The 2 genres work so well together! Also the reason they mess about so much in mash is because war is bad. if they didn't show how bad it actually gets then it would have just been an empty laugh machine. The seriousness is what keeps us invested in the world.
In this episode we saw Millie acknowledge Loona as a person, more than just a hellhound (treated like dogs and lower than imps), after Millie refusing to call Loona anything more than "hellhound". And we saw Loona being kind to Moxxie, knowing what he loves and even giving him ice cream after she spent most of S1 calling him fat.
yeah season 1 episode 1 Millie says to Moxxie "Be Careful, you're going to shoot our only Hellhound!" and Loona replies, "Gee, Thanks....I feel so appreciated."
“Why is a fish monster running an terrorizing a hotel” This is the same universe where the literal princess of Hell runs a hotel and The Devil from the bible has an obession with ducks that can give Blitz’s horse fetish a run for its money
Rolando the fish demon honestly feels the most demon-like demon we’ve seen in a while. Not only his cruel attitude, but also all the supernatural powers he pulls out that we normally haven’t seen outside of Alastor and Stolas. Most demons just feel like normal dudes with a few magic tricks
@@Storm-_-rider I mean the fist two episodes seem to imply that Imps have MINOR Pyrokinesis, with Blitz and Millie not being hurt by Martha's fire, and the Carnie lighting up a dollar like a cig with his thumb in Loo Loo Land. But that may have been forgotten. Plus we've seen plenty of other Hellborn, although I honestly can't tell if Verosika/Succubi have some charm magic or if Helluverse humans are just THAT easily aroused. AND, we've seen other fish demons in Chaz and the Glam sisters
@ i did forget that tho we have Sean imps be Brent with fiz and blitz scars Tho that might explain y they are above hell hounds in the hierarchy I’m 90 percent sure it’s charm magic
Fun fact! Most of the fish demons are from the envy ring, which is all one big ocean, ppl theorized that their powers where possesing people, and turns out they where right Edit: Watch the new cartoon universe video about envy for more clarification
I love everything about Helluva Boss. The comedy, the drama, the trauma. It's everything I could ask for and I love that it's entertaining and emotionally damaging.
I think his point is that it doesn't seem to manifest itself beyond what anyone else in hell has to deal with so it doesn't seem any worse than what other demons deal with. I mean there are also IMP celebrities. There are IMPs partying it up with some of the Sins like Bee. There are IMP mafia bosses that seem to control a lot territory and power. So this was like the first time what Blitz is doing is told to us that it is ground breaking for an IMP.
“You want to F*** this one, too!!” As she slings their butler at him. Pretty much straight from a racist slave-owner playbook. Talking about him like he’s an object or an animal. To be fair he did say he could see the imp abuse from the royalty but not from other demons. I feel the best example of other demon prejudices was the Envy demon woman and her offspring in the hospital in “Western Energy”.
To be fair though, she is screaming the entire line, so it sounds like she'd be (reasonably before you find out how terrible she is) more upset about stolas cheating/ it happening in their bed, then about him cheating on her with an imp
Regarding the thing about Millie seeing Blitzø as bulletproo and unbothered, I think it’s more about her seeing him as this guy who can just take all the knives that’s thrown at him by life and keep standing with that silly grin on his face, rather then him literally being unbothered by everything.
Yeah, like he acts angry and all but rarely takes things to his heart, so this was the first time since she met him that he really was deeply affected by something
Also like, all his insecurities _Millie_ hasn't seen, canonically. Moxie had the interrogation scene and Loona has a few, but Millie legitimately has never seen him upset I don't believe.
Exactly. The old saying "rolling with the punches" doesn't mean the punches don't make contact, after all! It just means you can use the momentum from **taking** the "punch" to get back up and keep moving!
That is what I thought, to Millie when she sees Blitzø get upset or angry, he quickly dusts himself off and shoots back with a snappy comeback at whoever got him riled up. This is the first time Millie saw Blitzø not able to recover from something that upset him which is why that and Blitzø pretty much saying he loves Stolas without actually saying the words “I love Stolas” shows that Blitzø and Stolas are going to eventually get back together and Stolas is Blitzø’s endgame romance.
15:41 I feel like there's actually a lot of hints: Blitz's dad not hesitating to sell him (even though a lot of that is him being a shitty dad but I doubt it's an uncommon occurrence for imps), Crimson being a mafia boss and yet is still broke, Striker living in an abandoned mine shaft, Blitz's disgust when Stolas refers to him specifically as his imp, the way Stella throws their butler around, the way even Stolas physically abuses that butler, the imps serving tea and being waiters, even the one in a lady's purse during Western Energy. The main reason it might not be stated outright is because this is a show about the outliers, the weirdos who don't fit in with the social status quo. Blitz refuses to acknowledge that he's lower than anyone else and doesn't let them push him around so we don't see how other imps are treated. Even with Fizz, he's valuable so he's looked up to and has a higher social status as a famous entertainer. As for the whole "imps not getting kicked out of restaurants just for being imps" thing, plenty of marginalized groups are ALLOWED places but you can definitely tell if you're socially welcome. If you notice, there's not a lot of imps there. And those who are, besides our main cast (and Stolas's butler) are working, not attending.
