  • In today's video I melt down a bunch of scrap brass ball valves, some other brass fittings and some spare parts for my RC car. Luckily for me it warmed up enough to melt outside again.... but it didn't last long as snow fell the next day :(
But Luckily RC Randy made an appearance and helped me out with transporting those heavy ingots ! Stick around, there's plenty more to come ( Rain or shine)

I like it! I'm about to build a forge too, and my first melting video is going to be a straight up tongue-in-cheek ripoff of Bigstackd's style, from the dogs to the silly socks 😂

Coming from someone who doesn't melt metal I think you need to control the temp and not get the brass so hot. It is normal and inevitable to get some zinc to burn but that zinc burn off was the most intense I've seen!
    Cheers,

Hahaha it was pretty intense wasn't it 😅 but yes you are right and multiple viewers have advised me of this. Thank you for the advice, I do appreciate it ! Cheers !

I was scrolling down my feed and this video popped up. So I clicked on it, watched the video and subscribed. Great video. Brass is a beautiful metal, but sucks when you overheat it. I have been there and done that several times. Great looking stack at this point. I will need to watch a new video to see how it looks now. Great job.

Awesome video. Just did my first aluminum forge last night with my new devil forge. Question. Do I need some borax sprinkled in all forgings or just certain metals? And is all borax the same or do I need a specific kind? Thanks

Hey thanks a bunch ! Awesome keep it up. And you should use bora, I've forgotten and the purity isn't too different. It's up to you and how pure you want your metals. I don't mind, it's all beautiful treasure to me !

Dude you’ve got to put the borax in with the metal that’s not melted yet that way Dvorak boron gets all throughout the liquid metal pouring it on top of extremely high heat by opening the lid of your furnace and pouring it in that’s not gonna do anything at all to help you’ve gotta add the borax flocks in the molten metal as it’s turning to liquid and your Ingrids are going to turn out a whole bunch nicer it looks like your whole technique is to melt quick pour quick put them ingots Slow your process down a little bit add that borax two or three times as the metal is melting and it’s gonna work out a whole lot better for you but thanks for your enthusiasm and detail and melting down these metal good job very good video keep it all up thank you very much bye-bye

Just a suggestion that you can break down brass objects like this in a hydraulic press easy to make a hydraulic press for sections of angle iron a bottle jack available at most any good Store like Harbor freight for example so the trick is is your crush these objects which will break them up rather than just send them around so three or four CrunCheese undo the bottle jack on your hydraulic press add a lot of this is going to fracture some of it will break right in half so crush these hollow items prior to melting them down

I think it's your zinc burning off which is harmful but a respirator will be fine

Good Video SW ! Enjoyed it.. Others have already mentioned the overheating, but just one other thing. Dont stir the molten metal . It wont aid the the melt, you are just stirring air and any dross back into the metal..
    Regards, John

You got yourself a new sub here.
What you burned off is the zinc. Toxic fumes so wear a respirator that can handle metal fumes, you do not want metal fume fever.
I do not melt myself so I am certainly no expert but I think youneed to calculate how much zinc you need to add at the end of the melt to make up for what you burned off, the zinc serves a purpose in brass.

    • @ScallywagsPlunder
      @ScallywagsPlunder  2 года назад

Thank you for the sub and the advice, I really appreciate it! And yes I do wear a reapirator and am thinking of getting better filters in the near future! Thank you again!!

It's zinc that get's dirty, you need to be really careful with temperatures if you use zinc brass, there are many kinds of brass. Respirator is a must too.

I melted a whole bunch of copper alloy brass and bronze together once and ended up with beryllium toxicity. Don't assume all the stuff is pure brass or just copper and zinc, it could be whatever the Chinese manufacturer could purchase at a good price. Keep your heat down as you're burning off your zinc. When something like that big nut doesn't melt, take it out and have a look at it later.

The RC truck thing is cool. I would have to agree that your video is very very close to BigstackD. The style of the video is what I like to watch but maybe leave out the “cold beer and boot kicks and funny socks”. It’s just way to close to BigstackD. I’m sure you can think of something. Keep it up.
