    I'm always a fan of sporting rides, myself. But there's no denying the appeal of being able to cut through people's yards or bounce over highway dividers and such. And I've always liked the notion of this bike. It might not be fast, but it sure is slow. But it is a hammer. You can't break it, and, if you do, you can fix it with the contents of your pockets. I plan to hit the road for an open-ended adventure sometime soon, and this is what I plan to ride.

    "Where that cruiser has to stop when the road turns to gravel".. yep. Riding in the Black Hills all the Harleys turned around, I rode over the mountains and had a lot of fun!

    Have not had mine on the big highway, my secondary highway takes me to the forestry roads i like to ride. Usually do about 65 mph perfectly fine. I agree 100% with all your points.

      Yeah I prefer doing 60mph vs 70 but I think that's just me not the bike. County hwys are just more relaxing then the high highway.

    I have had an 03 and I just bought a new one this year and its I 2017 and I have loved them both. I like the older style just because its more like a dirt bike, but my 17 is amazing in it's own way.

    I love my 1995 KLR650. It has only a 705 big bore kit with proper jetting and FMF slip on to my knowledge. The bike takes me down the highway daily on my 30 mile commute. It costs me under 3 dollars a day (with 93 octane) to ride It 60 miles, handles fine and has enough power to get around. So far my best 0-60 time was 5.8 seconds as tested with the dragy, but I think I can do a bit better. I do wish it had more power, but for what it would cost me to build it up further, I think I’ll just save for an R1M so I can have the best of both worlds!

    I love my klr got it with 800 original miles bone stock or as I like to call it a clean slate you can mod it to suit or not I added bags ,trunk ,shifter and pegs no gps with 6 gallon tank getting lost is half the fun its also the most comfortable bike I've owned and fun

    Totally check mine all the time! just got a set of Shinkos and are going to install today,I have had nothing but stock tires and was wondering about HWY performance but after seeing this I think they will be just fine! Thanks man!

    I am 5’7” and I do fine on my klr. I put a Corbin seat on it and it works great. I bought a 16 tooth sprocket but have not put it on yet.

      Is that lower then the stock seat? I've been thinking about getting a lower one, partially to get closer to the ground but also to get my head lower so I've got more wind protection.

      SWANKY CAT Yes is about 2 or 3 inches lower. I was lucky because it was on the bike when I got it. I got my bike last June with 4000 miles on it. It also came with an upgraded DG exhaust. But now it’s got almost 9000 miles. I am fortunate where I live, there is tons of great places to ride in Ellijay, GA.

    Excessive blinker checker here. If I don't have anything to check, I'll make up something to check. I'm really thinking of buying my first dual sport because I could ride the highways out to my family farm, fill up with gas and go trail riding on the same bike. Sounds like a win/win.

      Ha ha yeah I check mine all the time yet still leave it going somehow. Don't hesitate, dual sport is the way to go if you like street and dirt. I'm on a Tenere 700 now but the same rules still apply, I love it!

    I recently did 725 miles mostly at highway speeds. I might have done triple digits a few times. It was so fun that I did a 250 mile day the next day.

    Just rode my KLR650 some 1500 miles round trip up to Fort Bragg in Northern California from Orange County. It’s remarkable how well this bike does on the open road. True it’s not a speed demon but I can run all day at 75 to 80 miles an hour comfortably. Anytime you want to take a trail just do it! The aftermarket accessories available for this bike are huge. If you want to go on the highway though I recommend a tall windscreen. I’m using the medium size one from national cycle that I really like.

      I am thinking of buying klr 650 . You said it will do 75-80 mph comfortably on open road? I am in Canada it would be like 120 kmh. If it can do it all day I am buying it. 120 kms is that's all I need . I have a sports bike and big cruiser for speed. I want to make a trip to Tuktoyaktuk this summer . I will be riding 900 kms gravel road.

    I rode a KLR about 30 years ago as part of a police motorcycle patrol unit used at a mall. I have nothing but good things to say about KLR650's. Now I want a '22 model for myself.

    I bought a 41k kms 2008 and I thought it was all tractor like and vibration prone. I did the Doo and klx needle n jet kit, added spikey foot pegs and the sw motech crash guards and skid olate aswell as barkbusters and added a cheap muffler... Totally diffetent feel to the bike. The Eagle Mike Doo kit got rid of the tractor sounding vibration, which was the counter balance chain was in need of tension thank Offroad Jesus the doo and apring weren't broken yet just not really functioning anymore. Now she is in fine form. When people buy a used KLR they just need to open the side case and see if the doo has been done or not. Now its time to enjoy the pig. Crap, I have to shim up the cush drive still.

