The aids joke would have been funnier if we didn't know for sure that she personally viewed it as "God's punishment for the gays."
It wasn't terribly funny back when South Park did it, so why would she think it would be funny when she said it (back when she did)?
still wouldn't have been funny
@@Ghoulicus This woman might keel over if she ever glimpsed an episode of South Park
@@Ghoulicusah, the Jared episode.
@@Ghoulicus Christians often do think they’re funny. Usually, they’re the joke, though.
"I have aids - visual aids. And I also have crabs - these crabsticks, a delicious and nutritious snack. I also have VD - Video Discs, on sale next to the crabstick table. Finally, I have the clap, for which I blame my husband."
😂😂😂😂funniest comment on here!!
Brilliant! 😂
Her husband didn't make her wear that too tight button down, it's not his fault.
I got the clap once. I was on stage and the audience applauded.
Yeah I thought you could only see herpes.. you learn something new everyday!
"Cheer myself up with... the horrors of sex."
What a phrase Emma 😂
This quote has Cards Against Humanity vibes
@blahanger4304They can do…
The "I have aids....visual aides" is such a Michael Scott moment
😂 Nailed it!
And then we watch her read from a piece of paper! So clearly she was lying so she could make a tasteless joke about a deadly disease. For shame, Shannon!
It's a literal South Park joke.
It is weird being a guy who got the typical "girls" treatment on abstinence. Like I wasn't allowed to go to school dances because my dad thought the only reason anyone would go is to find someone to hook up with. My brother got in trouble for basically having a girlfriend - it wasn't the having but he was never allowed to actually go see her.
The twisted ironic part is being socially stunted because I was discouraged from dating in my teens but as soon as I was in my twenties I was expected to start having grandkids. When, in my late twenties, my dad started getting pushy about it I said "you have three boys who have trouble with relationships, I blame the parents." He did not like that - but he stopped asking.
This 100%. The fact that on what feels like a dime they'll turn around on you like "you're an adult now, not that I've ever treated you like one, go find a man sent by god and make me grandkids". Suddenly sex for procreation is an open and encouraged topic, they'll give you every remedy and trick in the book, and the entire time any complaints of pain are just met with "it will get better over time" as if the vaginismus wasn't specifically caused by religious trauma. Ahhhh.
This is the reality of building a sex ed program based entirely on the preachings of a group of hysterical, religiously repressed virgins & neo-Puritan conservatives
...instead of a panel of child psychologists, gynecologists & other credentialed health professionals working off a body of scientific, documented research on human sexuality & child development.
One group builds a sex ed program based on reality. The other group ... not so much.
Yuup feel that. I wasn't allowed to even think about being in a relationship until I was about 19. Was barely allowed to have friends of the opposite sex. Then suddenly my mom was on me about grand kids and genuinely mad at me for not dating immediately. I guess she wanted me to do what my super religious roommates did in college and get engaged to someone I'd known for 3 months. Haha nope.
I resonate strongly with the first sentence of the second paragraph. My Christian upbringing absolutely crippled my ability to be social in general.
9:18 Ace Jesus?
“Sure, he was tempted in every way BUT sexually.”
Literally just Ace.
I always thought that was the case.
The fact that she admits whole heartedly that Jesus was hella bangable made me laugh so hard.
Yes thats a extremely resnible interpretation off the story of Jesus in the bible.
/Cristian swedish bi-cis-woman
Ps: that abstinens women is not resnible at all.
Sex in Christian circles is less about sexuality and more about control of the individual. Especially women. Its a pernicious form of abuse that attacks at a very deep level of the psyche, and its constant because we are sexual beings, we have sex, we feel sexual desire constantly so its a constant shame, repression, self-fighting and perpetuation of abuse through belief. Very violent form of abuse.
Yeah I went through that. Its terrible.
Same.
It also effects us sex repulsed asexuals. We're taught that when we reach adolescence we're all going to be struggling with "sexual sin" when that doesn't happen for you you start to think something must be wrong you. And then there's the fact that you're SUPPOSED to have sex when you're married and your husband will be expecting it. Which is even more horrifying.
