I am a quilter and I love making scrappy quilts. But for the longest I’ve been wanting to make my own clothes and to dress modestly. I have a lot of quilting fabric so I want to turn my fabric into skirts for me to wear. Once I have so many I will donate my clothes to a clothes closet that don’t charge people for the clothes. I want to thank you for sharing these videos on how to make these skirts. I’m on a limited/ fixed income. I never have money to buy food for the whole month. So I can’t buy one of your skirts. But I have tons of scrap fabric already. I am going to keep watching your sewing videos so that I can learn to make my own clothes.
Over ten years ago I purchased 3 pair of scrub pants and they are worn out. My income is less than $750 a month now and I cannot afford to buy new clothes. My mother in law was a quilter and left a huge stash of cotton material when she passed. Thank you for sharing this gift of knowledge. Because I used to make all my own clothes and already know how to sew, I can now make skirts for myself. Your generosity has touched my heart. Bright Blessings.
Cheyenne, hi! Don'know if you will see this. Am new on RUclips. Are you needing scrubs? Let me know. I have some you can have if they are the right size. Am going to do some upcycling (capri & some type of top) with a couple but that still leaves some. Let me know.
Maybe you can make some to sell and increase your income,if you have quilters fabric.
@elizabethguzman6024 when I say that my mother in law was a quilter, I mean that she knew how to sew the fabric together and machine quilt it. She did not invest in high quality fabric and most of it is synthetic, not cotton. It's not really esthetically pleasing, but combined with some solid colors that I had on hand, it makes acceptable clothing for me. I enjoy knitting and crocheting more than sewing and am slowly accumulating product for fall craft shows. Thank you for taking the time to offer this suggestion. Bright Blessings.
I understand about not having enough money. I’m the same way.
@@cheyennestorey7591 i have often found that if you get onto the local "freecycle" or "buy nothing" groups, and say you are looking for old clothes to cut into patchwork, or fabric to make patchwork things... (especially if you say you want to make a patchwork skirt to wear) you will get a lot of free fabric, AND you may get people saying "if i have the fabric, can you make me one?"
I saw a Doug and Stacy video, a while ago. I immediately said to my husband, "She's wearing a Heidi skirt!" LOL. I recognized the patchwork pattern, but the tie cord was the true give away. I love your skirts so much. I'm almost finished with one that I'm making through trial and a lot of error. Been out of the sewing game for too many years. I still have to give my "new to me" treadle machine some TLC. Can hardly wait to use her. I think I'll name her Heidi in honor of you. You truly are inspiring. I just love your videos, Heidi. Please, don't ever change and keep on keeping on. ♥️ 🪡
I lived in a house that had a pool table with a ping pong top. I used that table with the top as a sewing/lay-out table. Worked very well.
Our ping pong table does get used a lot for various products we are working on when not being used for the actual game but is still not near big enough for laying out the skirts
I wanted to say thank you for this video... I had watched your channel many years ago & so admired it's content...
Now, while once again doing chemo.. I so needed something to hold my mind.. Distract from treatment/pain... & uplift my soul (I also wear long skirts every day... I've had to move from my place in the Forrest (still keeping it) to be closer to the trail treatments..
As I was going through 12 year old storage boxes stacked to the ceiling in my new place.. I found a bag of scraps. Some 12x14 some smaller... But alot in these beautiful quilting fabrics all blending to match... Denim?! Where they came from I've no idea... I've quilted but these are old fabrics.. Some look japanese..
Again.. Idk... I just sat and sorted & ironed... Happy in the idea that "something" will come to me... I opened YT on my TV... And your video was there... So I will be making a skirt I will love (with pockets) in colour's that fit me & be able to do some thing that has me smiling for hours
Ty again... From a stranger who feels blessed to have found your videos.... Again
I have been making patchwork skirts and four tier strip skirts for decades. The one that Stacy was wearing when she went out to the garden really caught my eye because of the colors and it was just made just a little differently. I did take a screenshot of it but never imagined I would run across your channel showing that you make them. Great job and I have gotten a couple of good ideas from you. Thanks!