    Truth. I've recently experienced these "tests" you did here just a few weeks ago. I was only on a busy interstate for maybe an hour, 70mph +, the bike was great, the crazy cagers were my concern. Awesome points, ride safe! #klrdelusionals

    Im 21. Just got a 1987 KLR650 as my first bike. Im 6'2 215lb. Any chance I get I will take the bike out through Lancaster County PA hills. Haven't taken it to the dirt yet, plan on doing that this late fall/winter in Trout Run PA. Needless to say, I am excited for what this bike can offer!

    1600 miles a couple years ago, from Sacramento down to Hollister CA (Corbin seat) then over to Monterey and down the coast where I cut inland to Bakersfield, then on to Edwards Air Force base. (where I spent the night) next night was to Davis Monthan Air Force base in Tucson Arizona where I again spent the night and my 3rd day and night was when I arrived at work in Midland Texas. My bike is a 2015 KLR 650, and at the time the "mods" were factory soft luggage, Nomad Rider crash bars and the Corbin Dual Sport dished seat (HIGHLY recommend it over the stock seat, 200 miles is about the most I wanted to ride the stock seat, and 500+ is easy with the Corbin per day)

    I'm torn between a Versys 650 and a KLR650. The KLR is on average 2k cheaper than an equivalent Versys which is a big sell. The biggest hurdle for me is the big single cylinder. How do you rate it vibrating on longer rides? How about oil use? Heard they can be bad. I plan to put on a 16T for more comfortable highway rides.

      There's a lot of theories on the oil burning. Some do, some don't. Thermobob might help, doohickey might help. My gen2 had neither and burned oil when I got it at 9,000 miles.
      As for vibrations, it never really bothered me but the Versys will be smoother and quicker on the road. Really depends where you want the edge. KLR will definitely be more fun off road.

    Your comments are right on. The wind protection, along with heated grips allow me to ride year around here in Ohio. As long as there isn’t snow on the ground.....

    I am looking at one of these to buzz back and forth to work on ...and play a little on weekends. I was curious how this would run on the interstate highway- part of my daily commute takes me through busy 4x4 lane highway. I am just not the cruiser bike type...not my scene. Love the utility of these bikes.

    Not sure about later models but my 2012 KLR seat was a killer.
    After 60 miles the seat turns into a vinyl covered ass eating shark.
    Other than that the bike was awesome.

    One question I have not been able to find the answer to is how this bike travels at speeds like 80-85mph. Where I live, that's the safe highway cruising speed to keep up with traffic. But every review I've seen doesn't comment upwards of 70-75mph.

      We don't have any speed limits over 70 here...but a "friend" told me its not great above 75, rides fine but motor does sound/feel overworked at that speed. However it probably just seems that way and is actually fine. Scratch Babble has some high speed videos on the freeway and talks about how it does over 70mph if you want to check him out.

    i had a drz as well, looking at a klr now. most of my drz trails were roads anyway, and the highway was not pleasant at all with the drz... ok in town, but terrible on anything outside of that... i should say bareable in town.

      I actually just picked up an XR650L now and I'm pretty excited to set it up with a tall fairing and other ADV accessories. With the stock gearing it actually seems happier at highway speeds than the KLR ...

    National Cycle makes windshields that don't break like the Zero Gravity line. A real skidplate and a flush flat head oil drain screw is important if you ride off road.

      Don't need a different screw if you go with the ricochet plate. Just incase anyone was leaning toward that skid plate.

      Nice, ahh hard to say. Seems like the new one will definitely have some good upgrades but without riding one it's hard to say if the added cost of being new is worth it. I suppose it also depends what the used prices look like in your area.

    Great video Ben, thanks for making it. I have heard that the KLR will burn oil when running at freeway (high) speeds for more than a few hours. Have you (or anyone else) had that problem? Or do you think it might have been addressed in the 2014 1/2 make-over?

      I've heard that oil burning is caused by an improper break in. If thats true, then mine was not broke in correctly as it does burn oil. Annoying but not a deal breaker for me. I've heard BMWs are the same way so I just tell myself it's a high class thing haha.

      My 14.5 burns no oil. I drove 4 hrs on i75 in Michigan at about 75/80 mph.

      Cayoot I have a 2009 with 8500 miles. I put 4000 miles on this last 9 months and a lot of highway. I do not have the oil burning problem.

