My spring broke and I never replaced one before and it took me 40 minutes, twice as long as it did you. It cost me $35 for the spring on Amazon and 40 minutes of my day for a newbie that’s not bad. I was thinking about robbing banks but I think robbing customers would keep me out of jail so maybe I’ll take up the trade.
How you going to get the customers? I guess they will just ring you since you have a set of winding bars now. Will you be insured so when you hurt yourself the homeowner doesn’t have to worry about you suing them? If something other than a spring is broken, then what? That being said, he is WAY overcharging for 2- 10k cycle springs.
I had a overhead door company here in Connecticut come out and replace 2 springs and install a new motor, oil and adjust my garage door he charged me just about 1350$ took the tech about 3 hours and gave me a 1 year warranty I found the price to be very fair. The company has 10 vans that go out on the road daily, when I booked it was just about a 2 week wait so that tells me there is a very high demand for this type of service. I have been in the woodworking business always working for someone else and I have to work 50 hours a week to clear a 1000 check. I have been considering learning the garage door trade and going into business for myself.
This guy … like he completely took advantage of this woman… pos …. He replaced the springs but the door still doesn’t shut and he basically talked her into yea leave it that way lol cause did u have it set up that way ?
Hi, very interesting video and Thank you for posting! I got a double very heavy garage door (we are in hurricane zone) which is out of balance because is almost impossible to lift it manuanlly. I follwed your video and I found that I can't rotate the springs any more, they are totaled compressed. What should be the issue here, are the springs damaged, old and need to be replaced?. The whole garage door and lifting system was changed in 2015. Thank you
I'd invest in a filer. Smooth out the torsion tube at the points where the set screws were puncturing the tube. If you have to hammer a drum off, file the tube or upsale a new tube if not an overhaul with new parts.
Most torsion springs (shown in this video) are industry rated for 10,000 cycles when they are correctly paired with a garage door. So here we have a dual spring set up which would be 10,000 cycles. This roughly translates to 10 years with normal use of a door. (Up/down twice a day) you can increase the wire size and length for more cycles but it's unnecessary and overkill. Springs do vary in cost. 1100 bucks is almost as much as a new door. I work in this industry and I just fixed two springs, cables and some other parts and the total for parts and labor was only around $280.
@@the.tricky.outdoorsman how is he getting away with charging 1150 ? im looking to get in this business but dont know if hes blowing smoke up my behind...
Not sure about that price. 22 years in the industry and I only see that kind of price from Precision. Also you should adjust everything even the opener arm so it is in the right angle. You also do not lube up everything the way it needs to be.
So $300. For springs $300. For labor and $400. For a customer in trouble call. When you run a business and pay for insurance, taxes, inventory, and a truck with maintenance, it's probably industry standard pricing.
I see a lot of shaming going on for this man's work and business. It is easy to throw shade when you are not doing business yourself. This is how any business works -- if the finished job is worth the amount paid for it by the customer, then that is how much the job is worth, with a satisfied customer. This is a great video, a bit heavy on the advertising for the training program at the end, but very instructive otherwise.
Not really cut throat. In general the first company that answer the call get the job. When the car is stuck inside the garage 500 or 700 bucks makes little difference.
$1295 for 2 torsion springs....cost $200...$900 for labour...great money!!! Buy 3 short ladders (save you a lot time from dragging it back and forth)...also get a shorter 12 point socket (you will be able to get into tight corner)...hope this help!!
I just did my own springs and got the 190,000 cycles longer ones so they'll probably last 40 to 100 years if I lube them every year. I figured the $310 total I paid for the springs and cones pair from DDM was worth it. Total job cost $330 as I got new cables and some extra vice grips. I figured the long term overall costs were best with the much longer lasting springs. Our garage goes through 4 to 8 open/close cycles per day and who wants to replace springs every 6 years with 11,000 cycle springs? Uh...the garage repair guy. :)
Most people don't want to deal with changing the torsion springs on the garage door. It can be dangerous, especially if the person doesn't know what to do. The person ends up paying the repair person whatever he quotes him/her.
How much is your life worth? Those springs are deadly dangerous! Why they can break bones, whip those tools all around and whip you in the head! Public service warning brought to you by the garage spring installers association.

You didn’t spread the springs before re-attaching the set screws?

got quoted 700 to do exactly what he did in the video in upstate NY. 2 springs and labor.
Sad part is that even lifetime torsion springs cost less then $5 a piece, the bearings are under a dollar. The markup on doors and parts are insane
you got ripped off.
@@squirts1He got more than ripped off.
@@peanut9779where can you find a “lifetime torsion Spring for for less than $5.00 a piece”?
Thanks for the video, but you should have adjusted the opener arm so the door close correctly.

When changing springs should disconnect opener first .

They only charge $350ish in Kentucky.
Yeah the dents on the shaft from some jackleg tightening them down with an impact.
How much do you charge for pair springs and how many cycles are they??
Springs prices and cycles differ depending on the type of spring that they are. So it really depends on the door you are installing them on

Can you have 2 right hand torsion springs?
Yes but you’ll need a bracket to hold each spring to the header.
You changed the spring spring made of very strong carbon spring steel, bit didn’t change the flimsy cable that holds the weight?
Damn I install mine in 1 hour never had done it before I'm in the wrong business..i will definitely look in to this
cant believe you charged this woman 1200 dollars for 50 dollars worth of parts and 40 minutes work .350 dollars in Florida

50 dollars in parts lmfao