🙏🕊🙏
I think Stacy has 7 of my skirts total. Two 3-tier (for summer) and the rest are 4-tier
@@RainCountryHomestead The one I saw was the blue and the Browns and it was three tier
@@spiritwindvue8038 Yep, that was one of them and the other is very similar but in browns and black. She also has a four tier denim skirt and a couple of monochrome four tiers, one in black and dark grays and the other in greens
@@RainCountryHomestead They are all beautiful. I have seen probably most of those that you mentioned but that blue and brown is absolutely gorgeous. And YES! Skirts are so handy and nice to wear for so many reasons, ladies just need to use their imagination, plus, go back really and truly to a more beautiful Godly way of dressing to boot❗️
You are true and pure freedom, creativity and still modesty! You are really inspirinf! I love wearing skirts and dresses, too, unlike the women in the world around me. Thank you soooooo much❤️. Biiiiig hugs from Croatia 🥰
I love Stacy’s skirt! Had no idea until today you made it. You do such beautiful work. Been wanting to make one for myself since seeing Stacy’s. Can’t wait to binge your playlist and finally make one. I’m 5’2” so hearing you are about the same height and still wear the 4 tier is helpful. I absolutely love your color selections for each of them. Thank you for sharing and God bless you Heidi 🙏🏻
I believe Stacy has 7 or 8 of my skirts :)
@@RainCountryHomestead Where can I view and purchase one of your beautiful skirts and who's Stacey?

I love Stacy skirts too. I just saw yours in the video. So beautiful. I will email you to place my Oder I love love that you put pockets in them, so handy. I just came and found your videos I liked and subscribed. Thank you 😊
It's like making a quilt.
Or building a rock wall that's staggered.
I love your color choices & combinations.
I have not sewed in awhile.
I need to get with it.
Thanks for the encouragement.
Fabulous thanks for your beautiful advice it is so lovely
They are sooooo beautiful. Now I am inspired. Getting out my sewing machine!!
Excellent work
You are very talented woman and lovely to listen to. I love what you make, thank you for your time in showing it to us.
I love the look of the half denim rag style skirts, and the patches are such a nice touch!
God bless you.
This video was made 2 weeks ago and I discovered your skirts today.
Hooray ! To find this video.
I am absorbing, like a dry sponge, all your tips and tricks.

I love that patchwork skirt.
I showed several so I do not know which one you mean but thanks
Thank you for sending me to these videos 😊
As soon as the sun comes up, I'm digging in the fabric stash. Can't wait to make one.
Nice 👍🏻 for the better explanation and presentation during a video recording you can use white plastic class board with magnets, fix fabric with small magnets on the board and it’ll be easier to show on camera and you don’t have to hold all pieces in your hands 🙌 🎉 thanks for sharing with us 🎉
One entire year I wore dresses and I'm really wanting to make one of these!
Thanks for this video Heidi. I love the look of these skirts. I’m just getting ready to make one of these for my granddaughter.
Gosh, you’re a wonderful teacher and communicator. Thank you for sharing.🙏🏻 I appreciate that you can explain this in such detail without making the viewer confused. 😊
I love the blue colors in this skirt...its my favorite..
Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience. Beautiful
I watched this while I milking this morning😁. My sweet jersey girl was taking in all the great tips right along with me😂. Great video Heidi. Thanks so much for sharing and God bless y’all❤️
I Love these styles of skirts and have several of them. Mine are mostly light weight for Spring and Summer wear but I like the idea of a heavier one that I could wear when it's cooler.