15:41 I got so confused here, cause I wasn’t looking and was just listening, so hearing Danny repeat the exact same line 3 times tripped me up. He didn’t even mess up that first time, they all sounded the same 😂
As soon as I watched this, all I could think of was how Danny was going to react. This episode was fantastic with the dynamic between Millie and Blitzø. We really needed their background and someone to really lay it down for him.
16:04 one thing i havent seen ppl point out yet regarding the classism is during the harvest moon festival, when stolas refers to all the imp farmers and labourers as "tiny wrath ring imps", and when he says "celebrating the spoils of your labour that continue to feed the citizens of hell", the crowd imps look more than peeved. In conjunction with this being the striker episode, this implies there's a more low-key unrest and hatred that imps - especially those in wrath - harbour for the elite. Because, even though Stolas doesn't intend anything bad by it, comments like that imply that imps always have their people reduced to being obedient little workers, people who are seen as lesser despite how important their contributions are to society. And in a way, the wrath games are their way of celebrating the fact that they can be strong and bloodthirsty
"The show itself never does anything with that." Nevermind Striker, or Blitzø's dad selling him to Stolas, or Imps being frequently shown in jobs usually filled by the working poor irl (such as working for the circus, as a servant, or as farmers) with a few exceptions such as Moxxie's family (which is a criminal enterprise that's gone bankrupt), or the only way I.M.P. can afford to go to the human realm is through the whims of literal nobility, and even then they have to go in a van that could fall apart at a gust of wind. Its been in the show the whole time, its just been subtext.
To be fair, Blitz's dad selling him to a rich family came across more carnie/circus folk practices. Cause they are paid to entertain rich pricks all the time
While I definitely agree with your points, (in my opinion) if classism is going to be a main theme in your show, it needs to be shown in more things other than the subtext. Even one or two moments of on screen serious shots of classism would make these scenes so much better. I can understand the scenes being in the subtext if this was an underlying theme but seeing as how it's becoming a main theme, I feel like they need or should've shown more of it rather than making us draw our own conclusions and making us search for it.
Damn, I just realized: Blitz being the only self-employed IMP, now technically under the jurisdiction of Osmodeus thanks to the lust crystal, adds even more layers to his blowout fight with Stolas
Blitz isn't the only or the first self-employed imp we see though? Ignoring the fact Millie was previously a freelancer (and therefore technically self employed), Both Moxxie and Blitz's dad are shown to be self employed/business owners as the owner of a circus and the leader of a crime family/syndicate respectively.
@@dajh5192 I would argue that Millie sounded more like a contractor than just a freelancer, like she might've worked under a supervisor who distributed hits but no longer got assignments due to an overabundance of workers. Blitz's dad also could've worked under a larger company more as a manager rather than owner, and even if he didn't, you could argue that being a circus owner isn't very "respectable," and it also puts Imps in an entertainment/plaything position. Same thing with Moxxie's dad, being a crime lord is impressive and commands respect in the way of fear, but it isn't an "official" occupation and kinda runs off of being underground and in the shadows of society. None of these jobs are particularly glamorous or enviable.
@@IzzyRoseDoesArt I dont see how it's less respectable to be a crimelord or a circusowner than what Blitz is doing? I.M.P is fundamentaly is just hitmen for hire. Just like striker, Blitz just has more people involved in it that's it.
Millie wasn’t pissed because he broke up with her but because he did something real shitty to her and also won’t mind his own business Also now because she found out what he did to Moxxie
Brandon Rodgers (aka Blitzø) said this specific episode meant so much to him as he played a huge part into writing this episode with Vivzie & her team. It still has it’s corky moments, but it was still a good episode for development with Blitzø along with Millie too (as she deserves it so much) & where the story is so far as in the drama on Blitzø's end of dealing with the end of his arrangement with Stolas as well as the possibility of I.M.P officially going out of business from bankruptcy to the higher up demons finding out that this illegal imp owning business exist (as Moxxie & Loona were taking care of while the others were on Earth).
That's the point. Danny is very slow. There is obvious evidence of discrimination in the show but he's too oblivious to actually see it. Just like the owl
He is voiced by John Waters which explains him being a fish (also I believe it’s in the Envy ring that the fish looking demons are from like those Clown Twins from the clown competition!)
Danny, Striker's entire deal with Blitz is that Blitz is a “trailblazer” just like what he wants to be and why he worked with Mox’s dad because he's also an Imp who is a “trailblazer”