      I know this is old but my '10 burned oil like the drain plug was loose. Big thumpers tend to burn oil and there were issues with the bore and cooling system

    From zero to 60 there is not alot of difference between a KLR and Harley. I've had both. As far a comfort there a alot off difference. The KLR is the most comfortable bike I have owned. And I've owned alot.

    I have a 2018 klr just hit 1000 miles I’ve only been riding interstate and town roads love it only complaint is the seat is terrible

      @@SwankyCatProductions I had a 2000 KLR and spent all kinds of money trying to find a seat solution that was comfortable. I finally settled on some kind of gel insert and bitching about it to anyone who'd listen, which helped. My new 2018's seat is a La-Z-Boy recliner by comparison, so I have no complaints.

      You people haven't rode on bicycle seats, a $5000 Italian Road bike seat feels like a medieval anal torture implement, a KLR seat is Lazy boy compared to bicycle seats.

    I'm a 50 something year old 6 foot 5 guy looking to buy his first motorcycle. It seems like this would be a good one. I like it. How serious is the matter that it lacks ABS?

      I'm 5'10" and the KLR is a bit on the tall/heavy side for me but at your height I would think this would be a good first motorcycle. Personally I prefer a bike to not have ABS, fewer things to break the better. Also I like to have full control over the bike and don't want it to make any decisions for me. However I have been riding for 10 years and perhaps ABS would be good for a new rider?

      Just keep good brake pads and good tires on it. When the rear tire starts getting bald, the rear is more likely to lock up. I run Shinko 244 tires, they are very cheap and easy to replace.

      They're cheap, easy to mess with, fun to ride, can't go wrong getting one. I'm 60yrs old, 6'4". If you do decide on a KLR invest in some JNS foot peg lowering mounts and Seat Concepts "tall" seat and ROX 2" risers under some Pro Taper ATV high bend bars. World of difference! This is my secondary ride as I also have a Vulcan Nomad 1700 but I love riding the KLR, just can't be seen by my "biker" buddies :)

      Height shouldn't be a problem for you. I'm 63, been riding for 51 years, 5' 8" tall. I can get my toes on the ground, and that's all I need. Being a beginner at your height, you will have little problem with this bike. I have owned sport bikes with ABS and never activated it. That's with some pretty aggressive riding. You're not going to come anywhere needing ABS with a KLR. Even with the most aggressive knobbies you will quickly learn that they can be ridden on the street with little problem. Don't let the ABS thing become an issue.

    Great video,answered several questions I'd always wondered about the KLR for road duty. If you don't mind my asking (because you look close ot my size),what's your height/weight. I'm 5'9" and about 165,never bought a KLR because of it's weight (vs mine),but my current bike weighs 430lbs wet (CB500X)--I'd obviously be thinking of doing more offroad on a KLR than I do my current scoot though . Thanks in advance :)

      Thank you I'm glad the video was helpful! I'm 5'10" and 160 and the KLR is a bit heavy and not a great off road bike for someone newer to off roading like a was when I first got it. But after three years and a lot of practice I'm a lot more confident on it. While I have a ways to go I take it on trails now that I wouldn't have dreamed of a year ago. I think of it as an adventure bike rather then an enduro and with that expectation in mind I think its the best value for the money!

    Seems like people either love the KLR or hate it. There doesn't seem to be any mid ground. Like you I have to ride 2 hours to the mountains and the KLR can handle it fine then still be effective off road. Of course you could by a Tiger XCA , F850 GS, KTM 690 etc.. but these bikes are so over priced I,d go with the KLR every time. Cheap to buy. Cheap to fix. Easy to work on.

    I just bought the exact same bike except mine is stock, the guy I bought it from put street tires on it but those are getting switched to Continental TKC 80's next week.

      I've owned 3 CBRs, two were 600 RRs, a DRZ400, a few faster cruisers and the KLR is by far my favorite. However I do take mine off road just about every ride I go on. If your not into that something more road worthy might be better.

    I've had three kahler's so far in my lifetime and I love it, but I have a question if anyone can answer it, for the first time my Foote street tires on my KLR 2015 and I'm still a bit afraid of cornering!
    Has anyone experienced the same thing and is it safe?

      Big bore thumper Torque machines don't need 6 speeds like a little 125cc or 80cc 2 stroke MX bike. Long gears because it has the TQ to pull it short ratio six speed is for machines that lack TQ. The KLR has allot of TQ.

