Getting a lot of people asking me how I got it running on Windows 10. Well, "running" doesn't mean stable. I still run into issues with the game crashing to desktop, freezing and corrupting my saves. There are guides online you can find for getting the game to run in Windows 10 but it won't be a stable experience. Just do a bit of research and googling, that's how I got it working in some way.
Ironically nowadays sometimes the best way to play old games is to have a separate linux partition and use wine / proton. Takes a bit of research to understand how to get stuff working sometimes but if it just refuses to work on win10 its worth a try (also linux is free and runs on literally any toaster you throw it at so theres no reason not to try it when desperate)
I was lucky enough to be working in QA at Electronic Arts Los Angeles when this was in production. What a blast to test on! The bugs were incredible, and always hilarious. One of my favorite issues was with the health system on the creatures. If they were hurt, a red heart would float above them to indicate damage was being taken. Well, the first time my Tiger fought another creature, which happened to be the Monkey, the Monkey knocked my Tiger onto its back, and the Monkey straddled it and started smacking away. This caused damage. So, on my screen, a Monkey was straddling a Tiger, smacking the crap out of it, while hearts were surrounding them like some kind of Furry Yiff Kinkfest. When I got done laughing, I submitted that bug as high priority. lol

If any game gets a sequel or spiritual successor it’s Black and White. No other game oozes charm and personality like this one does, absolutely adore this game and can never find anything that even comes close to scratching the itch
Problem is, EA owns the rights to it. If Lionhead Studios were able to have been able to keep the rights when they were bought out by Microsoft it's highly likely we'd might have seen Black & White for the Kinect.
Look up Fata Deum. That's the most Black and White like God Sim in years, though it puts its own spin on the formula rather than being an outright clone. It seems to draw more from BW1 than BW2, with a focus on converting villages via miracles rather than military force or building, dealing with enemy gods trying to convert your own people, and only influencing units rather than controlling them directly.
The first time I ever heard of the Black and White franchise was in a Guinness Book of World Records that said the creature in Black and White 2 was the most advanced AI or something of the sort. There was an image of the cow man creature on that page and it looked horrific to my tiny self.
@@DragonTigerBoss The tiger was always the one trying to redeem his own evil. No matter the Underworld realm you're trying to build, it'd still hand over food to villagers when he didn't think I was looking.
The file for your companions personality/behavior presets can end up being I think either 5 or 15mb, which for a settings file is friggin enormous, even by todays standards.
The first one has less RTS and city building elements and focuses more on fighting other gods by getting people to believe in you through miracles. Sometimes this involves throwing huge rocks over villages that are outside your area of influence over and over again to slowly increase their faith until they start to worship you.
Not only that. The micro managment with the creature were far more interesting than in BW2. In the first game you had to teach every miracle to your creature by yourself and only when you had that one miracle. Also there were far more creatures available... Still it's a great game.

The opening cinematic for B&W 1 is SO good. Uses the same footage, but totally different theme to it. Highly recommend anyone who hasn't, go check it out. Great scene, even if you don't play the game.
When I think about it the disciple system in this game really does make a lot of sense if you were suddenly picked up by an unseen force and physically put in front of a job you would definitely think I should do this job
My main problem with Black and White 2 is that the opposing god was just a conqueror, always on the offensive, always sending soldiers plus a creature and maybe a tornado or volcano every now and then. It would've been more interesting to have at least a couple of maps where I had to compete against a more impressive city.
Mine was always that the creature went from being your right hand in 1 to basically useless in 2. Also vastly preferred the worship mechanic because it made me feel more like I was well...a god.

speaking of Volcano miracles; You can actually win diplomatic victories with them. Spawning them in the middle of a town is, understandable, an evil act. However, if you were to, say, spawn one at the very edge of your enemy's influence the expanding slope of the volcano is now counted as unlivable land and thus shrinks the influence of your rival. If it expands far enough their influence will drop far enough below yours that it will push you into the win state for the level. Hooray for good victories.

Love your vids Micky! I'm glad you're doing well, already over 100,000 subs, jeez. I started watching at like 20k, and that wasn't even that long ago. Amazing!
I absolutely adored Black and White when I was younger, sadly my computer was too crappy to handle the second game - I've played it and it is a solid game. Considering the first game released in a literally unbeatable state and was broken in many ways - I LOVED the game, the side quests have so much charm to them - I still know most of the words to the song that the sailors who want your help to sail away to a far land sing (AIDDLE AIDDLE EE). There has never been a true spiritual succesor to these games sadly. From Dust is a little bit close and there are a few other similar games but nothing that takes me back to my many hours spent painstakingly making village centre after village centre to expand influence enough to capture other god's cities.
When I was 14, and the hand turned into a monster's hand, I didn't know I had been playing like an evil m-f without realizing. It was like looking into a mirror for the first time.
The sailor song has been stuck in my head for the past 20 years! Every once in a while I'll start humming it out of nowhere. "We simply can't leave til we get some more wooooood" haha