It might be slightly worse for women, but I can tell you from experience it does hurt men too. Religion is like being in an abusive relationship, except the abuser doesn’t actually exist, you’ve just been told he does.
Edit: I would advise against scrolling any further into this thread, it becomes a shit show. Also, I was thinking of the Abrahamic religions, some of the other ones are mostly harmless.
@@voiceofthelegion578 It seems very likely that this caused your sex repulsion in the first place. Do you really just want to accept this?
Shipping Jesus gives a whole new meaning to the phrase... "Get behind me Satan..." LOL
I bet Satan's actually a bottom but he tops because that's what everyone expects him to do
And he's saying that to Peter, so there's roleplay involved too

Abstinence only "education" is leading to abortions by not preparing their children for the reality of sex, leading to unwanted pregnancies. Shaming single mothers is doing the rest.
Comprehensive sex education and easy access to birth control results in a drop in abortions. So if abortion is actually your number one priority you have to support both.
You are right
But according to my local parental rights group, sex educational makes teenagers think about the sex, which means they will do the sex, which is why the trusted parental method of 'refusing to talk about anything' means no sex happens.
@@matildarose speaking from personal experience my parents never talked about sex with me. All I did when I was teenager was look at bra straps and wonder what a breast felt like. We’re they heavy? How soft were they?
By the way I grew up in Texas, the same state Shannon is from.
@matildarose how do you know no sex happens, people can and will have sex regardless of what you tell them.
So it's better to have proper sex education so they can use birth control to its fullest. To help reduce abortion.
Not trying to start anything, but this is just so you know.
@@RandomDragonEXE I agree. I had no sex education when I was a teen. Believe me, a proper sex education is what everyone should, what shannon is telling people is not sex education. It is cover everything up.
Every time I hear someone telling me about the "lures of homosexuality", I gotta kind of wonder if they're projecting. They need to accept themselves and come out of the closet.
Yep, they're bi-curious. Or maybe not even curious any more, they're Bi-Knowledgeable.
I used to talk about this exact thing and about how gay was a sin but it turns out I’m bi so ur probably right abt the projection
Generally I don't like the "homophobes are all closeted" but there it's a particular brand of homophobe that does make you wonder.
Many of her points can be refuted by teaching young girls to have the confidence to say "no" and to teach boys that just because theyre areoused by something, doesnt mean they have to act on it.
A new Christian suddenly agrees the Bible needs context and maybe shouldn't be taken literally with
Matthew 18:9 New Living Translation (NLT) - And if your eye causes you to sin, gouge it out and throw it away.
i think what you're referring to is Self Respect. Which is forbidden in Christian circles.
A lot of Christian circles lack that kind of emotional maturity unfortunately.
The "Jesus and Mo" website has a hilarious T-shirt of burka clad women with the text:"Thank you for not provoking my uncontrollable list".

Just FYI Emma, there was a lot of this purity culture stuff going around for men at the same time - “Every Man’s Battle” by Stephen Arterburn was published at the exact same time as Shannon’s “Every Woman’s Battle” (Aug 2009). I went through some of those small group books studies, all emphasizing abstinence, saving yourself for your wife, “bouncing your eyes” (looking quickly away from marginally sexual images or displays). Really leaned heavily into the “all viewing of any kind of porn (including erotica) = addiction” angle. It was definitely aimed at both men and women.
+1 to purity culture content. It is so I engrained that you even people outside Christianity are influenced
The AIDS joke is revolting. Absolutely revolting. Trivializing suffering. So hilarious.
Totally agree. Its not funny
50 million dead and christians helped it happen
I didn't laugh because it's funny, I laughed because it's shocking that she would think it's appropriate. Not "haha that was clever" more like "haha what the fuck Shannon"
You know what's worse than that joke? The Holocaust.
The delivery is really good, the content is awful. I feel she could be pretty funny if she used better material
Speaking of bra straps, during Covid lockdown there were a shortage of face masks. I saw on RUclips how you could make a face mask from a women’s bra. The hardest thing I ever have done was buy a bra at Walmart. I felt at any moment someone would start yelling PERVERT at me. I made the face mask and I loved it. I still have it. I want to be buried wearing the bra mask.