    Are you running the stock 15 tooth front sprocket? 70-75 is the fastest I would be traveling on the interstate and that looks quite manageable at those rpms. Do you think a 16 tooth would noticeably affect your off road abilities?

      Martin Parr sounds like he's still running 15t,16t does hamper off road but can easily be used even in sand with a good clutch hand.Ive used 14t,15t and a 16t.i prefer the factory tooth count 15t as a good all around compromise.

      I've been considering a 16 tooth but I'm worried that I would not like it off road. And off road is where I want it to perform best. Sounds like AlabamaDS knows from experience that that is the case.

      I use a 16T front sprocket.. Love it on the street, and although I've only been off-road a handful of times with this bike, I've had no problems at all. Unless you are climbing Rocks (babyheads or bowling ball size) and really need to creep, I don't see where the 16T would cause a problem.. just means a little more clutch use. I've learned from experience that being too timid or overly cautious off-road can actually make the trek harder for yourself. I only creep when necessary, and try to use my momentum to help carry the bike over obstacles.. ride with a rhythm and stand up when it gets rough, and let your knees bend as your suspension. If you've ever ridden mountain bikes or dirt-bikes off road, that experience helps tremendously and still applies even though this is a larger, heavier bike. Even with the 16T, I'm mostly in second gear off-road, and Swanky you would be too.

    This is why I'm here. I have the DR650, love it, but it sucks so bad on the highway, very uncomfortable seat. Comparing the drz to the KLR what is your opinion?

      The KLR felt more planted and comfy on long high speed rides compared to my DRZ. I would think the only big difference between a DR650 & a KLR (other than the seat) would be the wind protection, which is nice. But to be honest, I've always thought the ideal bike would be a DR650 with a rally fairing, a new seat and a bigger tank. Then you've got the comfort of the KLR without the added weight and lack of HP.

      @@SwankyCatProductions that's what I suspect. I don't want to give up on my DR, but anything over an hour ride becomes not fun. That said, it's such a tractor and is so damn fun it's hard to stop riding it.

      Yeah I can imagine. I loved my KLR but I don't think I'd ever trade a DR for one. I'd just get an aftermarket seat and see where that gets you. Wind protection makes a big difference in my book too.

    U mentioned you had a drz before. I have a klr and predominantly ride offroad. 10-40minutes on road depending on the trail goal. I'm looking for a lighter better offroad bike with klr reliability. Did your drz feel more capable and lighter offroad? Single track real deep mud type stuff.

      I wasn't very off road experienced when I was on the DRZ so I can't say for sure. But now I've got a Honda XL250R and it is much easier to ride off road in the rough stuff. But personally with the hour trips I need to take to get off road I ride the KLR WAY more often.

      Have the DRZ and in the trail, it is the bike to have. But on the highway to gets to the trails it is not so fun. I'm looking to buy a KLR as well to have both experience. Every biker should have both the KLR and the DRZ hahaha.....

    So there's a 2016 KLR650 with 40K miles locally to me that seems to have few upgrades like side bags (alum ones) and few other things like wider pegs etc. a 2016 with 40k miles sounds like it was driven alot… It's for sale at a dealer and has been "serviced" with some brand new 50/50 looking Bridgestone tires. It's for sale at $3,000 USD. Is this too much money?

      I bought my 14.5 (Essentially the same thing) back in 2016 with 9,000 miles for $3,750. Had an FMF pipe and Barkbusters. I would pass on that to find a lower mileage one personally. 40K is a lot for a single cylinder.

      Never been on a V strom. I'd assume the KLR wouldn't be as much fun or as fast. For me it's worth it when you get off road though.

    Really interested in getting a kit 650 I’ve seen lots for sale. How risky is buying one older then 2010 with over 30km on It? I’m planing on taking a big trip and am wondering if I should strictly buy newer. Any feedback is appreciated

      I'd try to stick with something 2014.5 or newer if you can. I bought mine used with 10k miles and have had no issues in the last 7k.

    I am still a new rider. Did you say that the best way to approach a curve is high rev on low gear? Real question, trying to learn.

      I'll usually drop a gear before heading into a turn yes (depending on current speed and rpm). The reason I do this is to get the motor into a higher rpm and within the powerband (usually upper 1/3 of the tachometer) so I'm able to accelerate as I go through the turn. In most cases you'll go into a turn slow and accelerate out. This is not necessary to make the turn and isn't something I'd recommend doing before you get steady speed turns down. Hope that helps!

    How does a 2008 KLR 650 compare to the one you have? (I just bought a 2008 klr650 with 8100 miles.