i remember the siren wonder. its extremely overpowered. i used to have a cracked version as a kid - but it has a weird drm, children wont grow up so eventually you end up with like a billion kids. i exiled like 200 kids on a island.
I remember picking up the first game when it released, it just blew my mind at how simple, but intuitive the control system was. Its a shame we haven't seen a try VR (that weren't abandoned) version of this type of game, it feels like it would transition mediums perfectly.
The VA of the antagonistic god in the first game was great, as I admired him for his work in the Legacy of Kain series as well as Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance.
YOO this game, i freaking loved it. Used to play this for hundrets of hours, i wish the genre didn't die because hot damn nothing really came ever close to the likes of Black and White (although i prefere the first installment because it focused more on being a God rather than city building and management). Its a pain to get running on windows 7 and up but definitly worth if you get it working
Dude I totally agree b&w 2 was like the last hurrah for the type of Pokémon game everyone knew and loved before bdsp came out. While b&w 1 included new mechanics like weather that would return in later entries, b&w 2 expanded with more types of weather, seasons, and of course the beloved deer Pokémon that would change with the seasons.
I played both games and they are so dear to me, the first one being one of the first games i ever played on pc. You would think i'm old but i'm just 20 in 3 months haha
So how in the hell this hasn't had a third game with VR hand controls so you can grab the ground to drag your camera round the map do hand motions to activate spells ect its right there ready to go just make it good and it'll be a best selling game
Ah no way! The black and white games were one of my favourites. B&W 1 is a pain to get running these days and involves some moving around of files but you can find it online and I managed to get it working grand on my current setup. I can't say it has aged as well as 2 though lol.
Those sailors have lived rent-free in my head for 20 years...
@@Dylanquinn666 OOOOOOOOoooohhh
We've got this notion,
that we'd quite like to sail the ocean,
but we were building our boat
and we've run out of wooood!
We're not keen on sinking
so thats why we're sitting thinking
because we simply can't leave
til we get some more wood.
20 damn years and I still know all the words
"Are You PROTESTANTS?? I was told to stay away from you!!" 🤣 You made me spit my Coffee ☕ out!
Crushing servants with your holy fist or hauling boulders over their houses... this game is still awesome af.
Black & White plus Black & White 2 need to be remastered as a collection, loved both of them so much.
More of this plz
I couldn't be arsed finding a better person than you playing this. Your commentary on this vid is gold so maybe make this into a series???
well, i've watched some of your videos because they came in the recommended sometimes but a youtuber playing black and white 2 in 2021? you just earned yourself a sub
i remember the siren wonder. its extremely overpowered. i used to have a cracked version as a kid - but it has a weird drm, children wont grow up so eventually you end up with like a billion kids. i exiled like 200 kids on a island.
and now I feel a MIGHTY NEED to play this gem again
I remember picking up the first game when it released, it just blew my mind at how simple, but intuitive the control system was. Its a shame we haven't seen a try VR (that weren't abandoned) version of this type of game, it feels like it would transition mediums perfectly.
The voice acting carries the vibe of Lego Island
Only played the first one but boy was that game fun, hoping this one (with your humor sprinkled in) holds up just as well
The VA of the antagonistic god in the first game was great, as I admired him for his work in the Legacy of Kain series as well as Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance.
Please play more of this! It’s been a fave since I was a kid, just such a unique fun game with so many little cool quirks, I adore it
Never heard of this game before but now I really want to play it.
This was so fun to watch. I miss this game and your energy made it way easy funnier
Member when Peter Molyneux wasn’t an evil greedy troll? I member 😢
Well he still already over promised more than he could ever deliver though...
Hope there is more to come! very enjoyable playthrough! :)
Series please. This game’s amazing
not gona lie, this sounds like a solid game if it came out in 2022
Is the God hand always white? Think about that 2022 comment lol. But honestly looks solid a hell def passed me by.
So how in the hell this hasn't had a third game with VR hand controls so you can grab the ground to drag your camera round the map do hand motions to activate spells ect its right there ready to go just make it good and it'll be a best selling game
The same reason this was never made for the Kinect and no one can make a remastered version.
EA owns the rights to it, not Lionhead.
@@mikaruyami tat does not stop the game being made just changes who makes it.
“The creature is asleep let’s not disturb it”
Mick: “Get up ya bastard!”
Ah no way! The black and white games were one of my favourites. B&W 1 is a pain to get running these days and involves some moving around of files but you can find it online and I managed to get it working grand on my current setup. I can't say it has aged as well as 2 though lol. It was a bit all over the place and full of bugs but they really improved on pretty much everything in 2, so if you have no nostalgia for the first one you're not really missing much.
Glad to see you back man keep up the awesome work
Man, this game was amazing.
So sad there never was a B&W3
Imagine this with steam and steam workshop.