Wait, does 1 bra make you only a single mask or a pair?

I was super evangelical Christian in high school, and I owned Every Woman's Battle and used it like a guidebook. Thankfully, that book has been destroyed and thrown out since then (I'm almost 40).
Despite knowing it’s the title of the book, somehow in my head you owning ‘every woman’s battle’ was clearly boasting some form of martial prowess
Hey! I had the companion version, "Every Young Man's Battle". I'm 35, and I have no idea what happened to that stupid book.
I genuinely don't support book burning, but some are just vile. I remember a linguist who researched on books from N💩zis for his PhD. He didn't know what to do with them after his graduation, so he created Origami. I thought that was a good idea.
@ninaschust3694 That book was so harmful - purity culture is the most toxic theology. That - and books like that - messed me up more than I am willing to say on here, but others like April Ajoy talks about her and her partner's experiences. I'm still working through the trauma, and probably always will be to an extent.
Just going to say this but abstinence-only sex-ed correlates to high rates of teen and out-of-wedlock pregnancy. Actually higher than no sex ed.
Bingo!
Gots this is giving me trama flashbacks. I wore a c cup bra size in middle school. And I was shut shamed for wearing normal tee shirts all the way though middle school.
I was raised Roman Catholic and the intensity of their organizational hatred of basic bodily functions was the beginning of my deconstruction.
"I'll tell you... it's because I have AIDS... visual aids to help show you" um... ok.

Whoopi Goldberg put it best: "You can't stop people from having sex, it feels good! And if it doesn't, get yourself another partner!"
I ordered one of your "Hello Lovely People " shirts last month. I work in a care facility for older adults with mental health issues. I wore the shirt to work one day and the residents really got a kick out of it. I like to see them smile as many of them had been previously unhoused and also don't have families in their lives for a variety of reasons. So now the phrase "hello Lovely people" is my default greeting to the residents when I start my shift, even when I'm not wearing the shirt. 😊 Thank you for your great content, Emma.
A little compassion goes a long way
I'm amazed Emma resisted making the "Oops, I've been deflowered" joke.
We'll just not talk about the "disciple that Jesus loved. "
I guess it is kind of the taboo of all taboos -- Even the movie _Dogma_ wasn't willing to go there. (Bethany is descended from one of Jesus' brothers, rather than Jesus himself, which would have made more sense plotwise.)
Would that mean having a Mary Christ-mas?
"all that and a bag of chips" was a popular expression in the mid nineties USA. also, "Homey don't play that" is a reference to Homey D Clown, a Damon Wayans character from the comedy skit show, "In Living Color" from the same time period. Homey D Clown was hilarious, as very early Tim Carrey's character, Fire Marshall Bill.
Basically, she dated her video by trying to use the hippest slang in a very exact moment of mid-90's culture.
Thank you. I was trying to remember what "Homey don't play that" was from. Man, In Living Color. That takes me back...
@@jamesrule1338 "triple snap in a Z formation!"
The thing is the video had to be filmed in 2004 or after. Because they were advertising Every Young Women’s Battle and that book was published in 04.
@@hollyhock3848 nice catch there... Weird how she chose to use old phrases dated from a very specific time period in American pop culture.
polygamy is not the same thing as polyamory/non-monogamy. bit of a nit pick, but its one that really annoys me. Not just men want to have more than one partner.
The bulk of poly relationships I'm aware of are Female with more than one Male.
@Susieshoosie wdym? The term seems general enough... "When a man is married to more than one wife at the same time, it is called polygyny. When a woman is married to more than one husband at the same time, it is called polyandry."
Yeah, non-monogamy is the umbrella term. Both polygamy and polyamory fall under that umbrella. Polygamy specifically refers to marriage, i.e. having more than one spouse. Polyamory doesn’t necessarily involve marriage at all.
Thanks for standing up for this! Polygamy =/= polygyny
Polygamy isnt just a man having many wives, its dictation that women are subordinate objects to men. Polygamists are polygynists, polyamourists can be polygynists, polygamists are not polyamorous.