Danny, we already knew Blitz was a trailblazer for making his own business as an imp, we first learned that when Stryker was introduced, way back when we met Millie's family.
Striker saying that didn't even register if I can be honest. Felt like a throwaway line of flattery from a dude trying to be everyone's best friend. As for Stolas' dad, honestly that felt less societal and more like Blitzo's dad's sleazy. Plus, and this is something I felt a bit confused about, that felt more like he paid to have a playdate that Blitzo's dad agreed to less out of obligation to societal higher-ups and threats of violence than the desire to rob him blind. Which then makes the threat of reprisal feel less serious that they could try pulling off such a shadey scheme without consequence.
@@josephwilliams1251... The thought of the matter is you just ignored it. It was pretty obvious that there is class of discrimination going on but you didn't see it. You have imps working in either servant positions or as farm hands. Let's even point out earlier that the imps aren't considered important by higher up demons
also he goes on a full on rant during the episode where he kidnaps stolas about how blue bloods are always trying to take advantage of people under him and blitzo did the same thing during full moon
I do think you have a good point about how much of the show's lore exists outside of the actual show. Hazbin has a similar problem, where there's just *so much* of the lore and worldbuilding that's been addressed by word of god and not actually in the texts of the series.
It's such a big problem that so much of the fandom seems to just take for granted, which really makes parsing the shows' actual content so difficult. Like, I don't care what Vivzie said three, six, ten years ago one character or another; treating that kinda stuff like gospel implies that she, as a creator, isn't allowed to change her mind or refine her ideas over time, and that's just completely unfair and unhelpful to view the content the shows actually have with outside, possibly unused information.
The problem is that Boss takes a long time to make. Of course, all this will be explained in the future. Of course, all this explains in the future. If it were not an indie show that comes out episodically. What is behind the show is simply answers to impatient fans(most of the information is outdated because it was said before episode 1 of season 1). I kind of enjoy how Loona’s insults for Millie and Moxxie are Grandma and Fatty, both of which are so inaccurate that everyone is always slightly confused about how she came up with it.
So as to explain why there have been fish creatures, the ring of envy is a giant ocean, and the sin of envy is Leviathan. And the infester demon invades people minds and weaponizes their memories. And utilizing someone else’s mind is more of an envy ability
Striker when he meets Blitz talks about how it’s impressive for one of “their kind” to own a business, calls Stolas a “blue blood” and “filthy prince” It’s a big deal that Stolas would be “sleeping with an imp” when he’s seen on a date with Blitz in Ozzie’s Hell Mammon threatens to tell everyone to at Asmodeus and Fizz are together because it’s supposed to be secret cause one is an imp and one is a sin The class thing is brought up a lot
@@seeleunit2000 Everyone knew that Oz and Fizz were fucking, but they were trying to hide their love. Oz isn't supposed to be in love, which is why when one of Oz's succubi caught them romantically teasing each other, they switched to an erotic position saying they were just having "an unemotional bang sesh". When Oz did admit that he loved Fizz, one of the texts sent was "Oz is fucking Fizz LOVINGLY?!"
It never really occured to me that the classism in the show actually is subtle. I'm glad they went more direct with it at this stage so everyone was really brought in on that point
To be honest, I appreciate both the drama and the humor. Both are important aspects of the show, and I think I like the idea of shorts focusing on the comedy and the actual episodes focusing on the drama.
I haven't seen anyone comment on the fact that it's kind of a reversal of Blitzø's usual snack of hot sauce on cheese. The ice cream he was eating was Carolina Reaper flavor.
Danny, i think you forgot that striker told blitz how impressed he was that he started a business on his own, as an imp and also how bad hellhounds are treated. since episode one with millie not treating loona as a person but more like a pet, and well when blitz adopted her, she was on a dog pound and about to be killed
Loona was not about to be killed. She was about to age out of the system, aka be sent out into the streets. Blitz didn't save her life, but he did save her from feeling that no one wanted her or could love her.
15:50 when it comes to the classism themes, yes it should probably be adressed more. But it is still there. In the episode stolas gets kidnapped theres a higher class demon with a small pet imp in her handbag. Stolas accidentally abuses his imp servant. Im sure there are other times as well.
You don't have to say accidentally, he can have flaws 😭 I'm pretty sure he just doesn't give a fuck about them and won't admit it. "I can't be racist! I have a black friend," basically.
