      Pride is the valiant and successful defender of ignorance.
      Media creates society, so society becomes an abuser, made up of squeaky wheels and some clear minds.
      Individual thought can free one from society's insane habits, but not from its abuse.
      Guilt and confusion from societal control makes freedom all the moral beautiful and pleasurable.
      Society hates individuals but is jealous, and the chance of freeing another being from mind control is delightful.

    I believe we're all overwhelmed by the magnitude of the scope of humanity, with such varied divisions created out of the varied beliefs humanity testifies to, there is no room for healthy debate to find any real solutions to a problematic world, therefore we're always in contention with each other!

    Before I ever heard of "Notes from the Underground," a Dostoevsky novel I have read, I spent some time during my life teaching my son to see past the end of his own nose. That is, that others besides himself have feelings and he needed to see the importance of those feelings to himself, and make them a real part of his thinking and his life.

    Yes and no. The value of humility in accepting ones place in the world is interesting (and pride has a stench that even the most ignorant can smell). However, having the capacity for self-reliance and independence should not be left out. Only then is the significance - the virtue - of submitting one's capacity to the aide of others an option that one may volunteer if one wishes.

      In other words, common sense is the most basic and necessary virtue. But it can't be defined for those who don't have it. And perhaps honesty combined with experience gives common sense. So honesty could then be seen as the most valuable, but without much experience it is short sighted.

    The problems are either people living a caricature of an individual or trying to create a caricature of a collective. There is natural individualism and natural cooperation and they are two halves of the same thing. Communism and overt selfish individualism are two opposites and both are destructive, with the former being an artificial construct of cooperation. The Industrial Revolution was driven by free thinking individuals at a time when all went to Church. The types of religion was not orthodox but variations on Protestantism. The individual was free to think while there were social responsibilities.

    Dostoevsky is perhaps the greatest novelist ever; he should be required reading in all schools, not necessarily Crime and Punishment, but The Idiot, Brothers Karamazov and The Possessed. Almost any translation will do and people have their favorites. He plummets into the depth of human despair and rises into human exaltation & Salvation.
    He is spiritual and recognized the evil of the still extant world movement of dialectical materialism that will murder ( such as the Tsar, his family, and countless millions) and lie brazenly to achieve its goals of chaos and mind control. This all in the late 19th century, but he saw what was coming.
    Reading him is like reading a prophet who is connected to God. He loved his New Testament
    This is my opinion and I recognize it is subjective. There are also good audio versions of his major works. One must have patience but is well-rewarded.

    The likes of Dostoevsky were always intent on working out why they were miserable and then what would save them from their misery.
    The average man in the street does not see his happiness as a riddle to be solved, but just gets on with it day to day, for the most part content with what he has (a bit of extra money would always help!).

    The power of the human mind results in a terror of what it knows beginning early in childhood.. Humanity weaves a fantasy to cope with this existential terror and the anxiety that travels with it. There are variations on this fantasy but it always has the same theme. It is acted on by culture but all cultures must respond to the same existential threat. Religion, politics, addiction, all carry the fantasy woven into the story. Humanity is still in its infancy regarding the terror of what the next moment may bring. The terror lives within the minds ability to perceive time and with it the future. The terror always lives in the future.

      Thank you for your kind words! Dostoevsky and Adler share intriguing similarities, particularly in their exploration of human psychology and individual struggle. Thanks for this unique perspective! You're right-St. Paul often emphasized sensitivity to others, even in everyday actions like sharing a meal. It's about respecting the feelings and beliefs of those around us, which Dostoevsky explored deeply in his work, especially regarding moral dilemmas and empathy.
      In the context of Dostoevsky, this is an exciting thought: being mindful not just of our own beliefs but also of how our actions might impact others. It's a reminder to pause and think before we act. Thank you for bringing this insight to the conversation!

    Dostoevsky has gotten it almost right. It is not humility but abnegation that is required.
    The distinction is a principle one in Russia, the history of which is a series of cycles of utter violence and holop submission. These cycles exist precisely because humility -- however well it sounds --- is neither healthy nor tenable. Abnegation is both necessary and sufficient insteaad .

