One thing I noticed during my internship as a quant on a bank trading floor was that most people were trying too hard to compete with one another. They refused to help others because they thought that if another person did well, it would hurt their own chances of getting a return offer. I, on the other hand, helped everyone with some of the harder maths/stats/coding problems that they came to me to ask about, since they didn't cover some of these topics in university. Since they would come over to my desk, my manager saw that I was doing this and a couple of times he did mention that he liked that I was helping people. I believe this definitely played a role in getting a return offer.

This is a great point! Even in grad school I noticed the over competitive behavior for finding jobs. Helping others is a positive trait and is especially helpful in a career.

Hi Dimitri, first of all thanks for your insightful videos. I am a math undergrad in Zurich. I enjoy topics like Brownian motion and Probability theory. Is there a demand at risk departments of big banks for people with a math background, who want to work in less technical areas?

Are there any discernible differences between the quantitative finance scenes in the United States and London, if there are any?

Hi Dimitri, I'm in the interview stage for a Quant trading intern role at Ripple. Any particular resources you would recommend to practice Maths or Python for Data analysis? Or any other tips to help me get the internship? (I've had the HR background interview the next well be more technical)

Do you meditate? I would suggest meditating because it helped me focus on math longer, be less stressed when making decisions and quit alcohol. I think that you would become much more successful if you had a consistent meditation practice if you don't already.

Socialize Grind and Learn... A perfect summary!! I really liked the exploratory project part because even your manager may not know if it is possible!
