The most surprising gift that I received was my first Magic: The Gathering deck. A Tempest deck. My father gave it to me on a Sunday morning, soon after my best friend tragically died. I did not appreciate the gesture back then. I was young. But it was the perfect gift. the perfect way for me to start socializing again, making friends and learning that we must keep moving forward, no matter what.

I was trading cards with someone at my LGS a year or so ago, and when we were done he pulled a Rashmi, Eternities Crafter out of the binder and handed it to me and said that since I was building a Rashmi deck I'd probably need one. That card wasn't a part of our trade, he just gave it to me and never asked for anything in return.
It was such a small moment but it took me by surprise, we had only interacted once or twice prior to that day, we'd played maybe a game of commander and talked at the counter maybe once, but that's it. My Rashmi deck is one of my favorites, and I've had countless opportunities to get a foil/prerelease Rashmi, but that copy is special.

The most surprising "gift" I have ever received was in one of the lowest times of my life.
I was really hit by depression and went to the supermarket to buy the limited amount of things I could afford with what money I could - as I was not able to work at the time.
As I got to the counter I was zapped through in rapid time and noticed the staff at the supermarket smiling at me knowingly. Feeling a little bewildered as I probably looked pretty awful I didn't notice them packing my items next to some other bags.
When I went to pay, they shook their head and said that a store manager had seen me walking around and bought the bags already packed and would buy what I bought to the counter for me.
I was utterly floored how a complete stranger could see just how bad things were and the sheer act of kindness - I think it was the first step out of that spiral.
    Sometimes humanity can be wonderful.

About 3 years ago, my wife casually asked me what my favorite basic land art was. Me not being too bright, told her the Swamp from Unglued by Mark Zig. It was full art, beautiful, and just unique to me at the time. That Christmas she presented me with a 3 foot canvas of that art that she painted herself, and I was, and still am blown away by that gift.

A week after my grandmother passed away I was sitting at home when a package arrived at my door. Upon opening it, I saw that it was a Nintendo switch. There was a letter inside the box with my grandmother's writing, it said "Honey, I know that you'll be sad when I'm gone but I want you to be able to smile and stay happy. Our last conversation you had brought up that you had been saving up for this and I want you to put that money towards your moving fund. -Love Ma" It truly broke my heart and it took a while before I could even take it out of the box. Every time I pick it up to this day I think of her and think of how she would have loved to play.

At lunch she told me that her mother really believes in me and wants to support my future and decided to pay my tuition cost for the Teaching English as a Foreign Language course at my university ($1200!!!!). I was so humbled and grateful. My most surprising “gift” was two years ago I was going on a service trip to Costa Rica. The city we were leaving from is Miami and we were staying in my Aunt’s apartment for the two nights before I left. My Aunt asked us what we were planning on doing and me as a huge baseball fan, asked if my mother wanted to go to a Marlins game (even though I am a Yankees fan born and raised in NY). My aunt informed us that she was really good friends with one of the owners and in five minutes she had gotten my mother and I front row tickets! I was so excited. We got to the game and the tickets came with all these amenities and it was awesome. I was watching batting practice and then this guy came down and introduced himself as my Aunt’s friend. He said come take a walk with me and I had no idea where we were going. He took me and my mother up an elevator and we walked down a long hallway to this huge set of glass double doors. He opens them and inside there is a giant bald dude talking to someone. My aunt’s friend interrupts and says “hey Derek, someone is here to meet you.” And my jaw dropped. Standing before me was my hero, Derek Jeter. I was speechless. I was literally meeting my hero and I shook his hand and talked with him for like 5 minutes. This is the hardest game in the world, even if they didn't give me any material gift, they gave me their time and that is one of the best gift i ever had. The time of a friend is priceless.

The most surprising gift I received was a big green wurm creature from my older cousin. I was probably 10 at the time. It's not important but I can't remember/find the card, and I think it was lost or destroyed. What is important is that it got me into MTG. 10 years later my cousin was in a tragic car accident, and he is still recovering from a brain injury. I have now returned the favor and I buy a booster box of the latest set every-time I see him (once a year). He keeps the singles but I keep the experience of still getting to play with him.