@@BaddeGrasse obviously it's "not a man having many wives" -- since it's ANY PERSON having multiple (legal) spouses. How is that not polyamorous tho? o.O
I have a friend where both waited till marriage to have sex. It was horrible for both of them and it took years before they divorced. Sex was the primary reason it ended and ended badly. It was specifically because of teachings like this that ruined that relationship and caused trauma for years after it ended. The guy refused to use protection because of Christian beliefs and actually ended up getting HIV and giving it to his second wife. It astounds me how abstinence only sex Ed can ruin peoples lives.
Not to mention the psychological issues teaching "sex is scary, sex is a sin" causes to a woman (specifically) which can make sex significantly more painful and even impossible. Being married doesn't get rid of decades of psychological tension surrounding a topic. Vaginismus is very real and it fucking sucks.
I'm sorry, but the data really doesn't support that claim whatsoever. Women who marry as virgins only have a 6% chance of getting divorced later down the line, compared to a 20% chance with women with one prior sexual partner, going up to 35% with women who have had 10+ partners. Say what you will about these specific teachings by this woman, but I'll assure you that teaching abstinence before marriage is demonstrably the best way to go. I'd wager that the main problem wasn't abstinence alone, but your friend may have been pressured by society to "settle down" at a later age. People aren't expected to get married from 19-21 years old anymore, we're encouraged to wait longer for who knows what reason. I could be wrong but that's just my thought
@@oofcloof _aaaannnnnddd_ what's the proof on these claims? Sounds like there are some caveats not being mentioned
Also teaching abstinence only doesn't work, as Mississippi clearly shows. Not to mention it's rather absurd to expect people to be married at 19-21 years old, one can't even legally drink at 19 years yet they're expected to get married? We don't even have stable finances at those ages! Also ya don't know the friend, so maybe stop with the assumptions
@@DarkFleurofIra telling me I’m not backing up my claims (which I can’t do properly because YT shadowbans links in comments) and then saying abstinence doesn’t work and referencing… Mississippi? But to address your point, the study I was referencing was from the Institute for Family Studies, and is widely accepted. And yes, I do think it’s absurd to expect people to get married at 19-21, not because it’s impossible, because it clearly was possible back in the day, but our society has put so much of an emphasis on waiting to start a family, making it difficult for high school grads to get off the ground and make a living wage like they could back in the day, encouraging people to prioritize the corporate life over family, and telling people not to settle down and have the “enjoy life while you still can” type of mentality. It’s a greater societal issue.
@@oofcloof Institution for Family Studies? The rightwing think tank? Knew it, I wouldn’t trust anything that comes from them.
I’m also well aware of the shadow bans (happens to me far too much), so when I ask for proof I just usually expect a name.
Again, what’s wrong with waiting? Even if we did make better wages, I feel like there shouldn’t be an expectation for people to rush into marriage
When I first glanced at the title I misread it and thought it said Christmas vs Sex
Oh Christmas wins that round. You are exhausted.
Abstinence Education - when teen moms abstain from high school because they're home taking care of their baby
It's people with her way of thinking that had me think something was wrong with me in my teen years into early adulthood. It took a lot to break away from that mindset and come to terms that I was lied to and my sexual urges were normal.
I'm not sure that she does actually care that much. Having spent a long time in Christian circles, there is a huge amount of power and self-justification that can be gleaned by being someone who tells people what to do. Christianity has been full of these mini-dictatorships right from the start. You even find them in the bible. Plus, she's obviously making a mint out of this.
Becoming one of these little demigods is considered a perfectly legitimate career direction in many places. I was in South Carolina in the late 2000s and, as we were driving along the road, I noticed a pile of at least ten long, white pointy things lying by the roadside. I finally worked out what they were, because we'd seen a fair few in use on our visit. They were mass-produced steeples for putting on churches. Think about it; in that part of America half the population seems to want to start off their own church and get reaping in the tithes from the other half - to the extent that mass-production of church steeples is lucrative enough to become a business in itself. In America at least, greed is considered a virtue rather than a sin.
I love the disconnect in these abstinence programs. "Make sure no man sees your body or gets to touch you cause they are unable to stay abstinent if you tempt them. They cannot control themselves! But also remember to submit to them and alsways be submissive to them cause men are natural leaders!"
