  • In this video, our in-house reviewer, Martin Stimming reviews Vermona's MKIV version of their classic DRM1 analog drum synthesizer. 25 years on the market the DRM-1 is one of the longest running electronic music instruments. Optically this update is still the same as the first incarnation but under the cover the team at Vermona thoughtfully tweaked frequency ranges, revamped control curves, adjusted levels and redesigned sub-circuits.
    Stimming puts this new version of an electronic music production staple through it's paces. Let’s see what his conclusion is...

    My first time seeing this guy - he's very entertaining. As for Vermona, I have to applaud them because why mess with perfection? Rather than having their original model disappear, forcing Behringer to do a remake due to scarcity of a classic like so many synths we know of, they are keeping the market saturated with availability. Love my MKIII!!

    I have a mk3. I love it’s industrial design. I feel like I am controlling a nuclear reactor, trying not to go into meltdown. I run it through my octatrack, used for sequencing and fx. It has the same volume balance issue, but I always start off with all volume knobs minimised and bring them up one by one to taste. A bit of compression and verb sounds great. Brilliant entertaining review. Thanks.

    I had a mkiii and liked it but really wished it could be modulated. I know it would add to the cost but a version with a big CV expander or midi control of CCs would be unbelievable.

    • @naveengumpeni3884
      @naveengumpeni3884 3 года назад +2

      yeah, i can't believe they "updated" this to mkiv and still don't have midi control of anything other than triggering a note. i guess there's at least velocity sensitive trigger ins, but still...

    • @Space_pulse
      @Space_pulse 3 года назад

      @@naveengumpeni3884 I agree. I loved my mk3, but really wanted to be able to sequence it with an Elektron or something, so i could focus more on playing keys or fidgeting with the modular when I couldn’t be tweaking this all the time. Or if I didn’t have enough fingers to turn all the knobs I wanted.
      The only other complaint I had was actually with the response curves of some of the knobs, especially attack and decay. It sounds like they addressed that, which I love, but I’d like digital control over things, too. Especially now that it has USB. That would probably increase the price a good bit, though.

    • @Decoy303

      I don't think they had live performance in mind when creating this, and that's okay with me. I say create the tones you want with this thing and then resample them into something you can tweak those sounds live in such as a daw or maybe these new mpc dawless units.

      @@TwinCitiesOxygen I would in no way want to answer for @ihearanewworld, but I had the MKIII for a few months, and it was fun, but the (understandable) lack of parameter automation means it somewhat suits certain types of workflows e.g. :
      - Endless sound design/sampling;
      - Meticulously recording each drum synth separately, or
      - Very drum-centric music where you can focus all attention on the DRM.
      The MKIV will be the same deal. Although I still really want one (again)…

    “Nicely shaped edge in the back so it doesn’t take more space than it needs to do it from itself in the rack!”... my thoughts on my mkiii, exactly! I’m really relieved by that notched out zone is there. To protect the fat 1/4” and MIDI cable plugs that would otherwise stick out, annoyingly. My Vermona DRM1 wish list is pretty short: “Please Vermona, can we have one of those fancy 20-turn precision potentiometers with the knobs with the counter and latch? instead of the single sweep ones, at least for the PITCH on the KICk?!!” THANKS FOR SHARING THIS, STIMMING!!

    Pure/raw is a very good thing to cut through a mix or slam hard in a club. When recording it at home just run it through saturation and parallel compression to the level of warmth and thickness you like. Once I borrowed a JoMoX XBase 09 for a live show. The clean sound at home sounded thin, weak and weird. In the club it was beastly (given you plug it through an analogue mixer straight into the PA and don't run it through the cheap AD/DA of a mobile interface/computer). When I recorded it at 96KHz resolution I saw in RX that it outputs sonic content all the way up to 60KHz. Although we supposedly can't hear this with our ears, I'm left wondering if, in a club on a good system, we can't somehow feel this...

