I've seen a lot of these videos where they "upgrade" the 90s bikes to 1X and/or somehow fit disc brakes to the old frames. I've often wondered why. I think you did it right. It's practical and beautiful.
This looks great, but disc brakes give you ultimate stoppping power in all conditions. Cantilever breaks, even good ones, can't compare. If it's for showoff and city cruising why not? If it's for descends I would even prefer mini v-brakes rather than cantis.
@@JarosawTabor For sure. But you have to think about how many kilomteres he wants. If he will have 3000 in a year with it, discs are prefered, but if it is for fun with all together 100 km, this brake is ok. But this brake lever and a steel frame is not for the 3k km....
@@JarosawTabor Nah. Good V-brakes are more than good enough for 95% of the riding most people do. If you're a pro, or choose to ride super gnarly stuff regularly, go with disks, but for the rest of us V-brakes are perfectly fine.I speak from experience. In my work as a bike mechanic in The Netherlands, I test ride every bike that I've setup before customers come and pick it up. Most of them have disk brakes, and hardly any of them can match the modulation and power of the V-brakes that are on my own bike, the one I ride to and from work with every day AND do all my mountain biking and gravel riding with.
@@JarosawTabor putting disc brakes on this bike would require a fork built for discs (which would have heavier blades to deal with those forces) or i guess you could YOLO it, weld some tabs, and risk catastrophic failure. But yeah if stopping power is what you're after, i guess technically you do stop pretty quick when your fork bends in half and your face gets an instant introduction to the dirt 😂
Thank you for this. I’ve restored a few bikes in the past, but nothing like this. The shimano rear derailleur waiting in a box for 30 years made my heart happy. Respect.
Thanks for sharing this amazing piece of art! Just love everything about your work, every little detail and inspirational restoration on an object that makes life better!
I just happened to find this video. It is perhaps the best restoration video I have seen in a very long time. The painstaking process of polishing and repainting the old components was beautiful. Your decision to not pick modern parts was also great. I have a soft corner for cantilever brakes and I felt so happy to see those Avid's. I also liked how you kept picking golden bolts out of plastic bags. And the final result was superb.
@@TheraPi I have used very few V brakes but all of the ones I have used have had one thing in common- they are very difficult to modulate. I have often ended up grabbing a handful.
I did something similar in the early 90s to my '89 Saracen Trekker MTB (Deore II GS) with dropped Cinelli bars and ultegra bar end levers after watching John Tomac, an odd bike as It had U brakes front and rear! (in the "normal" places) so the braking was phenomenal with the Aztec pads I added, I also had Hardpack 1.5 tyres, which I loved a very narrow tyre even for the time, with no suspension you felt everything as it wasn't just gravel I rode, This is a lovely build, you really have taken extra care in restoring and selecting everything!, I would be scared to ride this, looks so perfect, even when you buy brand new, bikes do not look like this good
This is a sublime rebuild. Not too much bling, just the perfect balance which gives it a pure classy look. You'r restoration of the parts and wheels is a thing of beauty. I watch a lot of this type of thing here and have done similar projects of my own but I think yours is the best one I've yet seen. Thank you for sharing.
Beautifully done, with taste, care and quality. The brass "custom junkie" accessories are a lovely touch. Good to see those "centre-pull" rim brakes being fitted too. I used to do things like this back in the 70s, although with more standard parts from the local bike shop.
Sehr geil.
@@Velofil That is the problem with trying to get specific older parts. I recently had a GT Karakoram with full LX group set but the combo brake lever shifters were destroyed internally (someone had clearly tried to take them apart and fix without knowing what they were doing) and I wasn't able to locate the same parts. I've set aside the remaining useable parts for a different build.
I see you are a man of class also. All my bikes feature KMC gold chains as the little cherry on top. The metallic flake in the beautiful blue paint with the beauty of the silver shine on components is truly gorgeous. There is too much black on bikes today, and we, The Bling Warriors, are in a battle against it. I cannot give enough kudos to you. Well done, sir.
very good work - congratulations . I've rebuilt a few bikes similar to yours and also got good feedback on how great it all is. BUT, no-one wanted to pay the price for it, that to all the comments that think it's soooo good. think about how much a refurbished bike like that would be worth to you.
This would have to cost 1500€ minimum, gotta be nearly 1000 in it in parts alone. Still absolutely stunning, and probably nicer than most new bikes under 2k.
Nice adaptation that respected the original ethos while making it useful for modern context. And BEAUTIFUL. I didn't think those old STI brifters could ever be made to look nice again. The only thing I would have done differently is to wax the chain so it stays all blingy like that.
Funny, because that's what I did in 90s. Coming from MTB at the time I wanted a bike for road and offroad, and in 1996 I started from a custom-made steel frame designed for cyclo-cross, mounting with a mix of components, with the target of a allrounder, ready for travels too. At the end, I only used for five years, then I bought one of the first endurance road bike, lighter and faster. But I still have my protogravel and I ride it in vintage events.
This is an amazing rebuild! I personally would need lower gears for where I ride, I have a triple on mine with a 30T small ring and I want to go smaller. It is setup more like my road bikes.

It looks really good, but a part of me wanted to keep the original paint, it seemed to be in good shape and a genuine 90s touch. Metallic blue looks good too, the final result is 10/10

Do you do streaming where there could be a QA? You seem a trustworthy professional, I'd be curious about your opinion on many things.
it's simpler to keep the cantilevers with the right pull ratio for these brake levers. Once the pad geometry is properly set up and the right length yoke is implemented they will stop just fine with with nice modulation. The one piece yoke is best as a safety precaution in case the cable disconnects from the head of the cable ... yes rare. But if the front brake does the type with a cable and floating yoke the cantilevers will open , the carrier cable will dig into the tire and the front wheel will instantly stop rotating ( a knoby tire certainly will)...not good at all ....over the handle bars and your head is sailing right into the tarmac. The rear will do the same and skid out of control until the tire blows ...also not good. That is why I never use that set up if possible or at least put a reflection bracket underneath to catch that carrier cable. That is also why Shimano made those one piece units as a safety precaution because so many removed the reflector bracket. That yoke that came with those brakes notoriously cuts a few strands of the cable when the allen bolts are tightened to. I know it's a rare failure but having worked on tens of thousands of bicycles I also know it does happen as I've had a few (not because it was frayed) do that in my own hands as I was testing for this in the stand. A catch post made from a 6×1.0 mm bolt and spacers would work too.