    He didn’t discover this in a “…time when faith and reason collided.” He discovered this in a time when faith and reason collided with the state!
    The real lie is that others possess the same feelings to the same degree. Empathy, unlike meaning, doesn’t require rationality. Empathy requires sentience not salience. Consciousness that others feel pain as you do. Salience/rationalism through “demonization” can negate sentience, if one possessed it in the first place. A rational mind without sentience seems impossible, doesn’t it? The lie is that it is impossible.
    Rationalism, of itself, is not proof against evil. Indeed, it has proven to be a very efficient servant of evil.

    Why do people rely so much on the male principle? My philosophy book was chock full of male philosophers, thinkers, wayshowers, and what not. I don’t recall a female being listed. However, when considering the male/female principle, there’s a deep recognition that the thinking being is neither male or female, in the larger sense, not the limited human self. Of course, there are differences between the genders, but with the male principle so drastically leaning on the one sided male principle, it confuses many a thing in this world of 10,000 things. What about the 10,000 non-things?

    • @NexusInsight-13
      @NexusInsight-13  Месяц назад

      Thank you for raising such an important point! Philosophy has historically favored male thinkers, often at the expense of recognizing the contributions of women and the balance between masculine and feminine principles. It's true that, in a larger sense, the 'thinking being' transcends gender, yet societal structures have long emphasized one-sided perspectives. Your insight into these societal structures perpetuating the imbalance enlightens and greatly enriches our understanding. I truly appreciate it!

    • @NexusInsight-13
      @NexusInsight-13  2 месяца назад

      That's a great question! While lies may offer temporary comfort, Dostoevsky believed they can ultimately distort our sense of self and reality. He emphasized that living in truth is essential for achieving genuine inner peace and fulfillment, even though it can sometimes be challenging. Lies, no matter how small, can create layers of illusion that eventually weigh us down. This debate between comfort and truth is fascinating and intellectually stimulating. To what extent should we prioritize comfort over truth?

    Loneliness...sorrow...grief...anguish...these all feel very real. We all must live in the shadow of death. Antidote? 1st Cor 15: 56-58. What do you think of it. And is pride the same as vanity? Let me know what you think please, my dear friend, wherever you are.

    • @NexusInsight-13
      @NexusInsight-13  2 месяца назад

      Thank you for sharing such a thoughtful perspective. Indeed, Dostoevsky often wrote about loneliness, sorrow, and the ever-present shadow of death; he delved deep into the human condition and the pain we all face. As for 1 Corinthians 15:56-58, which speaks of death’s sting being conquered through faith, it’s a powerful antidote in its own right-a reminder of hope beyond suffering.
      Regarding pride and vanity: while they’re closely related, pride often has a positive connotation when it reflects self-respect and dignity. Vanity, however, leans more toward excessive self-admiration, often shallow and self-centered. In Dostoevsky's view, pride might be seen as a virtue if it’s tied to moral strength, whereas vanity would be seen as empty and disconnected from true purpose.
      Thank you again for this reflection-it's a reminder that these themes remain timeless.

    First, the assumption that if god is unreal, morality/ethics doesn't exist, presupposes religion has a monopoly on ethics. That is false, e.g., see "The Virtue of Selfishness" by Ayn Rand. Pride is earned by careful, fearless examination of our ideas, questioning our hidden premises, which we have to work to expose. The work is a product of dedication to truth, honesty. Our thoughts are personal, but they are influenced by our associations, our interactions and consequences. If we lived a hermit's life, NEVER interacting, we wouldn't need ethics. We alone are responsible for our conclusions, our values, our morals. But, we need interactions to form them.
    Do we live in "a world that prizes individualism and self-reliance"? At 82, living under the U.S. Empire's totalitarianism/collectivism all my life I see the opposite. The public seek to be governed by force, i.e., deadly threats, fraud, propaganda. It is self-enslavement. I have witnessed it all my life, suffered criticism for questioning it. I got no answers because it is indefensible. This socialism comes from "The Most Dangerous Superstition" (Larken Rose). It is NOT questioned, only adhered to irrationally. Why? IF it be valid, why is it not proudly, openly discussed? Why does that evoke fear and revulsion? Why are all who dare to ask questions about it attacked personally?