@@liquidtoothpaste I think you can say it's accidental in that he doesn't *mean* to cause them harm... but the reason why is because he doesn't even really realize they're there. He's so used to them just being there he just treats them like furniture instead of people, he doesn't think about them at all. I think a big way to show the classism is that whevener we see Demons in a "servant" position, they're *always* Imps. The butlers at Stolas' house, the workers at Loo Loo Land, the waiters at the restaurants, the farmers in Wrath... they're all Imps. All the jobs that give some power or require more education like secretaries, lawyers, nurse, doctors... they're never Imps, always other types of Demons. The most powerful Imp we've seen in the show is Crimson, and the fact that he's a ruthless criminal who can just kill anyone who gives him shit probably is why he can somewhat bypass the class system.
i mean there was that fish woman with her child when Blitz took Loona to get her shots, her kid called Blitz a fire toad and his mom told them that he should only say that when they arent around and then proceeds to call blitz a filthy wrathian so its not like there isnt obvious racism, its just in a way that makes it a side plot to the main plot
Stolas coping: deep thinking, focusing on other interests instead of dwelling on the problem. Results: gains emotional capacity to talk to, discuss, and even sing about ex. Blitz coping: wallow in self pity, watch shitty tv. Results: still is a hot mess, but hey, he gets to dress slutty and go on a ghost hunt!!
... It sounds like the rest of you are "coping." I can't wait for the episode where the owl is going to get dragged through the coals. It will be so cathartic
Stolas coping: Drunk off his ass, glass of wine at 10 am, relying on his "happy pills." Stolas is just as fucked up as Blitzø, just you wait. Guarantee the reason he's late for the meeting next episode ("Where is Stolas anyways? We must summon him at once") is because he's fucking hungover or already drunk. The first thing he did at Verosika's party was drink, and he continued to drink heavily the entire party.
"It wasn't a break up! You have to have a relationship for that and we never did. And now we never will" *cry laughing* 🎶 Everyday, it's getting closer....🎶
The mother burning up in this episode, was the most devastating and well done animation that has ever been made in this show. I felt so panicked watching that happen, even though I knew it was a dream
I also struggled for quite some time to see the classism in this show. It took watching several videos that broke it down for me to understand it. I’m glad that they’re making it less subtle now.
Ngl, I kinda don't love how things need to be spelled out for the audience nowadays. Subtle themes in shows and movies are what make media analysis so fun and being told explicitly what the story is about feels very handholdy.
@@anothermiddleschoolburnout8816 I don't think the problem with this show is that it's being subtle; the problem is that it's been wildly inconsistent. I think Danny touched on it a couple times before, but this show (and it's a problem Hazbin has as well) really struggles with deciding which issues they want you to take seriously and which ones get to be the punchline of jokes. It's a good thing, in this case, that they're finally committing to a certain approach, because up until now it's been flip-flopping between 'haha silly goof' and 'we're being serious now', and I don't think you can really blame the audience for wanting (and benefitting) from that kind of clarification.
@@Cobalt360Degreesevery jokes are set ups for the future, therefore they are funny and makes sense in terms of the plot. What is problem? You just need to wait
I think what you are explaining at the end of this really does prove a point I have argued with friends that having genuinely bad behaviour or serious topics happen in a show and having them addressed is far more impactful than shying away from them or glossing over the addressing of something off screen or in a time skip
i just noticed that in 11:51 when his mom burns its actually the same flames that she died in aka when Blitz accidentally set the circus on fire. Thats why they were all like "You hurt everyone that you get close to" because he prolly blames himself for his moms death, which is also the reason he never wanted to be an item with Stolas cuz he was scared that if he got too close he'll hurt him.
I'd much rather watch an artists true vision than something made to satisfy the people complaining about their work. I really hope Viv doesn't get pressured into changing anything because the "fans" are pushing for it.
It's so helpful to watch you react to this, as someone who is obsessed with this show. It's very helpful to see how someone watching it more "casually" perceives and engages with it it. Because the class stuff w/ imps is very much in the show before this; you don't have to have supplemental material to understand it. It's very much in the fabric of the universe - something that the characters take for granted and therefore rarely said out loud (much like racism and classism in our world). It's also Striker's whole deal, and Striker even mentions the significance of Blitzo owning his own business. But stuff like this is mentioned in such a flash, that it's easy to miss if you're not pouring over details like a lot of us are. So it's helpful to see someone react so strongly to the realization of class struggle in Hell, when that part of it was somewhat redundant to me/some of us. Anyway, I'm just rambling, lol. But I always love your vids; thanks for the content you make!
I actually find it so interesting discussing the class divide and classism/racism in helluvaboss with ppl because (and this is in no way a dig at anyone) privileged ppl don't seem to notice it in the show. Straight white dudes seem to miss it almost entirely, where the more intersectionally marginalized a person is the more they seem to notice all the little micro/macro aggressions and moments.

