On the topic of Usopp, I know nobody asked, but Usopp is my favourite character. (I’ve watched anime through ep 488, read maybe 40 chapters here and there)
Yes he’s funny, and a great sniper, and a goofball, which make him likeable, but more than that, I think it goes back to the dreams of each original five members in chapter 100. King, Greatest, doing something that has never been done, and finding something that’s never been found. These near unreachable tasks, and then there’s Usopp, where he, stumbling over his words, just wants courage, to be a brave warrior of the sea.
All of these unfathomable goals, and to Usopp, just being gallant is unfathomable, but with this crew, he knows he is capable of it, and allows himself to dream to be a better version of himself, and I think that makes him endearing and sometimes (especially during Water 7) the most endearing member of the crew.

I love hearing Allen's story about finding and loving One Piece!
I found out about One Piece about the same time, in 2003, at Comic Con. Shonen Jump was about to start releasing a monthly magazine in America, and they gave a preview issue to Comic Con as free content. I still remember being confused by the format, and thinking One Piece, Naruto, and Shaman King were the same manga, hahaha!
Shortly thereafter, my cousin, who was a manga & anime expert, and really into computers, started downloading the One Piece & Naruto fansubs. He showed them to me and my younger brothers, and whenever we visited him, we'd watch up to what had most recently been released.
I remember the same note in Arlong Park about Nakama, I remsmber seeing the attack names stretch & expand, and eventually after seeing Naruto learn the Rasengan, I couldn't wait for my visits to this cousin to keep up with the series anymore, I had to start reading the manga, which lead to me reading manga online, using mIRC, and a lifelong addiction!
One Piece was one of the first manga I started following week to week, and I've been on this journey ever since!

I'm so glad for this discussion, Philip!
This duo with @TheLibraryofAllenxandria is a delight and the better version of a One Piece chat, in my opinion. I was happy for the One Piece Crew videos with Merphy and Mike when they were announced, and was bummed when you had to cancel them; I really don't get the fuss about some pseudo name spoilers, how could that push some people to be mean is baffling.
But, I have to say that there were many moments where Allen was geeking out with Merphy (which I get, I've been reading One Piece since 2000 and do the same with my oldest friend 😆) about stuff that would happen later in the manga (although without spoilers), and you and Mike were just smiling, clueless, waiting for the moment to pass, and it doesn't make for such an engaging/entertaining discussion video.
This feels more self-contained, and Allen can finally shine for what he brings to the table with his years of loving and growing through watching the One Piece anime (it reminds me of his excellent discussions on The Long Price Quartet).
It's just too bad he's wrong about Blackbeard 🤭 I liked what you said about him and Luffy being two sides of the same coin. One is giving his all to reach his dream with his nakamas, when the other literally killed a nakama for his dream.

A dynamic of the crew that I've really enjoyed in One Piece is that Oda never has Luffy use the position of Captain as a sort of hierarchy over other members. This again speaks to who Luffy is as a character and the trust he has in his crew.
In addition, we also get to see Luffy grow as a Captain throughout the series. Water 7 is an excellent example of this with the whole Merry, Usopp and Robin situation.

10:21 Yes! The “I want to live” scene is so good in both sub and dub, Yuriko and Stephanie are both so incredibly talented. The episode number is 278 if you want to watch it (Robin’s backstory starts at 275 but that scene in particular is 278)

I feel like anybody who dislikes Usopp just doesn't see that he's a regular guy on a crew full of monstrously powerful people. He's super scared all the time because a normal person would be terrified if they were being attacked by all these crazy things and getting into all of these horrible situations. Also even though he's always terrified, he still regularly risks his life for his friends. Usopp is a fantastic character, and I will stand by that forever.

These videos are always fantastic! It makes me reminiscent of my university literature classes. I agree with a lot of your takes regarding Oda being a true story teller. The way he orchestras background details to slowly build up meaning in front of your eyes sometimes without even realizing what's happening. Robin's backstory and 'I want to live' had that moment for me. Thanks for doing these videos, it's refreshing to have 'One Piece' content of this variety.
I do agree with Allen strongly on the scene in thriller bark that needs to be watched, it exist as a core scene in my head and was absolutely chilling in a triumphant way. I do recommend getting Allen to pick a few scenes to watch with the character first so you can get a proper sense of who they are. I love characters that can have fun but know when it's time to get to work.