What a beautiful Gift God has given to you ❤️ I have made a couple using blue jean shorts 🩳 top, quilt squares skirt on bottom, and a pair of overalls that turned out great. But I made just the patch skirt and my husband said it looks like a barrel on me, maybe 🤔 I should put darts in in. I wear size 16. So it's A trial. BUT I LOVE your ideas. God bless you and Thank you 🙏💕
Thank you Heidi … Have always wanted to make one of your skirts, I have a modern Janome sewing machine, but just got the Treadle Janome & sewing cabinet, Will be my first time to use treadle. Love to sew, have a huge sewing list for future gifts too …
Thank you for your creativity & how too videos, truly appreciate you …

I watched your old video and started making these skirts. I thought I might make some extra money, too. So far, I made one for 2 yr old granddaughter, 6 yr old granddaughter, 11 yr old BFF 's granddaughter and an elderly, friend. 6 yes old g.d. I just used 7" strips of 3 different fabrics with a 4" light denim strip at bottom. I'm also using poly-cotton twine to crochet the drawstring. It's super cute! ..and cheap: $1 at dollar store! Yes, I do now have non-family members inquiring and will soon be making sales. 😁 Thank you so very much, M'am, for these videos! I pray all Yehovah's BEST blessings for you and yours! 🤗
That is gorgeous. I have to show my daughter . God bless you and God bless everyone.
Awe I see my skirt! Heidi I just love the colors of my skirt and will cherish this skirt as well.❤
Good morning Heidi.
Thank you Heidi!🙂
Love and blessings!💜
I work at a thrift store and found a pair of baggy chambray drawstring pants that already had a flat pocket. I am going to use the legs of the pants for some of the squares, and I cut the legs off 1 1/2" below the flat pocket. It is so easy to just now sew the tiers onto the top 12". I have more chambray shirts plus some men's plaid shirts to finish the tiers. I love the sweatpants waistband idea as well, and think putting some shirt fabric patches on the first tier would tie it all together. You have me in creative mode. Thank you for sharing your methods and ideas! God Bless!
Thanks Heidi 😊
Thank you for sharing your pattern, Heidi.
i like the pink patch skirt.
Thank you so much for sharing I love that skirt that is so beautiful 🥰💗God bless you and Iove all your skirt 💜
Brilliant, just brilliant. I love it !!!! Thank you and God Bless
I made my first skirt a couple weeks ago. I absolutely love it. Thank you for sharing. I plan on making many more.
Thankyou for sharing your fabulous advice. I was wanting to try a patchwork skirt and searched in RUclips and come across this video. Your advice is invaluable and very thorough. I'll be looking at more from you now. Thankyou.
Thanks for the info!
For 20 years I only wore skirts in the summer, even doing all the farm chores as well (except shoveling pens). It was not until I started working with kids more that pants just became easier.
Very well instructed. Love the skirt you make and I enjoy making them. And watching you put them together never gets old
Your skirts are SO beautiful! Thank you for the helpful tips!
going back to some older videos so commenting late...
from making "rag quilts" and also doing chenile cuts and exposed seams in various textiles... while you can do the "rag style" in ANY fabric you like? it will give you a fuller fringed look in things that are heavier- look for denim, flannel, or 'bottomweight' fabrics (also some canvas fabrics) you can test how they will look by cutting a small test patch, and throwing it in the wash....
oh, also, if you need a VERY hard wearing skirt? you can do a simple french seam by sewing it *as if* you were doing rag style, but with a narrow seam, and then folding the seam the other way, and sewing it right side together with just a bit wider seam.
another option for a hard wearing skirt (or if you have time and like the looks) is to sew ribbon over the seams.
Thanks so much for this update ... I have a small space so I'm thinking what I will do is plan my fabric placement on paper - using crayons to represent the different fabrics used. Kind of a "paint-by-number" idea. I'll make up a paper grid of color ... I've done this before with quilts. Love your channel!
I love your color combinations and your skirts are lovely. I had seen some patchwork skirts in the distant past that I was not a great fan of, but I really like yours. I will have to check out your playlist. Thank you for the ideas!
