I don’t think we were super clear in this video but I think we’ve mentioned quite a few times before - this design is for our first build, what will eventually be our guest house. We’d love to build a bigger house in a few years when we can save up for it which will have seperate bedrooms for Neo and any other future kids so don’t worry! We don’t plan to all live together in a bus forever 😂

moving the kitchen was a good idea you should have a sitting area just outside the kitchen window such as a bar counter with chairs and you can hand food through the window and create a more interactive space while cooking and having guests

Hi guys, love these vlogs in South America! Really great to see you guys have fun! It seems like it’s more fun than work over there, I would have thought this trip would be more like 50/50 work on your future property and having fun! But it seems like on video, the work part hasn’t really took of (love to see more work on the land, would be great to watch). But maybe it has been going on, but not showing that much of it on camera 😁. Keep up the great content guys 😊

You may want to still plan the layout of this building as if this is a place you could live for years. It may be a long time until you build the main house. Kids really start loving their own space around 3-4 which will be upon you quickly! You can still make this building whimsical and creative without putting a bus in the middle of it.

Having seen all the damage to the bus from water, ants, termites, etc., I am not sure why you are so adamant on making it part of your build. It seems like it would be more cost effective to scrap it.

In general I like your design. But I would think hard about the sleeping arrangements. At the moment it sounds nice and cosy to all share the same bedroom, especially when the children are very young. But as they get older, I believe it is important but also healthier for the relationship that the two of you have your own bedroom where you can connect, share your personal emotions, be intimate etc without having to think of the kids sleeping so close. It is very normal for mum and dad to have some privacy.

I think the bus is a nice idea, but ultimately, there's a difference between a purpose built airstream - like your friends have in their house - and an old bus that wasn't designed for the Costa Rican humidity and conditions. I think it would make more sense to use the bus as a separate "guest house/studio" in a different area of your lot, but also under cover - and then have bedrooms in the current location of the bus in your designs. Your kid(s) won't be co-sleeping in your same bedroom for long, and you'll all want the privacy. Future proofing is important!

Yes think the same, cost wise keeping the bus could be more expensive in the long run maybe get expert advice. Totally understand why you want to keep it and perhaps would make sense had the bus not already deteriorated so much already but is it salvageable? Definitely as your kids get older please consider that they have their own rooms at least separate from you guys as their parents. I think it’s really important for kids to have their own space to play independently and as they get older just a space for their own emotions and independent time. i am really confused as to why you are including a bus into a home. you bought land, a dream one i might add, which means you can build a good long-lasting home on it. why don't you want a proper room ? you can have a proper bedroom which is key to long-term comfort and happiness in my opinion, and the kids need a separate bedroom, and when they're older separate bedrooms. everything else looks great. forget about the bus, sell it cause it's just a liability now. it was great to travel with and you made amazing memories on it, but now it's just getting moldy and rusty. i did see sia's house tour and was so confused for the same reason when i saw an airstream in a middle of a house. everything else looked great but that.

You should have the bus be a separate "building" on your land and then spread everything inside the house out. Then you'd have more space for kitchen, pantry, and a larger editing room for Louis. You could probably also have space for a small gym. And as others have said in the comments, definitely make a separate space for the kiddos as they get older. Either on the other side of the bus or have their own space be up in the loft. It is incredibly important for you two to have alone time and your kids will appreciate their own space as they get older too.

You guys do what is best for you, but just remember, your kids are going to be growing up. They will want their own space. Plus, by the time a kid is 3 or 4 years old, they become VERY aware of things, and you have no guarantee they will sleep through the night. I think you get what I mean. Lol. Mom and dad need a sanctuary that's just for the two of them, just like kids need a place of their own. Especially once they start getting closer to teenagers. It sounds like you're only focusing on the short time the kids will be small. Kids grow up. I wish you luck on the design. Did you guys check to see if the bus has lead in it? That poor bus needs to be put out of its misery. It served you guys well, but time to say goodbye.

