  • Jul.31 -- Despite the hype, virtual reality systems such as Oculus Rift and HTC Vive have seen sluggish sales. But one east coast company is convinced that VR will grow if it brings people together. Bloomberg's Anne Mostue goes inside MindTrek VR's new virtual reality arena, located outside Boston, to test it out.

video games were popularized primarily through arcades before they became accessible to homes: i dont see why VR would be any different.

Marketing VR to “replace” video games is just the wrong approach for VR. Thats why so many prototypes have failed. VR has so much more to offer than just sitting in a computer chair and puking on roller coasters.

Threat? To the business? This is obviously the wrong business to be doing business with. It should be about making this technology better and more affordable for everyone. Not dominating the market with something that most people won't have.
The type of technology they have has two major things that most people don't have: 1. Space, and 2. Wireless. Those, except wireless maybe, will be major factors that will easily keep them in business. Being able to actually be around other people and bump into them while you're in the VR space is cruicial.

Well the idea was to do the headsets first to keep costs down and get AAA games on it as that wouldn't be expensive, so the small user base wouldn't be an issue. Then the hand presence and room scale would be brought in. It jumped to the second stage from the beginning, and that raised the AAA game cost beyond what was profitable. So indi games are there. This is the cause of slow adoption along with price.
I think Oculus Quest, stand alone mobil VR console coming out in a few month will start turning things around. No gaming PC or console needed and only $399.

The reason VR didn't catch on is mainly because of the lack of AAA games, and people's computers. Not the pricey headsets. No one has a beefcake $3500 computer, and then is scared of $500 for a headset. Personally, I built the best PC i could (on a consumer level) and then bought a second hand Vive off ebay that was barely used months after. Me and my brother split it, so it was super cheap for us. VR will catch on. As soon as it becomes cheaper for the console people, it will take off.

Kyezie131 Two important things: Large AAA built from the ground up, and more reasons to buy one if you don’t like gaming.

I hope he has already paid for the equipment, because in the spring Oculus Quest comes out which allows you to do the same without heavy backpacks, for much less money.
Надеюсь, он уже окупил оборудование, потому что весной выходит Oculus Quest который позволяет делать все то же самое без тяжелых рюкзаков-ноутов, и за гораздо меньшие деньги