      @@TwinCitiesOxygenAnalog Heat would be perfect for this.
      Parallel compression (or New York compression) is when you compress part of the signal and leave the other part uncompressed. E.g. 50/50

    Great demo of the sounds. Very informative too. I wonder though, isn’t it possible to run midi into the digitakt and use the drm1 as a midi controller? How dope would that be? So you get the material into the digitakt then immediately then use all the knobs to perform. I hope this is true.

    What a performance :D love it. Gotta say that I miss some CV controllability at least for a few parameters per voice. Ich hatte mal die einzelne DRM2 Voice. Das Ding hat sehr schön gedrückt und tolle Sounds geliefert. Leider war es so, dass der Oszillator immer durchlief, also die Wave wurde mit dem Triggersignal nicht neu gestartet. Und wenn man dann irgendwo auf der Welle den Sound abgerufen hat, kam es zu immer unterschiedlichen Klick Geräuschen, die mich sehr gestört haben. Das mag bei härteren Kicks nicht so auffallen, aber wenn man da etwas sanftere Sound haben will stört es (zumindest mich) total. Beim DFAM hab ich das gleiche Problem, weshalb der für mich als Kick nicht nutzbar ist, wenn man nicht absampled, so wie ich das damals mit dem DRM2 gemacht habe. Lange Rede kurzer Sinn, ist das hier immer noch so? Oder wird der Oszi mit dem Trigger neu gestartet?

      Yes, we are still doing Electronic Beats TV too but less techy. In 2 weeks there is a new series with Stimming on EB.TV called Beats on a budget. Music production with low budget and for newbies.
      So you have to stay on both channels 😉

    I am still in love with the MKIII, especially for Tabla type sounds and playing Indian-classical-elektro hybrid music. I also pair it with the Digitakt for sampling and modern/acoustic drum sounds. The improvements here are nice, but I wonder if they went a little over the top with the aggression?
    I guess I am sort of glad they didn't introduce any modulation, because it means I still have a few years with my MKIII before I will replace it.

    Hi there, am a little bit new to analogue so just want to check a couple things please if someone wouldnt mind enlightening me. I want to be able to hook this up to logic pro x and effect stuff from there. Am thinking it might be an idea to buy a sequencer like the beatstep pro or something? Or do some use in the box solutions? So am guessing I can then connect the BSP to Logic and effect stuff in real time? Also can you separate all the tracks into your daw for control afterwords? So for example could you go from bsp then have all tracks on seperate audio tracks within your daw?
    Can someone try and explain the possibilities of what can and cant be done in simple terms haha
    Ive seen some talking about how you cant edit velocity?
    You could connect this to interface via midi and play notes on midi controller or something then the drum machine will respond and will play back what youve inputted in?
    Can someone also please explain the difference with the trigger input version and why you would want to have these inputs?
    Would appreciate any help as have been eying up vermona for ages now