I'm a recent interior design student and here is my advice to you both:
    - I can agree with other comments that you guys need to consider privacy for you and your kids. It sounds like a fun idea to have the bus be an area that's shared for sleeping but please consider 1. They will want their own space eventually + so will you both, meaning you'll have spent part of your budget incorporating the bus into your design to then later possibly have it removed. 2. The bus is also not in the greatest of conditions so again, might need to be removed in the future due to the humidity of Costa Rica. Now if the bus is truly a non-negotiable part of your desired design, I'd recommend a lot of fixing it + weather proofing + choosing the right materials for the environment.
-That being said, I'd use this space for the bedrooms (yours + kids), guest bedroom, Louis office space if you both decide not to keep the bus.
-Having the bus there is also creating a lot of dead space around it so you're losing square footage essentially that could be used for something else!
-The kitchen location is nice, however there is a lack of storage/cabinetry due to the windows (which I love but be aware this design limits cabinet space). You can totally keep this design, however the current office location should be used as a pantry/storage space for kitchen. Also having the office that close, be aware smells/heat from cooking would sneak in (beats the purpose of using the office to keep electronics safe). So my recommendation is if you like that location for kitchen, use the current office space for kitchen storage!
These are my recommendations thus far from your current design state and I hope you both find this helpful!! :)

I think you may compromise the future value of the home by having the bus in there. It's kind of a very specific taste. Why not make the bus into a cool little guest house on your land for friends and family! You could even turn it into a place to stay while your building your house. And make that guest bedroom with the awesome views into the primary!

  • @mdlg1983

I am curious why you are keeping the bus? I think you can make a lot more usable space without it. OR, if you keep it then make it a 100% dedicated parent's zone, or kid's zone and not fit an apartment inside a house...You will also not want the kids near you by the time they are in bunk beds. I share a 1-bed apartment with my toddler and it is tough to function at all after they go to bed. I would also add a second entry point by the kitchen - flip the laundry room to where the bathroom is so you can enter through that, drop your muddy boots and wet coat and then enter and so you are not dragging groceries or garbage etc across the whole house to take it in/out.

Having bedrooms inside a bus, which is inside a house, will not only block a lot of fresh air and sunlight light from coming in, but, will block your view out. Instead of tiny windows on a bus, imagine sliding doors that open up all the way. There seems to be a lot of wasted space configuring the bus into your plan.
Also, consider moving your laundry to an outside wall and include a mudroom for another entry point into the house.

Why are you keeping the bus in the plans? It seems like the bus has challenges with the humidity. Have you considered asking the price difference btw bus or no bus? Also, have you considered resale? Will depending on the bus in your build decrease resale value? I know when we build or buy a home, we are thinking we will be there for a long time, but life changes. These questions are not meant to be critical, but more curious about the reasoning behind keeping the bus.

  • @iaraluz246
    @iaraluz246 2 месяца назад +14

Even though the bus is space full of memories, sometimes letting go creates space for the new to come. After watching the state of the bus and how much damage the humidity of the jungle has and will always affect it. Just makes the point that having the bus as a part of your home design only makes sense as an emotional choice not a practical one. If I was Louis heigh I would not feel comfortable to wake up in a room every morning were I have to walk around tilting my head and not having enough space to walk around comfortably. When you are making that compromise for bus life is fine, but making that choice knowing you can actually build a home that answers to your basics needs does not make sense.

Having seen the other videos on the bus on Louis' channel i'm not sure if it will be more work than its worth. Unless a ridiculous amount of time is put into rust prevention, and then everything is lined witt metal/rubber/plastic and not wood I struggle to see how termites and ants won't take over again. Really hope i'm wrong and I know a lot of time and money has been invested in the bus, but putting it at the core of the build may not work out.