You are an amazing seamstress! I love your skirts! I saw Stacey in that skirt you made her. Thought it was so pretty!
I love your skirts!!!
I really like the rag quilt pattern it's my favorite, you're such an intelligent lady Heidi.
God bless my friend ❤️
Hi. Thank you for the information. Adorable skirts.
These skirts are so fun and beautiful! Thank you for your generosity in sharing your tips
Beautiful work!!! Thank you for the video, very informative.
This video is soooo helpful!! I can’t wait to make my own. Feeling lucky to learn from a pro like you, thanks for sharing your knowledge
I set the fabric squares out on the length of my queen size bed. I lay the fabric on top of eachother with a bit peeking out at the side, like playing cards. If that makes sense. Works pretty well! I don’t mind the overlap in colors over the tiers, but I love your idea of breaking that up with patches.
and I love wearing skirts too..😊
Thank you so much! Starting my skirt soon, so I truly appreciate the tips! 😊❤
I love this channel. I have learned so much. Thank you for sharing!!!!!!
Love these
Hi Heidi 👋 Your skirts are beautiful!
I love your skirts. Thank you for the update tutorial. I have an old bamboo top sheet that the fitted sheet wore out. I plan on using the top sheet to make a single colored skirt. I’ve been waiting until gardening season is done here before I get back to sewing and quilting. Take care.
Hi Heidi. Everything made sense. I do sew, so I was able to follow along with your instructions. I mostly do quilts though. Your skirts are very cute.
My sister gave me a 1920-ish Singer 66 Lotus so I am enjoying treadling. No zig-zag but a great straight stitch. Thanks for another great video.
I LOVE the skirt that I purchased from you and get compliments on it all the time! The tips you shared are great and it makes me want to try sewing again. I Haven't tried in many years so its a little daunting since every machine I touch seems to break in some fashion. Thank you so much for these tips! Blessings 🥰
excellent instructions. yes it makes sense.
I’m so happy I found your video I’ve been want make one of these
Omg these are beautiful I would love one, especially the one you're holding there as an example and the paisley material 😍
I love your skirts so much! I have some patchwork skirts but am making more. I wear skirts fulltime late spring to late fall. I am working on some warm slips so I can wear them fulltime year round.
I have made several of these skirts for myself. I love them! I have a hard time with making the solid color on top and the bottom 4th tier different colors. The third tier is hard to gather and sew evenly 🫤 Although I still love them, and no one notices 🤣 Thank you for sharing your knowledge 🥰 God bless!
Great video! I also have learned to do everything in my jumpers and skirts, I have made raglan edged jumpers, but not a tiered skirt yet, ha, challenge accepted! Also, glad to hear how you added your pockets, I have done them several different ways...God bless you.
Love your choices of colors/schemes. Such beautiful work in all you do!
I'm a quilter but love this skirt. would look so cute with a jean jacket and boots
Wow I love the skirt. I have been looking that kind of skirt cause I saw Stacy wearing it and I really like it and I was wondering were she bought it. Now I know it comes from your store. I will email so I get any notification what you sell. I will wait if the skirt will comes up🥰
I love your skirts! I’m waiting for the email so I can buy one❤
Thank u.you are so special to share this with us.but I hate gathered skirts bec with my maternal shape, it's not pretty.someday I will be trimmer.
Now that my head is spinning.....very well explained though!!!!
Amen, God is the best!
✨👌🏾Thanks Heidi
Fold long tables worked well for me
Oh I want to make one of these, I'm horrible at matching colors, so I'm having trouble getting started.
Same here - I want to make one but selecting the colors/patterns from my fabric stash is enough of a challenge that I don't seem to make progress.
