She also canonically understands Korean since she converses with lady Rainicorn!
Well when your as old as she is why not learn some languages
If that's the case, what makes Princess Bubblegum speak German?
@@fayhay8011 Might have something to do with the mother gum's memories tbh

She's candy Hitler, of course
I mean, she is basically Candy Hitler sometimes.
She is a mad scientist.
Well she is evil..
@@JEvans-wy9lnShe may be many things, but evil Is not one of them.
My headcanon is that the Mother Gum that Bonnie was a part of during the mutation of the Mushroom War was German manufactured as candy before. And that's why she always defaults to the language when she's not thinking about it, cause she'll usually do it in states of shock, exhaustion, or fear.
i always thought of the mother gum as the exploded corpse from the previous elemental
@@raphaelryan392Oh god…
Why does that kinda make sense though?
@@raphaelryan392maybe the previous Candy 🍬 elemental was German herself? Or at least some the human components of her were a majority of German foreigners, that worked in the candy manufacturing company she from!?!???
@@julianbonleon283 The last Candy elemental before the Mushroom War was apparently an African-American male. I presume that when he died, the elementals took form in the post-apocalyptic conditions. It's possibly more likely that PB defaults to German due to many things, such as English being a Germanic language, and major advancements in Science and Mathematics taking place in Germany.
@@lavatacoburrito9410 I was also aware that Bonnie's predecessor was a man, but I had no idea he was black. 😗
When i was a kid i didnt know she was speaking german now with a B2 in german god damn i didnt realise it
whats a ''B2'' ?
is that a weird school grades system or something.
@@pdokik9340 it's the german / language grading system B2 is like advanced
@@Jason-hn6dqIm German and never heard of that
@@DaNumba1King It’s actually a level-based system used by most Foreign Language learning programmes. There’s three levels: A, B and C, (namely beginner, medium and fluent) all three of which being divided into two subcathegories. For example, A1 is beginner-proper, A2 is beginner-advanced and so on. Personally, I’m a level C1 German speaker and I hope to get my C2 diploma in the near future :’)

As a German native it's so hilarious hearing Americans speaking German for absolutely no good reason.
She even managed to contain her accent enough that it's actually understandable.
what language does she speak in the german dub if in english she speaks german? i've always been wondering that lol
@@KROYFISH Good question. I wouldn't know, I stopped watching shows in the German Dub years ago, for this very reason. You always lose something in translation. This joke won't work in German.
Europeans when Americans only know English : “why don’t you guys learn more languages???”
Also Europeans : *laughs at them even learning a few phrases because they’re not phonetically correct even tho most Europeans sounds so inaudible in speaking English with their thick accents*
@@sanegayguy Oh no that's not the point. The funny part is that there is no reason for Bubblegum to randomly start speaking German. Her American accent in German is actually quite decent. German is the total antithesis to American English, which means it's one of the hardest languages to learn to speak.
On a side note though, everyone on Earth should at least be capable of speaking 2 languges somewhat fluently.
@@Mediados I sure hope so, many people gives Native English Voice Actors shit when they have to say some foreign phrases, yet they keep quite when say Japanese Voice Actors butchered English words lol

Fun fact: she speaks German because the voice actoress Hynden Walch is of German descent and speaks it as a second language. Theres probably an in show lore reason too but idk
to my knowledge, there isn't a lore reason
No, I think that was disproven. Bonnie’s VA didn’t know the character was gonna speak German and the ppl working on the show didn’t know she was fluent. It was just a coincidence
It's said in AT lore that German is actually the language demons use so there's that lol, but I doubt PB care bout that

Well in my country's dubbed version there never was a German speaking thing so finding this out actually quite a surprise for me.
Same in the latin spanish dub, she didn't say anything in german
That's lame, voice actors are totally able to speak a few words in another language or sing a little song but more often than not VA productions deliberatelly decide to change it
It would've been hilarious if in the German version, Bubblegum spoke English in those parts.
Same here for the french dub

