Best instructional video i've ever came across at youtube. I looked for an irish guitar lesson and that's what it is: no jabbering but a good example of chordshapes, changes, rhythm patterns and some needful advices considering the heart and soul of irish music. Thanks a lot for posting and greetings from Germany
Hello, I have a question. I am Irish and I notice Germans seem to absolutely love Irish trad. Why is this? Why do they like it so much? Here in Australia it is less popular even though we have so many Irish people!
Thanks a lot! I played DADGAD 15 years till i got tired of it and started to play in standard tuning for half a year. It seems that this will help! Even if I actually play other folk musics than irish....
+William Sullivan You're welcome, thanks for letting us know :) Many more lessons from Cillian on the OAIM website - oaim.ie/course/37/standard_tuning_guitar_accompaniment

Well cillian will u be comin to clare for the willie clancy week this year. Might see u there if youll be around. Great lesson by the way I've been playin guitar awhile but never learned guitar trad tunes so must get on it for the willie week.
Dia dhaoibh @Online Academy if Irish Music Tá ceist agam dhaoibh. How do I determinate the key and mode of a tune at a session? Especially one I never heard or practiced before? Any tips to quickly find that in a físeán of yours? Cheers Sláinte agaibh agus Beannachataí Dé oraibh ;)
Hi, Here's what OAIM tutor MJ McMahon suggests - "Yes you could drop the E string to D and play along with that particular jig, since that jig is in the key of D that should work, but when it comes to the A chord of that progression it would be recommended to hold down the 5th fret of the 6th string (Note of A) or not hit that low string for any A chords." I hope that helps!
Preferably, you want a larger scale guitar using medium /heavy strings (13-56). Otherwise you will get alot of fret buzz from lower gauge strings. Lots of guitarists in trad scene use either Taylor, seagull, Yamaha or blueridge. If you want to spend more money on a guitar i would suggest either a Mcilroy ( one i have) or a Lowden. Unless there is a luthier closer to you that you can trust.
Grant físeán. But is there any webpage that shows the tabs or diagram of te chords here? Some have unusual shapes, not easy to figure out. Go raibh 100 000 agaibh! ;)

Thanks. I really like it. That's the reason why I asked about the name of the song: to be able to look for some sheet music for the melody. Very good lesson, by the way. It's a pity I can't put more than one thumb up here on youtube! Really. Very cool vid. Thanks for it too.
Hi John, You can get the sheet music free on the www.oaim.ie website. Sign up for the 'starter account' and go to the guitar page. We love to know how far Irish music spreads around the world, where are you watching from?

Hi Glenn, Can you try a different device?
He is good teacher. Does he play in a band?
Delighted you enjoyed the lesson .. Cillian plays with Full Set.
Thanks for the vid. I try to find how you do the F sharp at 6:06
You can get the tabs, sheet music and an mp3 on the www.oaim.ie website for free.
The F# is one finger on (2nd fret of E string ) making an F# note. I think.
Why don't you use drop D tuning as per John Doyle, or put another, what are the advantages of standard tuning?
Thump up
I love the intro to these videos! I know it's the ashplant reel but what key is it in?
It's usually in Eminor, but Thomas is playing it on a different keyed instrument.
Oh that's it so! Thanks

Could you drop the low E-String to a D and play these chords with the D string droning?
Hi, Here's what OAIM tutor MJ McMahon suggests - "Yes you could drop the E string to D and play along with that particular jig, since that jig is in the key of D that should work, but when it comes to the A chord of that progression it would be recommended to hold down the 5th fret of the 6th string (Note of A) or not hit that low string for any A chords." How do you know which strumming pattern to use
Hi. How do you play the F sharp at 5:36? Is that really the F sharp?
Hello! I'd like to know what guitar model works for dagdad tuning. Thanks a lot :)
