Northern Lights illuminate UK night sky

- Britons stayed up all night to catch a glimpse of the Northern Lights as a massive solar storm brought a beautiful aurora to the skies above the UK.
In rare and spectacular sightings on Friday night, the aurora was spotted across the country, from Whitley Bay in the North East to as far south as Kent and Hampshire.
The Northern Lights, also known as aurora borealis, were seen in Essex, Cambridgeshire, Berkshire, Suffolk, and Liverpool.

Some News articles are saying it could happen tonight aswell so Yh
I got some amazing pictures last night at midnight from my garden. Real deep purple and green. Very happy to witness such a spectacle. A sight to behold indeed. 😍
I always wanted to see it now it’s one off my bucket list awesome
Don't know why they wouldn't tell this in the news prior to it happening. Much more interesting than the absolute tosh that they spew.
EXACTLY
Because climate change is happening and nobodys knows, the fact that this isnt the first time we are seeing this is a sign of things to come, and not great, how else we have had the most rainfall to date,Nobody has said anything, this summer will be hottest and driest to date. wait and see. And they will still say there is a hose pipe ban, the world is a joke. and nobody in power cares.!
They did?

I watched it and got photos. It’s the first time I’ve ever seen it and I’m 43. My dad is in his 70s and it’s the first time he has seen it as well. It was beautiful.

I could only see them through my iPhone camera in Isle of Man, they weren’t visible “by eye”. The bit at 46 seconds is exactly what I saw in Co Armagh, like an angel’s wings or a peace dove. Spectacular.
It was only for a very short time though maybe like one hour, in bristol it started of like a dirty brown then green then like streaks of sunlight in the night before it was over.
What a strange and fascinating world we live in. I remember a time I thought "northern lights" was sold by the gram🙂

Just realise that seeing auroas anywhere else besides the north and south poles means the sun has overwhelmed the earths magnetic field and those colours are the resault of radioactive particles reacting with the oxygen in the atmosphere to produce those colours
... May I see it?
When is next possibility of this happening
Tonight
I was completely underwhelmed and disappointed with it. For me in south wales it was a just barely visible faint purple glow in one patch of sky. We went up the mountain to get out of the light pollution areas and stayed up there for a couple of hours. It was just a nothing burger :(

St Elmo’s flame old sailers shout.

That's NOT a good sign! 😞
It's a solar flare. Nothing more. Earth has been hit by thousands of solar flares in the past decade. On every single occasion the Northern lights were visible too, but shrouded by cloud cover. The only reason why we can see the "Northern Lights" now is because there's minimal cloud cover.
It's a sign of charged particles hitting the Earths magnetic field, nothing else.