  • @marleyhop
    @marleyhop 2 месяца назад +39

You need to plan for privacy! In a very short time, it's going to get really old having the baby and any future babies crowding you out in your own sleeping area! You also need to plan for the children being mobile inside the home. They get into everything, clutter everything, and while you are planning for space saving furniture etc. Kids have a way of sucking up all that space when they spread out, play, leave toys around etc. Inevitably, the pets come next. Save yourself headaches and financial disasters down the road and consider getting rid of the bus and better utilizing that space or part of the home for real bedrooms (ideally a total of 3 to 4) and possibly a second bathroom, especially, if you plan on having more kids, let alone entertaining and hosting relatives and friends. The master bedroom can have a small bathroom, and the second bathroom can be for kids and guests. You'll thank yourself later! Besides, sentimental feelings and money invested aside, gutted and remodeled or not, that bus needs to be retired. It's an albatross, that will be problematic in so many ways in the very near future. That thing is breaking down due to humidity and environment. My BIL lives in Mexico and has had to replace numerous appliances and vehicles due to that natural oxidation that climates such as yours creates. If I were you, consider buying all multipurpose furniture to maximize guest spaces. All sofas should be able to convert into beds. Invest in murphy beds if you need multipurpose rooms. If you go with a fourth bedroom, make that an office space by day and guest bedroom by night with a murphy bed/desk combo. You can find these online. There are also plans for these if you want to save money and build yourself. You'll want bigger dining space, since you entertain all the time. Open space is great when you have a tiny family, but more kids means you're going to need more storage! It's really hard to be minimal with kids. It's a pipe dream to think otherwise. You need stuff to raise kids. Stuff means you need storage. Design a place for sporting gear like bikes, canoes, farming, gardening equipment. Plan on building more than one lenai/screened patio areas. Consider a screened wrap around patio that will surround the house. These areas could serve as both entertainment areas and guest rooms if planned right. Why screened in, when you have the rest of the property to enjoy nature? Kids. When they are small, it is safer to let the roam and play in an area like this, free of bugs, snakes, and other issues, regardless of weather. Just remember, things are getting ready to change really fast with the kiddo. If you thought he was a handful now, wait til he's mobile, and then really watch out when the other babies come. Plan for REALISTIC family life, not ideals. Family life is messy, crazy, and loud. Add friends and extended family, and you'll be wanting to move or spend a ton of money on a crazy expansion in the next two years. I hate to throw other youtubers under the bus, but check out what happend to Trent and Allie. They built a tiny house, and within the first year of their baby's birth quickly realized their initial tiny house plans were ridiculous for family life. They are now expanding their tiny home loft and are adding an entire wing to their home complete with a second bathroom and 3 bedrooms. The master has a second bathroom and is big enough to have a sitting area. In addition they have added a four car garage with mother-in-law apartment on top so they can accommodate visiting family and friends. Listen,, watch, learn and save yourselves a big headache later. Go bigger and be happy.

I think this is amazing, constructive feedback and completely relevant to their situation! Some of the design they’ve presented feels like it’s still coming from the perspective of two childless adults (from when this whole journey/dream started) and that want to highlight and appreciate the environment they’re living in. They seem to want to utilise the bus because of nostalgia and to be creative and unique. In reality, (and to be practical/cost effective), it’s best to future proof the situation now by leaving the bus out of it, creating more rooms and adapting their space to accomodate for more kids. It would also be ideal to optimise it to house more people regularly as they’re so social!
It’s fun to watch people design a place, compared to my own dream home, which would be very focussed on my introverted/creative traits 😂 so far their kitchen design looks amazing and the lounge area looks ideal for them too!

Your parents are getting older, so putting your guest room at the top of a long flight of stairs could be problematic. Also, have you considered making one wall of the house curved so it will get more light and fit more organically into the land? I agree with what everyone else has said about the bus and the need for separate sleeping quarters for you and the kids. What about moving the bus away from the house and having it as a guest room or rooms? A second outdoor living room would also be great. You can stain concrete floors and mix colors so they look like natural rock.

Two things about your future stunning home!
    1) you didn’t bring it up, specifically but with Louis’ editing man cave 😂 computers warm up a room SO QUICKLY! I know it will be your dry room so there will be some sort of venting, but an AC might be a great addition so he’s not in a dry sauna.
    2. I love the vision of your kids playing around but I’d encourage more rooms to have them once they’re older. Sleeping with or near your parents when your little is no problem but once they hit that middle school age they’ll want their own space to figure out who they are without you. So maybe that upstairs room could be two rooms? Or you can keep them in the bus as intended but have their rooms at the other side.
Just food for thought! So excited for you two. 🩷

Who I am to suggest how you live your lives but I cannot imagine sharing a room with multiple children as they grow older. A good idea in theory for infants but all y’all need your own space as time goes on. Whatever you decide I hope it works out for your family. Lots of potential. Can’t wait to see what y’all end up with🫶🏽🌈🪬✨🍄💞

I like the design that you came up with, but my first thought with the kitchen is it’s awesome with the windows on both sides, but that refrigerator sticks out and is in the way. To me it needs to be inset in the wall and at least small pantry next to it. Because you need a spot to put food in to be able to close it up and so everything looks tidy. That’s my thoughts.🤷🏻‍♀️

Do you need a sitting area in the bus? Incorporate the pullout couch in the living room for guest until the guest room is completed. It will give you and your guest privacy. Make that seating area children sleep area/bedroom.

