On Storm 333:
According to Oleg Balashov, commanding officer from Alpha, the assault was led by two elite units of Alpha and Zenith(Vympel) (15-20 each). The Alpha unit targeted Amin, and the Zenith unit had the task of collecting factual evidence that Amin was collaborating with the United States. Both units were brought to Afghanistan secretly and blended with Muslim battalions to make an impression that the operation was carried out by locals, whereas in reality nearly all work was done by Alpha and Zenith.
Before the operation, Balashov surveyed the area under the guise of a bodyguard of a Soviet diplomat. His unit knew that they were going to a death zone and felt uncomfortable about it - about 80% of them were wounded shortly after they left their vehicles, yet they continued the assault. As Balashov expected, Amin's troops targeted the first and last vehicle in the convoy of six. He placed his team of five men in the front BMP and, when the BMP got immobilized by fire from Amin's troops, ordered them to abandon the BMP and run to the palace. All five were quickly wounded by massive fire from the guards, but were saved by bulletproof vests and helmets.
This account generally agrees with that by Lyakhovskiy, who gives more details and accentuates the ferocity and professionalism on both the attacking and defending sides.

Dudes that were wearing those helmets during all those anti-terrorist operations and sieges had not only a titanium visors, but also an armored balls.
literally. lol Honestly it amazes me how slow it was for armor to make its way to LE like SWAT and military like SOF. For SOF I get that their priority is planning so they won't have to ever truly risk themselves, but a little protection can go a long way in avoiding a lifetime of surgeries. Like IMO I think high cut helmets while comfortable, are really silly because you take away a huge portion of your frag protection.
They literally have armored groin pads
Serbian here.Tig helmets were given from Germany as part of war reparations. You can still find these helmets here and there...

I was not expecting this to cover as far back as Afghan! Really happy about that. The 1970/80 KGB teams were really cool, BZT-75s, ZhZT-71s and Psh-77s all dayyy!
I immediately clicked to your channel excited to find the followup videos before noticing this video came out yesterday :)

Really happy I found this channel, keep up the great work Oxide!
nice pfp.
Great video. There wasnt a lot of info about these helmets on youtube. Didnt even know anout them until I started playing Tarkov
The quality of research and video for such small channel is amazing. Contents fantastic mate
I see Oxide's going from one of my favorite entertainment channels to one of my favorite educational channels.
"TIG" helmet like tig wielding helmet?
Its just a coincidence :)
I love the military history content, keep it up.
Massive E.F. Tarkov fan, great video, looking forward to seeing other similar helmets tested, eg Maska and Vulcan, obviously.
Oxide-it's really interesting to see you making a Tig/altyn history video, as I was actually writing a short essay on the same subject-though, frustratingly, you've made my work pointless!

Very cool video mate!!!! Seeing some ballistic tests would be incredible
You make a great video dude. You're gonna be somebody we remember. For a good reason
awesome video! I never knew so much about these helmets, which is ironic because I have owned an Altyn for a few years now
For whole video I was like oh boy hope he gone say about other Altyn family helmets and their differences love to hear it’s going to be in second part
Thanks. I didn't think there was an English-language channel on Russian military topics.
Спасибо, большое. Очень интересно.
Love these informative videos. Bravo!
Oh man, can't wait to hear about Vityaz-S 😁 BTW The accentation in "Altyn" is in the "y". I'm getting an original TIG PSH-77 soon and I'm so excited 😁
Bought mine for a steal in December. It's missing the comset, and the visor mounts are broken free from the visor but I love my Altyn nonetheless. Thanks for the awesome vid, very informative!
I love my Altyn idk just something about the design I really like about it. Only issue is inside cord is cut and mic is missing a part. Some repairs I probably could get the coms working.

Great video! Hey, if you find out what grade of titanium they use, you would probably be able to purchase the same grade and have someone shape it for you. That way we don't take any beautiful Altyns out of this cruel world.
Damn bro they made the Killa helmet a real thing crazy bro!!!
Great video. Sound levels could use some work, but overall it was solid.
Love this series .
Roughly were do you film? The terrain looks amazing!
What i love about this Chanelle is that they dig upp history that ewerybody knows but doesn't know.
The fact about storming of palace in Afghanistan is one of "known" facts that few know.
A fun fact that i dont know if it's tru is than the guards had MP5s that couldn't penetrait hard or soft armor of the soviets. Ofc it depends on the ammo and so on...

