Rotten Vale is pretty much fully underground, you can see the sky peaking in from the upper levels but you're still under the Coral Highlands. But I do think it's unique ecosystem kinda removes it from the typical idea of underground
There's so much that could be done with this concept. Maybe at the entrance of the caverns we're introduced to something familiar like Nerscylla or Gigginox, but as we descend we're introduced to completely new monsters like a transluscent carapaceon, an undergound bird wyvern that uses a sticky liquid to build nests on the cave ceilings and an olm-like amphibian that can squeeze through narrow spaces. There could also be a vampiric Nargacuga-like fanged beast that uses echolocation and is adept at all-terrain movement, even in water. The region's apex could be a semiaquatic snake wyvern with features taken from centipedes and the grootslang, an African monster. As for seasons, the equivalent to the inclemency period could involve the caverns flooding, giving the apex, the carapaceon and the amphibian a huge environmental advantage while the bird wyvern's activity becomes more restricted. I think it would be funny if they added a Pegomastax-like elder dragon related to Nergigante. (Pegomastax was a goofy-looking dino covered in quills). To adapt to the flooding tunnels, this dragon has some features suited for semiaquatic life. Imagine if this dragon's favourite prey was qurio and that it used its spikes to protect itself from them. It would be even cooler if it had a turf war with Gaismagorm, who resides at the deepest parts of this cave system. Maybe this new elder's ecological role is to keep Gaismagorm in check. Not neglecting small monsters, we could have a crevice-dwelling raptor bird wyvern closely resembling Masiakasaurus, which is a real dino that specialized in hunting burrowing animals and an Oryctodromeus-like monster with Kestodon's body plan. We could also have a konchu-like isopod monster that is preyed on by the bird wyvern (they could even put it in the same superfamily as Yian Kut ku).
Would love a full on underground map! It’ll be perfect for scary monsters like Khezu, Gigginox, Nerscylla, etc! Love the deep rock galactic ost nice touch
this sounds rly cool! so far it reminds me of media like journy to the center of the earth, in the self contained ecosystem sense i think it would be very facinating with the season system theyre building in wilds, your descriptions r rly good
Isn't there a fully underground zone in 4U? The only thing not underground is a big ass hole in the ground that makes as an entrance and even so, it's technically under the ground level just doesn't have a ceiling
I was discussing a biome concept that doesn't have any sunlight or above ground areas, including the camp area. I know the Sunken/Volcanic Hollow exists, but I wanted to push the underground concept even more.
I agree that having a fully underground area could work, but most of your monster suggestions are pretty terrible imo. Worst is definitely trying to put a huge owl into a closed cave system of course. Imo if this ever happens it has to bring mostly new monsters, with exceptions for Khezu, Gigginox and maybe that leech thing from Frontiers or wherever it was from Spider monsters would deffo fit well tho. If the area is big enough and you space it out properly you could have both Khezu and Nerscylla in this area

Believe there's two, actually: the Sunken Hollow and the Volcanic Hollow
I would love to have a giant cave salamander/olm monster.
What about the Sunken Hollow in MH4? It's all underground except for base camp
