Clint, I'm the writer of the "Computer Chronicles Revisited" blog you referenced on your Christmas video. This was a great find! I've never taken the time to look into the theme music myself as I have enough to do researching the content of the show. But I should've known you'd be the one to track this down. 🙂
I haven't seen that Network Music logo in years. Worked in a small tv studio that had the whole library on CD, only then I realized that was what the Weather Network was using for their music (early/mid 90's and for quite some time afterwards) - and yes, this very song was used for forecasts too.. reminds me of cold winter days checking the weather before everything was on your phone.
The original weather channel music was done by Trammel Starks, a 3-CD set called Music for Local Forecasts that IIRC came with the Weatherstar machines. It's available online if you look in the right places. My son has one of the tracks as his ringtone and nearly everyone says "Hey that sounds familiar.."
@@LGRBlerbs When I first discovered Computer Chronicles, I went on one hell of a binge watch session and learned an absolute truckload of computer history! RIP Gary Kildall, your contributions to the computer industry are shamefully lesser known.
Welcome to the endlessly deep rabbit hole of production music! There’s a shocking amount of this stuff that’s actually available on streaming sites like Spotify (including Byte By Byte!) I like having it play stations based on songs and seeing what familiar stuff I find. Then it’s a series of Google searches to find where I remember songs from.
Back when the Internet was still the Wild West, I found some interesting uploads, like one that was from the agency that made some Atari ads but couldn’t recognize anything from it. These apparently were made for internal use, just in case they needed to re-record something or use it for something else, like local ads. it seems they weren’t even made for archiving purposes.
If you're interested in the second opening theme (introduced with the 1990 opening sequence) check out Zenith by John Manchester. It's on the Omnimusic volume "Fusion." OM 9 on CD, OM 152 on vinyl.
Reminds me of like old Epcot Communicore music back when Epcot used to be really cool. Love it! ❤. But best is how it's actually making Clint giddy lol. His enthusiasm is infectious😊
That's awesome. The CC song reminds me of Sunday afternoons watching PBS with my mom as a kid. Computer Chronicles, This Old House, The Woodwright's Shop, Julia Child, and the New Yankee Workshop,. then later in the evening, Are You Being Served, Monty Python and Dr. Who. Better days, man.
It's fun getting to listen to full versions of TV themes, particularly the ones that get stuck in our minds for decades, for me it's Blockbusters theme (UK version, theme was called "Quiz Wizard", composed by Ed Welch), when done right, music really sticks with us, even if it's just for a TV show... :)
4:00 What the heck... A Japan Railway chime as the power-on sound? Someone's going to have soooome trouble. Anyway, awesome video, I didn't know you could still get these soundtrack records!
Wow. Thanks so much for showing this. I've now found C. Palmer's other works and just enjoying them so much. It's just all kinds of late 70s to mid 80s themed instrumental music. I also recognize "Ponderosa" from the _Pioneer Spirit_ EP as being used by United Artists Theatres for one of their on-screen policy trailers!
I love finding out where stuff like this comes from! My grandpa was a doctor and would get promotional casette tapes from pharmacutical and mecial device companies. I discovered them when I was working in the production studio of my college radio station. So commercial musical intros, outros and whips would pop up regularly on those commercial tapes. I would record them to half-inch loop carts and get them all cued up like Laurie Anderson. I'm so happy I got to experience this all before digital
Love the Computer Chronicles music, lot of those songs on the album were used in network promos, I think I’ve heard them from Disney channel or those VHS educational programs that we watched in school!
I loved CC back in the day. I wish there was a hardware-focused show like that today. Of course, we have it even better today with the plethora of tech tube, but you always tuned into CC because it was one of the few places you could get any computer news.
That's a great find, LGR. About 20 or more years ago, I was lucky enough to buy 12 to 15 Network records from a Canadian eBay seller as a single bulk lot (which worked out to maybe $3 to $5 per record) and one of the volumes had an exciting intro theme as heard during the 80s on the Super Channel network before a movie would premiere on TV. That record had other variations of the same theme. :)
I've found so many amazing albums like this on YT, used for musical interludes, background music and whatever else TV and video producers need music for.
I've watched every episode of Computer Chronicles, most of them multiple times. But I'm still hoping you are going to do some more videos featuring it. Maybe a video that just features some highlights from the Random Access File to track the computer news over the years. Or maybe some of the predictions that were made and how close or far they ended up being from what really happened.
I've listened to a fair number of library tracks (especially sonoton, where I even mimicked the album/single covers for my own work). The "other arrangement" you hear isn't really another arrangement and is quite common on library compilations; many instruments are simply removed so that you can continue the song without the bombastic hooks interfering with a presenter's speech. You synchronise the tracks and then fade or jump between them in post if I recall correctly so you can keep the song going whilst keeping the speaker legible. Perfect example I can think of off the top of my head is the Hay's Travel theme.
@@LGRBlerbs I hope you can avoid using this cheap record player with this record as much as possible. As TechMoan Matt found while reviewing a few of these cheap mechanisms, they tend to have pretty high downforce, which can damage records. Best to preserve it for the good setup :)

Those cheap turntable mechanisms sound awful playing more modern complex music but sound okay for 70s/80s synth - and the crackling, low bass gives it an authentic broadcast sound.
Fun fact Clint: the music done for the show from the late-80s onwards titled "Zenith", was by the same guy who had done music for good ol' EPCOT Center back in the day. I wish I could get all these on original record, but I guess for now I"ll have to settle buying off iTunes.

Wow, the thought never crossed my mind that this might exist. I had always assumed the theme was something written for and original to the show. My record player isn't even hooked up at the moment but this is definitely going onto the Wantlist on Discogs. Hopefully the existence of this video and the fact that you paid like 3 times as much as what the last copy sold for doesn't make this impossible to get a hold of or too expensive to even bother.
Stuff like this makes me wish Wendy Carlos would release her work on streaming services Or at least make them legally available in some fashion. But my mind really jumps to that thought just because it's 80s synth music.
Woah thats awesome. Hope Ol' Stewart is doing okay, I know his last Twitter post was about back surgery a couple years ago and when I'd tried looking for anything newer a few months ago I discovered a obit for his wife from March of '24. Hopefully the man is okay and just nerding out in peace.
Speaking of "the song is longer than the intro", long-running UK police drama/soap "The Bill" used Overkill by Andy Pask and Charlie Morgan. Everyone knows the first part they use for the show, but then it goes into a synth vortex which was almost never played.

I feel like it's childhood mixed with Saki Kaskas doing synth and such. Love it!
I saw on Woot a Corsair gaming computer with a wood grain front and instantly thought of you.
Speaking of "the song is longer than the intro", long-running UK police drama/soap "The Bill" used Overkill by Andy Pask and Charlie Morgan. Everyone knows the first part they use for the show, but then it goes into a synth vortex which was almost never played.
Computer Chronicles is classic! Fun fact: The US Air Force also used the same soundtrack in their B-1B Lancer bomber promotional film in the 1980s.
