i did this with a draft box and got 200 ( box cost me 300) at best but i like cracking packs and spent another 160 buying the singles i want and i think the next set will be singles and a few pre-release kits. the cards i get and like will go into one of many EDH ( 50 plus and counting) decks or go to the binder for future decks.

Stupid question whats teh point of buying something for 250 to collect just to turn around and sell all of it worth anythign for 250 and have nothing but junk left over? as well isnt the point of collecting to have things that you like and enjoy, not to have a value to make money off of? that just sounds like work or profitering or scalping

I think this video helps illustrate the issue players have with CM. It wasn't that there isn't "value" within the set. The price to buy into the set is/was way too high. Commander, being casual and looking mostly for singles, is not a good place to put a product at double the price (or more) of a normal set.
You don't like all these videos where people's whole career and livelihood depend on magic doing well and people not getting sick of it so they release an unbiased video with merchandise provided by Wizards? Whatever man!
Participating in events at an LGS is the best way to collect cards from a new set, plus its fun to play Magic.
@@timlozoya1573exactly the value of the cards being so high isnt the problem. Having a collector item priced so high makes sense but having the price be out of reach defeats the purpose of people buying boxes in the first place. People buy packs to have fun either as draft or lottery. Pricing the "ticket" so high is exactly the reason why opening this set probably isn't doing well it feels bad to spend so much and get so little id rather spend a little and get less. Again boosters appeal to drafters and gamblers nobody wants to pay for a 50$ "ticket"

This is the set that broke my heart as I LOVE commander but I can't afford what may be the best commander set.
Seems like the Prof always makes his money back on the first box. Makes it look like buying boxes is better then singles.
We had 23 players at my LGS in STL on Friday for CM draft. The owner made way more money holding a draft than selling 4 draft boxes (1 of which was just for prize packs) by themselves. ($50/head)
The lack of MSRP is not why these arent $240. If there *was* an MSRP, it would probably be like $480, based on what stores are buying this from distributors for.

The one good thing about how ridiculous it is that as "fun" as the few bomb cards are, most of us would not pay for them, no matter if they are $100, $75 or even "just" $50 - this is and always will be far too much for regular people for a piece of card. However, by having a few of these bomb cards, the shops and investors have to go through 100s of boxes, which means that the vast majority of rares people will use will be opened in huge numbers and bring the prices of the 99% of "good" cards down from $10-20 to $2-5. That's the only positive for normal people from these sets - buy singles.

It's funny that in the time it took to get this video up the price of a set booster box has gotten closer to that 250 price than it is to the 350 he paid.
The best way to spend your money is buying a good printer and proxying all of these cards.

It's probably not worth the effort, but would it be possible to get a list of all of the cards that went into the total for each box (maybe even just the ones over $5) so that it's easier to get a vibe for how spread the value is (or to see that it's all just fierce guardianship and jewelled lotus)
I would never see those first 2 boxes. I would get the 3rd box without the jewled lotus.

The foiling on the old border basic lands looks a little subdued for my taste.
Can i ask why they still come in packs? If everyone is buying by the box it seems like a waste of plastic and packing space.
Thank you for your sacrifice. I think it would be interesting to have a counter number of packs that pay for themselves. It would give an idea how much the box is being carried by the chase cards. A Lotus or bust quotient.

I wouldn't say sacrifice is appropriate here. The prof had 3 incredible boxes of CMM totalling over $1200 in value. Set boosters are down below $250 now. These boxes were the exception, not the rule.

Imagine if this set was $200. It would be a home run. I don't even play Commander but I would buy a few boxes.
People would still complain. This set and all masters sets should be $150 max with standard sets being $100 max. Modern sets like mh2 should fit right in the middle.

If this was $200 every single box in the country would sell out and the stores would be raising their prices to $300 due to demand.