Hey oxide! Where do you get your Altyn? I have a replica but I would love for a real one
Do you know of any way to get such helmets if you live in the states? I have been looking at getting one for a while, but I want an actual helmet, not just a piece of reenactment kit.
Great video as always!
I dont even wear helmets and not into them, but this was a hell of a good video on helmets..... oO
Nice voiceover, man.
I got my hands on a ZSH-1-2m helmet. Do you happen to know how to adjust it for a better fit? Seems to big for me but I was under the impression they were one size fits all.
Any idea where he filmed this video? Breathtaking landscape!
Отлично! Пили ещё документальные сюжеты про снаряжение и оружие, тебе очень подходит, и люди тебя смотрят которые этим интересуются
How did you get interested into soviet style type of gear
Altyn also means Gold in kazakh and tatar languages. Kazakhstan at that time being one of the USSR republics and tatars being one of most numerous ethnicities in the USSR.
It also means gold in turkish, written a little different though "altın"
Держи в курсе,всем пофиг
@Footbal Vine не ну серьезно,уже сколько вижу комментов про это золото,вот где? Где мне может эта информация пригодится?
@oxide nice video. Could you please tell me what the nub in the back of the helmet is for?
Lol, first ever video that i watched from Oxide, he's running through the smoke and I say: lol another airsoft larper 😆
Boy was I surprised. Good video man
I can see that helmet being good for open top vehicle gunners or the first few dudes in the room with added prection from breaching charges, but otherwise they look neat but visibility and reaction time will save you more effectively than a ballistic helmet.
Respect from Russia. Реально хорошо изложил материал по Алтыну)
cant imagine trying to get a rifle sight picture wearing one of those with the vizor down....
Yo what ammo rig are you wearing? I've been looking for one like that!
awesome video
Just wondering, what is the specific model of the "Angstrom" radio? Also, are only the 19 pin helmets "Afghan kosher?" Mine is a 7-pin, and I'm wondering if I can even use the right radio for impressions.
Cool Video
If I'm to be honest, purchasing some titanium plates of matching thickness would likely be cheaper and faster to obtain than purchasing various helmets to test on. It's likely you could get whoever your buying frm to also bend a number of plates for you to test deflection more effectively.
Also, if Steel was used instead of Titanium, what would be the type and thickness of steel needed to match the protection? Hardened? Tempered? Grey-Cast?
Each one has their own draw backs, hardened obviously is a very hard steel and will rarely dent, but it often spalls on the other side from impacts if it doesn't outright shatter.
Tempered steel dents and deforms from impacts but often returns to it's original shape in blades, in armor it may dent but will rarely spall.
Cast would have the issue of impurities in the cast leading to structural weakness if done improperly. Air cavities could cause metal fatigue to become present much sooner than it should.
Great info
1:27 arent those the guys in counter strike?
What the heck happened at 2:03 ? Did a mortar shell just exploded there right before the cut ?
Perhaps a maska 1sch would make a nice next helmet in the collection.
Snuck one of these onto my cutter last year when I was in the coast guard..loved being on a MG wearing it while my friends did boarding, most people just kinda laughed some kinda looked scared asf😂. Captain didn’t like it either lol
@Oxide, genuine question m8; Just bought a gearcraft k6-3 replica and theres virtually no padding inside, making it much too spacious when wearing it. Any suggestions on pad inserts to buy or am I jerry-rigging some foam in there?
Mich pads
I just bought a k6-3 in damn near mint condition. Really excited as I’ve wanted one for a long time. Broke the bank but it was worth it
Very nice video
Oxide has uploaded ❤️ never clicked a video so fucking fast. Today is a good day
I want to know if I could put a maska visor on the altyn. I've done so much research and yet I am no where. I just want a altyn with a maska visor.
was wondering what uniform/camo youre using in the vid?
off topic question but whats the font you used at the end of your vid?
Please armor test the altyn, i've been waiting for a proper test on that helmet..
Awesome!
I'd like to own a Altyn helmet, where is a good place to get one of these?
Cool vid
I've a replica TIG PSH-77 but unfortunately the radio button on the left is broken and cant seem to find a replacement one as well as I'm looking for a 7pin cabble to 3.5mm Aux.
Also the cutouts on the visor dont help with aiming. Unless using an under folder or Romanian sidefolding stock.
Excellent
When you say all handgun rounds does this include more esoteric rounds such as 5.7 x 28 SS190 and 4.6, as well as 9x21 Gyruza and the new Grau Index 7N31 9x19 handgun rounds?
Most Russian helmets like this are rated for Gost 2 with some margin.
Splinter Cell Double Agent music... I LOVE IT
whats the rig/vest thing you have on?
I want to hear everything about everything you know about russian gear ASAP
Correct. Many 5.45x39 rounds will defflect of the ALTYN unless you're using 7n39. But some 7.62x39 rounds can be stopped
