preaty neat that i a had such a cool friend
I cry like a baby we i first saw togheter againg but i have made pace whit it
Nice video really
i’m so sorry for your loss, i’m glad you’ve been able to process it healthily and that you can enjoy the show because of it!
what an excellent video. i'd elaborate more, but this pretty much avoids any pitfall a work on western animation could make and gets everything that could make it good right. great work
Incredible video!!
thank you!!!
Whew! Love a good analytical synopsis 💪🏽☀️
Moral of the story: you’re not gonna get to be an animator unless you go to art school
not at all actually! plenty of working animators and artists didn’t go to art school. there’s plenty to be said about an art school education being a massive privilege and networking hub, but people still do it who have none of those things
Even though i'd never be able to watch this video on it's own (like many have said the lack of visuals shrunk the potential viewers) i still greatly enjoyed it and what you had to say, my only real gripe is that when you had played audio fron the show it was much quieter than you which made it hard to discern what was being said.
thank you for letting me know, i’ll try to rectify both those things in the future!
@@TuckerWooley i'd like to specify i took no issue with the lack of visuals as a video this long is already typically something i'll play in the background mainly while playing videogames
This was fantastic!
thank you so much!
Amazing video
thank you so much!
God Fionna and cake is so good
I never thought Jake was going to die at the end.
killing the dog at the end is a hack move, Yeah I'm looking at you Marley and Me.

this is my favorite comment ever probably, thank you
@@TuckerWooley dude im so serious i caught myself tearing up minimum 6 times youre the GOAT
@@CompadeGD thdnrnfn thank you i love to Produce Tears
The ONLY reason that I can think of for changing the order of the last two episodes of Distant Lands is the fate of Choose Goosev directly relating to Fionna and Cake. It's flimsy at best, but it's the only thing I've come up with.
Beautiful essay, though! Like, absolutely fantastic. I got legitimately teary-eyed several times. God, Adventure Time is so good.
thank you so much for liking it!!! yeah, i think choose goose is the key there too. another example of one of my favorite jokey minor characters becoming pretty key to the macro plot lmao
Wtching Together Again for the first time after my brother died hurt. A lot.
god, i'm sure :((( i'm so sorry for your loss
@@TuckerWooley thank you^^ I guess it just goes to show how powerful the writing is in this show. Definitely my favorite cartoon ever! It hurt, but it was also really comforting in an odd way
@@g00bleck i definitely agree!!
40:59 An interesting detail regarding Phlannel Boxingday and his supposedly being PB in a costume: In the Fionna and Cake series, we actually see a female Phlannel in the background at the ice rink, implying that Phlannel actually WAS NOT Princess Bubblegum. I do think the implication and suspicion of it was an important part of the themes and narrative of that episode though, and whether it was PB or not was never really the point, but they did end up showing this detail that confirms it wasn't.
WOAH, that’s huge! i didn’t notice that at all, thank you so much for sharing!
Incredible video. I grew up alongside adventure time in a similar way to you, it's so to hear about other people's experiences with the show.
Edit: And I'd love to hear your thoughts on F&C and OK KO!

I assume that Jake died in space with banana man
probably yeah! though steve wolfhard’s headcanon comic about jake dying always gets me twitter.com/wolfhard/status/1152323734226661376?lang=en

thank you! hope you enjoy
I'm trying to follow but are there no visuals? Just VO? It's just weird when the clips play because it takes longer to understand what im hearing and what's being said.

thank you so much! this one was obviously lighter on the video part, but for that i used after effects. the audio i recorded and edited all in audacity!
I've done mushrooms twice, both times I watched some Adventure Time. And let me tell you, Joy and Dread were exactly what I felt (Respectively).
oh BOY, i can imagine 😂😂
The gut grinder episode almost put me in a coma from laughing. When he reaches into that old man's mouth and takes his tooth. 🤣
@@SenorBear oh god i loveeee that one lmao, i think that was technically the season 1 finale even
Amazing video!!! I wrote an essay on Entrapta as an autistic character that included lemongrab and cinnamon bun! I personally saw both Lemongrab and CB as examples of failure to support in effective and appropriate ways, both "stabilize" when they are removed from PB's specific style of support and are given what they individually need through others and individuality, but it is unfortunate that they flail in thr ways they do at surface level :( CB is still a favorite for autistic rep for me ESPECIALLY with his flame wolf being a service animal and the parallel of him and bun bun.
OMG, that sounds like an incredible essay, thank you for sharing that with me! i’d love to see it sometime!! and i love his flame wolf as a service animal, i didn’t see that at all but its so clear in hindsight!
could you share your essay please ?!
@Lzie287 it was for a class I am currently still in and sharing it would risk me getting self plagiarization so I can't right now :/
hey y’all! just came across this funny tiktok that really hits on some of the things i was trying to get at in this video. www.tiktok.com/t/ZPRcTxA5h/
Keep on truckin buddy loss is here and it just keeps coming 💖 it's the cost of love and it sucks
aint that the truth? the way you put that makes me think of my favorite AT video essay, this one ruclips.net/video/zFNU9xEv-5E/видео.htmlsi=g3KLn-YqGvFanqMn and the cs lewis quote therein: “The pain I feel now is the happiness I had before. That's the deal.”
Adding to the pile of bad dads. It's very minor, but I'd argue that the grass sword curse had a pretty terrible creator
oh 1000%, that guy was a jerk
Talk about OK KO
i’m on it! ⭐️
10 seasons, no? Like 9 and 10 could def be one season sure, but they not right?
sorta! i think on the dvds they released 9 and 10 together as “the final seasons,” but a lot of places have them listed separate. i forgot about that
@@TuckerWooley oh okay i was just confused but great vid
i'm not gon lie bro, calling this a video essay is very generous, good vid though
thanks! yeah thats fair lol
Two hour podcast format video covering the entire span of adventure times run in detail with analysis doesn’t fit the video essay format? Idk if this was intended quite as rude as it came off but the only difference between this and other long form video essay type content is the lack of visuals to go along with it, don’t diminish peoples hard work trying to be a critic
bro im sorry to say, but this is an audio book, not a video essay
You speak so fast 😅
Boy you was talking way tooo fat, gotta listen on .75