@@ernieels355the list is a selection of thousands of cards across Magic’s history that are reprinted, in the back of set boosters… with only a chance to get them. They have the planeswalker symbol in the bottom left, and they tend to be the most unique version of the card

I wish I lived in a world where my commander master set booster box cost 350, in Quebec they are sold for 600$ CA even when doing the conversion, it's still 446$ us. They say it's the markup for exportation but it's bullcrap if you ask me.
I’m in Ontario and I assure that’s bullcrap. I just checked 401games which operates out of Toronto, it’s one of their many LGS’ and they got a set booster box for $560, but it’s over $600 with tax. I’m literally in a position because the border is a short drive I might make a nice day trip out of it with my doggo to the US and grab a box at an LGS there

At that point just order from a U.S. store and use one of those services where you ship to a temporary U.S. address then to you; even with the extra shipping and taxes it should be cheaper than $600 CAD. I'm not even going to get in to how garbage the conversion rate is.
indeed, the eldrazi unbound commander deck is priced at 180 CAD at my LGS, so 200 CAD with sales taxes :) not a premium product at all
Cheapest I can see for a set box here in the UK is £370, which works out to USD 472 or CAD 634... as our cards are printed in Belgium it's definitely not to do with over-inflated import charges, it's total bullshit that they just charge us the same number of pounds as they do dollars in the US and think that's fine.

The price of each box is insane, but good lord did you hit the jackpot with that second one.
I remember a saying that when Magic boxes get to a certain price, think about how that compares with the prices of the latest consoles as a bit of a deterrent.
In Australia I could buy a new Xbox Series S for less money than one of these booster boxes. A new ps5 with Baldur's Gate 3 and another new game would cost less than two of these boosters. Even Todd Howard's dumb Starfield watch feels like a better deal than this.

That's how I feel about Mystic Remora right now. When I got back into the game about a year ago, it was ~$10. Now it's $2.50 - $3.50. Good stuff.
I think she spiked hard around Neo Kamigawa, probably because of all the new ninja support, and slowly drifted back down until this set's reprints.
It's interesting to see a copy of Maelstrom Wanderer for so cheap as well.
Never made a commander deck for him because I never wanted to pay the $20

This is the set that officially has me on the just buying singles from here on out😅 I’m keeping my preorders because LGS but this set has proven so that singles is the only logical way to play this game

I feel this set should have included fetch and shocklands. Since majority commander decks could really use those boosts.
Probably holding out on the shocks for a future Ravnica set, because those always get printed there

They are reprinting Shocks in Ravinica Remastered coming out next year. And MH3 will probably have the allied fetches.
They did the battle lands at least which have seen fewer printings overall and are arguably better for commander

Remembering in 2016 when from the vaults and anthologies would release quality reprints for less than or around $100
single prices right now are absolutely wonderful! I love the 10, 20, even 30 dollars cards that are now almost bulk (for the time being)! Even bond lands are down there at 3 dollars

This is cathartic watching this. Not opening booster boxes anymore is the correct financial descission.
I’ve always enjoyed buying a box of each set for purposes of expanded my general collection, usually not looking for particular cards, but I like to have a wide assortment at my disposable should I decide to build a deck.
Generally I hope to crack equal value. This set knocked the wind out of me, preordered at $380 for my set box, opened it to find only $230 in cards. I think I’ll be taking a break from sealed product for awhile, as price points keep climbing and returns seemingly diminish.
RIP to your wallet good sir. I fear the same thing would happen to me. I cannot bring myself to buy a box that costs half my paycheck and I don't even have a car OR house payment to pay.
And that 230$ in cards is based on LGS selling or buying list? And keep in ming that this 230$ you calculated is based on release price. Do the calculation in 3 months. And then do the calculation in 2 years when WotC will have reprinted again and again each cards in this set. Even if you had opened 450$ in value on release based on LGS selling prices, in reality, in the long term, you would get ripped off if you would proceed to sell these cards to an LGS.
I was thinking the same when I was into MTG. I justified buying into sealed because I liked the fact that when I wanted to build a deck I had enough cards to do so and most of the time I would only need to purchase a couple singles that i was missing and could go well in the deck. But, doing that, I was still using probably less than 5% of the cards I owned even if i had 15 Commander decks. 95% of cards sitting in my closet, having no purpose, just hope that I will come grab them one of these days. Looking back I think it would have been smarter to just buy singles and stick to a budget. I have probably spent more than 10 000$ on sealed for it to sit in a closet! And would I sell those cards today that I would be far far from recouping that money. WotC as tanked so much of the cards I have (no reserved list) that my collection is now worthless. MTG is too expensive and a waste of money is now my opinion. Looking back I should have stayed away from this game and put that money into something more useful or into some investment portfolio.
A few years back I saved up and bought a box of Master's 25. I got 3 mythics out of it with a combined total of like $20 and I already had a copy of one of those cards. The gambling really isn't worth it, especially at these new insane prices.
Remember the days when video game consoles costed more than cardboard😂. I do love the videos would love to see a video on best mtg products to buy on a budget for 2023. I love playing but product can be suoer expensive