      More or less the same. The original design had the headlight that moved with the forks. Then they updated them to the more ADV style. Then in 2014.5 they put stiffer springs and a different seat on it. Most parts are pretty universal other then some slight internal motor changes.

      It's not the most stable bike at high speeds but for its size and dirt oriented set up I don't think its to awful.

      There is an easy way to improve the 0-60 MPH time of the KLR... sell it and get a bike with some power. Jeez even a SV650 has about 70HP (max) at the rear wheel. 100 MPH top speed of the KLR650 is not very impressive since you wont have much passing power at highway speeds.

    Cruiser has to stop when the road turns to gravel? I'm going to stop you right there... I followed dirt bikes on a Rebel 250, and while I did have to get off the bike and lift it over obstacles that they rode over, I still made it. It's not so much about whether it can be done as it is how easily. I rode my Ninja 650 from the east coast to Colorado for a week of camping, stopping only for gas, and I did dirt and gravel on Pirelli Angels while there, even conquering a few moderate hill climbs in the loose stuff. Granted, I couldn't tear down bumpy gravel roads like guys with more wheel travel, but I always reached my destination without incident. Guys on dual sports will inevitably scoff at guys like me doing light off roading on bikes that were not designed for it, yet they also like to discuss how well their bikes can handle paved curves despite not being designed specifically with twisties in mind... The fact is that every bike involves compromises, and while some will outperform others in specific circumstances, just about any bike will take you where you want to go within reason.

      Well... your not wrong... I suppose technically I could take my wife's Hyundai Elentra off roading too... but I think I'll stick with my Silverado on MTs... but that's just me.

      Similarly, while you may feel your KLR corners well, I'll stick with my Ninja. But, that's just me. Different bikes appeal to different people for different reasons. Some guys ride bikes that don't really do much of anything well, but they like the way it looks, and if that's what is most important to them, there's nothing wrong with that. I just take exception to comments such as your remark about cruisers having to stop at gravel, which would be sort of like saying KLRs have to turn back when the pavement gets twisty. I like to do some offroading, but I ride mostly on the street. I clicked on this video because I'm trying to decide on a more dirt oriented third bike. My daily rider needs to be a street bike, but I want something a little better suited for dirt on stand by. I'm torn between adventure, dual sport, or a dedicated dirt bike. Each has advantages and disadvantages. If money was no object, I would probably have at least one bike from every existing category and it still wouldn't be enough.
      My '88 Toyota on 7 inches of lift and 38s, 5.71:1 ring and pinions and Detroit lockers eats Silverados in the woods, by the way...

      I'm not really sure where your going with all this... I'm happy for you, your three bikes and your truck, good for you I guess? Your entitled to your own opinion but the KLR is designed for both on and off road riding. Sport bikes and cruisers are not. I wasn't personally calling you out and I couldn't care less about what you do with your bikes. I've ridden both cruisers and sport bikes off road as well and that's precisely why I sold them and purchased my KLR. Good luck with your bike search, I hope you find what you're looking for.

      KLR is designed for both, but really excels at neither, as with most compromises. It definitely wasn't designed with hard cornering on pavement in mind, and anyone who thinks it was is deluded. I'm not going anywhere with this, I simply objected to your insistence that cruisers have to stop when the roads turn to gravel, which is pretty ridiculous. You're the one who went into your wife's grocery getter and your Silverado (good for you, I guess), so I just went along. If you've ridden cruisers and sport bikes off road, you should know they don't have to stop when the pavement ends. You come across like a guy who is trying to justify his purchase, which shouldn't be necessary if you know what you want and have it.

      I never claimed the KLR was designed for hard cornering? I literally said in the video that it will not corner like a sport bike but that it's still fun. And of course you COULD take a sport bike or a cruiser off road, just like you could take a car off road. Which I think is a pretty fair comparison as they both lack ground clearance, skid plates and off road tires. In my opionion a KLR shouldn't even be taken anywhere off road where it might get dropped unless it's got a good set of crash bars. Maybe that's just me being over cautious but I'd rather not smash up my plastics and radiator. I'm not usually known for defending my purchases, in fact I have a video titled "Three Reasons Not To Buy A KLR". I try to be up front and honest about it because Kawasaki doesn't pay me to sell there bikes, adsense does when videos like this get views.

    You’re lucky there was no oncoming traffic, it would have been more than embarrassing.
    Better practice your counter steering, especially with a tall bike with a 6 gallon tank, before you end up going off the shoulder or get in a head on.