The two diametrically opposed views on my gender makes my head hurt.

John: "I only washed Jesus' feet so I could look up his skirt"
I can't even imagine being raised in an atmosphere where even the least of sexual urges are to be repressed, feared, and constantly fought against. Not to mention the belief of some that sex should only be for the purpose of procreation with your spouse, and will even shame taking pleasure in it when you do it `correctly.` The sheer amount of fear and guilt that must produce in a teenager especially, must be unbearable.
Are you saying you were never a teenager?
@@dewardroy6531 No, I'm saying that as a teenager, I was never put under that pressure via indoctrination.
What are urges? I only felt indifference.
Something I've noticed with some religious and conservative people is that they seem to agree with progressive people on a lot of the issues, but are unwilling or unable to look beyond the 'approved' structures and systems for solutions. Instead, they condemn the very idea that there could be other options besides just accepting the status quo, because that's what all the other religious and conservative people do.
They either are crabs in a bucket, not allowing others to have a better live, or live outside the bucket and prefer everyone else in.
To be honest, believing everyone else thinks and feels and wants the same things we do ourselves is a common human failing.
Sex wins that fight.

I'd like to watch your explorations of her different books, not to laugh at them (too much) but to hear your ever-rational ideas about such over-the-top life-philosophies, if you may.
Why is always Texas and Louisiana. Why can’t it for once be Essex or Middlesex, they have too much sex anyways.
I would love a series of videos called Conservatives versus sex where each video focuses on different kinds of conservatives from various religions to more fringe groups like objectivists.
Tell the god botherers that our personal lives are our business, not theirs.
The music for the google search was pretty hard Emma, glad i found your videos again, time to catch up, also that scooby-doo dress is pretty fucking dope
One time, in 6th grade, our computer teacher, put his hand on a girl’s shoulder (ew) and said, “y’all, I have AIDS, visual aids.” Then he gestured to his glasses. I was 12, I don’t even think I knew what AIDS was. I just remember thinking that guy was a creep for putting his hand on that girl’s shoulder ON THE FIRST DAY OF CLASS.
Then, and I’m not making this up, he said, “I always tell that joke on the first day of class. Don’t tell your parents I made that joke. One time, a student thought I really had AIDS, and he told his mom, and then she called the principal. And the admin had a talk to me about it.” It’s like, dude. Even as a 12 year old, I knew, IF THIS HAS HAPPENED TO YOU BEFORE, AND YOU GOT IN TROUBLE WITH ADMIN FOR IT, WHY WOULD YOU KEEP DOING IT?!?!
lol, that was 16 years ago. I’m a teacher now and I CANNOT imagine doing something like this. Maybe he was old and didn’t give a shit anymore if he got fired or not 🤷♂️ that guy was a creep lol
"Homey don't play that?" June 17th, 1990 called and would like you to contemporize.
I left the church over a decade ago. I still have intense shame around my sexuality to this day because of stuff like this. I've been in therapy for a long while and this is a topic I am still uncomfortable talking about, even with my therapist or my partner.
This shit is child abuse.
@@Antony-bp2yh what a deeply ignorant and hurtful thing to say. Do you genuinely believe that it's impossible to teach a child that normal sexual behavior is immoral?
@@Antony-bp2yhI'm going to ignore the implication that only heterosexual, married sex is "normal" because I just got off a 16-hr shift and I don't have the energy for that level of bigotry right now.
But to address the larger point, biology may or may not reassert itself eventually, but it is not at all uncommon for Christians to experience sexual dysfunction due to the conditioning they've received.
The trauma of an entire lifetime being told that sex is wrong and dangerous does not magically abate because you exchange vows.
Where you getting this from anyhoo Antony. Leviticus perchance? So I'll assume you've never clipped the edge of your beard, worked the Sabbath or worn clothing made with two woven materials? Eaten pork? Eaten fat instead of offering it to God in the proper ritual way?
It's all "new covenant!" until Leviticus 18:22 and then u all get all literalist about it lmao smh.
Very summer solsticey