I love everything about Helluva Boss. The comedy, the drama, the trauma. It's everything I could ask for and I love that it's entertaining and emotionally damaging.
Stella throwing an imp servant across the room “I can’t believe you slept with an IMP in our fucking BED!”
Danny: “what classism?”
To be fair Stella is mad about everything Stola does 🤷🏻♀️
Asmodeus publicly shaming at him fucking an IMP. Stolas's dad literally buying an imp child for like change and a condom?
Yeah, he always takes a punch and while he does double over, he says “fuck you” and rolls his eyes.

Some people clearly don't pick up on subtext
To be fair, Blitz's dad selling him to a rich family came across more carnie/circus folk practices. Cause they are paid to entertain rich pricks all the time
Fr I was listening to him yap and just thinking “does he actually watch the show or just react to it.?”
@@ilikejuce What exactly can the show do to make it MORE explicit lol
Danny: "I'm gonna need you to hold your horses"

I’m in the third group: I want to see how the drama unfolds, but I also love tf out of the jokes.
I think the best shows have both humor and drama. If it's only humor, it gets boring, and if it's only drama, it gets exhausting.
Damn, I just realized: Blitz being the only self-employed IMP, now technically under the jurisdiction of Osmodeus thanks to the lust crystal, adds even more layers to his blowout fight with Stolas
stolas definitely is naive to how dangerous of a position blitz is in
Blitz isn't the only or the first self-employed imp we see though?
Millie wasn’t pissed because he broke up with her but because he did something real shitty to her and also won’t mind his own business
Also now because she found out what he did to Moxxie
The seen where Blitzø says "NO MOOOM" Almost made me cry shit was emotional as hell
Strike, Millie's parents, and Crimson all complimented Blitz for running his own business
Blitz was established as a trail blazer by Striker in Harvest Moon. Striker was saying it to manipulate Blitz, but it was also true.
Hell even STRIKER is working for demon royalty as he says it. Even Striker can’t work for himself as he says it. But Blitz does
And now, when Millie walked in we saw a bunch of imps working there. They've inspired imps to try to start businesses, and not just that, in pride!

Danny, we already knew Blitz was a trailblazer for making his own business as an imp, we first learned that when Stryker was introduced, way back when we met Millie's family.
… Danny. This is brought up all that time. Striker complemented Blitzo for running his own business. Stolas’s Dad literally bought him.

Totally... However, I do love when they let us sink on a character's particular behavior only to then reveal why they act that way.
Blitz introducing M and M, then them getting married - it makes sense that Blitz would feel left out and want what they have.
And utilizing someone else’s mind is more of an envy ability

and also how bad hellhounds are treated. since episode one with millie not treating loona as a person but more like a pet, and well when blitz adopted her, she was on a dog pound and about to be killed
Loona was not about to be killed. She was about to age out of the system, aka be sent out into the streets. Blitz didn't save her life, but he did save her from feeling that no one wanted her or could love her.

If I was a big demon I too would have an imp in my handbag 😅

@@liquidtoothpasteliterally??

Agreed, my man!

@tanyaf9855 great point

Well good news, going off of how chill Millie and Blitzo were with finding out who (or what) he was, there is an entire species of those guys. They might return.
I think you forgot to put this in your Helluva Boss playlist.
15:40 OK DANNY WE GET IT!
