This is the one I own. Man I've never heard anything like it. The gain its capable of can get absolutely crazy. I like it so much that I'm thinking about buying another for a back up.
A knowledgeable guy told me that it's worth experimenting with different kinds of valves too, particularly the 12Au7. Fair enough, but I've never tried it myself, so it's at your own risk!
@@gearfacts 100%…..It has served me very well and without doubt my guitar module of choice…even with the Uaudio sims in console I still prefer to use tonelab in my guitar chain. Real cool to see yer feature.
Hi, I know it's long in the tooth but does anyone know where I can download the Editor Librarian software for this Tonelab. I've just dug it out again to play around with but can't locate the software. Thanks in advance. :)
True, this machine is pretty old now. If it’s not available on the Vox or perhaps cool website, I’d look for a relevant group on Facebook. Sure, this machine would have a bit of a following and these groups are always full of helpful people :-)
I'm told that no other adjustments are needed. I met one guy who swore by the 12AU7, he said it really boosted the sound. I've always just settled for the 12AX7, I'm happy enough with it :)
These can be had cheap on the used market. I love mine and use it all the time. I do use the S/PDIF Out to my audio interface S/PDIF In for very clean recording. I also installed a better tube and it did make a very very slight improvement to my ear. Frankly, I'm not a tone snob and feel many of the older units are a bargain and produce tones that sit well in a mix. I think Roland's COSM tones are good too and many look down on them.
@@gearfacts Yes. I did a lot of searching and reading on the Internet and settled on the Mullard 12AX7 / ECC83 tube. The difference is not huge but it better, cleaner to my ear. What I like about the Vox ToneLab desktop is what you said. Very easy to get a good tone quickly. I have the foot pedal / controller too. I leave the S/PDIF plugged into my interface and installed a small keyboard drawer on my desk. So I can slide it out, turn it on, dial in a tone, activate S/PDIF on my interface and launch my DAW and record.
It gets great clean tones, I use it for my audio interface too -- why deal with lame software modelers when you can have a cheap solution like this guy. Guitar - pedalboard - Tonelab - Focusrite. I swapped out the tube for a Tube Amp Doctor 12ax7 because of the spares I had lying around it sounded warmest. Don't believe the hype: changing out the tube can definitely make a difference -- especially if the unit sounds "fizzy" to you.
Still an amazing device to add to your kit. I love mine... Just kind of a pain in the ass to set up on the fly if your techno compromised, like me ;))))))))
I've just bought one for 25€. It has no power supply cable, so I don't know if it actually works, but I'm really struggling to find the power cord for purchasing. It seems like it's 9v 3A, but I'm not sure. May you know where can I find it?
You may have to go to an electronics store. I think the connector is unusual as well. I could be wrong, but I think it's the same adapter that goes into Korg's Triton keyboards - very high amps, 4-pin round connector. Weird. You got a good price though, so it's worth hunting for that adapter. Get advice from the electronics store :)
@@gearfacts Thank you so much for your reply! I've been looking on electronic stores without success, but as you say, the price I paid makes the effort worth it. I'll take a look at the adapter you've mentioned! 😁
Shane Miller Well yeah it's the most subjective word in the English language. When it's said by someone who's reviewed literally hundreds of guitar effects units though, it becomes more 'objective'. Thanks for watching Gearfacts!
Gearfacts I don't doubt your skills analyzing gear. I actually considered buying a tone lab. It was the 12ax7 that had me interested. It took awhile for me to deduce that most gear is the same shit in a different package. That being said, is it studio good or just something to pass the time tinkering with? From what I hear it sounds like loads of fun to tinker with. I aquired a digitech gfx1 twin tube preamp that has the best tone I have personally had. Of course I am no professional like yourself. Anyway....keep the vids coming and I will keep watching.
Ah yes I see where you are coming from. I think for your particular needs this unit wouldn't quite cut it. This is ideal for high-end home recording and is priced accordingly. It sounds like your heading more towards pro studio. You might need to navigate the vast sea of dedicated pedal effects......Thanks for watching my channel :)
Mine sounds super muddy. I have tried two different valves. I am following all the manual instructions. So I am not sure what happens. By the way, a fabulous written manual.
Do you know if there's a list that describes all the presets? Which artists they are supposed to sound like? I know some of the name give you hints, but not all of them.
Each preset can have a different batch of effects, so switch patch, switch effects... otherwise the knob that above the amp and cabinet knobs switches effect types.
Bought one in today in mint condition.
This is a unit everybody talks about years from now and a highly wanted one. Very decent built and quality.

I own this puppy since years and i still love it. Im searching a pedal board for it even
Sounds even better in manual mode .
I have a ToneLab EX and love it.I just ordered this too to pair with an old Zoom Recorder.Thanks.I'll experiment with a subtle compressor going in.
I've heard nothing but good things about this unit from people like you who seem to really know what they're doing :)
bought in 2008 and it's permanently wired in to the studio 14 years later.
Those who really know it really love it :)

Thanks for the demo. I've often looked at the ToneLab stuff and wondered if it is any good.
DiMo28 no worries, thanks for watching Gearfacts :)

Awesome i have 1 and 3 tonelab le rock on
This little unit takes dirt effects well. I have about a dozen different fuzz/distortion pedals that I use.
Yeah it has some serious followers, this one. I need to get one again.

Do switching tubes, such as 5751 for the 12ax7 require any other adjustments and if so how?

Yea, clean, a little delay/reverb is where it is at its best. I find slightly crunchy tones good too.

Hmm, hope you can fix it, they're great when functioning right.
@@gearfacts My fault :). I had the amp switch instead of the line switch.

All I can suggest is seeing if they're listed in the manual (google Vox tonelab desktop PDF" :) Gearfacts
They are listed in the manual, but just what the values are for each preset. Thanks though!
Your effect valve is not working?
Is this preamp takes overdrive very well??
yes! :)
Kan this one loop what you are playing?
No looper on this one :( Gearfacts
hi Man there’s a lot of difference for ToneLab SE hug
Someone told me if you try an AU7 valve instead of an AX7 valve it makes a huge difference
Thank you so only q valve that makes a difference, can this exchange be made or does it have to lead to assistance or whoever understands?
@@danieljbdj I think it's easy for anyone to do. btw This is just something I was told - I have never tried it myself!
Thanks for the tip bro I have a ToneLab SE I will research more if I can do this procedure
Hi! Does anyone knows if this works well with synths or drum machines?
It does :)
@@gearfacts Thank you!
How is he changing the effects???
I would assume he just kept the camera in one spot and edited out the parts where he went down to change settings.