@@willwithanxbox I would hope that's what they actually meant, but when someone says the cheapest jumpstart box, it's good to at least try and help clarify it further when someone could read that, see that the set ones are cheapest without knowing what they are, and getting one for someone with the thought that it was what was being recommended.

I find it hilarious how he is colossally lucky on his pulls, but barely makes the box's worth
I do kind of miss seeing the top card at any time and how it compares with the previous? Any way we can get maybe a spreadsheet of the hits, or maybe a recap? Idk, it's always nice to see but I get it for the people who skip to the end of the video
I like to hit the 10-second skip until I see the price change, then rewind to see which card(s) did it, then fast forward again. ...At 2x speed.
Prof, one thing I notice is how even more single packs are a rip. With a few big ticket items helping to hit the cost, most of the packs you opened didn't even pay for themselves. At $17-25 each, that's a hard pill to swallow.
I decided to get the Starfield Constellation Edition ($300), the new RPG from the creators of Skyrim rather then getting this. Thanks professor! I'll be buying singles instead with the $50 I saved.
Something to note about the price is that you were comparing set booster box pricing to draft booster box pricing. It's still higher for draft booster boxes than it used to be, but it's not as high as was presented.
There was no such thing as set booster when those sets were in print.

I made the mistake of buying 2 set booster cus I got caught up in the hype.
In the two boosters I got.
Cyclonic Rift and The Ur-Dragon. (The regular one. Which is the one I wanted!)
That was in the first pack.
The second pack had a full art arachnogenesis and a full art kindred dominance!
Needless to say there's no reason for me to buy the packs ever again. 😅

Congrats. I got a total of one medallion and 3 cards between 2 and 4 dollars in 5 packs. Rest was bulk.
@behemoth9543 I still need the medallions avacyn and Doubling season and great henge. But since many of those cards are for a deck that I'm trying to build over time ( few months to years depending on how long it takes for me to finalize the list and grab the cards for it) I'm willing to wait a bit for singles.
That and doubling season will also be in wilds of eldrain so might as well wait then for the singlet when that gets yet another re-release.
That first box was like best case scenario, one of the best set boxes I’ve seen. Most aren’t even that close.
Those boxes are pretty good, but the starting price just keeps me from even trying. The ceiling may be high, but the floor is an chasm.
I would love to open up a Full Art Deflecting Swat or Fierce Guardianship, such beautiful cards.

Love love love your videos. But they tend to change juuusst a little bit each time. Early on, any money card would be shown for a while in the corner until the next money card so it could be read and admired. Then it went to just the top earner in the box. Then this video a $60 hit of a Tutor pops up for like 1.2 seconds followed by random flashes of Jeweled Lotus. What's going on? Would love to see a bit more consistency from the editor.
I’ll pick up a set booster every so often because I like the universality of a lot of the cards, and am a glutton for punishment. I’ve gotten pretty lucky considering some of the dud packs in this video.

Honestly I would have been okay with that last box. Lost $50 in value, but got several cards I want to play that are too expensive for me to actually buy. If I got $300 in value but part of that was a Jeweled Lotus, I’d be happy because I got a good card I’d never otherwise have gotten.

350 dollars for this sounds like a stellar deal. Both of my local LGS's are selling them for 650 and 750 a box CAD :(
As somebody who lives in New Zealand and primarily plays Yu-Gi-Oh, where boxes are usually 120 to 150 NZD, reading this comment was kind of terrifying ngl lmao.