Sigh...☹️
Great idea . Hedi how do you do it all. God bless thank you ❤️🙏
Just wondering if you've ever put a bodice onto the skirt and made it a dress Heidi? I really like the skirt you're wearing too. 40 squares on the 4th tier might prove more doable for me. I appreciate all your tips so much and thank you so much again for all your help and support. It's very edifying. God bless you
No I have not simply because I prefer skirts over dresses but I think some have done something like that
Beautiful Heidi, well done and thanks so much for this video. I thought there might be about 80 squares and no way could my back handle all that but I did the maths and think it might be doable. How many different fabrics do you have and what's the least number of different fabrics I would need? I'm not a quilter so don't have a lot of variety. God bless you Heidi and thank God for giving you such a beautiful gift! Makes me so grateful. Thanks for sharing. Love from Ireland xx
I find no less than 6 different fabrics to look best but often will use up to 12 depending on what I have on hand
@@RainCountryHomestead Thank you so much Heidi! I'm hitting the charity shops today in search of anything cotton and then I'm going to check my stash too. Guess I'll have to clear a space too. Very exciting to be so inspired! Thanks so much again Heidi ☺
I am actually making another one of these skirts and on the third tier, I actually cut the squares 10 x 20. This made a less poofy and as long as I need them. I haven't finished it yet so I am hoping that works.
Hello Heidi,
I've watched the skirt Playlist a few times but I'm glad you posted this update (I was kind of hoping for it)...
I think I have enough fabric to make several skirts but my question is more fabric specific. I have cotton, blends, and sateen as well as heavier upholstery/curtain type fabric. Have you mixed fabric types when making these? Have u liked how they turned out?
I'm guessing upholstery or heavier would be better suited for winter/colder Temps.
I had actually started a skirt last spring but the squares I've completed were pieced together rather than the scissor cut/rip.
Yes, I have mixed all kinds of fabrics before from curtains (light weight and heavier weight), tablecloths, bedding, scarves, and more. As long as it is not too heavy it is not a problem, Just stay away from using thicker fabrics on the top tier as they will make the waistband too bulky
@Rain Country thank you for feedback reminder on waist band area. Good point, don't need more bulk there than necessary especially when sewing thru layers.
I noticed you mentioned bedding - have you used comforters or just basic linens?
I SO wish My grandma Annie was still alive she was a professional seamstress and could show me (in person) how to make your skirts... Their Beautiful, but I don't have the skills to do it. God Bless you and your family from middle GA 🙏 Kendra
Have you tried watching the skirt making videos where I break it down and show me sewing the items together?
If u can sew a straight line (seam), then the rest is just simple measuring and adding up numbers.u could do it.
@@RainCountryHomestead okay I'm going to try it🤗🤗
This might sound silly, but your skirt videos changed my life. I ended up making a patchwork one, then a prairie one out of bedsheets I loved (I wear that one daily), and another prairie one from thrifted sheets, then two Halloween fabric ones for me and my daughter. I am addicted and I feel so feminine, which is a big deal for me. I ONLY wear skirts now.
My next goal is to make a ragged quilt style skirt, I have jeans and some material from the thrifted prairie skirt, but also a satin kind of tablecloth…? Not sure those would work together..? Do you ever have to hand cut fabric that won’t rip properly? Also have you tried fleece with the skirts? I’d imagine that’s too thick.
Yes, some times I do have to hand cut
I love everything patchwork. I have a few tops that go with everything because.. patchwork.
I haven't done the skirt yet. It is on the agenda.
Have you seen the videos on what I call magic pants? They're wrap pants that are one flat piece after sewing one seem.. the rise seam and all the edges.
No pockets but fun pants.
I am sure they are similar to the wrap around shorts I made for myself and were real popular when I was in my early teens.
I love that orangish skirt with orange sweater. Would but that
I am not clear on how you did the holes for the ties, are they sideways or up and down? And where do I find your skirts for sale on line?
❤
I love the colors❣️ You do such an amazing job putting your colors together❣️ Do you have any tips that you can share?