When I was around 7 and my brother was 6 he managed to make his own ebay account, mail somebody cash in an envelope and buy me and Charizard card because we both thought they were cool. My parents were probably the most surprised that he had figured out how to do that.

For me the best "Gift" I've been given was a tiny little squeak ball of a Kitten. Happened to ask a friend to pick me up a few things on their way home, and when they arrived, was presented with an orange tabby the size of my palm. 6 years later and still the most precious thing to me.

While I cannot think of the best gift I've ever been given, I can definitely think of my favorite prerelease.
So far, I've kept all of my prerelease promos; except for one. I fell out of Magic for a while in college, but the set that got me back in was Eldritch Moon (mainly for Ultich, the Werewolf commander).
I drove up to my college town one weekend in the summer so I could prerelease with a friend. The only problem I had was that I did NOT know how to play limited, and so I floundered during deck construction. I hastily put some cards and lands together and sat down for game 1.
I lost badly. Fortunately, my opponent, David, was super cool. He sat with me and helped me build an actually good deck.
After the prerelease, I was so grateful to David that I gave him my prerelease promo: Mirrorwing Dragon. Best prerelease I've been to yet.

I suppose you can call it a gift, though it would be the surprise birthday party my wife threw for me a few years ago. I had never had one and she took it upon herself to arrange everything and keep it 100% from me until I pulled into our driveway and was quote confused. It was an awesome evening for everyone involved, especially for me and it has gone down in my memories as one of our favorite events together.

Working at Lowes I’ve met a lot of wonderful people, but one customer in particular really made my day. I had a call out in the garden center and was all alone unloading pallets in mulch into peoples trucks and trailers for hours. We’re not allowed to accept tips so a customer asked me what my favorite food was. I told him pizza just as something quick and then easy so we could get the line moving so I might possibly be able to get away for a minute. 45 minutes later the guy pulls back up with a whole pie and just gives it to me no questions asked thanked me for the work I was doing and drove off. There was a $20 bill lodged in the corner of the box as well. I see him from time to time at the store and I still thank him to this day. Sorry if the story was a little long.

For MTG specifically: Within my playgroup, everyone knows my favorite planeswalker is Tezzeret, Agent of Bolas since it's tied with Mirrodin Besieged. I've sold my initial copy back in 2012 and haven't gotten a new copy since. Until years later, one of my closest friends within the playgroup gifted me a foil copy of that card for my birthday. To me, that card holds an enormous amount of sentimental value than what it's worth. To this day, it's still in its sleeve and framed on my bedroom wall. If my friend (who gifted me this card) is reading this, thanks bro.

He found the Snapcaster Mage which would give my deck the push it needed, but I didn't have the money to spend (each of those cards is $40!) He really wanted me to keep playing and wanted me to keep enjoying the game, so he bought them for me. And yes, they have helped me win >:)

When I was a preteen, my grandparents bought me an incredibly long, deluxe volume of an obscure manga. Over the years, I had come to expect gifts from them to be a reflection of there desires for me. Things they wanted for me. This really changed things, they had finally listened, and now finally understood me and my interests. This meant a lot to me and my relationship with my grandparents.

Back in 2005 when I was 15 year old, the year the PlayStation Portable came out in the US, I begged my parents for one for Christmas. I asked repeatedly throughout the year and was continually met with no after no, my parents saying it was too expensive. I even asked my sister over and over whether she had any insider knowledge on my Christmas gift and she was so convincing, so deadpan in her repeated telling me no, telling me I was not getting a PSP. I was completely convinced that it was not my fate to own one. Come Christmas when I opened a PSP I was the most excited I'd ever been. I was completely stunned, so surprised and blown away. Hands down best Christmas and, if not the best gift, definitely the most impactful and memorable gift I've ever received.