    Exciting times guys!
Kids wise I can't see any sort of area you'd come in and dump stuff, shoes, scooters, bags, swim stuff, random things collected from outside.. Easy grab and go hats, sun protection. (if you've got any other friends there with kids and have a look at the kids stuff that might not have a place that you could make an intentional space for) could save your sanity in the future and keep the flow if you make a space for it now rather than adding extra storage that wasn't planned.
Neo having areas to hang up/store his own stuff he wants for outside trips will feel good for him too.
Louis' office could have internal windows with some blinds to make the most of the light/fresh air that comes from the kitchen windows incase he ever fancies it!

I love the second design idea! Id suggest switching the kitchen space with where the dining table area is located so that the kitchen isn't in the corner, its a bit far from the living room and other areas of the home, and they always say the kitchen is the heart of the home!

Livin on Maui we had a Papaya tree appear in our back yard last year. Neighbors had one for years so suspect the birds spread the seeds. Have Mango tree 30 ft high across the street. Be prepared for rats, birds etc stealing and damaging fruits and making a mess that attracks flies, ants etc. So be strategic in location.

I agree with comments about losing the bus! Appreciate your comments on this being a first-stage build, but feel it could create more problems for you than it’s worth and you’ll all end up in the guest room. Why not allow guests to use the bus? Otherwise, it’s just spare work/play space whilst it lasts.

Congratulations to your floor plan designer. This is of course a personal decision making but I strongly would recommend the option to consider to have a separate bedroom for a child / children. Your boy is still little but they do grow faster than one can imagine and for themselves and the parents, I would strongly emphasise to consider to have a second thought about your sleeping situation. Best of luck.

Hi Raya and Louie! My mom was watching your video and was encouraging me to help out with a couple of ideas that I have as I am currently a third year architecture student at Florida International University. While I do think your design is awesome, there are a couple of concerns that I have with sleeping arrangements and the kitchen (as you’ve mentioned will be moved around) with a touch of the modern style (in the house) while containing the brick and concrete material. But I would 110% consider the space within the rooms especially for the kids once they grow up.
I feel like collaborating with an architecture student/architect will greatly benefit as well towards your design and considerations within the project

Hello, the children’s area above sounds great. Also with access to the bus roof. I would only walk into the pantry from the kitchen and not the office. So change the rooms once. As an idea: maybe you make the toilet in a separate room with a mini sink, it’s not extra expensive but with 2+ children certainly practical. Love from Germany ❤

You don't have to incorporate the bus into the house, Just park the bus at the bottom of the property and have it as a guest house, make a beautiful house instead and keep it open fresh and breezy, have a center kitchen connect to a dining hall like a T , with the bottom of the T being the kitchen, and top being the dining hall, then have bedrooms on each side of the T
Then let the top of the T lead out to the terass, I lived with a family in Costa Rica who were fashion designers and entreprenuers, their house was like this and it was great. Make a solid house that is ZEN. Yoo let's go.

This looks great! Many kitchen building codes require that you have a solid wall behind the cooktop. Or may need a heat proof non movable tinted window. (They worry about curtains and blinds above being a fire hazard. )

  • @DanielleGlick
    @DanielleGlick 2 месяца назад +2

In terms of feng shui and traffic flow, the kitchen is a high traffic flow area, and yours only has one way in and out that looks like a narrow pinch point between the fridge and corner of the counter. When walking in, you'll be confronted with the side of a fridge looking like a big wall. The fridge could instead go in the corner against the window, which I realize would cut down on your window wall. Or you could get a counter-height fridge and separate counter-height freezer to keep them out of sight below your countertop. Then the solid wall where the fridge is now could be completely built up with wooden shelves or cabinets that aren't as deep as the fridge, so they won't pinch the flow of traffic and feel like you're walking into a big wall of an appliance.

