The legendary Abe Laboriel, Sr! I have never seen anyone play bass with so much joy and enthusiasm! One of the greatest and most original bassists ever!

This is one of the most moving, profound words of wisdom from an artist I have ever listened to. What an incredible soul. Dr. Laboriel does not only play music he IS MUSIC. I am changed by this conversation - Thank you!

All those early Al Jarreau albums; Abe and Jay Graydon (guitarist) were the one-two punch of the sessions. Abe’s playing were energetic, so full of passion. Glad’s he still here. And seen his son, Abe, Jr playing with ‘Sir’ Paul McCartney a few years back. OMG! His drumming is like his father; energetic & full of passion!!😌🥁🎸👍🏾

The lesson one can learn from this session is "do it for the love of it and not for the love of fame and money". That is very profound and will always hold true.

Dr. Laboriel Sr., you sir, are a living institution. Within the confines and restraints of [time] allowed, via this interview...I found the key to your musical brilliance, shining in the crevice of your spirit. We met many years ago, in a studio, when I was a new bassist and you blessed me, by taking the time to engage and encourage...that meant a lot. While listening I was reminded that, “it is not so much important that I listen for the benefit of where your words can take me...I listened to honor where you came from. Because THAT history is what moves people.” I am so very grateful for you, godfather🙏🏽🙌🏽 #namaste #blessings #drabrahamlaborielsr #thesessions #bikkijohnsonquotes #wearestorytellers

When l found out Abe was so prominant as a studio musician, l started looking at the credits of my favorite albums and l was amazed at the number of albums he played bass on. God bless you Mr. Laboriel and thank you for you gift of music...

Yes, there are many, many extraordinary musicians (and people in every profession) who are unsung, uncelebrated, and sometimes little known. Sometimes they simply enjoy their work and are happy to make a living doing what they do so well.

The first time I saw Abe was on TV, Live with Henry Manchini Orchestra and there's a bass solo part before the theme from Symphonic Soul, and he was SLAPPING ! that's around 1980 but the show as I understand was recorded around 1977 or 78.
I'm 64 now, still in awe at his performance with Manchini, I think the tune was Peter Gunn. Saw it on Singapore's TV channel.

The difference between Abraham and most other bass players is he plays with conviction and love. Also rather than just playing songs, grooves, patterns etc. he dissects the music to find out the best way to approach what he’s playing.