Out of the few times I heard an American speak German in a cartoon... This is the best
I heard that numbers are processed differently by the brain than words, so even if you were fluent in whatever language you're speaking, you end up saying numbers with your first language. So it makes perfect sense that PB decides to speak german while counting down.
Studies have also found people think more logically if they do it in their second language. Something about it requiring a little more focus, I suppose?
I'm brazilian and it took me a while to start reading the numbers in english
I defy. I sometimes do math in English and sometimes in my native language
@@PotatoPatatoVonSpudsworthif I recall it properly.... This is due to
For you, your first language it's a more passionate and emotional language, you grew with that one so in moments of rush, excitement or too much emotions you say the thing on that language
Talking and thinking on your native language tends to give you a more emotional perspective
On the other hand, talking or thinking on other languages MAKES YOU think what you will say, the meaning of the words themselves, this lends to give you a more rational thinking process because it doesn't have the same impact as your native language
I'm native German but I've been speaking English since first grade, at this point I converse more using English than German a day, so I'm starting to mess up my German skills, but whenever I count I still count in German or sometimes in Japanese since I'm learning that too lol

It is in the WW2 lore

How did I miss these? They’re so obviously German even if you don’t know the language.
As pointed out by Human frankienayman3641 I missed a moment in Season 10 episode 9 ''Blenanas'' where P.B. gives Finn ''Der Witz Und Seine Beziehung Zum Unter Bewussten''

I believe the photo of the family she modeled her gum family around was the family that found her and kept her safe when she was a tiny gumdrop. That they taught her german before she learned english
She found that picture where she found the worlds best uncle mug, ie. The empty building where that family live before whatever unfortunate things happened to them

Personally, i've never watched Adventure Time in english, only in my native language (brazilian portuguese). So for me, it felt like P.B was speaking a whole another dimension rather than a whole another language.

It took me this long to realize that she was speaking German in all those episodes. Man i feel dumb 😂
SHE SPEAKS GERMAN IN THE ENGLISH VERSION??!!!!
Yes
Occasionally, typically at times of high stress or emotion.
In the brazillian dub she doesnt speak anything other than the portuguese, but there are also scenes where there is no dub, just subtitles and the original language (mostly on the adult jokes, yes we didnt dubbed the adult jokes, haha)
You know considering the fact all the war crimes she’s committed………………
a German accent makes perfect sense
This reminds me of a comic made by Centurii chan where a woman is being interviewed for admission into the Monster Girl Association. The interviewer asked her what kind of a monster is she, to which the interviewee is revealed to be an SS Officer.
Speaking English would make more sense for a war criminal, considering all the atrocities the allies perpetrated. Like the Bengal famine, stealing Palestinian land to establish Israel, the atomic bombs, and many more

Bubblegum like:
Considering the large amount of famine and witch hunts, maybe not. She’s a very specific type of dictator, wanting every one of her citizens to be cared for and protected, yet only really disables threats via negotiation or espionage. So, probably not. Ehhhhhh its alright. The "ich" sound not that great
But can we all agree that "Im busy practicing for the whistling choir deathmatch championship" is the most out of pocket excuse for needing to hangup on someone ever
Her German is 9/10 times very understandable...but as a native German speaker (technically I speak Swiss-German but in general, all Swiss-Germans also learn how to speak fluid German when we grow up) I have no idea what she's saying at 0:28 (the meteor thing around Ice king's mountain...it sounds like "Ach mein Glüb" ...is she supposed to say "ach, mein Gott?" or "ach, meine Güte"?) or 0:43 (with the mutant monsters...it sounds like... As someone who can speak German... this is why I love PB
(Love her as a character not like "in love" with her lmao)
She knows German because the first book she read was a German dictionary
I think the reason why she speaks in german its because it was the first language she learned as a kid in that episode about her past she writes in german aswell
The fact that her out of all people speaks German
The fact that the character known for being a control freak leader speaks german...
Her pronunciation is really good for being voiced by a non native speaker. Most people who don't know much German exaggerate the -ch so it sounds like they're hacking up phlegm, while native speakers usually pronounce it as a soft hiss. Even her counting had a good accent.
apparently her voice actress is of German origin
