As much as I love Sergio's work, when it came to cartooning, Gary Larson was mine. I even managed to get a number of panels in a now defunct regional newspaper called "Northwest Comic News" here in Oregon.
Short but great interview, thank you. Sergio Aragones is a legend. Groo was the first comic book I bought regularly, many years ago. Picked up the Groo vs. Conan graphic novel recently and it is very funny. The detail in Aragones' work is still amazing.
Sergio's work is not only brilliantly hilarious, but also inspirational. Groo is such an amazing character and so specific his comics became a secret shorthand between us and our lead actor (who also is a huge Groo fan) for our own live action comic series here on youtube. If we could channel only a fraction of the silliness his work embodies then we would consider our work a success. His work is so elegant in its simplicity! Thanks for posting.
True! When I was in high school, Stan Lee gave some characters I had drawn to Sergio and used them in Groo the Wanderer #1. Stan Lee called me and I missed the call. The printed finished comic was delivered to me weeks after. Weirder: I didn't know of this until I was sitting (sleeping) in class and someone dropped the comic off at my school to the main office and it was plopped in front of me in class and my characters were in the story. This was before the Marvel empire as we know it now. I was a dumb kid who totally mishandled the situation and lost an opportunity.
Cool story! My cool Stan Lee story goes back about 12 years. I had a complete run of Amazing Spider-Man from 1963 to that present time. I found a personal email of his and sent him a note asking if he would autograph my issue #1 if I fed-ex'd to him. I had it back in two weeks. Pretty darn cool.
He never ceases to amaze, but you have to keep your eyes peeled for more than 5 seconds... I might have thought, "This looks quickly drawn and the feel are but an afterthought", but besides all the ornately detailed scenes from time to time, you have historical accuracy exploding almost unexpectedly in like crazy. The research and knowledge about structures and accessories and fasteners is remarkable. One comic really runs the gamut of almost a fusion of styles, yet all distinctly Sergio!
The guy was a class act. Wish he was still around to entertain us. (Edit - he is! MY uncle, who drew a few cartoons for Playboy years ago, told me he had died.)
@@groowanderer Thanks, Groo. It turns out that my elder son (26) has all the Groo books, which my younger son (15) is devouring as I write this. I've been browsing them too. Really excellent books.
I so love the Groo comics. I remember when I picked up an early issue, the one where he is shanghaied and first meet captain Ahax. I was reading it on the buss ride home laughed so much that I got problems breathing. A rather old passenger ended up asking what was so funny, so I let him read it and if I had not grabbed him, he would have fallen out of the seat laughing. The comic shop told soon after about an old man who had walked in and bought a copy of every issue they had of Groo.
Dear Sergio, I am a kid in 5th grade who loves to draw, I wanted to be just like you, but not join MAD, I draw all the time, and hopefully, to be cartoonist when I grow up. I love The marginals in MAD.
Groo was awesome. Even the letters page was awesome. Writer Mark Evanier used to make wisecracks about how Sergio can't speak a lick of English. It was funny as hell. His artwork is so insanely detailed and the crowd scenes will blow your mind.
hey man, the rudeness isn't necessary, just talking about a comic book character! Imagine Pixar gives Groo the same treatment they gave the Incredibles, I'd love to see that!
Sergio Aragones is actually one of my biggest influences.

Ruferto!
man...this guy is a legend and deserve a medal...Groo is a legend of him
I'm a legend of him?
back when he signed my comics, he would draw a picture of Groo next to his name fast as shit! Thanks Sergio!
He has an epic mustache.
Sergio is the best man. So kind!
This man is an international treasure.

Now I'm on the hunt for more interviews. He seems like such a cool down to earth guy
Great comic and superb cartoonist. Loved his Mad Magazine stuff.

Which Characters were they? Did i slay them?
Soldiers on a ship wearing Devo hats and a big black guy that looked like Mr T. Probably others, slayed all I believe.

He is absolutely my favorite, period!
Greatest ever story teller!
Tis a paltry, he simply followed around the greatest warrior ever, in I, groo!
Big fan of S.A. here, I loved his bits in Mad Magazine, Groo, his border cartoons in the old bloopers TV show, everything.
Agreed. Wordless in MAD magazine but really funny. And as well the side drawings throughout the magazine. I love his work!
The guy was a class act. Wish he was still around to entertain us. (Edit - he is! MY uncle, who drew a few cartoons for Playboy years ago, told me he had died.)
I only know his work from MAD, but I will definitely check out Groo. There's something especially lovable and charming about Sergio's work.
Groo is best, just ask me I'll tell you

This gentleman is a darn genius! Bless him...

Parabéns Aragonês pelo seu trabalho.
Long live Groo and his creator!!!! Sergio, you're the greatest!!!!!
Yes, yes. Who needs a queen when you have groo? Wait maybe I said that wrong.
Groo is one of the greatest comedies ever created.
Groo is great, Sergio and his moustache are as well!
I are great?
Yes, yes I are!
Love Sergio. Also that guy in the bg with the fedora is so stylish.
I've been a huge fan of Sergio. Way back. Back to Mad and Bloopers and Practical Jokes
Sergio is the best humor artist that ever put pin to paper.

I love The marginals in MAD.
Damn, it's been 6 years since this comment
Just out of curiosity, how have you been doing since then?
Great interview but way too short. Groo is essential and should be on everyone's shelf.

Imagine Pixar gives Groo the same treatment they gave the Incredibles, I'd love to see that!
The two thumbs down here must be fans of "Nancy" and "Little Dot".
Point me towards this Nancy and little dot! They shall pay for their crimes against groo!
Cheese dip !
Two, please.
He reminds me of Wilford Brimley lol
