Zaku Atari Lynx Review

- This week we are reviewing the 2009 Atari Lynx homebrew developed by Penguinet (of Rikki & Vikki fame) and published by Super Fighter Team! The game is no longer available from either the developer or publisher, which isn't great because its being sold for a small fortune on eBay, but I absolutely love Rikki & Vikki so I needed to take a look at the game. Lets hope it becomes available in another manner really soon!
You can check out both the developer and publisher at their own websites below!

We score games on a scale of 1 to 5 and here is what each score means...
5 out of 5 is PERFECT! These are those rare games that everybody should love and own!
4 out of 5 is Great! Most people will want to play and buy these games!
3 out of 5 is Good. These games are pretty good despite their flaws.
2 out of 5 is Bad. These games aren't very good with some major flaws that hold them back.
1 out of 5 is Garbage! These games are barely playable and should be avoided. Waste of money best describes this stuff...
We also occasionally look at hardware, controllers, peripherals and similar stuff but we grade those on a scale of recommended, undecided and not recommended. These should be self explanatory...

The Atari Network has 3 goals (besides entertainment) that I hope embodies everything the channel does:
1. Bring awareness to Atari, especially the often ignored Tramiel and 7800 era
2. Make sure the hardworking people both new and old (from the old guard at Atari corp to the new developers keeping Atari alive) get the recognition that they deserve for their hard work
3. Preserve the history of Atari in the video game hobby so that it survives long after us

Initially, I was going to say that I had never heard of Zaku. When I went to the Penguinet site, I then remembered seeing it there when I was looking up Rikki & Vikki a few years ago. At the time, I ignored it since it wasn't available to buy. It would be fantastic if it became available on a digital store or included in some compilation.
I love the graphical design of the bosses. They look so good.
Great review, Jon.
@@socrates0603 the game does have a great art style. After more than 10 years of it being released, many of those where it was no longer available, it makes sense that people wouldn't remember it.
While I don't own the Lynx, I do own an Evercade EXP for which I purchased the two of what are now legacy Lynx game carts. I sure would love to add Zaku to the mix. If only Blaze would reach out to Penquinet. Thanks for another compelling review.
@@edgeofeden7583 one thing I know is that Tailchao from penguinet is open and willing to work with most companies...
I’ve always thought of this game as a 5 out of 5, but your con list is totally valid and I think you’re right giving it a 4.
I do class it as a must own - I really hope it gets rereleased one day.
I think it is a great looking and well executed game. My perspective on hand held games comes from growing up with the 70’s single games that just had blips and dashes of light. I did have an original GameBoy but only a few games. So seeing just about any game on the Lynx with full color is impressive to me.
@@Jolt7800 I have to admit I find the lynx impressive too. But as with pengunets other game, this one is a graphical marvel for the console it is on!
Seventies born here too, but did most of my gaming in the eighties. And yes while i agree this game is amazing for (what i have seen of) the Lynx standard i have to admit finding it harder to get into the 8 bit stuff, especially the sound. Gonna try this out and see how i feel, but i doubt it will win me over. Still love pce and md games so there is a chance ;)
Even a rare game deserves its credits if its good enough.
Zaku has fantastic presentation, from the intro to the surprisingly catchy music (I've caught myself humming it out loud long after putting my Lynx down). Graphics are among the best on the Lynx I feel, with multiple layers of parallax, huge detailed bosses, and great use of color. I'm not really a fan of the, er, "furry" art style of Zaku and Iremsha in particular, but it's very well done for what it is. The characters all have a ton of charm, personality, and humor.
Typically I couldn't care less about the story in shmups, so it doesn't even factor in to my review.
Like you, I do wish the shield was more reliable and that health pickups were automatically applied. I also found the standard rapid fire attack to be almost useless, especially with no powerups on offer. Conversely, I found the rear rocket attack useful enough that I almost wish it had been mapped to B instead -- I don't think I've ever mashed that poor Option 1 button as heavily as I have in this game! And if health pickups worked automatically, that would free Option 2 up for a compromise solution where pressing it could swap between the Opt 1 and B button functions.
Overall Zaku is a fun and addictive title, and an incredibly impressive homebrew effort.
Great video as always! I hope this is available soon!
@@tomevil6 me and you both
great game my atari brother..zaku is maybe one of the best lynx games..we need a review for alpine games and for the new amazing game odynexus..i am looking everywhere to pay for a rom odynexus and alpine games
It's a nice looking game, thanks for the review Jon !
@@pierregareau6590 thanks for watching
@@pierregareau6590 don't doxx him!
I have seen Zaku somewhere on google, i thought zaku was a boy but i guess i learned something new
Thanks for sharing. 👍🏻👍🏻
I have played Zaku a little, but not enough to give it a score. You should have used a Lynx I for your score, as I think they look better.
@@jeremiahthomas8140 but I like the lynx 2! I had those cards designed for months along with score cards for the Atari 8 bits because I knew I'd get them eventually. Maybe I can make a lynx 1 score card set and swap between them
I've played Zaku, but I didn't complete it. Nevertheless your review is accurate, it's an 8/10 game, and probably the best shoot 'em up on the Lynx. How do you think it compares?
It looks great!
Too bad that there's no repros of this game so everyone can play it on their Lynx if they don't have flashcarts.
Moun 10
But 10
😔
Stay classy he says, firing rockets from the game character’s butt… 😂
@@KrooTon yeah but firing rockets from the game characters butt... In a classy way
@@TheAtariNetwork 🧐
Is the rom available for purchase?
@@jaredbrown691 unfortunately no. But you never know, if there is enough interest then maybe Atari proper will take notice and license it for future releases...
@@TheAtariNetwork game has always looked amazing, I’ll figure out a way to play it on my mister fpga. Keep up the great work, your videos keep me interested in trying new things Atari. I’m determined to beat midnight mutants one of these days after watching your playthroughs.