Tips in general are covered in the video, color tips, well, it just depends on a person's eye. Not really sure now to teach people to look at colors other than pulling fabrics together and seeing how they look combined before cutting and laying out. If you start with a pretty print, then simply look at the colors in the print to find solids that would match
I taught living history and had to get used to the big pioneer farming skirts with aprons.
I’m interested in the skirt. How much do you charge for one? I don’t see it listed.
If you are talking about my Etsy store, as noted in the video and in the description box, you need to contact me via email to get the list of products and be put on the notification list for skirts when they are finished
When you use sheet fabric, is it cotton, poly, or a cotton poly? I can find the poly or poly cotton, but not cotton?
When I buy new sheets for fabric, I only buy 100% cotton but used sheets sometimes can be a blend
Regarding the rag style skirt and the edges of the fabric, would pinking shears achieve the same effect as snipping the edges with a regular pair of scissors?
They should but for denim they are hard to use and it is near impossible to cut more than one layer at a time. Some may find it easier but I know it would take me much longer doing it that way. I do not cut my pieces out in the first place, I rip them because fabrics will rip straighter than cutting and it is much faster but with pinking shears you would need to cut every piece and only in a single layer at a time
Greetings and yes the Lord is good all the time, I so love your patchwork skirts and would like to put in an order for one or several...how would I go about that?
I am not doing custom orders though I am making skirts to sell only as time allows. How it works is people email me at raincountryhomestead@gmail.com and let me know they want to be added to the skirt notification list. When I am able to complete a skirt, I send out an email to all on the list and then it is first come first serve. They sell within 10 minutes of sending out the email and there are over 200 people currently on the list so chance of getting one is slim and is all dependent on who sees the email and responds first. Right now it is the best i can do, which is why I created this video not just giving more tips on how to make them but to let people know about the full instructional playlist
@@RainCountryHomestead ok I understand...what is your price or do you discuss that via email if Im the one to respond first?
@@tjacksonkoon1403 Prices are listed in my full product list I send to those who email as I have different styles and each is a different price according to the time and material that goes into them
@@RainCountryHomestead thanks, take care
I can only hand sew for now and I’d like to know what type stitches would be used for the different parts of the skirt?
I would use straight stitch for most of it and whip stitch on the drawstring hole, hem, and drawstring/elastic casing
Do you put a liner inside?
no
You're the same height as me. This should work out great.
hi this is susan. so beautiful skirts! How much do you sell them for?
I am no longer selling them, sorry
Heidi, how many patchwork skirts have you made for yourself that you wear?
I really do not know how many as I rotate my skirts. So when my work skirts have been patched and patched again and are just getting too thin, I then take one of my oldest nice skirts and make it a work skirt and then replace that one with a new one.
@Rain Country
I asked bc I was thinking as I looked back over your skirt videos I would love to see a video with just the skirts you've made for yourself (or even including your most favorite skirts you've made via order)
I would find it fascinating to see how you mix color together with patterns...bc this is one of my biggest challenges & why I think I've hesitated. I've always wanted to make my own clothes - but didn't have the confidence. I can sew somewhat bc I've made quilts and hemmed pants. But doing something for me, isn't something I've taken the time to do.
Do you sell the skirts? Very interested.
I used to, not anymore
How small do the 6 squares go? My hips are around 30"... I love full skirts though!!
I hope you take time to listen to the full video as I cover that and also go over more on sizing in another video in the skirt making series I linked to in the description box
@@RainCountryHomestead I listened to the whole thing, I don't recall you mentioning an actual number for how small it will cinch up, but will definitely listen again. I went straight to the other playlist & started the one that you talk about sizing in. I've only listened to that one once. You said you can make a child's skirt 18-45". Do not recall if it had 5 or 6 squares.
@@medicinemom3620 I gave two different ideas and numbers in the above video starting at the 17:22 time stamp for those who do not want as much fabric. You must have missed that part
@@RainCountryHomestead 🤦♀️ thank you!! This is exactly why I listen to everything multiple times!!