Time to say goodbye to the bus? I get the novelty factor, incorporating an Airbus, but this? I know you've worked so hard on it and driven it there. Just wonder about spending any more time, work and money on it. Someone else suggested making rooms there instead - seems a much more practical idea. Even if you lost the £ for an upper floor, it could be adapted later. You could then have two actual bedrooms - one at either end with an entryway to each between.
Kitchen: you can't see the children from the current plan. Why not have the table where the kitchen is and the kitchen where the dining table is? That way you still have the light and you can see the children. There can still be things like a SMEG fridge in the dining area. The bench would be parallel to the kids play area and the sink - you would look out from the window.
Just some suggestions. All very exciting. Truly living the best adventure!! Thank you for sharing and being open to ideas from "the internet" ... :)

You know I love you two! Please take this as constructive feedback. I get you want viewers to help you with the architecture, but why don't you hire another architect if you aren't happy with the architect you have now? The plan you showed is not cohesive in terms of layout and structure and lifestyle. It seems you're cutting corners with no storage, not planning for future needs of the children in terms of their own space down the line. If you want to incorporate the bus, take your favorite part and repurpose it as art, not a living space. Get rid of the bus. It just looks like all ideas thrown together on one plan. I think it's best to save up some more, hire a professional you like, and do it well once.

Also everyone is different and has an opinion, so go with what feels right! The only that we encountered that was hard to understand early but thankful we did now. Being extremely intentional with the kids space. Some, not all, kids lot to have their own defined area as they grow. Not always, but hence my thoughts on making sure to be intentional not only on how many kids, but how they grow and their needs down the road!

Great plans! I am wondering if you will have enough space in the kitchen for upper shelves or cupboards. The only places would be on both sides of the fridge, but that doesn't look like a lot of space. And I think the door to the office is on one side of the fridge, which will take up space; however, no office door is indicated in the drawing. Thanks for sharing your plans 😄.

As far as the trash leaking in the car… I would try baking soda and vinegar. You can mix them and it’ll bubble up and the baking soda helps lift the dirt and yucky stuff, and the vinegar helps clean, but it’s also a natural odor neutralizer so it should help decrease the smell. It will smell like vinegar for a little while, but once that dries and the vinegar odor goes away it should take the trash smell with it. Good luck.

Tiles are very popular in the Caribbean. On my island more people have times than raw concrete, that's a more modern option in this region. There's even tiles that look and somewhat feel like wood. That could be an option if you want something different than the concrete.

Instead of the bus you have enough space for an office space at the far left, mom and dad bedroom in the middle and a kids room on the right with bunk beds, desk for when they go to school or write and do art in their own space. Mom and dad bedroom will be close to the kids so you can always be ready if they need you guys at night, yet the office will be secluded and bot interfering into the daily activities. And the current position of the office can be turned into a walk in pantry and appliances room so the kitchen with the window view won't be cluttered.

i just LOVE your layout plan. As a 49 year old mom of 2 I would think hard about the distance between the bathroom and the sleeping area. During the toilet training phase you will be up and to the bathroom a lot, especially during the night. As I age, I use the bathroom most nights. The walk from the my bed to the bathroom would be too far for me every night forever. That said I love everything else about this! Great job!

It makes sense to use the bus as a sleeping area but with the amount of land that you have, can it be a guest area rather than everyday bedrooms. Also, in line with lots of other comments, I would have separate bedrooms for you and the children. I remember being a child and I wouldn't have wanted my parents walking through my bedroom and appreciated my own private space too.

Off the cuff ideas for home: Love the idea of the landing at the top of the stairs with the bridge across to the bus, keep that. Where you have the fridge on the second render, use undercounter fridges and freezers, multiple of each. You end up with the same volume for cold storage but more counter top space and / or room for more cabinets over the counters. I also think the windows over the cooking area should open as a passthrough to the deck you need to have out there for entertaining. I would also like to strongly suggest solar panels on the roof with battery storage in the de-humidifier / utility room. Also, use the de-humidifier as water capture to have a fresh water tank on the property. I know it is not really needed in such a wet area but just a thought.
Louis mentioned a mango tree, always make sure to plant two of any fruit tree so that they can pollinate each other. A single tree frequently will not produce any fruit.