      Lots to talk about here, I'll try my best.
      *"...[should I buy] the beatstep pro or something? Or do some use in the box solutions? So am guessing I can then connect the BSP to Logic and effect stuff in real-time? Also can you separate all the tracks into your daw for control afterwords? So for example could you go from bsp then have all tracks on seperate audio tracks within your daw?"*
      So, I think what you're getting confused with here is that the Beatstep pro is _just_ a sequencer. No audio is passed through the beatstep pro. Instead, you would route audio from the synth/drum machine to a mixer or audio interface. So, theoretically, if a drum machine has a dedicated output for every track and you have enough ports on your audio interface, you can record every track separately and edit the audio separately.
      Some drum machines also have their own audio interface and transmit audio over USB, which can be super convenient and mean you don't need like eight spare tracks on your audio interface to record every track. Some drum machines also let you choose what comes out of the master and what comes out of the other outputs. Unless you have an interface or mixer with a gazillion inputs, you're generally going to have to prioritise. Sometimes you're fine to just take the master out, but if you have a couple of extra ports you would first want to separate the kick drum from everything else, and then maybe think about separating the snare or main hat (though it depends on the genre).
      As for using a Beatstep Pro with your DAW, it's doable and a lot of people get heaps out of that, but it's probably not going to be as smooth as you have in your head. The Beatstep Pro is great as a standalone thing to jam with and come up with ideas, and you could record the audio of that with your DAW and then later go through and properly edit it. However, if you want to use both simultaneously as part of the process, then that can be a bit awkward. Your DAW is essentially an insanely complex sequencer (with an insanely complex mixer to boot) so you basically end up trying to use two sequencers with each other, which doesn't really work that well (especially when they're not both hardware). You could just use your DAW to sequence the drum machine, it's a little dull but it works and you don't need more hardware. If you have a software controller for your DAW (not familiar with Logic but for example something like the Ableton Push or Maschine) that is able to work as a step sequencer, then you're pretty much on par with the Beatstep Pro but in a software-based setup.
      So to summarise, if you got a Beatstep Pro, it'd give you that more tactile workflow, but to get that in the box you'd have to record what you do and edit it later. If you just use software to sequence it, then you'd get a workflow more integrated with your DAW (allowing for easier, more continuous composition instead of having to break it into two parts), but the sequencing perhaps won't be as fun or inspiring. It's quite difficult to have the best of both worlds, unfortunately. In my experience, I usually have the most success when I make a rock-solid loop using a hardware drum machine/sequencer, and then I record that and use it in a track. I don't love this because I don't get to do anything particularly dynamic and the track isn't really built around the hardware, but it's just what's worked best for me in the past. I also often record samples and then sequence them in audio, which again means I don't get to tweak the sounds after they're recorded.
      *"...you can't edit velocity?"*
      I don't know too much about the details of this drum machine but from a quick Google I think you can edit velocity externally, but the device itself only has simple buttons which don't respond to velocity. If that's true then it just means that to take advantage of velocity, you'd have to use an external MIDI controller or sequencer. The BSP pads for example _are_ velocity responsive, so you can hook that up to it and it'll work great. People might be talking about editing the velocity curve or the velocity that is played when you press the button? But yeah from the look of it you could use an external MIDI controller to get velocity functionality.
      *"...play notes on midi controller or something then the drum machine will respond and will play back what youve inputted in?"*
      Not sure if this is related to the last question but just thought I'd clarify. If you plug a MIDI controller directly into this then you will be able to play it through that, in most cases without setting anything up. Usually with drum machines, every drum is mapped out on one MIDI channel and starts from some arbitrary octave (I think it's usually middle C). So eg. C might be your kick, C# snare, etc. This means you can't play melodically, though some machines do let you play melodically (I don't believe this is one of them). If you have a USB MIDI keyboard, you can either get a converter, or you can plug the drum machine into your computer (it has USB MIDI, not much advantage using your interface in the middle), and then you'd have to go into your DAW and set up the MIDI from your keyboard to go straight to the drum machine, which isn't hard, but it won't just instantly work like plugging a controller straight into the drum machine.
      *Trigger inputs*
      Trigger inputs are used a lot in modular for sequencing. Basically, if you send a click into a trigger input, it'll trigger that track. The Beatstep Pro has those 10 drum track outputs on the back - those are trigger outputs, you could sequence by plugging one into each of the drum machine's trigger inputs. However, this drum machine also has MIDI in, so if you're not sure, you're probably best just using MIDI. Trigs are a lot more primitive but give more flexibility for modular.
      Hope this helps, if you have any further questions feel free to ask.

    I love my DRM MKIII....I honestly can't tell much of a difference aside from it looks like the 'sweet spots' are much broader maybe. It's not the #1 Stunna drum synth/machine. Meaning, it's probably going to need assistance, a wingman and it will take some extra work to build a kit. That being said, I've yet to find any drum machine/synth, groovebox, sample based instrument, mono synth, poly synth, or any other instrument that would fill the space without a second layer. I'm pretty much in agreement with you but starting with DRM is my favorite to build a foundation. Especially independent outs into efx racks both in the box and out. It's no9t the most practical option but I usually work better within limitations that are still legit in their own right. Not sure that made any sense...anyways, I love your music, your demos and the fact you gave this gem another try and shared the experience with us all. Cheers from Atlanta, Georgia USA

That's what led me to sell my mkii years and years ago though I'm not sure I realized that's what I didn't like about it at the time.
