In my opinion this is the best RUclips video of 2024. This is just amazing for the usability and UX of WordPress. Great video! You make a "huge, huge, huge.... huge, huge, huge difference" to the WordPress and web design communities. Thank you, Jamie Marsland. 👍
Finally the Pattern Overrides are here. These can be something people can’t live without. I hope with your videos, more people will understand that this is basically allowing them to create small templates!
I love your vids dude, but in this day and age only those who never encountered visual page builders can be amazed with wordpress “features”. Others usually laugh.
@@jamiewp For instance, in Bricks builder you can create the template and insert as an element across your website pages (or other templates). Once you modify the template, all instances are being updated site-wide. Or, you can modify/customize a certain element towards your goals and save as a new global element. It gets updated site-wide as such. Off the topic, I'm using WP for over 20 years and I love it. But... once they catch up with modern page builders (those that can be called modern today), I'll probably be dead already. God forbid if today's developers were condemned to use Gutenberg only. Keep it up Jamie, love your work 🙌🏻
Thanks for the vidéo, this is so cool 🤩, my fav thing being css grid - can't wait ! I hear you will be in Turin for WordCamp Europe, OMG I will get to see a youtube star IRL - I will definetly try to say hello or rather bonjour (I'm French..) 👋
Thanks Jamie. You don't know how much I wish for the grid block. If one has several Posts, one can use the grid block to show excerpts from the latest Posts, on a main page, with a read more line for each.
Hi Jamie, Pretty new to creating a website, have a few questions. Hopefully I can get some answers from you. I am trying to create Custom Post template. Appearance -> Editor -> Patterns -> Create New Pattern. I did the basic design and saved it under the "Posts" category. I was hoping that when I go to add a new Post, I could click on the "+" sign at the top left corner and select this newly created post pattern but the pattern is not showing up in the list. What am I doing wrong? Thanks.
Noob to WP. So many things to improve within Blocks imo. 1. Options need to be shown all the time. So many options are hidden by default and its a tedious task to click them for them to be visible every single time. For example, by default, padding only shows top/bottom and right/left if im not mistaken. And if a user wants to adjust individual sides, they have to click on the "menu" to see tnose opti9ns. Same thing with typography and all secti9ns. Just emable it by default so all options under a section are visible by default. Take cues from how Adobe Lightroom or Darktable works. Expand/collapse the section but once expanded all options should be visible. 2. Setting to show template by default while adding a post. Not sure what the rationale behind not showing the template and just providing the user a title and content section. Its like throwing a stone in the dark. Of course once one gets used to the workflow, its not a problem but id say if the template is shown by default, itll make working so much easier and intuitive. 3. Again as a noob and an end user, i want to see fields be editable in a template. Lets say i design a custom template for a post with images, headings (h2, h3), tables or whatever all of them should be editable when i use thwt template when adding a post. Currently only the post title and content block are editable. Any h2, h3 headings etc are not editable from a custom post template. Any template one designs, every single element in it shoukd be editable. Will make it so much easier imo. 4. Mobile, tablet responsive controls. I think this is bare minimum. Over the past few weeks, i have designed a template or pattern or page to look nice on a desktop but on tablet or mobile, it just breaks or isnt that good with padding and margins all over the place. Like other page builders, WP blocks should have responsive controls for mobile or tablet. 4. More options for each block. Current options while good, more need to be present. For eg, i faced an issue today. The table block doesnt have any control to adjust the width or height of cells. I needed to insert a table with a 35-65 % ratio for the 2 columns, but there is no way to do it. Absolutely no clu3 if these are already requested and are being worked on. Thought I'd just chime in as i have just started using WP and these are few od the issues that immediatedly jumped out at me.
You have an amazing video here. Amazing demonstrations too. The only feedback I'd give is that the transition music was a bit too... funky for this type of video. I felt it didn't fit at all.
Rich Tabor just gave me a demo of 1 Click Style Variations (the last feature I showed) and it's much more powerful than I imagined. It's also going to make it much easier for pattern portability.
Great breakdown - I do wish that there was more clarification between what is coming (grid block, yay!), and what is likely/probably/maybe coming (zoomed out view) - perhaps what is likely coming goes at the beginning or end, not the middle? Just makes a nice separation.
Great question - I've just heard that the zoomed out view has been punted to the next release - if you want to keep up to date I've got this article (that i update) www.pootlepress.com/2024/04/whats-coming-in-wordpress-6-6/
I'd love to see how Rollback auto-updates feature works. If plugins are set to auto-update and while updating something goes wrong, WordPress will auto-rollback the update
jamie i love your channel and videos. One of topic question? I keep wondering what the extension you use to highlight and zoom with the mouse cursor. I occasionally have to send a video to clients that zooming in would be useful. Thank you!!
Thanks for your always practical, useful summaries! I just worry you will jinx features you mention! 😉. Kidding, of course. But we have had some good stuff slip versions lately! 🤔
Im desperate. My navigation submenus are stuck open (only on mobile) and choosing open on click does nothing for mobile view. Is this a glitch in 2024? is it because my main header isnt a page or isnt clickable? Its just a custom link with no link it it. But i need that title to be 'products' - then have my various product pages as the submenu items. Really not sure why they are all showing as open on my mobile menu. Where can i find out or trouble shoot this as an issue? Cheers
@jamiewp Great video as always! Looks like your cat had a 'paw-to-face' meeting with you about the treat situation 😾, leaving a mark on the top-right of your forehead. Don't worry, we got you covered with likes👍!
Very disappointed, Jamie... You should be at 50K subscribers! Ppl don't know what they're missing. Messing around aside, great pre-view of WP 6.6. Thanks, as always.
I really really tried to use everything wordpress offers, including these new functions. Most of the time I stumble upon limitations because most of these features are half baked. For example pattern overrides are only applicable to certain components. The grid is just a fraction of what the grid can do. In the end, I end up using custom css styles for mostly everything and I still need to tweak a lot in the functions.php.
@@jamiewp No I don’t have anything specific. I like archive Grid style post layouts (looks cleaner than Masonry) and the ability to add banners etc. Most themes ‘in the magazine style’ like NEWS, BLOCKSY, KADENCE etc seem soooo bloated. Of course they have certain key elements like Table of Contents, Sidebars etc but I feel WP FSE Block Themes are the way to go to avoid bloat…
For this release it's just the core Heading, Para, Button and Image Blocks. I think 3rd party blocks should be able to add support though (but this needs checking).
@@jamiewp I want the content area on a 4K monitor, to be different on a mobile device. I just cannot acheive it. I can do this in CSS easily. But another RUclipsr told me it can only be done using PHP hooks. I have a site where the row doesn't convert to a column, until Wordpress tells it to. Also I want text to be a different size on a mobile device. I always use REM units, but they still never look right.
Sort of agree here. Ex. Negative margins are awesome, but I feel like it's still sort of limited in its current form. Most of the time, your negative margin isn't going to play nice on all screen sizes. I haven't really looked into it, but do we know what the Gutenberg dev team's stance is on implementing media queries in the Gutenberg editor? I'm sure it's a daunting task...do they see it as a user specific enhancement? (ie. implement a block style or extend a block to handle it)

Hi Paul, that sounds like a job for the Query Loop Block (unless I'm not understanding properly).