oh my god philip thank you for your videos, your time, your content, everything. you are such a great guy just from a personality perspective i can tell from your insight, your interests, your way of speaking and listening, just your overall vibe is so wholesome and genuine. i love you as much as i can love a stranger on the internet. thank you so much for this FEAST. and those to come.
now i cant wait for your reaction and analsyis of the summit war (after thrillerbark through marineford) because everything you have mentioned you love so much about one piece, just like allen said, is amplified and relevant in those arcs. i understand you love this series already, but after this, you will TRULY love one piece. Im sure of it. i wish you a lot of fun and happiness, in your life and in your one piece reading experience.
also if you wanna look for scenes to watch in the anime, i think its best you go after those that interest you. the anime has never failed in those important moments that make you emotional, whether positively or negatively. so scenes youve already pointed out yourself like nami asking for help, robin wanting to live, sanji thanking zeff, also stuff like the walk to franky house, luffy and usopps fight, the departing of the merry, the farewell of vivi, the list can go on and on.
so id recommend choosing for yourself which scenes where impactful for you in the manga, and the anime will surely have amplified that moment and made it one of true greatness.
sorry for the long comment and thank your reading my dear nakama. take care.

Not gonna lie was really excited to hear you talk with someone that has read alot of the story, but I cant quite wrap my head around some of allen’s opinions😂.
Skypiea is one of THE arcs that is full of Oda’s expertise. Worldbuilding.
It sets up so much stuff for later while seemingly being its own story. Its full of humor, amazing scenery, gives us atleast 5 complicated characters ( Enel, ganfall, wiper noland calgara) and an AMAZING backstory that Goes 400 YEARS into the past.
Everyone can like what they like tho, every fan is a fan in their own way.
Looking forward to the conversation with merphy, keep doing what you’re doing.❤

I’ll be honest I love Usopp for many a reason, but something I love the most is that I feel as if usopp is the common person being put in these situations, someone who’s afraid. Someone who runs away from their problems but wants to face them head on, and sees these people that he looks up to and wants to be better not on for himself but for them, to he a brave and strong warrior of Elbaf. It’s inspiring! Seeing how he develops.

27:54 i strongly disagree with judging a character by their competence in fights. Battles are important in a pirate world, and all of them want to be strong. They don't want to hold the others back, they want to be stronger to help Luffy become the king of the pirates. But for Luffy you don't have to be super strong. In fact, in chapter 387 he says he has nakama who are not strong and because he wants to be with them he has to be stronger than anyone else so he doesn't lose them. The reason Luffy loves them is because they're good people, they're passionate, fun and interesting. Zoro's case is different, he actually wants to be the best swordsman. But the others are different. Nami wants to chart the world. Usopp wants to be a brave warrior of the sea. Sanji wants to find the all blue. Chopper wants to be able to cure any disease. Robin wants to find the history written in the Poneglyphs. Franky wants to build a ship and sail around the world with it. Being strong is a mean to an end. Nami for example only started using the Clima Tact in Alabasta, before that she couldn't fight as much buch her navigation skills are top notch but first and foremost we love her because she's a good person, she didn't become a bad person even in the face of so many adversities Arlong caused. The crew would die multiple times without each nakama. In Arlong Park, Luffy also explains it: he cant cook, he cant navigate. Without Chopper they could die from illness, without Nami they would sink in a storm, without Sanji they'd have vitamin deficiencies and so on. In Ennies Lobby Sanji tells Usopp that he might no be able to beat one of the CP9 members, but there was something he could do. And the friendship between Usopp and Luffy is so sweet, they are so idiot, their vibes just match. I also didnt like Usopp so much, I was young when ai first started reading so I also thought that strength was so important, but as soon as he left the crew and Luffy started smiling so much less I realized I actually loved Usopp too

your differences in opinion (specifically about skypiea) I think speaks for not only the fact that you guys are consuming different mediums but the differences of what each of you take away from the story and what each of you relate to and connect with more closely. Which I think goes to show how one piece is great for such a wide audience!
I also feel like a lot of the parallels to real world conflicts and peoples and ideologies go way over peoples heads while watching/reading one piece. Like how Skypiea is a clear commentary on colonialism. Said themes are what I love most about the series, yet there are many who enjoy the series as much as, if not more than me despite overlooking the political commentary that one piece is. Even as just a series with badass and hilarious characters and flashy fights and heartbreaking backstories, the story is a masterpiece.
